1 ¶ Si tu obéis à la voix de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, en observant et en mettant en pratique tous ses commandements que je te prescris aujourd’hui, l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te donnera la supériorité sur toutes les nations de la terre.
supériorité sur toutes les nations. Si Israël obéissait à l’Éternel, il recevrait pour bénédiction suprême la prééminence sur tous les peuples (voir #De 26:19). Il fallait pour cela expérimenter le salut, un salut débouchant sur l’obéissance à l’Éternel par l’observation de ses commandements. À mon sens, cette bénédiction ne deviendra finalement réalité que lors du millénium, où le roi d’Israël, le Messie, et sa nation seront exaltés (cf. #Za 13:1-14:21 ; #Ro 11:25-27).
28:1-2
Si tu obéis à la voix de l’Éternel, ton Dieu. Une totale obéissance était exigée d’Israël. Il était impossible au peuple de gagner par son mérite la bonté et la bénédiction divines, mais un désir constant d’obéir à Dieu, de l’adorer et d’entretenir une relation juste avec lui prouvait la sincérité de sa foi et de son amour pour lui (cf. #De 6:5). C’était aussi la preuve de l’œuvre de grâce opérée par Dieu dans les cœurs.

28:1-68 Lors de la conclusion de l’alliance au Sinaï (#Ex 23:20-33), jouant son rôle de chef et de médiateur, Moïse avait déjà fait connaître au peuple la promesse de bénédiction de Dieu et l’avait averti de ne pas se tourner vers d’autres dieux. Après la rébellion des Israélites, il les avait avertis (#Lé 26) du jugement divin qu’ils subiraient en cas de désobéissance. Ici, il leur adresse une exhortation en se basant sur les bénédictions et les malédictions de l’alliance (voir #Lé 26:1-45). L’énoncé des bénédictions et des malédictions suit une structure similaire dans ce chapitre:
1° Moïse explique clairement que la qualité de vie des Israélites en Canaan dépendra de leur obéissance, ou non, à Dieu (#De 28:1-2, #De 28:15);
2° il énumère les diverses bénédictions et malédictions (#De 28:3-6, #De 28:16-19);
3° il développe une sorte de sermon sur cette base (#De 28:7-14, #De 28:20-68). Tout comme elles occupaient une place importante dans la cérémonie de 27:11-26, les malédictions sont aussi beaucoup plus développées ici. Dans l’optique de Moïse, il était clair qu’Israël ne se montrerait pas fidèle à l’alliance (#De 31:16-18, #De 31:27) et, ainsi, ne jouirait pas des bénédictions de l’alliance; par conséquent, les malédictions devaient recevoir plus d’attention.
2 Voici toutes les bénédictions qui se répandront sur toi et qui seront ton partage, lorsque tu obéiras à la voix de l’Éternel, ton Dieu:
3 Tu seras béni dans la ville, et tu seras béni dans les champs.
28:3-6
béni. Ces béatitudes résument les divers domaines de la vie touchés par la bénédiction. Dieu, dans sa grâce, voulait accompagner tous leurs efforts (voir #De 28:7-14), à condition qu’ils obéissent (versets #De 28:1-2, #De 28:9, #De 28:13-14). Ils connaîtraient la victoire, la prospérité, la pureté, le respect, l’abondance et la domination, c’est-à-dire une pleine bénédiction.
4 Le fruit de tes entrailles, le fruit de ton sol, le fruit de tes troupeaux, les portées de ton gros et de ton menu bétail, toutes ces choses seront bénies.
5 Ta corbeille et ta huche seront bénies.
6 Tu seras béni à ton arrivée, et tu seras béni à ton départ.
arrivée … départ. C’était une expression idiomatique pour renvoyer aux activités normales de la vie quotidienne (cf. #De 31:2). Elle conclut de façon appropriée à la fois les bénédictions et les malédictions (verset #De 28:19), puisqu’elle résume tout.
7 L’Éternel te donnera la victoire sur tes ennemis qui s’élèveront contre toi ; ils sortiront contre toi par un seul chemin, et ils s’enfuiront devant toi par sept chemins.
8 L’Éternel ordonnera à la bénédiction d’être avec toi dans tes greniers et dans toutes tes entreprises. Il te bénira dans le pays que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne.
9 Tu seras pour l’Éternel un peuple saint, comme il te l’a juré, lorsque tu observeras les commandements de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, et que tu marcheras dans ses voies.
10 Tous les peuples verront que tu es appelé du nom de l’Éternel, et ils te craindront.
appelé du nom de l’Éternel. L’obéissance et la bénédiction d’Israël avaient de quoi susciter la crainte parmi tous les peuples de la terre lorsqu’ils prendraient conscience que cette nation était vraiment le peuple de Dieu. L’Éternel avait depuis toujours cet objectif en vue pour eux; il voulait que son peuple soit un témoin du Dieu vivant et vrai auprès des nations et les amène ainsi à abandonner leurs idoles. Cette fonction de peuple témoin sera particulièrement évidente dans les derniers jours (voir #Ap 7:4-10 ; #Ap 14: 1) et dans le royaume (cf. #Za 8:1-12).
11 L’Éternel te comblera de biens, en multipliant le fruit de tes entrailles, le fruit de tes troupeaux et le fruit de ton sol, dans le pays que l’Éternel a juré à tes pères de te donner.
12 L’Éternel t’ouvrira son bon trésor, le ciel, pour envoyer à ton pays la pluie en son temps et pour bénir tout le travail de tes mains ; tu prêteras à beaucoup de nations, et tu n’emprunteras point.
13 L’Éternel fera de toi la tête et non la queue, tu seras toujours en haut et tu ne seras jamais en bas, lorsque tu obéiras aux commandements de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, que je te prescris aujourd’hui, lorsque tu les observeras et les mettras en pratique,
la tête et non la queue. Israël devait être le chef des autres nations (« la tête ») et ne devait pas être soumis à d’autres (« la queue »).
14 et que tu ne te détourneras ni à droite ni à gauche de tous les commandements que je vous donne aujourd’hui, pour aller après d’autres dieux et pour les servir.
15 ¶ Mais si tu n’obéis point à la voix de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, si tu n’observes pas et ne mets pas en pratique tous ses commandements et toutes ses lois que je te prescris aujourd’hui, voici toutes les malédictions qui viendront sur toi et qui seront ton partage:
28:15-68 Dieu avertit son peuple des conséquences de son manque d’amour pour lui et de sa désobéissance: une telle attitude serait sanctionnée par des malédictions.

