1 ¶ Josaphat, son fils, régna à sa place. (17-2) Il se fortifia contre Israël:

17:1-2
Josaphat fit des préparatifs militaires destinés à permettre à la nation de résister aux attaques, surtout celles en provenance du royaume du nord, d’Israël.
2 il mit des troupes dans toutes les villes fortes de Juda, et des garnisons dans le pays de Juda et dans les villes d’Éphraïm dont Asa, son père, s’était emparé.
3 L’Éternel fut avec Josaphat, parce qu’il marcha dans les premières voies de David, son père, et qu’il ne rechercha point les Baals ;
17:3-9
Josaphat entreprit trois démarches stratégiques, spirituellement parlant:
1° il obéit à l’Éternel (vv. #2Ch 17:3-6);
2° il supprima les cultes idolâtriques du pays (v. #2Ch 17: 6);
3° il envoya des sacrificateurs enseigner la loi de l’Éternel au peuple (vv. #2Ch 17:7-9).
les Baals. Terme désignant les idoles en général. Cf. #Jug 2:11-13.
4 car il eut recours au Dieu de son père, et il suivit ses commandements, sans imiter ce que faisait Israël.
5 L’Éternel affermit la royauté entre les mains de Josaphat, à qui tout Juda apportait des présents, et qui eut en abondance des richesses et de la gloire.
6 Son cœur grandit dans les voies de l’Éternel, et il fit encore disparaître de Juda les hauts lieux et les idoles.
7 La troisième année de son règne, il chargea ses chefs Ben-Haïl, Abdias, Zacharie, Nethaneel et Michée, d’aller enseigner dans les villes de Juda.
8 Il envoya avec eux les Lévites Schemaeja, Nethania, Zebadia, Asaël, Schemiramoth, Jonathan, Adonija, Tobija et Tob-Adonija, Lévites, et les sacrificateurs Elischama et Joram.
9 Ils enseignèrent dans Juda, ayant avec eux le livre de la loi de l’Éternel. Ils parcoururent toutes les villes de Juda, et ils enseignèrent parmi le peuple.
10 ¶ La terreur de l’Éternel s’empara de tous les royaumes des pays qui environnaient Juda, et ils ne firent point la guerre à Josaphat.
17:10-11
La stratégie spirituelle de Josaphat atteignit son but, puisqu’il jouit de la bénédiction et de la protection divines, à l’instar d’Abija (#2Ch 13:2-20) et d’Asa (#2Ch 14:8-14). Les Juifs avaient besoin d’animaux pour leurs nombreux sacrifices, mais aussi pour la nourriture et la confection de vêtements.
11 Des Philistins apportèrent à Josaphat des présents et un tribut en argent ; et les Arabes lui amenèrent aussi du bétail, sept mille sept cents béliers et sept mille sept cents boucs.
12 Josaphat s’élevait au plus haut degré de grandeur. Il bâtit en Juda des châteaux et des villes pour servir de magasins.
17:12-13
Ces vv. soulignent l’immense richesse accumulée par l’effet de la bénédiction divine (cf. #2Ch 18: 1), de même que la formidable puissance militaire de Juda (vv. #2Ch 17:14-19).
13 Il fit exécuter beaucoup de travaux dans les villes de Juda, et il avait à Jérusalem de vaillants hommes pour soldats.
14 Voici leur dénombrement, selon les maisons de leurs pères. De Juda, chefs de milliers : Adna, le chef, avec trois cent mille vaillants hommes ;
15 et à ses côtés, Jochanan, le chef, avec deux cent quatre-vingt mille hommes ;
16 et à ses côtés, Amasia, fils de Zicri, qui s’était volontairement consacré à l’Éternel, avec deux cent mille vaillants hommes.
17 De Benjamin : Éliada, vaillant homme, avec deux cent mille hommes armés de l’arc et du bouclier,
18 et à ses côtés, Zozabad, avec cent quatre-vingt mille hommes armés pour la guerre.
19 Tels sont ceux qui étaient au service du roi, outre ceux que le roi avait placés dans toutes les villes fortes de Juda.

17: 1-2
Jehoshaphat made military preparations for the nation to resist attacks, especially those from the northern kingdom of Israel.
2 And he put troops in all the fortified cities of Judah, and garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim, whose father Asa his father had taken.
3 The LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of David his father, and did not seek the Baals;

Josaphat undertook three strategic steps, spiritually speaking:
(1) he obeys the LORD (vv. 2Ch 17: 3-6);
(2) he suppressed the idolatrous cults of the land (v. # 2Ch 17: 6);
(3) He sent priests to teach the law of the LORD to the people (vv. 2Ch 17: 7-9).
The Baals. Term designating idols in general. Cf. #Jug 2: 11-13.
4 For he had recourse to the God of his father, and he followed his commandments, without imitating what Israel did.
5 And Jehovah established the kingdom in the hand of Jehoshaphat, to whom all Judah brought presents, and had abundance of riches and glory.
6 And his heart grew in the ways of the LORD, and he made the high places and the idols to disappear from Judah.
7 In the third year of his reign, he charged his chiefs Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethaneel, and Micah, to go and teach in the cities of Judah.
8 And he sent with them the Levites Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jonathan, Adonijah, Tobiah and Tob-Adonijah, Levites, and Elischama and Joram the priests.
9 And they taught in Judah, having with them the book of the law of the LORD. They traveled all the cities of Judah, and they taught among the people.
10 ¶ And the terror of the LORD came upon all the kingdoms of the countries round about Judah, and they made no war with Jehoshaphat.
17: 10-11
Jehoshaphat's spiritual strategy achieved its goal, since it enjoyed the divine blessing and protection, like Abijah (# 2Ch 13: 2-20) and Asa (# 2Ch 14: 8-14 ). The Jews needed animals for their many sacrifices, but also for food and clothing.
11 Of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents and a tribute of silver; And the Arabs also brought him cattle, seven thousand and seven hundred rams, and seven thousand and seven hundred goats.
12 Jehoshaphat was in the highest degree of greatness. He built castles and towns in Judah to serve as stores.
17: 12-13
These vv. Emphasize the immense wealth accumulated by the effect of the divine blessing (cf. # 2Ch 18: 1), as well as the formidable military power of Judah (vv. 2Ch 17: 14-19).
13 He had many works executed in the cities of Judah, and he had valiant men for soldiers in Jerusalem.
14 This is their number, according to the house of their fathers. Of Judah, heads of thousands: Adna, the chief, with three hundred thousand valiant men;
15 And at his side, Johanan the leader, with two hundred and eighty thousand men;
16 And beside him was Amasiah the son of Zichri, who had voluntarily consecrated himself to the LORD, with two hundred thousand valiant men.
17 Of Benjamin: Eliada, valiant man, with two hundred thousand men armed with bow and shield,
18 and at his side, Zozabad, with one hundred and eighty thousand men armed for war.
19 These were the servants of the king, besides those whom the king had placed in all the fortified cities of Judah.
