1 ¶ Et David dit : Ici sera la maison de l’Éternel Dieu, et ici sera l’autel des holocaustes pour Israël.
22:1-29:20
Cette section rapporte la manière dont David prépara la construction du temple, qui devait être l’œuvre de Salomon. Les préparatifs généraux et les diverses responsabilités sont décrits en #1Ch 22:1-19, la répartition des tâches en #1Ch 23:1-27:33, et les dernières recommandations du roi à Salomon en #1Ch 28:1-29:20.
22:1-19
David donna ses instructions à trois catégories:
1° les ouvriers (vv. #1Ch 22:2-5);
2° Salomon (vv. #1Ch 22:6-16);
3° les chefs (vv. #1Ch 22:17-19).
maison. David destina le terrain qu’il venait d’acheter (#1Ch 21:22-30) au temple de Jérusalem que Salomon devait construire (v. #1Ch 22: 6 ; #1Ch 28:9-10).
2 David fit rassembler les étrangers qui étaient dans le pays d’Israël, et il chargea des tailleurs de pierres de préparer des pierres de taille pour la construction de la maison de Dieu.
étrangers. Il s’agissait d’artisans non israélites, descendants des Cananéens (#2Ch 8:7-10), et de prisonniers de guerre (#2Ch 2:7); la législation mosaïque obligeait à les traiter avec compassion et assurait leur protection (cf. #Ex 22: 21 ; #Ex 23: 9 ; #Lé 19: 33 ; #De 24:14-15), mais un service était exigé en contrepartie. C’est la seule fois que des ouvriers sont appelés « étrangers » (cf. #1R 5:13-18).
3 Il prépara aussi du fer en abondance pour les clous des battants des portes et pour les crampons, de l’airain en quantité telle qu’il n’était pas possible de le peser,
fer … airain. David avait dû acquérir la technique du fer auprès des Philistins (#1S 13:19-21). Le bronze devait provenir des butins de guerre (cf. #1Ch 18: 8).
4 et des bois de cèdre sans nombre, car les Sidoniens et les Tyriens avaient amené à David des bois de cèdre en abondance.
cèdre. Ce bois provenait du Liban, une région montagneuse couverte de forêts au nord d’Israël, et était fourni par les habitants de Tyr et de Sidon, probablement à l’instigation du roi Hiram, ami de David (cf. #1Ch 14: 1 ; #1R 5:1).
5 David disait : Mon fils Salomon est jeune et d’un âge faible, et la maison qui sera bâtie à l’Éternel s’élèvera à un haut degré de renommée et de gloire dans tous les pays ; c’est pourquoi je veux faire pour lui des préparatifs. Et David fit beaucoup de préparatifs avant sa mort.
jeune. Salomon était né vers le début du règne de David (vers 1000-990 av. J.-C.) et devait avoir entre 20 et 30 ans à l’époque. Le défi énorme et complexe que représentait l’organisation d’une construction si monumentale exigeait de l’expérience.
renommée. David avait compris que le temple devait refléter sur la terre quelque chose de la majesté céleste de Dieu, c’est pourquoi il se consacra à en rassembler les plans et les matériaux, puisant dans la grande quantité de butin prise aux peuples qu’il avait conquis et aux villes qu’il avait pillées (vv. #1Ch 22:14-16).
6 ¶ David appela Salomon, son fils, et lui ordonna de bâtir une maison à l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël.
22:6-16
David donna des instructions précises à Salomon en vue de la construction du temple, car lui-même ne pouvait s’y atteler à cause du nombre de personnes qu’il avait tuées au cours de ses batailles (v. #1Ch 22: 8). Cf. #1R 5:3.
7 David dit à Salomon : Mon fils, j’avais l’intention de bâtir une maison au nom de l’Éternel, mon Dieu.
8 Mais la parole de l’Éternel m’a été ainsi adressée : Tu as versé beaucoup de sang, et tu as fait de grandes guerres ; tu ne bâtiras pas une maison à mon nom, car tu as versé devant moi beaucoup de sang sur la terre.
22:8-10
David avait médité sur l’alliance que Dieu avait conclue avec lui (cf. #2S 7 ; #1Ch 17) et qui comprenait:
1° le mandat divin, confié à Salomon, de construire le temple;
2° des accents de règne messianique.
9 Voici, il te naîtra un fils, qui sera un homme de repos, et à qui je donnerai du repos en le délivrant de tous ses ennemis d’alentour ; car Salomon sera son nom, et je ferai venir sur Israël la paix et la tranquillité pendant sa vie.
