1 ¶ Puis un des sept anges qui tenaient les sept coupes vint, et il m’adressa la parole, en disant : Viens, je te montrerai le jugement de la grande prostituée qui est assise sur les grandes eaux.
sept anges. La mention de ces anges assure le lien entre les ch. #Ap 17:1-18: 2 et les jugements des coupes du ch. #Ap 16 qui vont jusqu’au retour de Christ. Les ch. #Ap 17:1-18:2 se concentrent sur un aspect des coupes: le jugement de Babylone. Les jugements décrits plus tôt sont présentés comme visant le système final du monde.
grande prostituée. La prostitution symbolise fréquemment l’idolâtrie ou l’apostasie religieuse (cf. #Jér 3:6-9 ; #Ez 16: 30; #Ez 20: 30 ; #Os 4:15 ; #Os 5:3 ; #Os 6:10 ; #Os 9:1). Ninive (#Na 3:1, #Na 3:4), Tyr (#Esa 23: 17) et même Jérusalem (#Esa 1:21) sont décrites comme des villes prostituées.
assise sur les grandes eaux. Image qui souligne le pouvoir souverain de la prostituée. Elle évoque un roi assis sur son trône et commandant aux eaux, qui elles-mêmes symbolisent les nations du monde (voir le v. 15).
2 C’est avec elle que les rois de la terre se sont livrés à l’impudicité, et c’est du vin de son impudicité que les habitants de la terre se sont enivrés.
rois … se sont livrés à la débauche. La prostituée s’alliera aux chefs politiques du monde. La débauche ne désigne pas ici le péché sexuel, mais l’idolâtrie. Tous les gouvernants de la terre seront absorbés par l’empire du faux christ de Satan.
vin de sa débauche. L’influence de la prostituée s’étendra, au-delà des dirigeants du monde, au reste de l’humanité (cf. v. #Ap 17: 15 ; #Ap 13: 8, #Ap 13: 14). Il ne s’agit pas du fruit de la vigne ni du péché sexuel au sens littéral, mais de l’intoxication et du péché du faux système religieux dans lequel les hommes seront embrigadés.
3 Il me transporta en esprit dans un désert. Et je vis une femme assise sur une bête écarlate, pleine de noms de blasphème, ayant sept têtes et dix cornes.
en esprit dans un désert. Cf. #Ap 1:10 ; #Ap 4:2 ; #Ap 21: 10. Le Saint-Esprit transporte Jean dans le désert (un endroit désolé et solitaire), peut-être dans le but de lui permettre une meilleure compréhension de sa vision.
une femme. La prostituée du verset 1, Babylone.
bête écarlate. L’Antichrist (cf. #Ap 13: 1, #Ap 13: 4 ; #Ap 14: 9 ; #Ap 16: 10), qui pendant quelque temps soutiendra et utilisera le faux système religieux pour unifier le monde. Il en prendra alors le contrôle politique (cf. v. #Ap 17: 16). L’écarlate est la couleur du luxe, de la splendeur et de la royauté.
noms de blasphème. Du fait qu’il se sera autoproclamé Dieu (cf. #Ap 13: 1 ; #Da 7:25 ; #Da 11:36 ; #2Th 2:4).
sept têtes et dix cornes. Cela illustre l’étendue des alliances politiques de l’Antichrist.
4 Cette femme était vêtue de pourpre et d’écarlate, et parée d’or, de pierres précieuses et de perles. Elle tenait dans sa main une coupe d’or, remplie d’abominations et des impuretés de sa prostitution.
vêtue de pourpre et d’écarlate. Couleur de la royauté, de la noblesse et de l’opulence. Cette femme est décrite comme une prostituée dont les affaires ont été florissantes et l’ont placée à la tête d’une bonne fortune.
parée. Les prostituées s’habillent souvent de beaux vêtements et se parent de luxueux bijoux pour attirer les clients (cf. #Pr 7:10). La prostituée religieuse qu’est Babylone ne se comporte pas différemment pour attirer les nations dans ses filets.
coupe d’or. Encore un indice de la grande richesse de cette prostituée (cf. #Jér 51:7); pourtant, la pureté de son or est souillée par son immoralité et sa luxure. Tout comme les prostituées peuvent d’abord enivrer leurs clients, le système de cette femme consiste à tromper les nations en les entraînant dans sa débauche spirituelle.
