1 ¶ Salomon ordonna que l’on bâtît une maison au nom de l’Éternel et une maison royale pour lui.
2:1-18
Cette section rapporte la manière dont Salomon choisit des hommes chargés de rassembler des matériaux de construction pour le temple. Cela s’ajoutait à tout ce que David avait déjà préparé (cf. #1Ch 22 ; #1Ch 29). Voir le passage parallèle en #1R 5:1-16.
maison au nom de l’Éternel. C’est le nom d’alliance de Dieu, « l’Éternel » ou Yahvé (cf. #Ex 3:14), qui est utilisé. David voulait construire ce temple, mais il dut se contenter de planifier et préparer le projet (#1Ch 23:1-26:2 ; #1Ch 28:11-13), d’acheter le terrain (#2S 24:18-25 ; #1Ch 22) et de rassembler le matériel nécessaire (#1Ch 22:14-16).
maison royale. Voir #1R 7:1-12 pour plus de détails (cf. #2Ch 7:11 ; #2Ch 8:1).
2 Salomon compta soixante-dix mille hommes pour porter les fardeaux, quatre-vingt mille pour tailler les pierres dans la montagne, et trois mille six cents pour les surveiller.
Ces nombres sont repris aux vv. #2Ch 2:17-18. Le v. 18 parle de 3600 surveillants, alors que #1R 5:16 en mentionne 3300. Cependant, si l’on compte les surveillants supplémentaires (250 en #2Ch 8:10 et 550 en #1R 9:23), on arrive dans les deux cas à un total de 3850 travailleurs. David avait fait la même démarche que son fils, en son temps (#1Ch 22: 2).
3 Salomon envoya dire à Huram, roi de Tyr : Fais pour moi comme tu as fait pour David, mon père, à qui tu as envoyé des cèdres afin qu’il se bâtît une maison d’habitation.
2:3-10
La comparaison avec #1R 5:3-6 amène à relever certaines différences, mais comme dans le cas des Évangiles, il est possible de combiner les deux récits pour arriver à une perception complète des événements.
4 Voici, j’élève une maison au nom de l’Éternel, mon Dieu, pour la lui consacrer, pour brûler devant lui le parfum odoriférant, pour présenter continuellement les pains de proposition, et pour offrir les holocaustes du matin et du soir, des sabbats, des nouvelles lunes, et des fêtes de l’Éternel, notre Dieu, suivant une loi perpétuelle pour Israël.
5 La maison que je vais bâtir doit être grande, car notre Dieu est plus grand que tous les dieux.
6 Mais qui a le pouvoir de lui bâtir une maison, puisque les cieux et les cieux des cieux ne peuvent le contenir ? Et qui suis-je pour lui bâtir une maison, si ce n’est pour faire brûler des parfums devant lui ?
7 Envoie-moi donc un homme habile pour les ouvrages en or, en argent, en airain et en fer, en étoffes teintes en pourpre, en cramoisi et en bleu, et connaissant la sculpture, afin qu’il travaille avec les hommes habiles qui sont auprès de moi en Juda et à Jérusalem et que David, mon père, a choisis.
Envoie-moi … un homme habile. Les Israélites s’y connaissaient en agriculture, pas dans le travail du métal. Ils durent donc faire appel à des experts.
8 Envoie-moi aussi du Liban des bois de cèdre, de cyprès et de sandal ; car je sais que tes serviteurs s’entendent à couper les bois du Liban. Voici, mes serviteurs seront avec les tiens.
santal. Selon certains, le terme hébreu désignait un conifère de la chaîne du Liban. Le santal était un bois rouge et cher qui pouvait devenir très lisse et brillant.
9 Que l’on me prépare du bois en abondance, car la maison que je vais bâtir sera grande et magnifique.
10 Je donnerai à tes serviteurs qui couperont, qui abattront les bois, vingt mille cors de froment foulé, vingt mille cors d’orge, vingt mille baths de vin, et vingt mille baths d’huile.
Cette liste est plus complète que celle de #1R 5:11. L’exploitation du Liban permettait un échange régulier de nourriture avec Israël.
vingt mille mesures. Environ 6000 tonnes.
vingt mille baths. 800 000 litres. Les « vingt mesures d’huile d’olives concassées » de #1R 5:11 correspondent probablement à une huile de qualité supérieure et ne sont pas le fruit d’une erreur de copiste.
11 ¶ Huram, roi de Tyr, répondit dans une lettre qu’il envoya à Salomon : C’est parce que l’Éternel aime son peuple qu’il t’a établi roi sur eux.

