1 ¶ Un grand signe parut dans le ciel : une femme enveloppée du soleil, la lune sous ses pieds, et une couronne de douze étoiles sur sa tête.
signe. C’est-à-dire un symbole qui oriente les regards vers quelque chose d’autre. C’est le premier des sept signes de la seconde partie de l’Apocalypse. #Ap 12: 3 ; #Ap 13:13-14 ; #Ap 15: 1 ; #Ap 16: 14 ; #Ap 19: 20.
une femme. Pas une vraie femme, mais une représentation symbolique d’Israël, dépeint dans l’A.T. comme l’épouse de Dieu (#Esa 54:5-6 ; #Jér 3:6-8 ; #Jér 31:32 ; #Ez 16: 32 ; #Os 2:18). Trois autres femmes symboliques apparaissent dans l’Apocalypse:
1° Jézabel, qui représente le paganisme (#Ap 2:20);
2° la femme écarlate (#Ap 17:3-6), qui symbolise l’Église apostate;
3° l’épouse de l’Agneau (#Ap 19: 7), la véritable Église.
Le contexte montre clairement que cette femme-ci ne représente pas l’Église.
soleil, la lune … douze étoiles. Cf. #Ge 37:9-11. Le soleil suggère la dignité, la gloire et le statut élevé d’Israël, le peuple de la promesse, qui sera sauvé et à qui sera donné un royaume. La lune renvoie probablement à la relation entre Dieu et Israël dans le cadre de l’alliance, puisque les nouvelles lunes étaient associées à l’adoration (#1Ch 23: 31 ; #2Ch 2:4 ; #2Ch 8:13 ; #Esd 3:5 ; #Ps 81:3). Les douze étoiles représentent les douze tribus d’Israël.
2 Elle était enceinte, et elle criait, étant en travail et dans les douleurs de l’enfantement.
criait … dans les douleurs. Israël, souvent décrit comme une femme en train d’accoucher (cf. #Esa 26:17-18 ; #Esa 54:1 ; #Esa 66:7-12 ; #Os 13: 13 ; #Mi 4:10 ; #Mi 5:1-2 ; #Mt 24: 8), a enduré les pires souffrances pendant des siècles, en languissant après le Messie qui viendrait détruire Satan, le péché et la mort avant l’instauration de son royaume.
3 Un autre signe parut encore dans le ciel ; et voici, c’était un grand dragon rouge, ayant sept têtes et dix cornes, et sur ses têtes sept diadèmes.
grand dragon rouge feu. L’ennemi mortel de la femme, c’est Satan, qui apparaît 13 fois dans ce livre sous la forme d’un dragon (cf. v. #Ap 12:9 ; #Ap 20: 2). Le rouge suggère l’effusion de sang (cf. #Jn 8:44).
sept têtes et dix cornes … sept diadèmes. Langage figuratif pour dépeindre la domination de Satan sur les sept royaumes passés du monde et les dix royaumes à venir (cf. #Da 7:7, #Da 7:20, #Da 7:24). Satan a gouverné et continuera de gouverner le monde tant que la septième trompette n’aura pas sonné (#Ap 11:15). Il a infligé des souffrances incessantes à Israël (#Da 8:24), dans son désir de tuer la femme avant qu’elle n’ait le temps de donner naissance à l’enfant qui lui serait fatal.
4 Sa queue entraînait le tiers des étoiles du ciel, et les jetait sur la terre. Le dragon se tint devant la femme qui allait enfanter, afin de dévorer son enfant, lorsqu’elle aurait enfanté.
le tiers des étoiles du ciel. Dans sa rébellion originelle (cf. #Esa 14: 12; #Ez 28:11), Satan a entraîné à sa suite un tiers des anges, devenus des démons.
afin de dévorer son enfant. N’étant pas parvenu à empêcher la naissance virginale de Christ, Satan a essayé de le tuer à travers le massacre de tous les enfants mâles décrété par Hérode (#Mt 2:13-18 ; cf. #Lu 4:28-29).