Moïse était conscient du penchant des Israélites à l’infidélité envers Dieu; c’est pourquoi il les avertit avec force détails des conséquences désastreuses de ce comportement: perte de leur pays et de leur lieu d’adoration. La destruction représentait la calamité suprême dans les sanctions du péché d’Israël (versets #De 28:20-21, #De 28:24, #De 28:45, #De 28:48, #De 28:51, #De 28:61, #De 28:63).
21 L’Éternel attachera à toi la peste, jusqu’à ce qu’elle te consume dans le pays dont tu vas entrer en possession.

airain … fer. Les cieux seraient aussi éclatants que de l’airain et aucune pluie ne tomberait pour abreuver la terre. Celle-ci deviendrait aussi dure que du fer, et l’eau coulerait dessus sans la pénétrer (cf. #Am 4:7).
24 L’Éternel enverra pour pluie à ton pays de la poussière et de la poudre ; il en descendra du ciel sur toi jusqu’à ce que tu sois détruit.
25 L’Éternel te fera battre par tes ennemis ; tu sortiras contre eux par un seul chemin, et tu t’enfuiras devant eux par sept chemins ; et tu seras un objet d’effroi pour tous les royaumes de la terre.

28 L’Éternel te frappera de délire, d’aveuglement, d’égarement d’esprit,
29 et tu tâtonneras en plein midi comme l’aveugle dans l’obscurité, tu n’auras point de succès dans tes entreprises, et tu seras tous les jours opprimé, dépouillé, et il n’y aura personne pour venir à ton secours.
30 Tu auras une fiancée, et un autre homme couchera avec elle ; tu bâtiras une maison, et tu ne l’habiteras pas ; tu planteras une vigne, et tu n’en jouiras pas.
Ces trois malédictions forment un contraste avec les exemptions du service militaire accordées en #De 20:5-7. Ces exemptions n’étaient possibles que si Dieu lui-même accordait la victoire à son peuple. Mais si les siens désobéissaient, il ne combattrait plus pour eux. Celui qui aurait dû être exempté serait alors contraint de se battre et trouverait la mort au combat; sa jeune épouse serait violée, et sa maison et ses vignes prises par les envahisseurs (cf. #Jér 8:10 ; #Am 5:11 ; #Sop 1:13).
31 Ton bœuf sera égorgé sous tes yeux, et tu n’en mangeras pas ; ton âne sera enlevé devant toi, et on ne te le rendra pas ; tes brebis seront données à tes ennemis, et il n’y aura personne pour venir à ton secours.
32 Tes fils et tes filles seront livrés à un autre peuple, tes yeux le verront et languiront tout le jour après eux, et ta main sera sans force.

