1 ¶ David s’enfuit de Najoth, près de Rama. Il alla trouver Jonathan, et dit : Qu’ai-je fait ? quel est mon crime, quel est mon péché aux yeux de ton père, pour qu’il en veuille à ma vie ?
Najoth, près de Rama. Peut-être, un quartier de la ville de Rama où Samuel et sa troupe de prophètes se retrouvaient pour la formation, la prière et la communion (cf. Élisée à Guilgal, #2R 6:1-2).
2 Jonathan lui répondit : Loin de là ! tu ne mourras point. Mon père ne fait aucune chose, grande ou petite, sans m’en informer ; pourquoi donc mon père me cacherait-il celle-là ? Il n’en est rien.
mon père me cacherait-il celle-là. L’assurance dont Jonathan fit preuve, sa conviction que Saül ne cherchait pas à faire mourir David, montre qu’il devait ignorer ses dernières tentatives de le tuer (#1S 19:9-24) et faisait confiance au serment paternel (#1S 19: 6). Jonathan s’attendait à ce que Saül l’informe de tout changement quant à ses plans.
3 David dit encore, en jurant : Ton père sait bien que j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, et il aura dit: Que Jonathan ne le sache pas ; cela lui ferait de la peine. Mais l’Éternel est vivant et ton âme est vivante ! il n’y a qu’un pas entre moi et la mort.
4 Jonathan dit à David : Je ferai pour toi ce que tu voudras.
5 Et David lui répondit : Voici, c’est demain la nouvelle lune, et je devrais m’asseoir avec le roi pour manger ; laisse-moi aller, et je me cacherai dans les champs jusqu’au soir du troisième jour.
la nouvelle lune. Le premier jour du mois, on célébrait la nouvelle lune par un repas sacrificiel (cf. #2R 4:23 ; #Esa 1:13 ; #Am 8:5). C’était une fête à la fois religieuse et civile (#No 10:10 ; #No 28:11-15).
cacherai dans les champs. Comme en #1S 19:2-3, David se cacha dans un lieu secret pour échapper à Saül.
6 Si ton père remarque mon absence, tu diras : David m’a prié de lui laisser faire une course à Bethléhem, sa ville, parce qu’il y a pour toute la famille un sacrifice annuel.
un sacrifice annuel. Apparemment, la famille de David se réunissait lors d’une fête annuelle qui coïncidait avec l’une des fêtes mensuelles de la nouvelle lune (cf. vv. #1S 20:28-29).
7 Et s’il dit : C’est bien ! ton serviteur alors n’a rien à craindre ; mais si la colère s’empare de lui, sache que le mal est résolu de sa part.
8 Montre donc ton affection pour ton serviteur, puisque tu as fait avec ton serviteur une alliance devant l’Éternel. Et, s’il y a quelque crime en moi, ôte-moi la vie toi-même, car pourquoi me mènerais-tu jusqu’à ton père ?
alliance. Cf. #1S 18: 1, #1S 18: 3. Jonathan et David s’étaient solennellement promis amitié et loyauté devant l’Éternel. Ils précisèrent les clauses de leur alliance aux vv. #1S 20:13-17, #1S 20: 42 ; #1S 23:17-18.
ôte-moi la vie toi-même. David s’appuya sur la relation d’alliance qui les unissait pour demander à Jonathan de le tuer s’il méritait la mort du fait de son péché.
9 ¶ Jonathan lui dit : Loin de toi la pensée que je ne t’informerai pas, si j’apprends que le mal est résolu de la part de mon père et menace de t’atteindre !
10 David dit à Jonathan : Qui m’informera dans le cas où ton père te répondrait durement ?
11 Et Jonathan dit à David : Viens, sortons dans les champs. Et ils sortirent tous deux dans les champs.
12 Jonathan dit à David : Je prends à témoin l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël ! Je sonderai mon père demain ou après-demain ; et, dans le cas où il serait bien disposé pour David, si je n’envoie vers toi personne pour t’en informer,
13 que l’Éternel traite Jonathan dans toute sa rigueur ! Dans le cas où mon père trouverait bon de te faire du mal, je t’informerai aussi et je te laisserai partir, afin que tu t’en ailles en paix ; et que l’Éternel soit avec toi, comme il a été avec mon père !
14 Si je dois vivre encore, veuille user envers moi de la bonté de l’Éternel ; (20-15) et si je meurs,
la bonté de l’Éternel. Jonathan avait reconnu que David serait un jour le roi d’Israël. C’est dans cette perspective qu’il demanda à David de le protéger, ainsi que sa famille, lorsque ce moment arriverait.