5 Elle enfanta un fils, qui doit paître toutes les nations avec une verge de fer. Et son enfant fut enlevé vers Dieu et vers son trône.
un fils. Jésus-Christ, dans son incarnation, descendait de Juifs (#Mt 1:1 ; #2Ti 2:8). En dépit des efforts de Satan pour détruire Israël et la lignée messianique, la naissance de Jésus a bien eu lieu comme l’avaient annoncé les prophètes (cf. #Esa 7:14 ; #Esa 9:5 ; #Mi 5:1).
verge de fer. Décrit le couronnement de Jésus comme roi au-dessus des nations du monde (cf. #Ap 11:15 ; #Ap 19: 15 ; #Ps 2:6-9).
son enfant fut enlevé vers Dieu. Allusion à l’ascension de Christ (#Ac 1:9 ; #Ac 2:33 ; #Hé 1:1-3 ; #Hé 12:2).
6 Et la femme s’enfuit dans le désert, où elle avait un lieu préparé par Dieu, afin qu’elle y fût nourrie pendant mille deux cent soixante jours.
le désert. Dieu protégera Israël de Satan en le cachant au désert, peut-être dans la région de Moab, Ammon et Édom, à l’est d’Israël. Il est remarquable de constater que ces pays ne seront jamais touchés par les attaques de l’Antichrist contre la terre promise (cf. #Da 11:41).
mille deux cent soixante jours. Au milieu de la tribulation, l’Antichrist brisera son alliance avec Israël, interdira l’adoration dans le temple et fera commencer l’abomination de la désolation (#Da 9:27 ; #Mt 24: 15); Jérusalem sera dévastée (#Ap 11:2). C’est alors que de nombreux Juifs prendront la fuite pour essayer de sauver leur vie (#Mt 24: 16). Dieu les préservera pendant les 1260 derniers jours (42 mois, 3½ ans) qui constituent la grande tribulation.
7 Et il y eut guerre dans le ciel. Michel et ses anges combattirent contre le dragon. Et le dragon et ses anges combattirent,
il y eut guerre dans le ciel. Les événements tumultueux qui se dérouleront sur terre pendant la tribulation auront leur équivalent dans le ciel. Un état de guerre existe depuis la chute de Satan (cf. v. #Ap 12:4 ; cf. #Da 10:13 ; #Jude 9). Quelque chose intensifiera cette guerre, peut-être l’enlèvement des saints, qui passeront au travers du royaume de Satan, le prince de la puissance de l’air (cf. #Ep 2:2).
8 mais ils ne furent pas les plus forts, et leur place ne fut plus trouvée dans le ciel.
9 Et il fut précipité, le grand dragon, le serpent ancien, appelé le diable et Satan, celui qui séduit toute la terre, il fut précipité sur la terre, et ses anges furent précipités avec lui.
il fut précipité, le grand dragon … la terre. Satan et ses démons ont été chassés du ciel à l’époque de leur rébellion originelle, mais ils y ont encore accès (cf. #Job 1:6 ; #Job 2:1). Cet accès leur sera désormais interdit pour l’éternité.
appelé le diable et Satan. Cf. #Ap 20: 2. Le mot « diable » vient du verbe grec signifiant « calomnier » ou « accuser faussement ». C’est un menteur pervers (#Jn 8:44 ; #1Jn 3:8). Les accusations qu’il profère à l’encontre des croyants (v. #Ap 12:10) sont sans effet grâce à Christ, notre avocat (#1Jn 2:1). Le terme « Satan », du mot hébreu désignant un adversaire, un ennemi, apparaît le plus souvent dans Job et dans les Évangiles.
séduit toute la terre. Comme il le fait depuis toujours, Satan continuera à tromper les hommes, même pendant la tribulation (cf. #Ap 13: 14 ; #Ap 20: 3 ; #Jn 8:44). Après sa libération temporaire du puits de l’abîme à la fin du millénium, il sera autorisé pendant une brève période à reprendre ses activités de séducteur (#Ap 20: 8, #Ap 20: 10).