35 L’Éternel te frappera aux genoux et aux cuisses d’un ulcère malin dont tu ne pourras guérir, il te frappera depuis la plante du pied jusqu’au sommet de la tête.
plante du pied … tête. Les maladies cutanées attaqueraient le peuple maudit par Dieu. La maladie mentionnée ici est la même que celle dont Job souffrit (cf. #Job 2:7).
36 L’Éternel te fera marcher, toi et ton roi que tu auras établi sur toi, vers une nation que tu n’auras point connue, ni toi ni tes pères. Et là, tu serviras d’autres dieux, du bois et de la pierre.
ton roi que tu auras établi sur toi. Même s’ils n’avaient pas de roi à leur entrée en Canaan, Moïse prédit que les Israélites en auraient un au moment de la réalisation de cette malédiction et qu’il serait emmené en exil avec eux.
une nation. Les Israélites seraient emmenés vers une nation autre que l’Égypte qui serait imprégnée d’idolâtrie (cf. #2R 17: 41 ; #Jér 16: 13).
37 Et tu seras un sujet d’étonnement, de sarcasme et de raillerie, parmi tous les peuples chez qui l’Éternel te mènera.

45 ¶ Toutes ces malédictions viendront sur toi, elles te poursuivront et seront ton partage jusqu’à ce que tu sois détruit, parce que tu n’auras pas obéi à la voix de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, parce que tu n’auras pas observé ses commandements et ses lois qu’il te prescrit.
46 Elles seront à jamais pour toi et pour tes descendants comme des signes et des prodiges.

48 tu serviras, au milieu de la faim, de la soif, de la nudité et de la disette de toutes choses, tes ennemis que l’Éternel enverra contre toi. Il mettra un joug de fer sur ton cou, jusqu’à ce qu’il t’ait détruit.
49 L’Éternel fera partir de loin, des extrémités de la terre, une nation qui fondra sur toi d’un vol d’aigle, une nation dont tu n’entendras point la langue,
des extrémités de la terre, une nation. Dieu susciterait une nation qui lui servirait d’instrument de jugement contre son peuple ingrat. Venue de très loin, elle deviendrait rapidement puissante et détruirait complètement le pays. Cette prédiction se réalisa effectivement plus tard, d’abord avec l’Assyrie (#Esa 5:26 ; #Esa 7:18-20 ; #Esa 28:11 ; #Esa 37:18 ; #Os 8:1), puis avec Babylone (#Jér 5:15 ; #La 4:19 ; #Ez 17: 3 ; #Ha 1:6-8).
50 une nation au visage farouche, et qui n’aura ni respect pour le vieillard ni pitié pour l’enfant.

ce nom glorieux et redoutable de l’Éternel, ton Dieu. L’obéissance d’Israël à la loi (c’est-à-dire à l’alliance sinaïtique) devait l’amener à craindre l’Éternel. Le « nom » représentait la présence et le caractère; celui de l’Éternel (Yahvé) révélait la gloire et la grandeur divines (voir #Ex 3:15). Il est significatif que l’expression « l’Éternel, votre (ou ton) Dieu » soit utilisée près de 280 fois dans le Deutéronome. La malédiction divine atteindrait les Israélites dans toute sa mesure lorsque ceux-ci se seraient endurcis dans la désobéissance au point de mépriser le caractère glorieux et redoutable de leur Dieu. Aux versets 15 et 45, Moïse a décrit les malédictions sanctionnant la désobéissance; la pire d’entre elles frapperait lorsque l’endurcissement serait tel que le peuple ne craindrait même plus Dieu. Seule la grâce de Dieu sauverait un petit reste (verset #De 28:62), évitant ainsi l’extermination totale d’Israël (cf. #Mal 2:2). Contrairement à la promesse faite en #Ge 15: 5, sous la malédiction divine la postérité d’Abraham diminuerait; de même qu’il avait multiplié la descendance des patriarches en Égypte (cf. #Ex 1:7), de même il la décimerait pour la rendre insignifiante, et ce jusqu’au jour où il restaurerait la nation (cf. #De 30:5).
59 l’Éternel te frappera miraculeusement, toi et ta postérité, par des plaies grandes et de longue durée, par des maladies graves et opiniâtres.