15 ne retire jamais ta bonté envers ma maison, pas même lorsque l’Éternel retranchera chacun des ennemis de David de dessus la face de la terre.
16 Car Jonathan a fait alliance avec la maison de David. Que l’Éternel tire vengeance des ennemis de David !
la maison de David. Cette alliance n’engageait pas uniquement Jonathan et David, mais aussi leurs descendants respectifs. David ferait du reste preuve de bonté envers un descendant de Jonathan par fidélité à cette alliance (#2S 9:1-8).
des ennemis de David. Jonathan savait que son propre père, Saül, faisait partie des ennemis de David qui seraient tués lorsque ce dernier deviendrait roi (cf. #1S 18: 29 ; #1S 19: 17).
17 Jonathan protesta encore auprès de David de son affection pour lui, car il l’aimait comme son âme.
protesta encore auprès de David. Ou « fit encore prêter serment à David ». En réponse aux paroles de Jonathan, celui-ci promit solennellement de respecter leur pacte.
l’aimait comme son âme. Une affection profonde et réciproque était à la base de l’alliance conclue entre Jonathan et David. C’est le genre d’attitude que Dieu attend de nous (#Lé 19: 18 ; #Mt 22: 39).
18 Jonathan lui dit : C’est demain la nouvelle lune ; on remarquera ton absence, car ta place sera vide.
19 Tu descendras le troisième jour jusqu’au fond du lieu où tu t’étais caché le jour de l’affaire, et tu resteras près de la pierre d’Ézel.
pierre d’Ézel. Nom signifiant peut-être « pierre de la séparation ». Son emplacement est inconnu, mais c’était un point de repère bien connu de David.
20 Je tirerai trois flèches du côté de la pierre, comme si je visais un but.
21 Et voici, j’enverrai un jeune homme, et je lui dirai : Va, trouve les flèches. Si je lui dis : Voici, les flèches sont en deçà de toi, prends-les ! alors viens, car il y a paix pour toi, et tu n’as rien à craindre, l’Éternel est vivant !
22 Mais si je dis au jeune homme : Voici, les flèches sont au-delà de toi ! alors va-t’en, car l’Éternel te renvoie.
23 L’Éternel est à jamais témoin de la parole que nous nous sommes donnée l’un à l’autre.
24 ¶ David se cacha dans les champs. C’était la nouvelle lune, et le roi prit place au festin pour manger.
25 Le roi s’assit comme à l’ordinaire sur son siège contre la paroi, Jonathan se leva, et Abner s’assit à côté de Saül ; mais la place de David resta vide.
Abner. Le cousin de Saül et le chef de son armée. C’était un cousin de Saül qui commandait son armée (cf. #1S 17: 55, #1S 17: 59 ; #1S 20: 25 ; #1S 26:14-15).
26 Saül ne dit rien ce jour-là ; car, pensa-t-il, c’est par hasard, il n’est pas pur, certainement il n’est pas pur.
il n’est pas pur. Au début, Saül ne se posa pas de question sur l’absence de David, supposant qu’il était rituellement impur et ne pouvait par conséquent pas participer au repas (cf. #Lé 7:20-21 ; #Lé 15: 16).
27 Le lendemain, second jour de la nouvelle lune, la place de David était encore vide. Et Saül dit à Jonathan, son fils: Pourquoi le fils d’Isaï n’a-t-il paru au repas ni hier ni aujourd’hui ?
28 Jonathan répondit à Saül : David m’a demandé la permission d’aller à Bethléhem.
29 Il a dit : Laisse-moi aller, je te prie, car nous avons dans la ville un sacrifice de famille, et mon frère me l’a fait savoir ; si donc j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, permets que j’aille en hâte voir mes frères. C’est pour cela qu’il n’est point venu à la table du roi.
30 Alors la colère de Saül s’enflamma contre Jonathan, et il lui dit : Fils pervers et rebelle, ne sais-je pas que tu as pour ami le fils d’Isaï, à ta honte et à la honte de ta mère ?
Fils pervers et rebelle. Avec ces qualificatifs infâmes, Saül maudit Jonathan pour avoir pris le parti de David et lui avoir ainsi fait honte, ainsi qu’à sa mère.
31 Car aussi longtemps que le fils d’Isaï sera vivant sur la terre, il n’y aura point de sécurité ni pour toi ni pour ta royauté. Et maintenant, envoie-le chercher, et qu’on me l’amène, car il est digne de mort.
32 Jonathan répondit à Saül, son père, et lui dit : Pourquoi le ferait-on mourir ? Qu’a-t-il fait ?
33 Et Saül dirigea sa lance contre lui, pour le frapper. Jonathan comprit que c’était chose résolue chez son père que de faire mourir David.
