1 ¶ Lorsque l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’aura fait entrer dans le pays dont tu vas prendre possession, et qu’il chassera devant toi beaucoup de nations, les Héthiens, les Guirgasiens, les Amoréens, les Cananéens, les Phéréziens, les Héviens et les Jébusiens, sept nations plus nombreuses et plus puissantes que toi ;
sept nations. Ces sept groupes ethniques contrôlaient les différentes régions du pays, qui avaient habituellement pour centre une ou plusieurs villes fortifiées. Ils étaient plus nombreux et plus forts, d’un point de vue militaire, qu’Israël. Six d’entre eux sont mentionnés ailleurs (voir #Ex 3:8). La nation des Guirgasiens est particulière, mais il est fait allusion à elle en #Ge 10:16 ; #Jos 3:10 ; #Jos 24:11 ; #1Ch 1:14 et dans les textes ougaritiques. Peut-être, s’agissait-il d’une tribu installée au nord.
7:1-26 Cette section traite des rapports entre les Israélites et les habitants de Canaan, y compris de leur destruction, de l’interdiction des mariages mixtes et de l’élimination des autels et idoles. L’heure du jugement de Dieu sur ce pays avait sonné.
2 lorsque l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te les aura livrées et que tu les auras battues, tu les dévoueras par interdit, tu ne traiteras point d’alliance avec elles, et tu ne leur feras point grâce.
les dévoueras par interdit. Hommes, femmes et enfants devaient être mis à mort. Cela nous semble excessif, mais il faut garder plusieurs réalités à l’esprit:
1° les Cananéens méritaient la mort en raison de la gravité de leur péché (#De 9:4-5 ; cf. #Ge 15:16);
2° ils persistaient dans la haine envers Dieu (v. #De 7:10);
3° leur idolâtrie et leur immoralité constituaient des menaces car elles risquaient de se répandre rapidement parmi les Israélites (#De 20:17-18).
3 Tu ne contracteras point de mariage avec ces peuples, tu ne donneras point tes filles à leurs fils, et tu ne prendras point leurs filles pour tes fils ;
point de mariage. Compte tenu de l’intimité relationnelle qu’implique un mariage, une épouse idolâtre pouvait entraîner son conjoint sur la même voie qu’elle (voir l’exemple de Salomon, #1R 11:1-8).
4 car ils détourneraient de moi tes fils, qui serviraient d’autres dieux, et la colère de l’Éternel s’enflammerait contre vous: il te détruirait promptement.
5 Voici, au contraire, comment vous agirez à leur égard: vous renverserez leurs autels, vous briserez leurs statues, vous abattrez leurs idoles, et vous brûlerez au feu leurs images taillées.
renverserez leurs autels. Une telle destruction éviterait aux Israélites d’être tentés d’imiter les pratiques religieuses des nations qu’ils devaient chasser du pays promis.
6 Car tu es un peuple saint pour l’Éternel, ton Dieu ; l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’a choisi, pour que tu fusses un peuple qui lui appartînt entre tous les peuples qui sont sur la face de la terre.
un peuple saint pour l’Éternel, ton Dieu. L’ordre de détruire les Cananéens était fondé sur l’élection d’Israël par Dieu: il avait un but précis en mettant à part cette nation comme son bien le plus précieux. En tant que peuple de Dieu, Israël devait être préservé de la pollution morale des Cananéens.
7 Ce n’est point parce que vous surpassez en nombre tous les peuples, que l’Éternel s’est attaché à vous et qu’il vous a choisis, car vous êtes le moindre de tous les peuples.
8 Mais, parce que l’Éternel vous aime, parce qu’il a voulu tenir le serment qu’il avait fait à vos pères, l’Éternel vous a fait sortir par sa main puissante, vous a délivrés de la maison de servitude, de la main de Pharaon, roi d’Égypte.
vous aime … tenir le serment. Le choix d’Israël comme nation sainte, mise à part pour l’Éternel, était fondé sur l’amour de Dieu et sur sa fidélité aux promesses faites aux patriarches, et non sur un quelconque mérite ou une quelconque bonté intrinsèque d’Israël.
9 Sache donc que c’est l’Éternel, ton Dieu, qui est Dieu. Ce Dieu fidèle garde son alliance et sa miséricorde jusqu’à la millième génération envers ceux qui l’aiment et qui observent ses commandements.
la millième génération. Manière sémitique de dire « un nombre infini de fois ».
10 Mais il use directement de représailles envers ceux qui le haïssent, et il les fait périr ; il ne diffère point envers celui qui le hait, il use directement de représailles.
11 Ainsi, observe les commandements, les lois et les ordonnances que je te prescris aujourd’hui, et mets-les en pratique.
12 ¶ Si vous écoutez ces ordonnances, si vous les observez et les mettez en pratique, l’Éternel, ton Dieu, gardera envers toi l’alliance et la miséricorde qu’il a jurées à tes pères.
gardera envers toi l’alliance. En obéissant à l’Éternel, les Israélites pourraient expérimenter la grâce associée à l’alliance. Ils pouvaient cependant aussi perdre les bénédictions de l’alliance par leur propre désobéissance.
7:12-15 L’Éternel promit aux Israélites des bénédictions particulières en cas d’obéissance. Elles sont énumérées en #De 28:1-14.