le livre de cette loi. Il est question ici d’un document écrit particulier. Il ne s’agit pas seulement du Deutéronome (cf. #De 31:9), mais de tout ce qui était déjà rédigé du Pentateuque. La comparaison des versets 60 et 61 suggère que les plaies d’Égypte étaient relatées dans le « livre de cette loi », et c’est le cas dans l’Exode.
62 Après avoir été aussi nombreux que les étoiles du ciel, vous ne resterez qu’un petit nombre, parce que tu n’auras point obéi à la voix de l’Éternel, ton Dieu.
63 De même que l’Éternel prenait plaisir à vous faire du bien et à vous multiplier, de même l’Éternel prendra plaisir à vous faire périr et à vous détruire ; et vous serez arrachés du pays dont tu vas entrer en possession.

L’Éternel te dispersera. Les Juifs encore en vie après l’accomplissement des malédictions seraient finalement dispersés par l’Éternel pour servir les faux dieux. Ils vivraient sans repos et dans la peur parmi les diverses nations de la terre (cf. #Né 1:8-9 ; #Jér 30:11 ; #Ez 11:16). Cette dispersion commença avec la déportation du royaume du nord, Israël (722 av. J.-C.), puis du royaume du sud, Juda (586 av. J.-C.), et elle est encore une réalité aujourd’hui. Dans le royaume terrestre à venir du Messie, Israël expérimentera son rassemblement dans la foi, le salut et la justice. Voir #Esa 59:19-21 ; #Jér 31:31-34 ; #Ez 36:8-37:14 ; #Za 12:10-14:21. Le caractère insupportable de la condition d’Israël est souligné par les aspirations du peuple à y échapper (verset #De 28:67). Cf. #Jér 44:7 ; #Os 8:13 ; #Os 9:3 ; #Os 11:4-5.
65 Parmi ces nations, tu ne seras pas tranquille, et tu n’auras pas un lieu de repos pour la plante de tes pieds. L’Éternel rendra ton cœur agité, tes yeux languissants, ton âme souffrante.
66 Ta vie sera comme en suspens devant toi, tu trembleras la nuit et le jour, tu douteras de ton existence.
67 Dans l’effroi qui remplira ton cœur et en présence de ce que tes yeux verront, tu diras le matin : Puisse le soir être là ! et tu diras le soir : Puisse le matin être là !
68 Et l’Éternel te ramènera sur des navires en Égypte, et tu feras ce chemin dont je t’avais dit : Tu ne le reverras plus ! Là, vous vous offrirez en vente à vos ennemis, comme esclaves et comme servantes ; et il n’y aura personne pour vous acheter.
personne pour vous acheter. L’abandon de son peuple par Dieu serait si terrible qu’il ne pourrait même pas se vendre comme esclave. La malédiction divine conduirait Israël dans une situation apparemment désespérée (cf. #Os 8:13 ; #Os 9:3). L’Égypte pourrait symboliser ici tous les pays où les Juifs seraient asservis ou vendus comme esclaves. Il faut reconnaître que cette prophétie s’est effectivement accomplie après la destruction de Jérusalem en l’an 70 de notre ère, destruction qui représentait le jugement de l’apostasie d’Israël et de son rejet du Messie. Le général romain Titus, celui qui conquit Jérusalem et Israël, envoya 17 000 Juifs adultes en Égypte pour y accomplir un dur labeur et fit vendre publiquement ceux qui avaient moins de 17 ans. Sous l’empereur romain Hadrien, d’innombrables Juifs furent aussi vendus comme esclaves et subirent toutes sortes de cruautés.
DEUTERONOMY 28 : 1 to 68 + NOTES TO JOHN MACARTHUR
1 ¶ If you obey the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments which I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of Earth.
high above all the nations. If Israel obeyed the Lord, he would receive for the rule supreme blessing on all nations (see # of 26:19). This required experience salvation, a salvation leading to obedience to the Lord by observing his commandments. To me, that blessing will eventually become a reality only at the millennium, when the king of Israel, the Messiah, and his nation will be exalted (cf. #Za 13: 1-14: 21; #Ro 11: 25-27 ).

