1 ¶ Manassé avait douze ans lorsqu’il devint roi, et il régna cinquante-cinq ans à Jérusalem.
33:1-20

2 Il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de l’Éternel, selon les abominations des nations que l’Éternel avait chassées devant les enfants d’Israël.
3 Il rebâtit les hauts lieux qu’Ézéchias, son père, avait renversés ; il éleva des autels aux Baals, il fit des idoles d’Astarté, et il se prosterna devant toute l’armée des cieux et la servit.
4 Il bâtit des autels dans la maison de l’Éternel, quoique l’Éternel eût dit: C’est dans Jérusalem que sera mon nom à perpétuité.
5 Il bâtit des autels à toute l’armée des cieux dans les deux parvis de la maison de l’Éternel.
6 Il fit passer ses fils par le feu dans la vallée des fils de Hinnom ; il observait les nuages et les serpents pour en tirer des pronostics, il s’adonnait à la magie, et il établit des gens qui évoquaient les esprits et qui prédisaient l’avenir. Il fit de plus en plus ce qui est mal aux yeux de l’Éternel, afin de l’irriter.
vallée … Hinnom. Vallée située au sud et à l’est du temple, où l’on offrait des sacrifices d’enfants en l’honneur de Moloc (#Ps 106:37). De telles pratiques étaient interdites par #Lé 18: 21 ; #Lé 20:2-5 ; #De 18: 10, mais elles étaient apparues en Israël dès l’époque d’Achaz (cf. #2Ch 28:3).
7 Il plaça l’image taillée de l’idole qu’il avait faite dans la maison de Dieu, de laquelle Dieu avait dit à David et à Salomon, son fils : C’est dans cette maison, et c’est dans Jérusalem que j’ai choisie parmi toutes les tribus d’Israël, que je veux à toujours placer mon nom.
8 Je ne ferai plus sortir Israël du pays que j’ai destiné à vos pères, pourvu seulement qu’ils aient soin de mettre en pratique tout ce que je leur ai commandé, selon toute la loi, les préceptes et les ordonnances prescrits par Moïse.
9 Mais Manassé fut cause que Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem s’égarèrent et firent le mal plus que les nations que l’Éternel avait détruites devant les enfants d’Israël.
10 L’Éternel parla à Manassé et à son peuple, et ils n’y firent point attention.
11 ¶ Alors l’Éternel fit venir contre eux les chefs de l’armée du roi d’Assyrie, qui saisirent Manassé et le mirent dans les fers ; ils le lièrent avec des chaînes d’airain, et le menèrent à Babylone.
33:11-17
La réaction divine ne tarda pas. Il semble que Manassé se soit repenti, mais de tels dégâts spirituels n’étaient pas facilement réversibles.
roi d’Assyrie. Certainement Osnappar, alias Assurbanipal (av. J.-C.). Entre 652 et 648 av. J.-C., Babylone se rebella contre l’Assyrie et fut temporairement vaincue. Supposant que Manassé avait soutenu la rébellion babylonienne, le roi assyrien le fit prisonnier.
12 Lorsqu’il fut dans la détresse, il implora l’Éternel, son Dieu, et il s’humilia profondément devant le Dieu de ses pères.
Manassé. Ce roi méchant et idolâtre avait assassiné ses propres enfants et profané le temple, mais dans sa grâce, Dieu lui pardonna (cf. #1Ti 1:15) lorsqu’il se repentit. Il fit alors son possible pour réparer les effets de sa mauvaise influence (vv. #2Ch 33:15-17). Les Judéens adorèrent alors l’Éternel, et non les idoles, mais ils le firent aux mauvais endroits et de la mauvaise manière. Si Dieu avait ordonné d’offrir des sacrifices à un endroit précis (#De 12:13-14), c’était pour les empêcher de corrompre les formes prescrites et pour les protéger de l’influence religieuse païenne. Leur désobéissance aux exigences divines dans ce domaine contribua certainement au déclin qui caractérisa le règne suivant, celui d’Amon (vv. #2Ch 33:21-25). Son successeur, Josias, devrait éliminer les effets de sa corruption (#2Ch 34:3-7).
13 Il lui adressa ses prières ; et l’Éternel, se laissant fléchir, exauça ses supplications, et le ramena à Jérusalem dans son royaume. Et Manassé reconnut que l’Éternel est Dieu.
14 Après cela, il bâtit en dehors de la ville de David, à l’occident, vers Guihon dans la vallée, un mur qui se prolongeait jusqu’à la porte des poissons et dont il entoura la colline, et il l’éleva à une grande hauteur ; il mit aussi des chefs militaires dans toutes les villes fortes de Juda.
Ce mur passait au sud du temple et de l’Ophel (« la colline », ouest de la vallée du Cédron) et continuait jusqu’à la porte des poissons, au nord-ouest du temple.
15 Il fit disparaître de la maison de l’Éternel les dieux étrangers et l’idole, et il renversa tous les autels qu’il avait bâtis sur la montagne de la maison de l’Éternel et à Jérusalem ; et il les jeta hors de la ville.
16 Il rétablit l’autel de l’Éternel et y offrit des sacrifices d’actions de grâces et de reconnaissance, et il ordonna à Juda de servir l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël.
17 Le peuple sacrifiait bien encore sur les hauts lieux, mais seulement à l’Éternel, son Dieu.
18 Le reste des actions de Manassé, sa prière à son Dieu, et les paroles des prophètes qui lui parlèrent au nom de l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël, cela est écrit dans les actes des rois d’Israël.

