8 ¶ Daniel résolut de ne pas se souiller par les mets du roi et par le vin dont le roi buvait, et il pria le chef des eunuques de ne pas l’obliger à se souiller.
9 Dieu fit trouver à Daniel faveur et grâce devant le chef des eunuques.
10 Le chef des eunuques dit à Daniel: Je crains mon seigneur le roi, qui a fixé ce que vous devez manger et boire ; car pourquoi verrait-il votre visage plus abattu que celui des jeunes gens de votre âge ? Vous exposeriez ma tête auprès du roi.
11 Alors Daniel dit à l’intendant à qui le chef des eunuques avait remis la surveillance de Daniel, de Hanania, de Mischaël et d’Azaria:
12 Eprouve tes serviteurs pendant dix jours, et qu’on nous donne des légumes à manger et de l’eau à boire ;
13 tu regarderas ensuite notre visage et celui des jeunes gens qui mangent les mets du roi, et tu agiras avec tes serviteurs d’après ce que tu auras vu.
14 Il leur accorda ce qu’ils demandaient, et les éprouva pendant dix jours.
15 Au bout de dix jours, ils avaient meilleur visage et plus d’embonpoint que tous les jeunes gens qui mangeaient les mets du roi.
16 L’intendant emportait les mets et le vin qui leur étaient destinés, et il leur donnait des légumes.
17 ¶ Dieu accorda à ces quatre jeunes gens de la science, de l’intelligence dans toutes les lettres, et de la sagesse ; et Daniel expliquait toutes les visions et tous les songes.
18 Au terme fixé par le roi pour qu’on les lui amenât, le chef des eunuques les présenta à Nebucadnetsar.
19 Le roi s’entretint avec eux ; et, parmi tous ces jeunes gens, il ne s’en trouva aucun comme Daniel, Hanania, Mischaël et Azaria. Ils furent donc admis au service du roi.
20 Sur tous les objets qui réclamaient de la sagesse et de l’intelligence, et sur lesquels le roi les interrogeait, il les trouvait dix fois supérieurs à tous les magiciens et astrologues qui étaient dans tout son royaume.
21 Ainsi fut Daniel jusqu’à la première année du roi Cyrus.

Daniel résolut. La nourriture et les boissons païennes étaient dédiées aux idoles. En consommer revenait à s’associer aux honneurs rendus à ces divinités. Daniel « garda son cœur » (cf. #Pr 4:23) et décida de refuser tout compromis qui l’amènerait à se montrer infidèle à l’appel de Dieu (cf. #Ex 34:14-15). Certains aliments consommés par les païens étaient en outre proscrits par Dieu (#Lé 11). Moïse avait adopté la même attitude en s’écartant du mal (#Hé 11:24-26), tout comme le psalmiste (#Ps 119:115), et Jésus ferait de même (#Hé 7:26). Cf. #2Co 6:14-18 ; #2Ti 2:20-21.
1:9 Dieu honora la confiance et la fidélité de Daniel en œuvrant souverainement en sa faveur auprès des autorités païennes. En l’occurrence, il empêcha qu’il soit persécuté et lui permit d’inspirer le respect, alors que, plus tard, il laisserait l’opposition se dresser contre lui, mais en vue de son élévation finale (#Da 6). D’une manière ou d’une autre, Dieu honore ceux qui l’honorent (#1S 2:30 ; #2Ch 16:9).

Utilisation de ce nombre dans un sens qualitatif, probablement pour signifier la plénitude et la complétude: ils démontraient une incroyable compétence dans leurs réponses, supérieure à ceux qui ne bénéficiaient pas de l’aide divine. A comparer avec « dix jours » (vv. #Da 1:12-15), où le sens quantitatif est présent: il s’agit d’une durée réelle.

8 ¶ But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine which he drank , and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself .
9 Now God had brought Daniel into favor and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs .
10 The chief of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink ; for why should he see your faces worse liking than the young men your age? You endanger my head with the king.
11 Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel , Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah :
12 : try your servants for ten days : Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink ;
13 Then playAs our face and the young men who eat the royal food , and you deal with your servants according to what you have seen .
14 He gave them what they asked for , and proved them ten days.
15 At the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the royal food .
16 The steward took away their food and wine meant for them , and gave them vegetables.
¶ 17 God gave these four young men of science , intelligence in all letters and wisdom ; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams .
After 18 set by the king had brought to him , the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar .
19 And the king communed with them; and among all these young people , it was found none like Daniel, Hananiah , Mishael, and Azariah . So they were admitted to the king.
20 And in all matters that demanded wisdom and intelligence, and that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
21 And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.

Daniel resolved . Food and drinks were dedicated to pagan idols. Consume returned to join the honors paid to the gods. Daniel " kept his heart " (cf. # Pr 4:23 ) and decided to reject any compromise that would cause it to show unfaithful to God's call (cf. Ex 34:14-15 # ) . Some foods consumed by the pagans were also prohibited by God (# 11 ) . Moses had adopted the same attitude away from the evil ( # Hey 11:24-26 ) , as the Psalmist ( Ps 119:115 # ) , and Jesus would do the same (# Hey 7:26 ) . See # 2Co 6:14-18 ; # 2Ti 2:20-21 .
1:9 God honored the trust and loyalty of Daniel sovereignly working in his favor with the pagan authorities. In this case, he prevented it persecuted and allowed him to inspire respect , while later he would leave the opposition stand against him, but to its final elevation (# 6 Da ) . One way or another, God honors those who honor Him ( 2:30 # 1S , # 2Ch 16:9).

Using this number in a qualitative sense , probably to signify the fullness and completeness they demonstrated incredible skill in their responses than those who did not receive divine help . Compare with "ten days" (vv. # Da 1:12-15 ), where the quantitative sense is this : it is a real life .

the first year. Cyrus , king of Persia, conquered Babylon in 539 BC. AD the third year of his reign (# Da 10:1) is the last historical date specified by Daniel (cf. # Ezra 1:1-2:1 ) .
