Apocalypse 8 : 1 À 13 *** + NOTES DE JOHN MACARTHUR +
1 ¶ Quand il ouvrit le septième sceau, il y eut dans le ciel un silence d’environ une demi-heure.
septième sceau. Ce sceau inclut non seulement un tremblement de terre mais aussi les jugements des trompettes (#Ap 8:1-9:21 ; #Ap 11:15ss) et ceux des coupes, qui découleront eux-mêmes de la 7e trompette en une succession de plus en plus rapide jusqu’au retour de Christ (voir la note sur 6:1 {==> "Ap 6:1"}).
dans le ciel un silence. Le silence de la crainte et de l’attente face à la dure réalité: Dieu est sur le point de déchaîner ses châtiments sur le monde.
2 Et je vis les sept anges qui se tiennent devant Dieu, et sept trompettes leur furent données.
sept trompettes. Dans l’Apocalypse, les trompettes annoncent avant tout un jugement imminent. L’intensité des jugements qu’elles annoncent est plus grande que pour les sceaux, mais moins destructrice que pour les coupes (cf. #Ap 16:1-21). Ils se déroulent pendant 3½ ans, mais leur durée individuelle n’est pas précisée, sauf pour la 5e trompette, dont les effets se font sentir durant 5 mois (#Ap 9:10). Les quatre premières annoncent la destruction par Dieu de l’environnement terrestre (vv. #Ap 8:6-12), alors que les trois dernières impliquent des ravages démoniaques contre les habitants de la terre (#Ap 9:1-21 ; #Ap 11:15ss).
3 Et un autre ange vint, et il se tint sur l’autel, ayant un encensoir d’or ; on lui donna beaucoup de parfums, afin qu’il les offrît, avec les prières de tous les saints, sur l’autel d’or qui est devant le trône.
encensoir. Récipient en or suspendu à une corde ou une chaîne, utilisé pour transporter les charbons ardents de l’autel de bronze jusqu’à l’autel des parfums, afin d’enflammer le parfum, symbole des prières du peuple (#Ap 5:8 ; #Ex 27:3 ; cf. #Lu 1:8-9). Cela se faisait deux fois par jour à l’occasion des sacrifices du matin et du soir.
4 La fumée des parfums monta, avec les prières des saints, de la main de l’ange devant Dieu.
5 Et l’ange prit l’encensoir, le remplit du feu de l’autel, et le jeta sur la terre. Et il y eut des voix, des tonnerres, des éclairs, et un tremblement de terre.
des coups de tonnerre, des éclairs. Ce n’est pas la furie de la nature, mais la tempête de feu déclenchée par la légitime colère d’un Dieu terriblement puissant, colère prête à fondre sur un monde pécheur (#Ap 8:5 ; #Ap 11:19 ; #Ap 16: 18).
un tremblement de terre. Certainement d’une intensité égale ou supérieure à celui du 6e sceau. Il y aura certes eu des tremblements de terre auparavant (#Mt 24: 7), mais celui-ci sera plus important encore: toutes les failles qui se trouvent sur la terre se fractureront simultanément, déclenchant un tremblement de terre mondial, aux proportions cataclysmiques.
6 Et les sept anges qui avaient les sept trompettes se préparèrent à en sonner.
7 ¶ Le premier sonna de la trompette. Et il y eut de la grêle et du feu mêlés de sang, qui furent jetés sur la terre ; et le tiers de la terre fut brûlé, et le tiers des arbres fut brûlé, et toute herbe verte fut brûlée.
de la grêle et du feu mêlés de sang. Peut évoquer des éruptions volcaniques résultant des tremblements de terre décrits au v. 5. Il est tout à fait plausible que la vapeur et l’eau ainsi déversées dans le ciel se condensent et retombent sur terre sous forme de grêle, en même temps que la lave en fusion (cf. #Ex 9:13-25). La poussière et le gaz risquent aussi de contaminer l’eau qui retombera sur la terre, ce qui expliquerait son aspect rouge sang.
le tiers des arbres fut brûlé. L’orage de lave incandescente déclenchera des incendies qui dévasteront le tiers de toutes les forêts.
8 Le second ange sonna de la trompette. Et quelque chose comme une grande montagne embrasée par le feu fut jeté dans la mer ; et le tiers de la mer devint du sang,
comme une grande montagne. Probablement un énorme météore ou un astéroïde enveloppé de gaz qui s’enflammera lors de son entrée dans l’atmosphère terrestre. Son impact sur le sol provoquera une énorme vague de fond qui engloutira le tiers de tous les navires du monde.
le tiers de la mer devint du sang. Cela peut s’interpréter comme un événement connu sous le nom de marées rouges, causées par la présence de millions de micro-organismes rouges polluant l’eau; en l’occurrence, ce sera le résultat de la collision de la terre et du météore. Il se peut aussi qu’il s’agisse de sang véritable, dans un acte évident de jugement eschatologique.
9 et le tiers des créatures qui étaient dans la mer et qui avaient vie mourut, et le tiers des navires périt.
10 Le troisième ange sonna de la trompette. Et il tomba du ciel une grande étoile ardente comme un flambeau ; et elle tomba sur le tiers des fleuves et sur les sources des eaux.
une grande étoile. Autre corps céleste, peut-être une comète, puisqu’il traîne derrière lui une queue embrasée. Il se désintégrera à proximité de notre planète, et les débris voleront aux quatre coins de la terre.
11 Le nom de cette étoile est Absinthe ; et le tiers des eaux fut changé en absinthe, et beaucoup d’hommes moururent par les eaux, parce qu’elles étaient devenues amères.
absinthe. Plante amère dont on tire une liqueur alcoolisée toxique (#De 29:18 ; #Pr 5:4 ; #Jér 9:15 ; #La 3:15).
