1 ¶ On vint dire à David : Voici, les Philistins ont attaqué Keïla, et ils pillent les aires.
Keïla. Une ville située sur les collines occidentales de Juda (voir #Jos 15: 44), à environ 29 km au sud-ouest de Jérusalem et 5 km au sud-est d’Adullam.
2 David consulta l’Éternel, en disant : Irai-je, et battrai-je ces Philistins ? Et l’Éternel lui répondit : Va, tu battras les Philistins, et tu délivreras Keïla.
consulta l’Éternel. Il le faisait au moyen des objets sacrés, l’urim et le thummim, conservés dans l’éphod sacerdotal qu’Abiathar avait apporté avec lui (v. #1S 23: 6).
3 Mais les gens de David lui dirent : Voici, nous ne sommes pas sans crainte ici même en Juda ; que sera-ce si nous allons à Keïla contre les troupes des Philistins ?
4 David consulta encore l’Éternel. Et l’Éternel lui répondit: Lève-toi, descends à Keïla, car je livre les Philistins entre tes mains.
5 David alla donc avec ses gens à Keïla, et il se battit contre les Philistins ; il emmena leur bétail, et leur fit éprouver une grande défaite. Ainsi David délivra les habitants de Keïla.
6 Lorsque Abiathar, fils d’Achimélec, s’enfuit vers David à Keïla, il descendit ayant en main l’éphod.
7 ¶ Saül fut informé de l’arrivée de David à Keïla, et il dit : Dieu le livre entre mes mains, car il est venu s’enfermer dans une ville qui a des portes et des barres.
des portes et des barres. Littéralement « deux portes et une barre ». On plaçait une barre très lourde en travers des deux battants en bois pour fermer l’entrée. Il n’y avait donc qu’une seule porte dans les murs de Keïla. Puisqu’il n’y avait qu’un seul moyen d’entrer et de sortir de la ville, Saül crut avoir piégé David.
8 Et Saül convoqua tout le peuple à la guerre, afin de descendre à Keïla et d’assiéger David et ses gens.
9 David, ayant eu connaissance du mauvais dessein que Saül projetait contre lui, dit au sacrificateur Abiathar : Apporte l’éphod !
10 Et David dit : Éternel, Dieu d’Israël, ton serviteur apprend que Saül veut venir à Keïla pour détruire la ville à cause de moi.
11 Les habitants de Keïla me livreront-ils entre ses mains ? Saül descendra-t-il, comme ton serviteur l’a appris ? Éternel, Dieu d’Israël, daigne le révéler à ton serviteur ! Et l’Éternel répondit : Il descendra.
me livreront-ils. David consulta à nouveau l’Éternel, utilisant l’éphod avec l’urim et le thummim comme moyens de révélation de la volonté divine. Il voulait savoir si les hommes de Keïla allaient se montrer déloyaux et le livrer à Saül. L’Éternel répondit par l’affirmative (v. #1S 23: 12).
12 David dit encore : Les habitants de Keïla me livreront-ils, moi et mes gens, entre les mains de Saül ? Et l’Éternel répondit : Ils te livreront.
13 Alors David se leva avec ses gens au nombre d’environ six cents hommes ; ils sortirent de Keïla, et s’en allèrent où ils purent. Saül, informé que David s’était sauvé de Keïla, suspendit sa marche.
gens … six cents hommes. où David n’avait que 400 hommes.
14 ¶ David demeura au désert, dans des lieux forts, et il resta sur la montagne du désert de Ziph. Saül le cherchait toujours, mais Dieu ne le livra pas entre ses mains.
au désert, dans les lieux forts. Le désert de Juda était la région désertique infertile entre les collines et la mer Morte. De nombreux ravins et cavernes se trouvent dans cette région accidentée où David se cacha de Saül. Le #Ps 63:1 peut renvoyer à cet incident ou à #2S 15:23-28.
désert de Ziph. Le désert entourant Ziph, à environ 6 km au sud d’Hébron.
Dieu ne le livra pas. Dieu protégea souverainement David afin d’accomplir ses propres buts (cf. #Esa 46:9-11).