5 Sur son front était écrit un nom, un mystère : Babylone la grande, la mère des impudiques et des abominations de la terre.
front. Les prostituées de Rome avaient coutume de porter au front un bandeau sur lequel était inscrit leur nom (cf. #Jér 3:3), faisant ainsi parade de leur misère morale. Le bandeau de la prostituée porte sur trois replis un titre décrivant le système de la fausse religion mondiale.
mystère. Dans le N.T., un mystère est une vérité qui était jadis cachée mais que le N.T. a révélée. La véritable identité de la Babylone spirituelle n’est pas encore révélée. Par conséquent, les détails de la façon dont elle s’y prendra pour manifester sa puissance dans le monde restent pour l’instant un mystère.
Babylone la grande. C’est une Babylone différente de celle dont on connaît l’histoire et la géographie (ville qui existait toujours à l’époque où Jean écrivait). Les détails de la vision de Jean ne sauraient s’appliquer à aucune ville historique
mère des prostituées. Toute fausse religion prend, en dernier lieu, sa source à Babel ou Babylone (cf. #Ge 11 ).
6 Et je vis cette femme ivre du sang des saints et du sang des témoins de Jésus. Et, en la voyant, je fus saisi d’un grand étonnement.
sang des saints … des témoins de Jésus. Certains voient dans le premier groupe les croyants de l’A.T., et dans le second ceux du N.T. La distinction est sans valeur car il est question ici des martyrs de la tribulation. Jean souligne que la prostituée est une criminelle. La fausse religion a tué des millions de croyants au cours des siècles, et le faux système final sera plus meurtrier que tous les autres avant lui.
7 ¶ Et l’ange me dit : Pourquoi t’étonnes-tu ? Je te dirai le mystère de la femme et de la bête qui la porte, qui a les sept têtes et les dix cornes.
mystère. Ce mystère n’est pas le fait que Babylone est un faux système religieux, puisque cela est déjà connu, mais le fait que la bête soutiendra de toutes ses forces la prostituée et qu’elles chercheront à exercer ensemble une influence sur le monde entier.
8 La bête que tu as vue était, et elle n’est plus. Elle doit monter de l’abîme, et aller à la perdition. Et les habitants de la terre, ceux dont le nom n’a pas été écrit dès la fondation du monde dans le livre de vie, s’étonneront en voyant la bête, parce qu’elle était, et qu’elle n’est plus, et qu’elle reparaîtra. —
La bête. Terme qui désigne autant un roi que son royaume.
était, et elle n’est plus … monter. Allusion à la fausse résurrection de l’Antichrist (#Ap 13:3-4, #Ap 13:12-14 ; voir la note sur 13: 3 {==> "Ap 13: 3"}).
de l’abîme. Après sa pseudo-résurrection, l’Antichrist sera possédé par un grand démon de l’abîme (voir les notes sur 13: 1 {==> "Ap 13: 1"}, 3 {==> "Ap 13: 3"}).
la perdition. La destruction éternelle (cf. verset #Ap 17: 11 ; #Mt 7:13 ; #Jn 17: 12 ; #Ph 1:28 ; #Ph 3:19 ; #2Th 2:3 ; #Hé 10:39 ; #2P 2:3 ; #2P 3:7, #2P 3:16). Il s’agit de l’étang de feu, l’endroit où l’Antichrist sera détruit (#Ap 19: 20).
le livre de vie. C’est-à-dire le registre des élus, écrit de toute éternité par Dieu (voir la note sur 3:5 {==> "Ap 3:5"}). Seuls les élus parviendront à déjouer les manœuvres trompeuses de l’Antichrist (#Mt 24: 24).
dès la fondation du monde. Voir la note sur 13: 8 {==> "Ap 13: 8"}; cf. #2Ti 1:9 ; #Tit 1:2 (« avant tous les siècles »). Expression fréquente pour désigner le plan établi par Dieu avant la création du monde (#Mt 13: 35 ; #Mt 25:34 ; #Lu 11:50 ; #Jn 17: 24 ; #Ep 1:4 ; #Hé 4:3 ; #Hé 9:26 ; #1Pi 1:20).
9 C’est ici l’intelligence qui a de la sagesse. — Les sept têtes sont sept montagnes, sur lesquelles la femme est assise.
sept montagnes. Le mot grec est souvent utilisé pour désigner des collines (#Mt 5:1 ; #Mt 15: 29 ; #Jn 6:15 ; #Jn 8:1). De nombreux commentateurs interprètent cette expression comme désignant Rome, qui s’étend sur sept collines. Certes, le système mondial final de la fausse religion inclut Rome, mais il n’est pas nécessairement limité à cette ville. Dans le contexte, les sept montagnes semblent symboliser les sept royaumes et leurs rois du v. 10.