10 Ce sera lui qui bâtira une maison à mon nom. Il sera pour moi un fils, et je serai pour lui un père ; et j’affermirai pour toujours le trône de son royaume en Israël.
11 Maintenant, mon fils, que l’Éternel soit avec toi, afin que tu prospères et que tu bâtisses la maison de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, comme il l’a déclaré à ton égard !
22:11-13
L’encouragement spirituel adressé par David à Salomon rappelle l’exhortation de l’Éternel à Josué (cf. #Jos 1:6-9). Salomon allait justement demander à Dieu « la sagesse et l’intelligence » que son père David désirait pour lui, et il les recevrait (cf. #1R 3:3-14 ; #2Ch 1:7-12). Ayant appris la valeur de ces conseils spirituels, il en prodiguerait à son tour en #Ec 12:1, 13.
12 Veuille seulement l’Éternel t’accorder de la sagesse et de l’intelligence, et te faire régner sur Israël dans l’observation de la loi de l’Éternel, ton Dieu !
13 Alors tu prospéreras, si tu as soin de mettre en pratique les lois et les ordonnances que l’Éternel a prescrites à Moïse pour Israël. Fortifie-toi et prends courage, ne crains point et ne t’effraie point.
14 Voici, par mes efforts, j’ai préparé pour la maison de l’Éternel cent mille talents d’or, un million de talents d’argent, et une quantité d’airain et de fer qu’il n’est pas possible de peser, car il y en a en abondance ; j’ai aussi préparé du bois et des pierres, et tu en ajouteras encore.
cent mille talents d’or. Si l’on estime la valeur d’un talent à 35 kg, cela correspondrait à 3500 tonnes d’or.
un million de talents. environ 35 000 tonnes d’argent.
15 Tu as auprès de toi un grand nombre d’ouvriers, des tailleurs de pierres, et des charpentiers, et des hommes habiles dans toute espèce d’ouvrages.
16 L’or, l’argent, l’airain et le fer, sont sans nombre. Lève-toi et agis, et que l’Éternel soit avec toi !
17 ¶ David ordonna à tous les chefs d’Israël de venir en aide à Salomon, son fils.
22:17-19
Conscient de la jeunesse et du manque d’expérience de son fils (#1Ch 22: 5), et sachant qu’il ne pourrait pas se lancer seul dans un tel projet, David appela sagement les responsables du pays à transférer leur loyauté et leur soutien à Salomon; ce serait lui qui exécuterait la volonté divine et ses derniers désirs. Quant à l’Éternel, il s’engagea à faire de Salomon l’homme le plus sage de la terre (cf. #1R 3:3-14).
18 L’Éternel, votre Dieu, n’est-il pas avec vous, et ne vous a-t-il pas donné du repos de tous côtés ? Car il a livré entre mes mains les habitants du pays, et le pays est assujetti devant l’Éternel et devant son peuple.
19 Appliquez maintenant votre cœur et votre âme à chercher l’Éternel, votre Dieu ; levez-vous, et bâtissez le sanctuaire de l’Éternel Dieu, afin d’amener l’arche de l’alliance de l’Éternel et les ustensiles consacrés à Dieu dans la maison qui sera bâtie au nom de l’Éternel.

1 ¶ And David said, This is the house of the LORD God, and here shall be the altar of burnt offerings unto Israel.
22: 1-29: 20
This section relates the manner in which David prepared the construction of the temple, which was to be the work of Solomon. The general preparations and various responsibilities are described in # 1Ch 22: 1-19, the division of tasks in # 1Ch 23: 1-27: 33, and the King's last recommendations to Solomon in # 1Ch 28: 1-29: 20.
22: 1-19
David gave instructions to three categories:
(1) the workers (vv. 1Ch 22: 2-5);
2. Solomon (vv. 1Ch 22: 6-16);
(3) the chiefs (vv. 1Ch 22: 17-19).
House. David made the land he had just bought (# 1Ch 21: 22-30) to the temple of Jerusalem that Solomon was to build (see # 1Ch 22: 6; # 1Ch 28: 9-10).
2 And David brought in the strangers that were in the land of Israel, and he charged the stonemasons to prepare stones for the building of the house of God.
Foreigners. They were non-Israelite artisans, descendants of the Canaanites (# 2Ch 8: 7-10), and prisoners of war (# 2Ch 2: 7); The Mosaic law compelled them to treat them with compassion and protection (cf. # 22: 21; #Ex 23: 9; # Le 19:33; # 24: 14-15), but a service was required in return . This is the only time workers are called "strangers" (cf # 1R 5: 13-18).