15 David, voyant Saül en marche pour attenter à sa vie, se tint au désert de Ziph, dans la forêt.
16 Ce fut alors que Jonathan, fils de Saül, se leva et alla vers David dans la forêt. Il fortifia sa confiance en Dieu,

fortifia sa confiance en Dieu. Jonathan encouragea David en lui rappelant la promesse de l’Éternel et son intérêt pour lui, et en lui assurant que l’Éternel ferait de lui le prochain roi d’Israël, ce que Saül savait aussi (voir #1S 20:30-31).
17 et lui dit : Ne crains rien, car la main de Saül, mon père, ne t’atteindra pas. Tu régneras sur Israël, et moi je serai au second rang près de toi ; Saül, mon père, le sait bien aussi.
18 Ils firent tous deux alliance devant l’Éternel ; et David resta dans la forêt, et Jonathan s’en alla chez lui.
alliance. D’autres allusions à cette profonde amitié se trouvent en #1S 19: 1 ; #1S 20: 8, #1S 20:13-17, #1S 20: 42 ; #1S 22: 8 ; #1S 23: 18.
Cf. #1S 18: 1, #1S 18: 3. Jonathan et David s’étaient solennellement promis amitié et loyauté devant l’Éternel. Ils précisèrent les clauses de leur alliance aux vv. #1S 20:13-17, #1S 20: 42 ; #1S 23:17-18.
19 ¶ Les Ziphiens montèrent auprès de Saül à Guibea, et dirent : David n’est-il pas caché parmi nous dans des lieux forts, dans la forêt, sur la colline de Hakila, qui est au midi du désert ?
colline de Hakila. Emplacement inconnu, quelque part entre Ziph et la mer Morte. Voir #Ps 54:1-2.
20 Descends donc, ô roi, puisque c’est là tout le désir de ton âme ; et à nous de le livrer entre les mains du roi.
21 Saül dit : Que l’Éternel vous bénisse de ce que vous avez pitié de moi !
22 Allez, je vous prie, prenez encore des informations pour savoir et découvrir dans quel lieu il a dirigé ses pas et qui l’y a vu, car il est, m’a-t-on dit, fort rusé.
23 Examinez et reconnaissez tous les lieux où il se cache, puis revenez vers moi avec quelque chose de certain, et je partirai avec vous. S’il est dans le pays, je le chercherai parmi tous les milliers de Juda.
24 Ils se levèrent donc et allèrent à Ziph avant Saül. David et ses gens étaient au désert de Maon, dans la plaine au midi du désert.
désert de Maon. Région infertile près de Maon (cf. #Jos 15: 48, #Jos 15: 55), à environ 8 km au sud de Ziph.
25 Saül partit avec ses gens à la recherche de David. Et l’on en informa David, qui descendit le rocher et resta dans le désert de Maon. Saül, l’ayant appris, poursuivit David au désert de Maon.
le rocher. C’était un point de repère dans le désert de Maon. Il allait bientôt recevoir un nom (v. #1S 23: 28).
26 Saül marchait d’un côté de la montagne, et David avec ses gens de l’autre côté de la montagne. David fuyait précipitamment pour échapper à Saül. Mais déjà Saül et ses gens entouraient David et les siens pour s’emparer d’eux,
entouraient David. Saül sépara son armée en deux groupes pour encercler David.
27 lorsqu’un messager vint dire à Saül : Hâte-toi de venir, car les Philistins ont fait invasion dans le pays.
les Philistins ont fait invasion dans le pays. Providentiellement, un messager vint annoncer à Saül que les Philistins avaient envahi Israël, et il n’eut donc pas d’autre choix que de faire demi-tour et de remettre à plus tard sa poursuite de David.
28 Saül cessa de poursuivre David, et il s’en retourna pour aller à la rencontre des Philistins. C’est pourquoi l’on appela ce lieu Séla-Hammachlekoth.
Séla-Hammachlekoth. Ou « le rocher des séparations ». Le départ des hommes de Saül juste au bon moment inspira ce nom.
29 (24-1) De là David monta vers les lieux forts d’En-Guédi, où il demeura.

¶ 1 We told David, Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the areas.
Keila. A city on the western hills of Judah (see #Jos 15 44), about 29 km south-west of Jerusalem and 5 km southeast of Adullam.
2 David inquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And the LORD said unto him, Go, smite the Philistines, and save Keilah.
inquired of the LORD. He did it through sacred objects, the Urim and Thummim, preserved in priestly ephod Abiathar had brought with him (v # 1S. 23: 6).
3 But David's men said unto him, Behold, we are not safely here in Judah; what will it be if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?