If you obey the voice of the LORD thy God. Total obedience was required of Israel. It was impossible for the people to earn merit by the divine goodness and blessing, but a constant desire to obey God, to worship and maintain a right relationship with him proved the sincerity of his faith and his love for him (see # of 6: 5). It was also the evidence of the work of grace performed by God in the heart.

28: 1-68 At the conclusion of the covenant at Sinai (#Ex 23: 20-33), playing the role of leader and mediator, Moses had already made known to the people the promise of blessing of God and the warned not to turn to other gods. After the rebellion of the Israelites, he warned them (Lev # 26) of divine judgment they would suffer for disobedience. Here, he addresses them exhortation based on the blessings and curses of the covenant (see # Lev 26: 1-45). The statement of blessings and curses follows a similar structure in this chapter:
1 Moses makes clear that the quality of life of the Israelites in Canaan depend on their obedience or not to God (# of 28: 1-2, # of 28:15);
2 enumerates the various blessings and curses (28 # of: 3-6, # of 28: 16-19);
3. it develops a kind of sermon on this basis (# of 28: 7-14 # of 28: 20-68). As they occupied an important place in the ceremony 27: 11-26, curses are also much more developed here. In view of Moses, it was clear that Israel would not show true to the covenant (31 # of: 16-18, # of 31:27) and thus does not enjoy the blessings of the covenant ; therefore, curses were to receive more attention.
2 And all these blessings shall come on thee, and will thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God:
3 Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.
28: 3-6
blessed. These Beatitudes summarize the various areas of life affected by the blessing. God, in his grace, would accompany all their efforts (see # of 28: 7-14), provided they obey (# of verses 28: 1-2, # of 28: 9, 28 # of: 13- 14). They would know the victory, prosperity, purity, respect, abundance and dominance, that is to say, a full blessing.
4 The fruit of your womb, the fruit of your ground, the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy herds and thy flocks, all these things will be blessed.
5 Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.
6 Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.
Arrival departure. It was an idiom to return to normal activities of daily living (see # of 31: 2). It concludes appropriately both blessings and curses (# of verse 28:19), as it says it all.
7 The Lord will give you victory over your enemies who rise up against you; they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways.
8 The LORD shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all your undertakings. He will bless you in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
9 You shall be to the Lord a holy people, as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in his ways.
10 All peoples shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD, and they will fear you.
called the name of the LORD. The obedience and blessing of Israel had enough instill fear among all the peoples of the earth when they take conscience that this nation was truly God's people. The Lord had always been this objective in mind for them; he wanted his people to be a witness to the living and true God to the nations and thus causes them to abandon their idols. This function will witness people particularly evident in the last days (see #Ap 7: 4-10; #Ap 14: 1) and the kingdom (cf. #Za 8: 1-12).
11 The LORD shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy cattle and the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you.
12 The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain of your land in its season and to bless all the work of thy hands; you will lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.
13 The LORD will make you the head and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you today when you observe and to put into practice,
the head and not the tail. Israel was to be the leader of other nations ( "head") and should not be subjected to other ( "tail").
14 and you shall not turn aside to the right or left of all the commandments that I give you today, to go after other gods to serve them.
15 ¶ But if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, if you do not observe and do not carefully follow all his commandments and his statutes which I command you today, that all these curses shall come upon thee and be thy share:
28: 15-68 God warned his people of the consequences of lack of love for him and for his disobedience: such an attitude would be sanctioned by curses.

16 Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field.
28: 16-19 These formulations are parallel to the blessings of verses 3-6.
17 Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed.
18 The fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy herds and of thy flocks; all shall be cursed.
19 You will be cursed when you come in, and cursed shalt thou go out.
20 The LORD shall send against thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all companies you do, until thou be destroyed, until thou perish quickly; because of the evil of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken me.
until you perish. Moses was aware of the tendency of the Israelites to trespass against God; that is why he warns in great detail the disastrous consequences of this behavior: loss of their country and their place of worship. The destruction was the supreme calamity in sanctions of Israel's sin (# of verses 28: 20-21, # of 28:24, # of 28:45, # of 28:48, # of 28:51, # of 28:61, # of 28:63).
21 The LORD pestilence cleave unto thee, until he have consumed thee in the land you are entering to possess.

22 The LORD will smite thee with consumption, fever, inflammation, fiery heat, dryness, jaundice and gangrene, which pursue you until you perish.