10 Et j’entendis dans le ciel une voix forte qui disait : Maintenant le salut est arrivé, et la puissance, et le règne de notre Dieu, et l’autorité de son Christ ; car il a été précipité, l’accusateur de nos frères, celui qui les accusait devant notre Dieu jour et nuit.
l’accusateur. Satan n’accusera plus les croyants devant le trône de Dieu, parce qu’il n’aura plus accès au ciel.
11 Ils l’ont vaincu à cause du sang de l’agneau et à cause de la parole de leur témoignage, et ils n’ont pas aimé leur vie jusqu’à craindre la mort.
sang de l’Agneau. Grâce à la mort de Christ en sacrifice (#Ro 8:33-39), les péchés des croyants ont été pardonnés, et aucune accusation ne peut plus être portée contre eux.
12 ¶ C’est pourquoi réjouissez-vous, cieux, et vous qui habitez dans les cieux. Malheur à la terre et à la mer ! car le diable est descendu vers vous, animé d’une grande colère, sachant qu’il a peu de temps.
sachant qu’il a peu de temps. Sachant son temps compté, Satan intensifiera ses efforts contre Dieu et contre l’humanité, et il visera particulièrement Israël (vv. #Ap 12:13, #Ap 12:17).
13 Quand le dragon vit qu’il avait été précipité sur la terre, il poursuivit la femme qui avait enfanté l’enfant mâle.
14 Et les deux ailes du grand aigle furent données à la femme, afin qu’elle s’envolât au désert, vers son lieu, où elle est nourrie un temps, des temps, et la moitié d’un temps, loin de la face du serpent.
ailes du grand aigle. Il ne s’agit pas des ailes d’un oiseau réel, mais d’une illustration frappante de la protection providentielle accordée par Dieu à Israël (cf. #Ex 19: 4). Les ailes évoquent souvent la protection (cf. #De 32:9-12 ; #Ps 91:4 ; #Esa 40:31). L’aigle probablement le vautour griffon - était l’oiseau le plus gros connu dans la région d’Israël.
un temps, des temps, et la moitié d’un temps. C’est-à-dire 3½ ans, la seconde moitié de la tribulation (cf. v. #Ap 12:6 ; #Ap 11:2-3 ; #Ap 13: 5).
15 Et, de sa bouche, le serpent lança de l’eau comme un fleuve derrière la femme, afin de l’entraîner par le fleuve.
16 Et la terre secourut la femme, et la terre ouvrit sa bouche et engloutit le fleuve que le dragon avait lancé de sa bouche.
la terre … ouvrit sa bouche. Une grande armée se lèvera contre Israël, pareille à un raz-de-marée (v. #Ap 12:15 ; cf. #Jér 46:8 ; #Jér 47:2), mais elle sera engloutie, peut-être grâce aux nombreux séismes qui secoueront la terre durant cette période (#Ap 6:12 ; #Ap 8:5 ; #Ap 11:13, #Ap 11:19 ; #Ap 16: 18 ; #Mt 24: 7).
17 Et le dragon fut irrité contre la femme, et il s’en alla faire la guerre aux restes de sa postérité, à ceux qui gardent les commandements de Dieu et qui ont le témoignage de Jésus.
reste de sa postérité. Fou de rage devant son impuissance, Satan se retournera contre tous les disciples de l’Agneau qu’il pourra trouver, qu’ils soient juifs ou païens.
commandements de Dieu … témoignage de Jésus. La vérité révélée par Dieu et par Christ telle qu’elle est contenue dans les Écritures. L’obéissance à la Parole de Dieu est la marque de tout croyant authentique. Cf. #Jn 8:32.