34 Il se leva de table dans une ardente colère, et ne participa point au repas le second jour de la nouvelle lune ; car il était affligé à cause de David, parce que son père l’avait outragé.
35 ¶ Le lendemain matin, Jonathan alla dans les champs au lieu convenu avec David, et il était accompagné d’un petit garçon.
36 Il lui dit : Cours, trouve les flèches que je vais tirer. Le garçon courut, et Jonathan tira une flèche qui le dépassa.
37 Lorsqu’il arriva au lieu où était la flèche que Jonathan avait tirée, Jonathan cria derrière lui : La flèche n’est-elle pas plus loin que toi ?
38 Il lui cria encore : Vite, hâte-toi, ne t’arrête pas ! Et le garçon de Jonathan ramassa les flèches et revint vers son maître.
39 Le garçon ne savait rien ; Jonathan et David seuls comprenaient la chose.
40 Jonathan remit ses armes à son garçon, et lui dit : Va, porte-les à la ville.
41 Après le départ du garçon, David se leva du côté du midi, puis se jeta le visage contre terre et se prosterna trois fois. Les deux amis s’embrassèrent et pleurèrent ensemble, David surtout fondit en larmes.
se prosterna trois fois. En se prosternant plus d’une fois, David montrait qu’il reconnaissait en Jonathan un prince et lui témoignait de son humble affection.
42 Et Jonathan dit à David : Va en paix, maintenant que nous avons juré l’un et l’autre, au nom de l’Éternel, en disant : Que l’Éternel soit à jamais entre moi et toi, entre ma postérité et ta postérité ! (20-43) David se leva, et s’en alla, et Jonathan rentra dans la ville.
la ville. C’est-à-dire Guibea, la capitale de Saül. À partir de ce moment et jusqu’à la mort de Saül, David fut banni de la cour royale.

1 ¶ David fled from Naioth in Ramah. He went to Jonathan and said, What have I done? what is my crime, what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?
Naioth in Ramah. Perhaps a quarter of the town of Ramah where Samuel and his band of prophets met to training, prayer and communion (cf. Elisha at Gilgal, # 2R 6: 1-2).
2 Jonathan said to him, Far from it! you shall not die. My father does nothing, great or small, without informing me; why should my father hide this one? It is not so.
my father hide it me that. Insurance including Jonathan showed his conviction that Saul was not trying to kill David, shows that he must ignore his past attempts to kill (# 1S 19: 9-24) and trusted the paternal oath (# 1S 19: 6). Jonathan was expected that Saul informed of any change in his plans.
3 David said again, swearing Your father knows well that I have found favor in thy sight, and he will say: Let not Jonathan know; it would make him sad. But the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth! there is a step between me and death.
4 Jonathan said to David, I will do for you what you want.
5 And David said, Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should sit with the king to eat; let me go, and I hide myself in the field unto the third day.
the new moon. The first day of the month, we celebrated the new moon by a sacrificial meal (see # 2R 4:23; #Esa 1:13; #AM 8: 5). It was a feast for both religious and civil (#No 10:10; #No 28: 11-15).
hide in the fields. As in # 1S 19: 2-3, David hid in a secret location to escape from Saul.
6 If your father miss me, then say, David asked me to let him make a run to Bethlehem his city, because there are for the whole family yearly sacrifice.
an annual sacrifice. Apparently, David's family gathered at an annual festival which coincided with a monthly celebrations of the new moon (cf. vv # 1S. 20: 28-29).
7 And he said: This is good! thy servant shall have nothing to fear; but if anger seizes him, know that evil is determined by him.
8 So Show your affection for your servant, for thou hast made thy servant into a covenant of the LORD. And, if there is iniquity in me, takes my life yourself, for why thou bring me to your father?
alliance. See # 1S 18: 1, # 1S 18: 3 Jonathan and David had solemnly promised friendship and loyalty before Jehovah. They stated the terms of their alliance in vv. # 1S 20: 13-17, # 1S 20: 42; # 1S 23: 17-18.
take away my life yourself. David leaned on the covenant relationship that bound them to ask Jonathan to kill him if he deserved to die because of his sin.
¶ 9 Jonathan said: Far from you the thought that I will not inform you if I learn that evil is determined by my father to come upon you!