23 The sky over your head shall be brass, and the earth under you iron.
bronze ... iron. The heavens are as vivid as brass and no rain would fall to water the earth. It would become as hard as iron, and the water would flow over without penetrating (cf. #AM 4: 7).
24 The LORD shall make the rain of thy land dust and powder; it come down from heaven upon thee, until thou be destroyed.
25 The LORD will make you beat your enemies; you go out against them one way, and flee before them seven ways and you shall be a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.

26 And thy carcase shall be food to all birds of the sky and the beasts of the earth; and none shall make them afraid.

27 The LORD will smite thee with the botch of Egypt, hemorrhoids, scabies and ringworm, which you can not be healed.
ulcer of Egypt. God inflicted this disease to the Egyptians before the Exodus (cf. #Ex 9: 9; #AM 4:10).
28 The LORD will smite thee with madness, blindness, and astonishment of heart,
29 And thou shalt grope at noonday, as the blind gropes in darkness, and thou shalt not prosper in your ways, and thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled evermore, and no man shall save thee.
30 You will have a bride, and another man shall lie with her; thou shalt build a house, and you will not live; you plant a vineyard, and you do not will enjoy.
These three curses are a contrast to the exemptions from military service granted #of 20: 5-7. These exemptions were possible only if God himself gave the victory to his people. But if his disobeyed, he would fight no more for them. The one who should have been exempted would be forced to fight and find death in battle; his young wife would be raped and his house and vineyards taken by the invaders (see # Jer 8:10; #AM 5:11; #Sop 1:13).
31 Thine ox shall be slain before your eyes, and you shall not eat; Your donkey will be taken away before you, and we will not make you; thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and there shall be none to help thee.
32 Your son and your daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look and fail with longing for them all the day, and thy hand shall be without force.

33 A people that you have no known shall eat the fruit of thy ground, and all thy labors, and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed days.
34 The show that you have under the eyes throw you into delirium.
35 The LORD shall smite thee in the knees and the legs, with a sore botch that can not be healed, it will strike you from the foot to the top of the head.
Sole ... head. Skin diseases attack the people cursed by God. The disease mentioned here is the same as that which Job suffered (see #Job 2: 7).
36 The LORD shall bring thee, and thy king which thou shalt set over thee, unto a nation that thou hast not known, thou nor thy fathers. And there you shall serve other gods, wood and stone.
your king whom you shall set over you. Although they had no king to their entry into Canaan, Moses predicted that Israel would have a moment in the realization of this curse and would be taken into exile with them.
a nation. The Israelites would be taken to a nation other than Egypt, which would be impregnated with idolatry (cf. 2R # 17: 41; # Jer 16: 13).
37 And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb and a byword among all the peoples where the LORD will lead you.

38 Thou shalt carry much seed field; and thou shalt gather little, because the locust shall consume.

42 The locust possess all your trees and the fruit of thy ground.
43 The stranger that is within thee shall get up above thee, and thou shalt come down very low;

45 ¶ And all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue them you your share until you are destroyed, because you will not obey the voice of the Lord thy God, because you will have not keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee.
46 They will be forever for you and for your descendants as signs and wonders.

47 For not having, amidst the abundance of all things, serve the LORD your God with joy and good heart,
48 thou shalt be in the midst of hunger, thirst, nakedness, and in want of all things, your enemies that the LORD will send against you. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you.
49 The Lord will go far ends of the earth, a nation against you from the eagle flies, a nation which thou shalt not understand the language,
the ends of the earth, a nation. God would raise up a nation that would serve as an instrument of judgment against his ungrateful people. Coming from far away, it would quickly become powerful and completely destroy the country. This prediction was actually realized later, first with Assyria (#Esa 5:26; #Esa 7: 18-20; 28:11 #Esa; #Esa 37:18; #Os 8: 1), then with Babylon (# Jer 5:15; #The 4:19; #Ez 17: 3; #Ha 1: 6-8).
50 a nation of fierce countenance, that shall not respect the old, nor pity for the child.

51 And he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle and the fruit of thy ground, until thou be destroyed; it does leave you grain, wine, or oil, or the increase of your herds and your flocks, until they have caused you to perish.
52 And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy walls come down, high and fortified walls wherein thou put thy trust in all your land; shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

28: 52-57 A nation would eventually invade and lay siege to all the cities of Judah. # Of verses 28: 53-57, Moses describes a particularly disgusting and incomprehensible reaction of the besieged Jews: the resort to cannibalism (cf. 2R # 6: 28-29; #The 2:20; #The 4:10).
53 In the midst of the anguish and distress wherewith thine enemy, thou shalt eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of thy son and thy daughters which the LORD thy God hath given thee.

