16 Schadrac, Méschac et Abed-Nego répliquèrent au roi Nebucadnetsar : Nous n’avons pas besoin de te répondre là-dessus.
17 Voici, notre Dieu que nous servons peut nous délivrer de la fournaise ardente, et il nous délivrera de ta main, ô roi.
18 Sinon, sache, ô roi, que nous ne servirons pas tes dieux, et que nous n’adorerons pas la statue d’or que tu as élevée.
19 ¶ Sur quoi Nebucadnetsar fut rempli de fureur, et il changea de visage en tournant ses regards contre Schadrac, Méschac et Abed-Nego. Il reprit la parole et ordonna de chauffer la fournaise sept fois plus qu’il ne convenait de la chauffer.
20 Puis il commanda à quelques-uns des plus vigoureux soldats de son armée de lier Schadrac, Méschac et Abed-Nego, et de les jeter dans la fournaise ardente.
21 Ces hommes furent liés avec leurs caleçons, leurs tuniques, leurs manteaux et leurs autres vêtements, et jetés au milieu de la fournaise ardente.
22 Comme l’ordre du roi était sévère, et que la fournaise était extraordinairement chauffée, la flamme tua les hommes qui y avaient jeté Schadrac, Méschac et Abed-Nego.
23 Et ces trois hommes, Schadrac, Méschac et Abed-Nego, tombèrent liés au milieu de la fournaise ardente.

Nous n’avons pas besoin de te répondre. Ces trois hommes n’avaient pas l’intention de se montrer irrespectueux, mais ils n’avaient aucune défense à présenter et aucun besoin de revenir sur leur engagement, puisqu’ils persistaient à croire que leur Dieu était le seul Dieu vrai et vivant. Ils avaient placé leur vie entre ses mains, comme l’indiquent les vv. #Da 3:17-18 (cf. #Esa 43:1-2).

sept fois plus. Rendu furieux par le défi ainsi lancé à son autorité, le roi exigea d’augmenter l’intensité de la chaleur. Il ne demanda pas que le feu soit sept fois plus intense, thermomètre à l’appui, ni qu’on chauffe le feu sept fois plus longtemps ou qu’on y jette sept fois plus de combustible (cf. v. #Da 3:6, « sera jeté à l’instant »). Comme en #Da 1:20 avec le chiffre dix, le chiffre « sept » a ici un sens figuré et exprime la complétude (comme en #Lé 26:18-28 ; #Pr 6:31 ; #Pr 24: 16), le souhait du roi de disposer de la fournaise la plus chaude possible. Cf. « extraordinairement chauffée » (v. #Da 3:22). Un four de brique ou de pierre muni d’un système de tirage variable pouvait devenir plus chaud selon qu’on augmentait la quantité de combustible ou l’arrivée d’air.

16 Shadrach , Meshach, and Abednego answered King Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer thee in this matter .
17 Behold, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace , and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king .
18 If not, know, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, we do not worship the golden image which thou hast set up .
19 ¶ Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and he changed the face by turning his eyes against Shadrach , Meshach, and Abednego . He spoke and ordered the furnace heated seven times more than it was heated.
20 And he commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the fiery furnace .
21 These men were bound in their coats , their tunics, their hats, and their other garments, and cast into the fiery furnace.
22 As the king's commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot , the flame slew those men that took up Shadrach , Meshach, and Abednego .
23 And these three men, Shadrach , Meshach, and Abednego , fell down bound into the midst of the fiery furnace.

We have no need to answer you . These three men had no intention of disrespectful , but they had no defense to make and no need to renege on their commitment , they persisted in believing that their God was the only true and living God . They had placed their life in his hands , as indicated by vv. # Da 3:17-18 (cf. Isaiah 43:1-2 # ) .

seven times . Enraged by the challenge launched its authority , the king demanded to increase the intensity of the heat. He did not ask the fire seven times more intense, thermometer support , nor is heated fire seven times longer or that throws seven times more fuel (cf. v. # 3 Da . : 6, " will be thrown at the moment "). As in # Da 1:20 with the number ten , the number "seven" here has a figurative meaning and expresses completeness (as in Lev 26:18-28 # , # Pr 6:31 ; # Pr 24: 16) the king's wish to have the hottest furnace possible. See "extraordinarily heated " (v. # Da 3:22 ) . A furnace brick or stone with a system of variable print could become hotter depending on whether the increased quantity of fuel or the air .

There were discarded. It was executed by mount some sort of ramp up a place close enough to the top to be able to rush into the furnace (cf. c. # Da 3:26 ) . That day , the fire was such that the king's soldiers were charred .

fell down bound in the middle. A kind of conduit brought the tortured at the bottom of the furnace, just above the fuel.