3 He also made plenty of iron for the nails of the doors of the doors, and for the crampons, brass in such quantity that it was not possible to weigh it,
Iron ... brass. David had to acquire the iron technique from the Philistines (# 1S 13: 19-21). The bronze had to come from the spoils of war (cf # 1Ch 18: 8).
4 and cedar woods without number, for the Sidonians and the Tyrians had brought abundant cedar to David.
cedar. This wood came from Lebanon, a mountainous region covered with forests to the north of Israel, and was supplied by the inhabitants of Tire and Sidon, probably at the instigation of David's friend Hiram (cf # 1Ch 14: 1 ; # 1R 5: 1).
5 David said, "My son Solomon is young and of a weak age, and the house that is built for the LORD will rise to a high degree of fame and glory in every land; That is why I want to make preparations for him. And David made many preparations before his death.
young. Salomon was born around the beginning of David's reign (circa 1000-990 BC) and was aged between 20 and 30 at the time. The enormous and complex challenge involved in organizing such a monumental construction required experience.
Renowned. David had realized that the temple had to reflect on the earth something of the heavenly majesty of God, so he dedicated himself to gathering the plans and materials, drawing from the great amount of booty taken from the peoples he had Conquered and the cities which he had plundered (vv. 1Ch 22: 14-16).
6 And David called Solomon his son, and commanded him to build a house for the LORD God of Israel.
22: 6-16
David gave Solomon precise instructions for the construction of the temple, for he himself could not do so because of the number of people he had killed in his battles (see # 1Ch 22: 8) . See # 1R 5: 3.
7 And David said to Solomon, My son, it was my intention to build a house in the name of the Lord my God.
8 But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, You have shed much blood, and have made great wars; Thou shalt not build a house for my name: for thou hast poured before me much blood upon the earth.
22: 8-10
David had meditated on the covenant that God had made with him (cf. # 2S 7; # 1Ch 17) and which included:
(1) the divine mandate entrusted to Solomon to build the temple;
2. Accents of the Messianic reign.
9 Behold, a son shall be born unto you, and he shall be a man of rest, and to whom I will give rest, and deliver him from all his enemies round about; For Solomon will be his name, and I will bring peace and tranquility to Israel in his lifetime.
10 He shall build a house for my name. He will be a son to me, and I will be a father to him; And I will establish for ever the throne of his kingdom in Israel.
11 Now therefore, my son, may the LORD be with thee, that thou mayest prosper, and build the house of the LORD thy God as he hath spoken against thee.
22: 11-13
David's spiritual encouragement to Solomon recalls the exhortation of the Lord to Joshua (cf. Jer. 1: 6-9). Solomon was just going to ask God "the wisdom and understanding" that his father David desired for him, and he would receive them (cf. # 1R 3: 3-14; # 2Ch 1: 7-12). Having learned the value of these spiritual counsels, he would lavish them in turn in Eph 12: 1, 13.
12 Only the LORD grant you wisdom and understanding, and make you reign over Israel in the observance of the law of the LORD your God.
13 And thou shalt prosper, that thou mayest practice the laws and ordinances which the LORD commanded Moses for Israel. Strengthen and take courage, fear not, and be not afraid.
14 I have made a hundred thousand talents of gold, and a million talents of silver, and a quantity of brass and iron, which I can not make, for I have prepared for the house of the LORD To weigh, for there is an abundance of them; I have also prepared wood and stones, and you will add more.
A hundred thousand talents of gold. If we estimate the value of a talent at 35 kg, this would correspond to 3,500 tons of gold.
A million talents. About 35,000 tons of silver.
15 And thou hast a great multitude of workmen, and stonemasons, and carpenters, and men skilful in all manner of works.
16 The gold, the silver, the brass, and the iron, are without number. Arise and act, and the LORD be with thee.
17 ¶ And David commanded all the rulers of Israel to help Solomon his son.
22: 17-19
Aware of his son's lack of experience (# 1Ch 22: 5), and knowing that he would not be able to launch himself alone in such a project, David wisely called on the leaders of the country to transfer their loyalty and Support to Solomon; It would be he who would execute the divine will and his last desires. As for the Lord, he pledged to make Solomon the wisest man on earth (cf. # 1R 3: 3-14).
18 Was not the LORD your God with you, and he restored you from all sides? For he hath delivered into my hand the inhabitants of the land, and the land is subdued before the LORD, and before his people.
19 Now apply your heart and soul to seek the LORD your God; And build the sanctuary of the LORD God, that they may bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and the vessels of God, into the house that is to be built in the name of the LORD.