10 David said to Jonathan, Who shall tell me if your father answers you harshly?
11 And Jonathan said to David, Come, go out into the fields. And they both went out into the fields.
12 Jonathan said to David, I call to witness the Lord, the God of Israel! I sounded my father about tomorrow or the day after tomorrow; and, if there be good toward David, will I not send to you person to inform you,
13 which the Lord to Jonathan full force! In case my father to harm you, I will inform you too and I let you go, that you go in you in peace; and the LORD be with you as he was with my father!
14 If I have to live yet, shew me the kindness of the LORD; (20-15) and if I die,
the goodness of the Lord. Jonathan recognized that David would one day be the king of Israel. It is in this perspective that he asked David to protect him and his family, when the moment arrived.
15 never withdraw your kindness from my house, not even when the Lord will take away all the enemies of David from the face of the earth.
16 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David. That the Lord is the avenger of the enemies of David!
the house of David. This alliance committed not only Jonathan and David but also their descendants. David would do the rest kindness to a descendant of Jonathan faithfulness to this covenant (2S # 9: 1-8).
David's enemies. Jonathan knew his own father, Saul, was one of David's enemies would be killed when it would become king (see # 1S 18: 29; # 1S 19: 17).
17 Jonathan still protested to David of his affection for him, because he loved him as his own soul.
protested again to David. Or "still had sworn to David." In response to Jonathan's words, it solemnly promised to respect their pact.
loved him as his own soul. A deep and mutual affection was the basis of the alliance between Jonathan and David. This is the kind of attitude that God expects us (# Lev 19: 18; #Mt 22: 39).
18 Jonathan said, Tomorrow is the new moon; one will notice your absence, because your seat will be empty.
19 You go down to the bottom on the third day the place where thou didst hide thyself day of the case, and shalt remain by the stone Ézel.
Ézel stone. Name possibly meaning "stone of separation." Its location is unknown, but it was a well-known landmark of David.
20 I will shoot three arrows on the side of the stone, as though I shot a goal.
21 And behold, I send a young man, and say to him: Go, find the arrows. If I tell him, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee, take them! then come, because there is peace for you, and you have nothing to fear, the Lord liveth
22 But if I say to the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond you! then go away, for the Lord has sent you away.
23 The Lord is witness forever the word that we have given to each other.
24 ¶ David hid in the fields. It was the new moon, and the king sat down to eat food.
25 The king sat down as usual in his chair against the wall, Jonathan arose, and Abner sat next to Saul; but David's place was empty.
Abner. Saul's cousin and commander of his army. He was a cousin of Saul who commanded his army (see # 1S 17: 55 # 1S 17: 59; # 1S 20: 25; # 1S 26: 14-15).
26 Saul said nothing that day; because, he thought, it was by chance, it is not clean, surely he is not clean.
it is not pure. At first, Saul did not question the absence of David, assuming he was ritually unclean and therefore could not participate in the meal (see # Lev 7: 20-21; Lev # 15: 16) .
27 The next day, the second day of the new moon, David's place was empty. And Saul said to his son Jonathan, Why has he the son of Jesse come to the meal either yesterday or today?
28 Jonathan answered Saul, David asked me permission to go to Bethlehem.
29 He said: Let me go, I pray thee, for we have a family in the town of sacrifice, and my brother made me know; if I have found favor in your eyes, let me go in a hurry to see my brothers. That is why he has not come at the king's table.
30 Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him: Son perverse and rebellious, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother?
perverse rebellious son. With these infamous qualifiers, Jonathan Saul cursed for having sided with David and have him and shamed, and her mother.
31 For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, there will be no security either for yourself or for your kingdom. And now send and fetch him to me, for he shall surely die.
32 Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said: Why shall he be slain? What did he do ?
33 And Saul cast his spear against him, to hit him. Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to kill David.
34 He got up from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the new moon; for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.
35 ¶ The next morning, Jonathan went into the field at the time appointed with David, and he was accompanied by a small boy.
36 He said to him, Run, find the arrows that I shoot. The boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.
37 When he arrived at the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan called after him: Is not the arrow beyond thee?
38 He cried out, Make speed, haste, stay not! And Jonathan's boy gathered up the arrows and came to his master.
39 The boy knew nothing; Only Jonathan and David understood the thing.
40 Jonathan gave his weapons to his boy, and said, Go, carry them to the city.
41 After the boy, David got up from the south, and fell on his face against the ground and bowed three times. The two friends embraced and cried together, until David burst into tears.
bowed three times. Prostrating themselves more than once, David showed that he recognized as a prince and Jonathan showed him his humble affection.
42 And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, now that we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed thy seed (20-43) David arose and went, and Jonathan went into the city.
the city. That is to say Gibeah, the capital of Saul. From then until the death of Saul, David was banished from the royal court.