10 Ce sont aussi sept rois : cinq sont tombés, un existe, l’autre n’est pas encore venu, et quand il sera venu, il doit rester peu de temps.
sept rois. Les représentants des sept grands empires mondiaux (l’Égypte, l’Assyrie, Babylone, l’Empire médo-perse, Grèce, Rome, et celui de l’Antichrist). Cf. l’image de Daniel en #Da 2:37-45.
cinq sont tombés, un existe, l’autre. Au moment où Jean écrivait, les empires égyptien, assyrien, babylonien, médo-perse et grec avaient disparu, mais Rome existait toujours, et l’empire de l’Antichrist n’était pas encore venu. Quand il sera là, ce sera pour une courte période (#Ap 12:12 ; #Ap 13: 5) et il terminera dans la perdition (verset #Ap 17: 11 ; voir la note sur le v. 8 {==> "Ap 17: 8"}).
11 Et la bête qui était, et qui n’est plus, est elle-même un huitième roi, et elle est du nombre des sept, et elle va à la perdition.
qui n’est plus … huitième. On dit que le royaume de l’Antichrist constitue aussi bien le 7e royaume que le 8e, du fait de ses prétendues mort et résurrection. Il est le 7e royaume avant sa disparition et le 8e dès sa pseudo-résurrection, au moment où il détruit l’empire religieux de la prostituée et exige que toute vénération lui revienne (v. #Ap 17: 16).
12 Les dix cornes que tu as vues sont dix rois, qui n’ont pas encore reçu de royaume, mais qui reçoivent autorité comme rois pendant une heure avec la bête.
dix rois. Voir les notes sur 12:3 {==> "Ap 12:3"}; 13: 1 {==> "Ap 13: 1"} (cf. #Da 2:41-42). Ces rois sont à la solde de l’Antichrist, dont l’empire sera apparemment divisé en dix districts administratifs.
pas encore reçu de royaume. Ainsi les rois ne peuvent pas être assimilés à des personnages historiques.
une heure. Manière symbolique de parler de la brièveté des 3½ ans (cf. #Ap 11:2-3 ; #Ap 12:6, #Ap 12:12, #Ap 12:14 ; #Ap 13: 5 ; #Ap 18: 10, #Ap 18: 17, #Ap 18: 19).
13 Ils ont un même dessein, et ils donnent leur puissance et leur autorité à la bête.
14 ¶ Ils combattront contre l’agneau, et l’agneau les vaincra, parce qu’il est le Seigneur des seigneurs et le Roi des rois, et les appelés, les élus et les fidèles qui sont avec lui les vaincront aussi.
combattront. Allusion à la bataille d’Harmaguédon (#Ap 16:14-16) où l’Agneau détruira entièrement les rois (#Ap 19:17-21).
le Seigneur des seigneurs et le Roi des rois. Titre de Dieu (#Ap 19: 16 ; #1Ti 6:15 ; cf. #De 10:17 ; #Ps 136:3) qui souligne sa souveraineté sur tous les dirigeants auxquels il a délégué une partie de son autorité.
15 Et il me dit : Les eaux que tu as vues, sur lesquelles la prostituée est assise, ce sont des peuples, des foules, des nations, et des langues.
16 Les dix cornes que tu as vues et la bête haïront la prostituée, la dépouilleront et la mettront à nu, mangeront ses chairs, et la consumeront par le feu.
haïront la prostituée. Après avoir utilisé le faux système religieux pour unifier les royaumes du monde et en prendre le contrôle, l’Antichrist avec l’aide de ses 10 rois vassaux - se retournera contre ce système pour le détruire, le piller et revendiquer les pleins pouvoirs et l’adoration de tous. Ils ne feront pourtant qu’accomplir la volonté de Dieu (v. #Ap 17: 17). Cf. #Ge 50:20.
17 Car Dieu a mis dans leurs cœurs d’exécuter son dessein et d’exécuter un même dessein, et de donner leur royauté à la bête, jusqu’à ce que les paroles de Dieu soient accomplies.
18 Et la femme que tu as vue, c’est la grande ville qui a la royauté sur les rois de la terre.
grande ville. Nouvelle allusion à la ville de Babylone, capitale et joyau de l’empire de l’Antichrist. Cf. #Ap 18: 10, #Ap 18: 18, #Ap 18: 21.