12 Huram dit encore : Béni soit l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël, qui a fait les cieux et la terre, de ce qu’il a donné au roi David un fils sage, prudent et intelligent, qui va bâtir une maison à l’Éternel et une maison royale pour lui !
Dieu … qui a fait les cieux et la terre. C’était ainsi que les païens identifiaient le vrai Dieu et que les Juifs le leur présentaient (cf. #2Ch 36:23 ; #Esd 1:2 ; #Esd 5:11-12 ; #Esd 6:10 ; #Esd 7:12, #Esd 7:21, #Esd 7:23 ; #Jér 10:11-12 ; #Ac 4:24 ; #Ac 14: 15 ; #Ac 17:24-26 ; #Col 1:16-17 ; #Ap 11:1, #Ap 11:6).
13 Je t’envoie donc un homme habile et intelligent, (2-14) Huram-Abi,
2:13-14
Huram-Abi. D’après #1R 7:14, sa mère venait de la tribu de Nephthali, et non de Dan. Peut-être, était-elle née dans la tribu de Nephthali et avait-elle vécu sur le territoire de Dan. Si ses parents étaient originaires des deux tribus, elle pouvait aussi légitimement revendiquer l’appartenance à l’une comme à l’autre. Huram était en quelque sorte le « Betsaleel » du tabernacle (#Ex 31:2).
14 fils d’une femme d’entre les filles de Dan, et d’un père Tyrien. Il est habile pour les ouvrages en or, en argent, en airain et en fer, en pierre et en bois, en étoffes teintes en pourpre et en bleu, en étoffes de byssus et de carmin, et pour toute espèce de sculptures et d’objets d’art qu’on lui donne à exécuter. Il travaillera avec tes hommes habiles et avec les hommes habiles de mon seigneur David, ton père.
15 Maintenant, que mon seigneur envoie à ses serviteurs le froment, l’orge, l’huile et le vin dont il a parlé.
16 Et nous, nous couperons des bois du Liban autant que tu en auras besoin ; nous te les expédierons par mer en radeaux jusqu’à Japho, et tu les feras monter à Jérusalem.
Japho. Port important d’Israël. Jonas y embarquerait (#Jon 1:3), et Pierre y recevrait un appel de Dieu par l’intermédiaire d’une vision (#Ac 10:5).
17 Salomon compta tous les étrangers qui étaient dans le pays d’Israël, et dont le dénombrement avait été fait par David, son père. On en trouva cent cinquante-trois mille six cents.
18 Et il en prit soixante-dix mille pour porter les fardeaux, quatre-vingt mille pour tailler les pierres dans la montagne, et trois mille six cents pour surveiller et faire travailler le peuple.

1 Solomon commanded that a house should be built in the name of the Lord, and a royal house for him.
2: 1-18
This section reports how Solomon chose men to gather building materials for the temple. This was in addition to all that David had already prepared (see # 1Ch 22; # 1Ch 29). See the parallel passage in # 1R 5: 1-16.
House in the name of the Lord. It is the covenant name of God, "the Lord" or Yahweh (cf. Ex. 3:14), which is used. David wanted to build this temple, but he had to content himself with planning and preparing the project (# 1Ch 23: 1-26: 2; # 1Ch 28: 11-13), to buy the land (# 2S 24: 18-25 ; # 1Ch 22) and to gather the necessary material (# 1Ch 22: 14-16).
Royal house. See # 1R 7: 1-12 for more details (see # 2Ch 7:11; # 2Ch 8: 1).
2 Solomon numbered seventy thousand to bear the burdens, eighty thousand to cut the stones in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred to watch over them.
These numbers are given in vv. # 2Ch 2: 17-18. The v. 18 speaks of 3600 supervisors, while # 1R 5:16 mentions 3300. However, if we count the additional supervisors (250 in # 2Ch 8:10 and 550 in # 1R 9:23), we arrive in both Cases to a total of 3850 workers. David had done the same thing as his son in his time (# 1Ch 22: 2).
3 And Solomon sent to Huram king of Tire, saying, "Do to me as you did to David my father, to whom you sent cedars to build a dwelling house.