Revelation 12 : 1 TO 17
1 ¶ And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.
sign. That is to say, a symbol which directs attention towards something else. This is the first of seven signs of the second part of the Apocalypse. #Ap 12: 3; #Ap 13: 13-14; #Ap 15: 1; #Ap 16: 14; #Ap 19: 20.
a woman. Not a real woman but a symbolic representation of Israel, portrayed in the OT as the wife of God (#Esa 54: 5-6; Jer # 3: 6-8; Jer 31:32 #; #Ez 16: 32; #Os 2:18). Three other symbolic women appear in the Apocalypse:
1 Jezebel, which represents paganism (#Ap 2:20);
2. scarlet woman (#Ap 17: 3-6), which symbolizes the apostate Church;
3. Wife of the Lamb (#Ap 19: 7), the true Church.
The context makes clear that this woman does not represent the Church.
sun, moon ... twelve stars. #Ge Cf. 37: 9-11. The sun suggests the dignity and glory and the high status of Israel, the people of promise, who will be saved and who will be given a kingdom. The moon probably refers to the relationship between God and Israel as part of the covenant, since the new moons were associated with the worship (# 1Ch 23: 31; # 2Ch 2: 4; # 2Ch 8:13; #Esd 3: 5; #PS 81: 3). The twelve stars represent the twelve tribes of Israel.
2 She was pregnant, and she cried out, being in labor and in travail.
... cried in pain. Israel, often described as a woman giving birth (see #Esa 26: 17-18; #Esa 54: 1; #Esa 66: 7-12; #Os 13: 13; #Mi 4:10; # Mi 5: 1-2; #Mt 24: 8), endured the worst suffering for centuries, after languishing in the Messiah who would destroy Satan, sin and death before the establishment of his kingdom.
3 Then another sign appeared in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
large fire red dragon. The mortal enemy of women, it is Satan who appears 13 times in this book in the form of a dragon (cf. v #Ap. 12: 9; #Ap 20: 2). The red suggests bloodshed (see #Jn 8:44).
seven heads and ten horns ... seven crowns. Figurative language to portray Satan's dominion over the seven kingdoms of the world and spent the next ten kingdoms (cf. #Da 7: 7, 7:20 #Da, #Da 7:24). Satan ruled and continue to rule the world as the seventh trumpet will not ring (#Ap 11:15). He incessant suffering inflicted on Israel (#Da 8:24), in his desire to kill the woman before she has time to give birth to the child that would be fatal to him.
4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. The dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, to devour her child when it was born.
third of the stars of heaven. In its original rebellion (cf. #Esa 14: 12; #Ez 28:11), Satan led after him one third of the angels became demons.
to devour her child. Having failed to prevent the virgin birth of Christ, Satan tried to kill him through the slaughter of all male children decreed by Herod (#Mt 2: 13-18; cf. #Lu 4: 28-29) .
5 She bore a son, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her child was caught up to God and to his throne.
a son. Jesus Christ, in his incarnation, descended from Jews (#Mt 1: 1; # 2 Timothy 2: 8). In spite of Satan's efforts to destroy Israel and the Messianic line, Jesus' birth has taken place as had announced the prophets (cf. #Esa 7:14; #Esa 9: 5; #Mi 5: 1) .
iron rod. Described the crowning of Jesus as king over the nations of the world (cf. #Ap 11:15; #Ap 19: 15; #PS 2: 6-9).
her child was caught up to God. Referring to the ascension of Christ (#AC 1: 9; 2:33 #AC; # 1 Hey: 1-3; # Heb 12: 2).
