1 ¶ Lorsque toutes ces choses t’arriveront, la bénédiction et la malédiction que je mets devant toi, si tu les prends à cœur au milieu de toutes les nations chez lesquelles l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’aura chassé,
tu les prends à cœur. Moïse passa au temps où les malédictions céderaient la place aux bénédictions. Le peuple reconnaîtrait alors que les difficultés traversées étaient la conséquence directe de sa désobéissance et se tournerait dans une attitude de repentance vers l’Éternel. Cette repentance le conduirait à un engagement sincère d’obéissance aux commandements divins (verset #De 30:8) et marquerait la fin de ses malheurs (verset #De 30:3). Il s’agit donc ici du salut final d’Israël par la foi en Christ, annoncé aussi par Esaïe (#Esa 54:4-8), Jérémie (#Jér 31:31-34 ; #Jér 32:37-42), Ézéchiel (#Ez 36:23-38), Osée (#Os 14:1-9), Joël (#Joe 3:16-21), Amos (#Am 9:11-15), Sophonie (#Sop 3:14-20), Zacharie (#Za 12:10-13:9), Malachie (#Mal 3:16-4:4) et Paul (#Ro 11:25-27).
30:1-10 Le rejet de Dieu par Israël et celui d’Israël par Dieu ainsi que la dispersion qui s’ensuivrait ne marqueraient pas la fin de l’histoire du peuple de Dieu. Après avoir prédit un temps où la désobéissance d’Israël provoquerait sa déportation, Moïse annonça, pour des jours encore plus lointains, la restauration et la rédemption d’Israël (cf. #Lé 26:40-45) sous la nouvelle alliance.
2 si tu reviens à l’Éternel, ton Dieu, et si tu obéis à sa voix de tout ton cœur et de toute ton âme, toi et tes enfants, selon tout ce que je te prescris aujourd’hui,
3 alors l’Éternel, ton Dieu, ramènera tes captifs et aura compassion de toi, il te rassemblera encore du milieu de tous les peuples chez lesquels l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’aura dispersé.
4 Quand tu serais exilé à l’autre extrémité du ciel, l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te rassemblera de là, et c’est là qu’il t’ira chercher.
30:4-5 Le rassemblement des Juifs en provenance de tous les pays du monde suivra la rédemption finale d’Israël. La restauration du pays sera l’accomplissement de la promesse faite à Abraham (cf. #Ge 12:7 ; #Ge 13: 15 ; #Ge 15:18-21 ; #Ge 17: 8) et si souvent réitérée par Moïse et par les prophètes.
5 L’Éternel, ton Dieu, te ramènera dans le pays que possédaient tes pères, et tu le posséderas ; il te fera du bien, et te rendra plus nombreux que tes pères.
6 L’Éternel, ton Dieu, circoncira ton cœur et le cœur de ta postérité, et tu aimeras l’Éternel, ton Dieu, de tout ton cœur et de toute ton âme, afin que tu vives.
L’Éternel … circoncira ton cœur. Cf. #De 10:16. Cette œuvre de Dieu au plus profond de l’individu correspond au salut véritable qui remplace l’insensibilité et l’entêtement spirituels par une nouvelle volonté de lui obéir (cf. #Jér 4:4 ; #Jér 9:25 ; #Ro 2:28-29). Ce nouveau cœur permettra à l’Israélite d’aimer sincèrement l’Éternel, et il est la caractéristique essentielle de la nouvelle alliance (cf. #De 29:4, #De 29:18 ; #De 30:10, #De 30:17 ; #Jér 31:31-34 ; #Jér 32:37-42 ; #Ez 11:19 ; #Ez 36:26).
7 L’Éternel, ton Dieu, fera tomber toutes ces malédictions sur tes ennemis, sur ceux qui t’auront haï et persécuté.
sur tes ennemis. Les malédictions tombées sur les Israélites suite à leur désobéissance tomberont à l’avenir sur les nations qui les auront oppressés. Le jugement de Dieu s’exercera contre ceux qui auront maudit la postérité physique d’Abraham, conformément à la promesse de #Ge 12:3.