The comparison with # 1R 5: 3-6 brings to light certain differences, but as in the case of the Gospels, it is possible to combine the two narratives to arrive at a complete perception of events.
4 Behold, I have built a house in the name of the LORD my God, to burn it before him, to burn before him the fragrant smell, to present continually the loaves of offer, and to offer the burnt offerings of morning and evening, Sabbaths, new moons, and feasts of the Lord our God, according to a perpetual law for Israel.
5 The house which I am about to build must be great, for our God is greater than all the gods.
6 But who has power to build a house for him, since the heavens and the heavens of heaven can not contain him? And who am I to build him a house, except to burn incense before him?
7 Send me therefore a man skilful for works of gold, silver, brass, and iron, made of purple, crimson, and blue, and knowing the sculpture, that he may work with the able men who Are with me in Judah and Jerusalem, and whom David my father has chosen.
Send me ... a clever man. The Israelites were acquainted with agriculture, not with the work of metal. They had to call on experts.
8 Send me also cedar, cypress and sandal from Lebanon; For I know that thy servants are willing to cut the woods of Lebanon. Behold, my servants will be with yours.
sandalwood. According to some, the term Hebrew meant a conifer of the Lebanese range. Sandalwood was a red and expensive wood that could become very smooth and shiny.
9 Let there be plenty of wood for me, for the house which I am about to build will be great and magnificent.
10 And I will give to thy servants that cut, and cut down the woods, twenty thousand corn of wheat, twenty thousand barley, twenty thousand baths of wine, and twenty thousand baths of oil.
This list is more complete than # 1R 5:11. The exploitation of Lebanon enabled a regular exchange of food with Israel.
Twenty thousand measures. About 6000 tons.
Twenty thousand baths. 800,000 liters. The "twenty measures of crushed olive oil" of # 1R 5:11 probably correspond to a higher quality oil and are not the result of a copyist's error.
11 And Huram king of Tire answered in a letter which he sent to Solomon, saying, Because the LORD loveth his people, he hath made thee king over them.

Compare with the context of # 1R 5: 7-9.
12 Huram said, "Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, who made the heavens and the earth, because he gave David a wise, prudent, and wise son, The Lord and a royal house for him!
God ... who made the heavens and the earth. It was thus that the Gentiles identified the true God and that the Jews presented it to him (see # 2Ch 36:23; #Esd 1: 2; #Esd 5: 11-12; #Esd 6:10; #Esd 7 : 12, #Esd 7:21, #Esd 7:23, # Jer 10: 11-12, #Ac 4:24, #Ac 14:15, #Ac 17: 24-26, #Col 1: 16-17 ; #Ap 11: 1; #Ap 11: 6).
13 I send you a clever and intelligent man, (2-14) Huram-Abi,

Huram-Abi. According to # 1R 7:14 his mother came from the tribe of Naphtali, and not from Dan. Perhaps she was born in the tribe of Naphtali and lived in the land of Dan. If her parents were from both tribes, she could legitimately claim membership in both. Huram was in a way the "Betsaleel" of the tabernacle (#Ex 31: 2).
14 The son of a woman of the daughters of Dan, and of a Tyrian father. He is skilful for works of gold, silver, brass, and iron, stone and wood, purple and blue fabrics, fabrics of byssus and carmine, and for all kinds of sculptures and carvings, Objects of art which it is given to perform. He will work with thy skillful men and with the able men of my lord David thy father.
15 Now let my lord send to his servants the wheat, the barley, the oil, and the wine of which he spoke.
16 And we will cut down the woods of Lebanon as much as you need; We will send them to you by sea in rafts to Japho, and bring them up to Jerusalem.
Japho. Important port of Israel. Jonah would embark (Jn. 1: 3), and Peter would receive a call from God through a vision (Acts 10: 5).
17 And Solomon counted all the strangers that were in the land of Israel, whose number was numbered by David his father. They found one hundred and fifty-three thousand six hundred.
18 And he took seventy thousand to carry the burdens, eighty thousand to cut the stones in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred to watch and work the people.