57 it will give nothing to the afterbirth came out from between her feet and the children she will bear, for want of all things, she shall eat secretly in the siege and distress wherewith thine enemy in thy gates.
58 If you do not observe and do not carefully follow all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and fearful name of the LORD thy God
28: 58-63
this glorious and fearful name of the LORD thy God. Israel's obedience to the law (that is to say, the Sinai covenant) would bring him to fear the Lord. The "name" represents the presence and character; that of the Lord (Yahweh) revealed the divine glory and greatness (see #Ex 3:15). It is significant that "the Lord your (or your) God" is used about 280 times in Deuteronomy. God curse the Israelites would reach into its own when they would have hardened in disobedience to the point of despising the glorious and fearful character of their God. In verses 15 and 45, Moses describes the curses punishing disobedience; the worst of them hit when the hardness would be such that the people would not fear even God. Only the grace of God would save a small remnant (# of verse 28:62), thus avoiding the total extermination of Israel (cf. #Mal 2: 2). Contrary to the promise made in #Ge 15: 5, under the divine curse Abraham's seed would decrease; as he had multiplied the progeny of the Patriarchs in Egypt (cf. #Ex 1: 7), and it would decimate the insignificant to make it, and until he would restore the nation (see # of 30 : 5).
59 Jehovah thy plagues wonderful, thou and thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore diseases.

60 He will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which you were afraid; and they shall cleave unto thee.
61 Also the LORD will come upon thee, until thou be destroyed, all kinds of diseases and plagues that are written in the book of this law.
the book of this law. This is about a particular paper wrote. It is not only Deuteronomy (see # of 31: 9), but everything was already written the Pentateuch. The comparison of verses 60 and 61 suggests that the plagues of Egypt were reported in the "book of this law," and so in Exodus.
62 Having been as numerous as the stars of heaven, you shall be left few in number, because you hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God.
63 Just as the LORD took delight in doing you good and multiply you, so the Lord will take pleasure in you perish and destroy you; and you will be uprooted from the land you are entering to possess.

64 The LORD will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other; and there you shall serve other gods, which neither you had known nor your fathers, even wood and stone.
The Lord will scatter you. The Jews still alive after the completion of curses would eventually dispersed by the Lord to serve false gods. They would live restless and fear among the various nations of the earth (cf. Born # 1: 8-9; Jer 30:11 #; #Ez 11:16). This dispersion began with the deportation of the northern kingdom, Israel (722 BC.), And the southern kingdom of Judah (586 BC.), And it is still a reality today . In the earthly kingdom of the Messiah to come, Israel will test its rally in faith, salvation and justice. See #Esa 59: 19-21; # Jer 31: 31-34; #Ez 36: 8-37: 14; #Za 12: 10-14: 21. The unbearable nature of the condition of Israel is underlined by the aspirations of the people to escape (# of verse 28:67). See # Jer 44: 7; #Os 8:13; #Os 9: 3; #Os 11: 4-5.
65 Among these nations you shall find no ease, and you will not have a place to rest for the sole of your foot. The LORD will make your heart agitated, failing of eyes and sorrow of mind.
66 Your life shall hang before thee, and thou shalt fear night and day, you assurance of thy life.
67 In the terror that will fill your heart and in the presence of what your eyes see, you say in the morning: May the night be there! and say the evening: May the morning!
68 And the LORD will bring you back in ships to Egypt, and thou shalt way whereof I told you: You never see it again! There you shall sell yourselves to your enemies as slaves and handmaids; and none shall buy you.
buy you. The abandonment of the people of God would be so terrible that he could not even be sold as a slave. The curse of God would lead Israel into a seemingly hopeless situation (cf. #Os 8:13; #Os 9: 3). Egypt could symbolize here all countries where Jews were enslaved or sold as slaves. Admittedly, this prophecy has actually accomplished after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD destruction that represented the judgment of the apostasy of Israel and his rejection of the Messiah. The Roman general Titus, who conquered Jerusalem and Israel sent 17,000 Jews adults to Egypt to perform hard labor and made publicly sell those under 17 years. Under the Roman Emperor Hadrian, countless Jews were also sold as slaves and suffered all kinds of cruelties.
