10 Voici les visions de mon esprit, pendant que j’étais sur ma couche. Je regardais, et voici, il y avait au milieu de la terre un arbre d’une grande hauteur.
11 Cet arbre était devenu grand et fort, sa cime s’élevait jusqu’aux cieux, et on le voyait des extrémités de toute la terre.
12 Son feuillage était beau, et ses fruits abondants ; il portait de la nourriture pour tous ; les bêtes des champs s’abritaient sous son ombre, les oiseaux du ciel faisaient leur demeure parmi ses branches, et tout être vivant tirait de lui sa nourriture.
13 Dans les visions de mon esprit, que j’avais sur ma couche, je regardais, et voici, un de ceux qui veillent et qui sont saints descendit des cieux.
14 Il cria avec force et parla ainsi : Abattez l’arbre, et coupez ses branches ; secouez le feuillage, et dispersez les fruits ; que les bêtes fuient de dessous, et les oiseaux du milieu de ses branches !
15 Mais laissez en terre le tronc où se trouvent les racines, et liez-le avec des chaînes de fer et d’airain, parmi l’herbe des champs. Qu’il soit trempé de la rosée du ciel, et qu’il ait, comme les bêtes, l’herbe de la terre pour partage.
16 Son cœur d’homme lui sera ôté, et un cœur de bête lui sera donné ; et sept temps passeront sur lui.

un arbre. Symbole de Nebucadnetsar après 605 av. J.-C. (cf. vv. #Da 4:20-22). Les créatures du v. 12 représentent ses sujets (v. #Da 4:22), et la chute de l’arbre le jugement qui devait s’abattre sur lui (cf. vv. #Da 4:23-25).
4:13
un de ceux qui veillent et qui sont saints. C’était un ange (cf. v. #Da 4:23) au service de Dieu, chargé de contrôler la montée en puissance ou la chute d’une nation (cf. #Da 10:13). Les anges ont souvent pour tâche d’exercer les jugements de Dieu (voir #Ge 18 ; #Esa 37 ; #Ap 16).
4:15
tronc. La base (le noyau) du royaume, toujours vivant au v. 26 (comme en #Esa 6:13), se développerait plus tard, comme c’est le cas dans la nature (#Job 14:7-9). Les « chaînes » correspondaient à la garantie que Dieu garderait le reste intact et préserverait l’autorité du roi (v. #Da 4:26).
4:16
cœur de bête. Il s’agit d’une forme quelconque de la maladie appelée lycanthropie. Le malade pense être un animal et vit à l’état sauvage, se nourrissant d’herbe et adoptant un comportement non humain: aspect repoussant, cheveux en broussailles, ongles longs et mal entretenus.
sept temps. Cf. aussi vv. 23, 25, 32. Il faut probablement y voir des années plutôt que des mois, comme au v. #Da 4:29. En #Da 7:25, Daniel utilise sans ambiguïté le même terme dans le sens d’« années ».

10 Thus were the visions of my head while I was on my bed . I looked, and behold, there was the middle of the earth a tree from a great height .
11 The tree grew, and was strong, and its top reached to heaven , and the sight of the ends of the earth.
12 Its leaves were beautiful and its fruit ; it was food for all; the beasts of the field had shadow under it , the birds of the sky dwelt in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it .
13 In the visions of my mind, I had on my bed , I looked , and behold, a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven .
14 He cried aloud and said thus, Hew down the tree and cut off its branches ; shake the leaves, and scatter its fruit ; the beasts flee from under it and the birds from its branches!
15 But let in the ground the trunk where the roots, and bound with chains of iron and brass , in the tender grass of the field. Let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and he , like the beasts in the grass of the earth to share.
16 The heart of man shall be taken away , and a beast's heart be given to him ; and seven times shall pass over him.

a tree. Symbol of Nebuchadnezzar after 605 BC. BC ( cf. vv. # Da 4:20-22 ) . Creatures of v . 12 represent his subjects (v. # Da 4:22 ) , and the fall of the tree the judgment that was to befall him (cf. vv. # Da 4:23-25 ) .

a watcher and a holy one . She was an angel (cf. c. # Da 4:23 ) in God's service , responsible for controlling the rise or fall of a nation (cf. # Da 10:13) . Angels often have the task to carry God's judgments (see # Ge 18; Esa # 37 , # Rev 16).
4:15
trunk. The base ( the kernel) of the kingdom, still alive at v . 26 ( as in # Esa 6:13 ) , to later develop , as is the case in nature ( Job # 14:7-9 ) . The "chains" were consistent with the guarantee that God would keep the rest intact and preserve the authority of the king (v. # Da 4:26 ) .
4:16
heart of beast. It is some form of the disease called lycanthropy . The patient believed to be an animal lives in the wild , feeding on grass and adopting a non-human behavior : repulsive , hair brush, long nails and poorly maintained.
seven times . See also vv. 23, 25, 32. Should probably see for years rather than months , as in ver. # Da 4:29 . In # Da 7:25 , Daniel uses the same unambiguous term in the sense of " years."