12 Le quatrième ange sonna de la trompette. Et le tiers du soleil fut frappé, et le tiers de la lune, et le tiers des étoiles, afin que le tiers en fût obscurci, et que le jour perdît un tiers de sa clarté, et la nuit de même.
le tiers du soleil fut frappé. Dieu réduira surnaturellement d’un tiers l’intensité lumineuse des astres. Le manque de soleil provoquera une chute des températures importante, qui aura de graves répercussions sur les cycles météorologiques, botaniques et biologiques (#Lu 21: 25 ; cf. #Ex 10:21-23). Mais cela ne sera que temporaire (cf. #Ap 16:8-9).
13 Je regardai, et j’entendis un aigle qui volait au milieu du ciel, disant d’une voix forte : Malheur, malheur, malheur aux habitants de la terre, à cause des autres sons de la trompette des trois anges qui vont sonner !
Malheur, malheur, malheur. Un « malheur » pour chacune des trompettes restantes. Les effets des quatre premières trompettes sont déjà difficiles à imaginer, mais ce n’est encore rien par rapport aux trois prochains jugements (#Ap 9:1-21 ; #Ap 11:15ss).

1 ¶ When he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.
Seventh Seal. This seal includes not only earthquakes but also the judgments of trumpets (#Ap 8: 1-9: 21; #Ap 11: 15) And those cuts, which themselves result from the 7th trumpet in a succession of faster and faster until the return of Christ (see note on 6: 1 {==> "Rev 6: 1"}).
a silence in heaven. The silence of fear and expectation face the harsh reality that God is about to unleash his punishment on the world.
2 And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.
seven trumpets. In the Apocalypse, the trumpets announce primarily an impending judgment. The intensity of judgments they advertise is larger than for seals, but less destructive than for the sections (cf. #Ap 16: 1-21). They are held for 3½ years, but their individual duration is not specified, except for the fifth trumpet, whose effects are felt during five months (#Ap 9:10). The first four have announced the destruction by God of the Earth's environment, while the last three involve demonic havoc against the inhabitants of the earth (#Ap 9 (8 #Ap vv 6-12.): 1-21; # Rev 11: 15).
3 And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; He was given much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden throne which was before the altar.
censer. Gold container hanging from a rope or chain, used to transport the burning coals of the altar of bronze up to the altar of incense, to ignite the fragrance, symbol of the prayers of the people (#Ap 5: 8 ; #Ex 27: 3; cf. #Lu 1: 8-9). This was done twice daily during sacrifices morning and evening.
4 The smoke of the incense went up with the prayers of the saints from the hand of the angel before God.
5 And the angel took the censer, filled it with fire of the altar, and threw it on the earth. And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings, and an earthquake.
thunder and lightning. This is not the fury of nature but the firestorm triggered by the legitimate anger of a terribly powerful God, ready to pounce on anger a sinful world (#Ap 8: 5; 11:19 #Ap; # Rev 16: 18).
an earthquake. Certainly an intensity equal to or greater than the sixth seal. There will certainly had earthquakes before (#Mt 24: 7), but it will be even more important: all the flaws that are on the earth fractureront simultaneously, triggering a global earthquake land, cataclysmic proportions .
6 And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.
¶ 7 The first sounded. And there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth; and a third of the earth was burnt up, and a third of the trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt.
hail and fire mingled with blood. Can evoke volcanic eruptions resulting earthquakes described in v. 5. It is quite plausible that the steam and water discharged into the sky and is precipitated on earth as hail, together molten lava (see #Ex 9: 13-25) . The dust and gas also contaminate water that fall on the earth, which would explain his blood red appearance.
third of the trees was burned. The storm of glowing lava trigger fires that devastate third of all forests.
8 The second angel blew his trumpet. And something like a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea; and a third of the sea became blood,
like a great mountain. Probably a huge meteor or asteroid wrapped gas that will burn upon entry into Earth's atmosphere. Its impact on the ground will cause a huge tidal wave that will engulf a third of all ships in the world.
the third of the sea became blood. This can be interpreted as an event known as red tides, caused by the presence of millions of red microorganisms pollutant water; in this case, it will be the result of the collision of the earth and of the meteor. It may also be they real blood, in a clear act of eschatological judgment.
9 and a third of the living creatures in the sea and had life, died; and the third of the ships were destroyed.
10 The third angel blew his trumpet. And there fell from heaven a great star, burning like a torch, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers and on the springs of water.
a big star. Other celestial body, possibly a comet, since it drags behind him a burnt tail. It will disintegrate near our planet, and debris will fly to the four corners of the earth.
11 The name of the star is called Wormwood; A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died of the waters because they were made bitter.
absinthe. Bitter plant whose toxic alcoholic liquor is drawn (# of 29:18; #Pr 5: 4; Jer 9:15 #; #The 3:15).
12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet. And the third of the sun was smitten, and the third of the moon and the third of the stars, so that a third of them was darkened, and the day shone third part of it, and the night likewise.
third of the sun was smitten. God supernaturally reduce by one third the brightness of the stars. The lack of sun will cause a significant drop in temperatures, which will have serious impact on weather patterns, botanical and biological (#Lu 21: 25; cf. #Ex 10: 21-23). But this will only be temporary (see #Ap 16: 8-9).
13 I looked, and I heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice: Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound!
Woe, woe, woe. A "misfortune" for each of the remaining trumpets. The effects of the first four trumpets are already difficult to imagine, but this is still nothing compared to the next three judgments (#Ap 9: 1-21; #Ap 11: 15).