Revelation 17 : 1 TO 18
1 ¶ Then one of the seven angels holding the seven bowls came and spoke to me, saying, Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who sits on many waters.
seven angels. The mention of these angels is the link between c. #Ap 17: 1-18: 2 and judgments Cups ch. #Ap 16 that go until the return of Christ. The c. #Ap 17: 1-18: 2 focuses on one aspect of cuts: the judgment of Babylon. Judgments described earlier are presented as the final system to the world.
great prostitute. Prostitution frequently symbolizes idolatry or religious apostasy (see # Jer 3: 6-9; #Ez 16: 30; #Ez 20: 30; #Os 4:15; #Os 5: 3; 6 #Os : 10; #Os 9: 1). Nineveh (#NA 3: 1, 3 #NA: 4), Tyr (#Esa 23: 17) and even Jerusalem (1:21 #Esa) are described as prostitutes cities.
sits on many waters. Image highlighting the sovereign power of the prostitute. It evokes a king seated on his throne and commanding the waters, which themselves symbolize the nations of the world (see v. 15).
2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and with the wine of her fornication the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk.
kings ... have engaged in debauchery. The prostitute will ally with political leaders of the world. Debauchery does not refer here sexual sin, but idolatry. All the rulers of the land will be absorbed by the empire of the false christ of Satan.
wine of her debauchery. The influence of the prostitute will extend beyond of world leaders, the rest of humanity (cf. v #Ap 17: 15; #Ap. 13: 8, #Ap 13: 14). It is not the fruit of the vine or the sexual sin in the literal sense, but intoxication and sin of false religious system in which men will be regimented.
3 He carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
in the Spirit into a desert. #Ap Cf. 1:10; #Ap 4: 2; #Ap 21: 10. The Holy Spirit carries John in the Desert (a desolate and lonely place), perhaps in order to enable a better understanding of his vision.
a woman. The prostitute verse 1, Babylon.
scarlet beast. The Antichrist (cf. #Ap 13: 1, #Ap 13: 4; #Ap 14: 9; #Ap 16: 10), which for some time support and will use the false religious system to unify the world. It will then take the political control (see #Ap v. 17: 16). Scarlet is the color of luxury, grandeur and royalty.
blasphemous names. Because it is self-proclaimed God (cf. #Ap 13: 1; 7:25 #Da; #Da 11:36; # 2 Thess 2: 4).
seven heads and ten horns. This illustrates the extent of the political alliances of the Antichrist.
4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls. She held in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication.
arrayed in purple and scarlet. Color of royalty, nobility and opulence. This woman is described as a prostitute whose cases were flourishing and have placed at the head of a good fortune.
parried. Prostitutes often dress beautiful clothes and parent of luxury jewelry to attract customers (see #Pr 7:10). Religious prostitute Babylon what is not different features to lure nations into his net.
golden cup. Another indicator of the wealth of the prostitute (cf. # Jer 51: 7); Yet his purity of gold is tainted by immorality and lust. Just as prostitutes may first drunk customers, the system of this woman is to deceive the nations leading them in spiritual debauchery.
5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth.
forehead. The prostitutes of Rome were wont to wear a headband at the front on which was written the name (cf. Jer # 3: 3), thus parading their moral misery. The banner of the prostitute covers three folds a title describing the system of false world religion.
mystery. In the NT, a mystery is a truth that was once hidden but the NT has revealed. The real identity of spiritual Babylon is not yet revealed. Therefore, the details of how it will go about manifesting its power in the world remains a mystery for now.
Babylon the Great. This is a different from that Babylon with known history and geography (city that still existed at the time John wrote). The details of John's vision can not be applied to any historic city
mother of harlots. Any false religion takes, ultimately, its source in Babel or Babylon (cf. #Ge 11).
6 I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints and the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And, seeing her, I was seized with a great astonishment.
blood of the saints ... the martyrs of Jesus. Some see the first group of believers AT, and in the second those of the NT The distinction is worthless because we are talking here of the martyrs of the tribulation. John emphasizes that the prostitute is a criminal. False religion has killed millions of believers over the centuries, and the false final system will be more deadly than all the others before him.
7 ¶ And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman and the beast that carries her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.
mystery. This mystery is not that Babylon is a false religious system, since it is already known, but the fact that the beast will support with all its might the prostitute and together they seek to exercise influence worldwide.