8 Et toi, tu reviendras à l’Éternel, tu obéiras à sa voix, et tu mettras en pratique tous ces commandements que je te prescris aujourd’hui.
30:8-9
tu obéiras à sa voix. Avec un cœur renouvelé sous la nouvelle alliance, Israël obéira à tous les commandements. L’Éternel le bénira en retour, et il expérimentera une prospérité inconnue jusqu’alors.
9 L’Éternel, ton Dieu, te comblera de biens en faisant prospérer tout le travail de tes mains, le fruit de tes entrailles, le fruit de tes troupeaux et le fruit de ton sol ; car l’Éternel prendra de nouveau plaisir à ton bonheur, comme il prenait plaisir à celui de tes pères,
10 lorsque tu obéiras à la voix de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, en observant ses commandements et ses ordres écrits dans ce livre de la loi, lorsque tu reviendras à l’Éternel, ton Dieu, de tout ton cœur et de toute ton âme.
Il y a ici un rappel de l’indispensable fruit du salut et un nouvel écho au thème récurrent de ce livre.
11 ¶ Ce commandement que je te prescris aujourd’hui n’est certainement point au-dessus de tes forces et hors de ta portée.
30:11-14 Après avoir rappelé les échecs passés et formulé les perspectives d’avenir, Moïse exhorta vivement les Israélites à faire le bon choix: voulaient-ils jouir du salut et de ses bénédictions, animés par un amour de Dieu si profond qu’ils auraient plaisir à vivre dans l’obéissance à sa parole? Le choix était simple, mais il ne devait pas être fait à la légère. Il avait été énoncé en termes clairs afin qu’ils puissent comprendre et saisir ce que leur Dieu attendait d’eux (verset #De 30:11). L’Éternel avait certes parlé du haut des cieux, mais il l’avait fait par l’intermédiaire de Moïse, de manière à ce que chacun puisse comprendre (verset #De 30:12). Ils n’avaient pas besoin de chercher la vérité au-delà de la mer (verset #De 30:13), puisqu’ils en avaient eu connaissance à travers Moïse et qu’elle habitait désormais leur cœur et leur esprit (verset #De 30:14). Toute la vérité nécessaire pour choisir d’aimer Dieu et de lui obéir, et ainsi échapper à la désobéissance et aux malédictions qu’elle entraînerait, ils l’avaient entendue et la connaissaient (verset #De 30:15). Paul cite les versets #De 30:12-14 en #Ro 10:6-8.
12 Il n’est pas dans le ciel, pour que tu dises : Qui montera pour nous au ciel et nous l’ira chercher, qui nous le fera entendre, afin que nous le mettions en pratique ?
13 Il n’est pas de l’autre côté de la mer, pour que tu dises : Qui passera pour nous de l’autre côté de la mer et nous l’ira chercher, qui nous le fera entendre, afin que nous le mettions en pratique ?
14 C’est une chose, au contraire, qui est tout près de toi, dans ta bouche et dans ton cœur, afin que tu la mettes en pratique.
15 ¶ Vois, je mets aujourd’hui devant toi la vie et le bien, la mort et le mal.
Moïse précisa en quoi consistait exactement le choix des Israélites: aimer Dieu et lui obéir, c’était choisir la vie et le bien; rejeter Dieu, c’était opter pour la mort et le mal. S’ils choisissaient d’aimer Dieu et d’obéir à sa parole, ils jouiraient de toutes les bénédictions divines (verset #De 30:16). S’ils refusaient, ils seraient sévèrement et immédiatement punis (versets #De 30:17-18). Paul reprit certains termes de cet appel de Moïse en parlant du salut dans le N.T. (#Ro 10:1-13); comme lui, il affirma que le message du salut était complet et clair.