4 And David inquired of the LORD. And the LORD said unto him, Arise, go down to Keilah, for I will deliver the Philistines into your hands.
5 David went with his men to Keilah, and fought against the Philistines; away their cattle, and slew them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.
6 When Abiathar son of Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, he came down with an ephod in his hand.
7 ¶ Saul was informed of the arrival of David to Keilah, and he said, God has delivered him into my hand, because it came locked in a city that has gates and bars.
gates and bars. Literally "two doors and a bar." They placed a heavy bar across two wooden shutters to close the entrance. So there was only one door in the walls of Keilah. Since there was only one way to get in and out of the city, Saul thought he had trapped David.
8 And Saul called all the people to war, to go down to Keilah to besiege David and his men.
9 David heard of their evil design against him that Saul said to Abiathar the priest, Bring the ephod!
10 And David said, O LORD God of Israel, thy servant heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah to destroy the city because of me.
11 The people of Keilah me they deliver into his hands? Saul come down, as your servant has heard? LORD God of Israel, beseech thee, tell thy servant! And the LORD said, He will come down.
they deliver me. David inquired again of Jehovah, using the ephod with the Urim and Thummim as revelation means of divine will. He wanted to know if the men of Keilah would prove disloyal and deliver Saul. And he said yes (v # 1S. 23: 12).
12 David said, The men of Keilah deliver they me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the LORD said, They will deliver thee.
13 David arose and his men numbering about six hundred men; out of Keilah, and went wherever they could. Saul that David had escaped from Keilah, suspended its course.
people ... six hundred. where David had only 400 men.
14 ¶ David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained on the mountain wilderness of Ziph. Saul sought him, but God delivered him not in his hands.
in the wilderness, in the strongholds. The Judean wilderness was the infertile desert region between the hills and the Dead Sea. Many ravines and caves are in this rugged area where David hid from Saul. The #PS 63: 1 may refer to this incident or 2S # 15: 23-28.
wilderness of Ziph. The wilderness surrounding Ziph, about 6 km south of Hebron.
God delivered him not. God sovereignly protected David to accomplish his own purposes (see #Esa 46: 9-11).
15 David saw that Saul was come out to seek his life, stood in the wilderness of Ziph, in the forest.
16 It was then that Jonathan, Saul's son, arose and came to David in the forest. And strengthened his confidence in God,

strengthened his confidence in God. Jonathan encouraged David by reminding him of the promise of the Lord and his interest in him, assuring him that the Lord would make him the next king of Israel, Saul knew that (see # 1S 20: 30-31 ).
17 and said to him: Fear not, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you. You king over Israel, and I will be next to you; Saul my father knows that also.
18 And they two made a covenant before the Lord; and David abode in the wood, and Jonathan went home.
alliance. Other allusions to the profound friendship lie # 1S 19: 1; # 1S 20: 8, # 1S 20: 13-17, # 1S 20: 42; # 1S 22: 8; # 1S 23: 18.
See # 1S 18: 1, # 1S 18: 3 Jonathan and David had solemnly promised friendship and loyalty before Jehovah. They stated the terms of their alliance in vv. # 1S 20: 13-17, # 1S 20: 42; # 1S 23: 17-18.
¶ 19 The Ziphites went up to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Is David not hiding with us in strongholds in the forest, on the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of the desert?
hill of Hachilah. unknown location somewhere between Ziph and the Dead Sea. See #PS 54: 1-2.
20 Come down, O king, that is all the desire of your soul; and we deliver him into the hands of the king.
21 Saul said, The LORD bless you for what you have mercy on me!
22 Go, I pray you, prepare yet, and know and see in what place he directed his steps and which has seen him there, for it is, I am am told, very tricky.
23 and take knowledge of all the places where he hides and return to me with something certain, and I will go with you. If it is in the country, I will search among all the thousands of Judah.
24 And they arose and went to Ziph before Saul. David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the plains south of the desert.
wilderness of Maon. Infertile region near Maon (cf. #Jos 15: 48 #Jos 15: 55), about 8 km south of Ziph.
25 Saul and his men went in search of David. And was informed by David, who descended the rock and stayed in the wilderness of Maon. Saul heard that, he pursued David in the wilderness of Maon.
the rock. It was a landmark in the wilderness of Maon. He would soon receive a name (v # 1S. 23: 28).