8 The beast that you saw was and is no more. And shall ascend out of the bottomless pit and go to perdition. And the inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life, when they behold the beast that was, and is not and yet is. -
The beast. Term for a king so that his kingdom.
was, and is no longer ... up. Referring to the false resurrection of the Antichrist (#Ap 13: 3-4, #Ap 13: 12-14; see note on 13: 3 {==> "Rev 13: 3"}).
of the abyss. After his pseudo-resurrection Antichrist will be possessed by a great demon of the abyss (see notes on 13: 1 {==> "Rev 13: 1"}, {3 ==> "Rev 13: 3" }).
perdition. Eternal destruction (cf. verse #Ap 17: 11; #Mt 7:13; #Jn 17: 12; #Ph 1:28; 3:19 #Ph; # 2 Thess 2: 3; Heb 10:39 #; # 2P 2: 3; # 2P 3: 7, # 2P 3:16). This is the lake of fire, where the Antichrist will be destroyed (#Ap 19: 20).
the book of life. That is to say, the register of elected representatives, written from all eternity by God (see note on 3: 5 {==> "Rev 3: 5"}). Only elected manage to thwart deceptive maneuvers of the Antichrist (#Mt 24: 24).
from the foundation of the world. See note on 13: 8 {==> "Rev 13: 8"}; cf. # 2 Timothy 1: 9; #Tit 1: 2 ("before all ages"). Common term for the plan established by God before the creation of the world (#Mt 13: 35; 25:34 #Mt; #Lu 11:50; #Jn 17: 24; #EP 1: 4; Hey # 4: 3 ; # Heb 9:26; 1 Peter 1:20 #).
9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. - The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits.
seven mountains. The Greek word is often used to refer to the Hills (#Mt 5: 1; #Mt 15: 29; #Jn 6:15; #Jn 8: 1). Many commentators interpreted this phrase to mean Rome, which extends over seven hills. While the final global system of false religion includes Rome, but it is not necessarily limited to this city. In context, the seven mountains seem to symbolize the seven kingdoms and kings of the fifth. 10.
10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, one is, the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short time.
seven kings. Representatives of seven major world empires (Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persian Empire, Greece, Rome, and that of the Antichrist). See the image in #Da Daniel 2: 37-45.
five are fallen, one is, the other. By the time John wrote the Egyptian empires, Assyrian, Babylonian, Medo-Persian and Greek missing but Rome still existed, and the empire of the Antichrist was not yet come. When it gets here, it will be for a short period (#Ap 12:12; #Ap 13: 5) and end in perdition (v #Ap 17: 11; see note on v 8 {==>. "Rev 17: 8"}).
11 And the beast that was, and is not, is itself an eighth king, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.
which is no longer ... eighth. It is said that the kingdom of Antichrist is both the seventh kingdom that the 8th, because of his supposed death and resurrection. He is the seventh kingdom before his disappearance and 8th from its pseudo-resurrection, when he destroyed the religious empire of the prostitute and requires that all worship him back (v #Ap. 17: 16).
12 And the ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.
ten kings. See notes 12: 3 {==> "Rev 12: 3"}; 13: 1 {==> "Rev 13: 1"} (see #Da 2: 41-42). These kings are in the pay of the Antichrist, whose empire is apparently divided into ten administrative districts.
not yet received a kingdom. Thus the kings can not be treated as historical figures.
one hour. Symbolically speaking of the brevity of 3½ years (see #Ap 11: 2-3; #Ap 12: 6, 12:12 #Ap, #Ap 12:14; #Ap 13: 5; #Ap 18: 10 , #Ap 18: 17 #Ap 18: 19).
13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and authority to the beast.
14 ¶ These shall make war against the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and called, and chosen, and faithful are with him overcome as well.
fight. Referring to the battle of Armageddon (#Ap 16: 14-16) where the Lamb completely destroy kings (#Ap 19: 17-21).
Lord of lords and King of kings. Title of God (#Ap 19: 16; # 1Ti 6:15; cf. # of 10:17; #PS 136: 3), which stresses its sovereignty over all officers to whom he has delegated some of its authority.
15 And he said unto me, The waters which you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.
16 And the ten horns which you saw on the beast will hate the prostitute, and will also strip the naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire.
these will hate the prostitute. After using the false religious system to unite the kingdoms of the world and take control, the Antichrist with the help of its 10 vassal kings - will turn against that system to destroy, plunder and claim full powers and adoration of all. They will however qu'accomplir the will of God (v #Ap. 17: 17). See #Ge 50:20.
17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfill His purpose and be of one mind, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.
18 And the woman you saw is the great city, which reigns over the kings of the earth.
big city. New allusion to the city of Babylon, capital and jewel of the empire of the Antichrist. #Ap Cf. 18: 10, #Ap 18: 18 #Ap 18: 21.