6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared by God, that there they should feed one thousand two hundred sixty days.
the desert. God will protect Israel from Satan hiding in the desert, perhaps in the region of Moab, Ammon, Edom, to the east of Israel. It is remarkable that these countries will never be affected by the attacks of the Antichrist against the promised land (cf. #Da 11:41).
thousand two hundred and sixty days. In the midst of tribulation, the Antichrist will break his covenant with Israel, will prohibit the worship in the temple and will begin the abomination of desolation (#Da 9:27; #Mt 24: 15); Jerusalem will be devastated (#Ap 11: 2). That's when many Jews will flee to try to save their lives (#Mt 24: 16). God will preserve during the last 1260 days (42 months, 3½ years) who constitute the great tribulation.
7 And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. And the dragon fought and his angels,
There was war in heaven. The tumultuous events which will take place on earth during the tribulation will have their equivalent in the sky. A state of war has existed since the fall of Satan (cf. v #Ap 12: 4; cf. 10:13 #Da; #Jude 9.). Something intensify this war, perhaps the rapture of the saints, which will pass through the kingdom of Satan, the prince of the power of the air (see #EP 2: 2).
8 but they were not the strongest, and their place found any more in heaven.
9 And was cast the great dragon, that old serpent, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world he was hurled to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
was cast the great dragon ... the earth. Satan and his demons were cast out of heaven at the time of their original rebellion, but they still have access (see #Job 1: 6; #Job 2: 1). This access will now be prohibited for eternity.
called the Devil and Satan. See #Ap 20: 2. The word "devil" comes from the Greek verb meaning "slander" or "falsely accusing". This is a perverse liar (#Jn 8:44; 1 Jn # 3: 8). The charges he utters against believers (v #Ap 12:10.) Are without effect through Christ our attorney (# 1 Jn 2: 1). The term "Satan", the Hebrew word for an adversary, an enemy appears most often in Job and in the Gospels.
deceives the whole world. As it has since always, Satan will continue to deceive men, even during the tribulation (cf. #Ap 13: 14; #Ap 20: 3; #Jn 8:44). After his temporary release of the bottomless pit at the end of the millennium, he will be allowed for a short time to resume seducer activities (#Ap 20: 8, #Ap 20: 10).
10 And I heard in heaven a loud voice saying: Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ; because it was rushed, the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night.
the accuser. Satan no longer accuse believers before the throne of God, because he will not have access to heaven.
11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
Blood of the Lamb. Through Christ's death as a sacrifice (#Ro 8: 33-39), sins of believers are forgiven, and no charges can be brought against them.
¶ 12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in heaven. Woe to the earth and the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, knowing that he has little time.
knowing that he has little time. Knowing the counted time, Satan will intensify its efforts against God and against humanity, and it will focus particularly Israel (vv. #Ap 24:13, 12:17 #Ap).
13 When the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.
14 And two wings of a great eagle were given to the woman, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, times, and half a time, from the face the serpent.
wings of a great eagle. It's not about the wings of a real bird, but a striking illustration of the providential protection given by God to Israel (cf. #Ex 19: 4). The wings often mention protection (see # of 32: 9-12; #PS 91: 4; 40:31 #Esa). The griffon vulture probably the eagle - the bird was the largest known in the region of Israel.
a time and times and the dividing of time. That is to say 3½ years, the second half of the tribulation (cf. v #Ap. 12: 6; #Ap 11: 2-3; #Ap 13: 5).
15 And out of his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river after the woman, to the cause of the flood.
16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
... the earth opened its mouth. A large army will rise against Israel, like a tidal wave (v #Ap 12:15; cf. # Jer. 46: 8; Jer # 47: 2), but it will be swallowed up, perhaps through Many earthquakes that shake the earth during this period (#Ap 6:12; #Ap 8: 5; 11:13 #Ap, #Ap 11:19; #Ap 16: 18; #Mt 24: 7).
17 And the dragon was angry against the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus.
remnant of her seed. Mad with rage at his impotence, Satan will turn against all followers of the Lamb he can find, whether Jews or Gentiles.
commandments of God ... the testimony of Jesus. The truth revealed by God and Christ as contained in the Scriptures. Obedience to the Word of God is the mark of every true believer. See #Jn 8:32.