16 Car je te prescris aujourd’hui d’aimer l’Éternel, ton Dieu, de marcher dans ses voies, et d’observer ses commandements, ses lois et ses ordonnances, afin que tu vives et que tu multiplies, et que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te bénisse dans le pays dont tu vas entrer en possession.
17 Mais si ton cœur se détourne, si tu n’obéis point, et si tu te laisses entraîner à te prosterner devant d’autres dieux et à les servir,
18 je vous déclare aujourd’hui que vous périrez, que vous ne prolongerez point vos jours dans le pays dont vous allez entrer en possession, après avoir passé le Jourdain.
19 J’en prends aujourd’hui à témoin contre vous le ciel et la terre : j’ai mis devant toi la vie et la mort, la bénédiction et la malédiction. Choisis la vie, afin que tu vives, toi et ta postérité,
Choisis la vie. Moïse se montra pressant; il exhorta vivement Israël, devant Dieu (« le ciel ») et les hommes (« la terre »), à choisir, en croyant en Dieu et en l’aimant, la vie disponible au travers de la nouvelle alliance (voir le verset 6). Malheureusement, Israël n’a pas su faire le bon choix (cf. #De 31:16-18 , #De 31:27-29). Jésus a, lui aussi, parlé du choix entre la vie et la mort: celui qui croit en lui reçoit la promesse de la vie éternelle, tandis que celui qui refuse de croire en lui devra affronter la mort éternelle (cf. #Jn 3:1-36). Chacun de nous est confronté au même choix.
20 pour aimer l’Éternel, ton Dieu, pour obéir à sa voix, et pour t’attacher à lui : car de cela dépendent ta vie et la prolongation de tes jours, et c’est ainsi que tu pourras demeurer dans le pays que l’Éternel a juré de donner à tes pères, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.
DEUTERONOMY 30 : 1 to 20 + NOTES TO JOHN MACARTHUR
1 ¶ When all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse that I have set before you, if you take them to heart among all the nations where the Lord your God has driven you,
you take them to heart. Moses spent the time when the curse would be replaced with blessings. The people then recognize that the crossings difficulties were a direct result of his disobedience and would turn into an attitude of repentance to the Lord. This repentance would lead to a sincere obedience to God's commandments (# of verse 30: 8) and mark the end of his misfortunes (# of verse 30: 3). So it is here the final salvation of Israel through faith in Christ, as announced by Isaiah (#Esa 54: 4-8), Jeremiah (# Jer 31: 31-34; # Jer 32: 37-42) Ezekiel (#Ez 36: 23-38), Hosea (#Os 14: 1-9), Joel (#Joe 3: 16-21), Amos (#AM 9: 11-15) Zephaniah (3 #Sop : 14-20), Zacharias (#Za 12: 10-13: 9) Malachi (#Mal 3: 16-4: 4) and Paul (#Ro 11: 25-27).
30: 1-10 The rejection of God by Israel and Israel by God and the ensuing dispersion not would mark the end of the story of God's people. After predicting a time when Israel's disobedience cause her deportation, Moses announced, for more distant days, the restoration and redemption of Israel (see # Lev 26: 40-45) under the new covenant.
2 And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice with all your heart and with all your soul, and your children, according to all that I command you today,
3 then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you, gather you from all the nations, whither the Lord thy God hath scattered thee.
4 If your outcasts are at the other end of heaven, the Lord your God will gather you from there, and that's where he fetch thee.
30: 4-5 The gathering of Jews from all countries of the world will follow the final redemption of Israel. The restoration of the country will be the fulfillment of the promise made to Abraham (cf. #Ge 12: 7; #Ge 13: 15; #Ge 15: 18-21; #Ge 17: 8) and so often repeated by Moses and by the prophets.
5 The Lord your God will bring you into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; it will do you good, and multiply thee above thy fathers.
6 The Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of thy seed, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.