20 Manassé se coucha avec ses pères, et on l’enterra dans sa maison. Et Amon, son fils, régna à sa place.
21 ¶ Amon avait vingt-deux ans lorsqu’il devint roi, et il régna deux ans à Jérusalem.

23 et il ne s’humilia pas devant l’Éternel, comme s’était humilié Manassé, son père, car lui, Amon, se rendit de plus en plus coupable.
24 Ses serviteurs conspirèrent contre lui, et le firent mourir dans sa maison.
25 Mais le peuple du pays frappa tous ceux qui avaient conspiré contre le roi Amon ; et le peuple du pays établit roi Josias, son fils, à sa place.

1 ¶ Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem.
33: 1-20

2 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, according to the abominations of the nations which the LORD had driven out before the children of Israel.
3 He rebuilt the high places which Hezekiah his father had overthrown; He raised altars to the Baals, made idols of Astarte, and worshiped and ministered to all the host of heaven.
4 And he built altars in the house of the LORD, although the LORD said, "My name shall be in Jerusalem in perpetuity.
5 And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of Jehovah.
6 He caused his sons to pass through the valley of the sons of Hinnom; He watched the clouds and snakes in order to make predictions, he practiced magic, and established people who evoked spirits and predicted the future. He did more and more that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, that he might be angry.
Valley ... Hinnom. Valley to the south and east of the temple, where sacrifices of children were offered in honor of Moloc (#Ps 106: 37). Such practices were prohibited by # Lev. 18:21; # Le 20: 2-5; #En 18:10, but they had appeared in Israel from the time of Ahaz (cf. 2Ch 28: 3).
7 And he set the graven image of the idol which he had made in the house of God, of which God had spoken to David and to Solomon his son, and it is in this house, and in Jerusalem, I have chosen among all the tribes of Israel, that I will always put my name.
8 And I will not bring Israel out of the land which I have destined for your fathers, but only that they may do all that I have commanded them according to all the law, and the precepts, and the ordinances, which Moses commanded .
9 But Manasseh caused Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to go astray and do evil more than the nations which the Lord had destroyed before the children of Israel.
10 And the LORD spake unto Manasseh and to his people, and they paid no attention to it.
11 ¶ Then the LORD brought against them the captains of the host of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh and put him in chains; They bound him with chains of brass, and brought him to Babylon.
33: 11-17
The divine reaction was not long in coming. It seems that Manasseh repented, but such spiritual damage was not easily reversible.
King of Assyria. Certainly Osnappar, alias Assurbanipal (BC). Between 652 and 648 BC. AD Babylon rebelled against Assyria and was temporarily defeated. Supposing that Manasseh had supported the Babylonian rebellion, the Assyrian king made him a prisoner.
12 When he was in trouble, he begged the Lord his God, and he humbled himself deeply before the God of his fathers.
Manasseh. This wicked and idolatrous king had murdered his own children and profaned the temple, but in his grace God forgave him (cf. # 1Ti 1:15) when he repented. He did his best to repair the effects of his bad influence (vv # 2Ch 33: 15-17). The Judaeans then worshiped the Lord, not the idols, but they did it in the wrong places and in the wrong way. If God had ordered sacrifices to be offered at a specific place (# 12: 13-14), it was to prevent them from corrupting the prescribed forms and to protect them from pagan religious influence. Their disobedience to the divine requirements in this area certainly contributed to the decline which characterized the next reign, that of Amon (vv. 2Ch 33: 21-25). His successor, Josiah, should eliminate the effects of his corruption (# 2Ch 34: 3-7).
13 And he prayed unto him; And the LORD, letting himself be suppressed, answered his prayers, and brought him back to Jerusalem in his kingdom. And Manasseh knew that the LORD is God.
14 After this he built a wall outside the city of David, on the west, toward Guihon in the valley, which stretched out to the gate of the fish, and surrounded the hill, A great height; He also put military commanders in all the fortified cities of Judah.
This wall passed south of the temple and Ophel ("the hill", west of the Kidron Valley) and continued to the fish gate, northwest of the temple.
15 And he destroyed the alien gods and the idol from the house of the LORD, and overthrew all the altars that he had built in the mount of the house of the LORD, and in Jerusalem; And threw them out of the city.
16 He reinstated the altar of the Lord and offered sacrifices of thanksgiving and gratitude, and he commanded Judah to serve the LORD God of Israel.
17 And the people sacrificed great in the high places, but only to the LORD his God.
18 And the rest of the acts of Manasseh, and his prayer unto his God, and the words of the prophets, which spake unto him in the name of the LORD God of Israel, are written in the acts of the kings of Israel.

20 Manasseh slept with his fathers, and they buried him in his house. And Amon his son reigned in his stead.
21 ¶ Amon was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned two years in Jerusalem.

22 He did evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father Manasseh had done; He sacrificed to all the carved images made by Manasseh his father, and he served them;
23 And he did not humble himself before Jehovah, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself, for he, Amon, became more and more guilty.
24 And his servants conspired against him, and killed him in his house.
25 But the people of the land smote all those who had conspired against King Amon; And the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his stead.