The Lord ... will circumcise your heart. See # of 10:16. This work of God in the depths of the individual is the true salvation that replaces the insensitivity and spiritual stubbornness by a new willingness to obey him (see # Jer 4: 4; Jer 9:25 #; #Ro 2 : 28-29). This new heart will allow the Jew to genuinely love the Lord and it is the essential feature of the new covenant (cf. # of 29: 4, # of 29:18; # of 30:10, # of 30 : 17; # Jer 31: 31-34; # Jer 32: 37-42; 11:19 #Ez; #Ez 36:26).
7 The Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies, on those who hate you, and persecuted.
your enemies. Curses fell on the Israelites following their disobedience will fall in the future on the nations that have oppressed. God's judgment will be exercised against those who cursed the physical descendants of Abraham according to the promise of #Ge 12: 3.
8 And you turn to the LORD, thou shalt hearken to his voice, and put into practice all these commandments which I command you today.
30: 8-9
you obey his voice. With a heart renewed under the new covenant, Israel will obey all the commandments. The Lord will bless him in return, and he will experience a prosperity hitherto unknown.
9 And the LORD thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of your hands, the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of your ground; for the LORD will again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced over thy fathers;
10 if you obey the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and are written in this book of the law, if you turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul .
Here there is a reminder of the essential fruit of salvation and a new echo the recurring theme of this book.
11 ¶ For this commandment which I command you today is certainly point above your strength and beyond your reach.
30: 11-14 After recalling past failures and made the prospects, Moses earnestly exhorted the Israelites to make the right choice: they wanted to enjoy the blessings of salvation and animated by a profound love of God that they would enjoy living in obedience to his word? The choice was simple, but it should not be done lightly. It had been stated in clear terms so that they can understand and grasp what their God expected of them (# of verse 30:11). The Lord had indeed spoken from the heavens, but he did through Moses, so that everyone can understand (# of verse 30:12). They did not need to seek the truth beyond the sea (# of verse 30:13), since they had known through Moses and that she now lived their heart and mind (# of verse 30:14). All truth necessary to choose to love God and obey him, and so escape disobedience and curses that would, they had heard and knew (# of verse 30:15). Paul quotes # of verses 30: 12-14 #Ro 10: 6-8.
12 It is not in heaven, that you should say, Who shall ascend into heaven for us and we will pick who we will hear it, that we may do it?
13 It is not the other side of the sea, that you should say, Who shall go for us on the other side of the sea and we will pick who we will hear it, that we may do in practice ?
14 It is one thing, however, which is close to you, in your mouth and in your heart, that thou mayest do it.
15 ¶ See, I set before you today life and good, death and evil.
Moses clarified what exactly was the choice of the Israelites to love God and obey him was to choose life and good; reject God, it was opt for death and evil. If they chose to love God and obey his word, they would enjoy all the blessings of God (# of verse 30:16). If they refused, they would be severely and immediately punished (# of verses 30: 17-18). Paul said some terms of the call of Moses speaking of salvation in N.T. (#Ro 10: 1-13); like him, he said that the message of salvation was complete and clear.
16 For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that you may live and multiply you, and that Lord your God may bless you in the land you are entering to possess.
17 But if your heart turns away, if you do not obey, and if you let yourself be lead away to worship other gods and serve them,
18 I declare to you today that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days in the land you are entering to possess, having crossed the Jordan.
19 I call to witness against you heaven and earth that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing. Therefore choose life, that thou mayest live, thou and thy seed,
Choose life. Moses showed pressing; he strongly urged Israel before God ( "Heaven") and men ( "earth"), to choose, believing in God and in loving, life available through the new covenant (see verse 6 ). Unfortunately, Israel has failed to make the right choice (see # of 31: 16-18, # of 31: 27-29). Jesus, too, spoke of the choice between life and death: he who believes in him receives the promise of eternal life, whereas he who refuses to believe in him will face eternal death (cf. #Jn 3: 1-36). Each of us is faced with the same choice.
20 to love the LORD thy God, to obey his voice, and hold fast to him: for he is thy life and the length of thy days, and thus you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