13 Il t’aimera, il te bénira et te multipliera ; il bénira le fruit de tes entrailles et le fruit de ton sol, ton blé, ton moût et ton huile, les portées de ton gros et de ton menu bétail, dans le pays qu’il a juré à tes pères de te donner.
blé … moût … huile. Il s’agit des trois principaux produits alimentaires de la région d’Israël. Le blé désigne aussi d’autres céréales, dont le froment et l’orge. Le moût désigne le jus de raisin au sortir du pressoir. On utilisait l’huile d’olive pour la cuisine et les lampes.
14 Tu seras béni plus que tous les peuples ; il n’y aura chez toi ni homme ni femme stérile, ni bête stérile parmi tes troupeaux.
15 L’Éternel éloignera de toi toute maladie ; il ne t’enverra aucune de ces mauvaises maladies d’Égypte qui te sont connues, mais il en frappera tous ceux qui te haïssent.
ces mauvaises maladies d’Égypte. Certaines maladies virulentes et malignes telles que l’éléphantiasis, la dysenterie et les problèmes ophtalmiques étaient courantes en Égypte.
16 Tu dévoreras tous les peuples que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, va te livrer, tu ne jetteras pas sur eux un regard de pitié, et tu ne serviras point leurs dieux, car ce serait un piège pour toi.
17 Peut-être diras-tu dans ton cœur : Ces nations sont plus nombreuses que moi ; comment pourrai-je les chasser ?
18 Ne les crains point. Rappelle à ton souvenir ce que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, a fait à Pharaon et à toute l’Égypte,
19 les grandes épreuves que tes yeux ont vues, les miracles et les prodiges, la main forte et le bras étendu, quand l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’a fait sortir : ainsi fera l’Éternel, ton Dieu, à tous les peuples que tu redoutes.
20 L’Éternel, ton Dieu, enverra même les frelons contre eux, jusqu’à la destruction de ceux qui échapperont et qui se cacheront devant toi.
Dieu enverra même les frelons. Le frelon, ou la guêpe, était un gros insecte, connu en Canaan, dont l’aiguillon pouvait être fatal. Ce v. doit probablement être pris au sens figuré pour parler de la panique provoquée dans une grande armée par l’intervention de l’Éternel (voir #De 11:25).
21 Ne sois point effrayé à cause d’eux ; car l’Éternel, ton Dieu, est au milieu de toi, le Dieu grand et terrible.
22 L’Éternel, ton Dieu, chassera peu à peu ces nations loin de ta face ; tu ne pourras pas les exterminer promptement, de peur que les bêtes des champs ne se multiplient contre toi.
peu à peu. Même si l’Éternel avait promis une défaite rapide des peuples du pays (#De 4:26 ; #De 9:3), le processus de colonisation serait graduel afin que la terre ne retourne pas à un état d’anarchie naturelle.
23 L’Éternel, ton Dieu, te les livrera ; et il les mettra complètement en déroute, jusqu’à ce qu’elles soient détruites.
24 Il livrera leurs rois entre tes mains, et tu feras disparaître leurs noms de dessous les cieux ; aucun ne tiendra contre toi, jusqu’à ce que tu les aies détruits.
25 Vous brûlerez au feu les images taillées de leurs dieux. Tu ne convoiteras point et tu ne prendras point pour toi l’argent et l’or qui sont sur elles, de peur que ces choses ne te deviennent un piège ; car elles sont en abomination à l’Éternel, ton Dieu.
26 Tu n’introduiras point une chose abominable dans ta maison, afin que tu ne sois pas, comme cette chose, dévoué par interdit ; tu l’auras en horreur, tu l’auras en abomination, car c’est une chose dévouée par interdit.
en horreur … en abomination. Ces mots expriment une désapprobation et un rejet particulièrement forts. Israël devait adopter envers les idoles des Cananéens la même attitude que Dieu lui-même.
chose dévouée par interdit. Cela signifiait qu’il fallait détruire toutes les images ou idoles.
DEUTERONOMY 7 : 1 to 26 + NOTES TO JOHN MACARTHUR
1 ¶ When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, seven more nations and mightier than thou;
seven nations. These seven ethnic groups controlled different parts of the country, who usually for one or more central fortified cities. They were more numerous and stronger, from a military standpoint, Israel. Six of them are mentioned elsewhere (see #Ex 3: 8). The nation Girgashites is special, but it is alluded to it in #Ge 10:16; #Jos 3:10; #Jos 24:11; # 1Ch 1:14 ET in the Ugaritic texts. Perhaps, was it a tribe settled in the north.
7: 1-26 This section deals with the relationship between the Israelites and the inhabitants of Canaan, including destruction of the prohibition of mixed marriages and the elimination of the altars and idols. The hour of God's judgment on this country had come.
2 when the LORD thy God shall deliver thee, and thou shalt smite them, thou utterly thou shalt not treat her alliance with them, and thou shalt not through them.
the utterly. Men, women and children should be put to death. This seems excessive, but keep in mind several realities:
1 Canaanites deserved to die because of the gravity of their sin (# of 9: 4-5; cf. #Ge 3:16 p.m.)
2. they persisted in hatred toward God (v # of 7:10.);
3. idolatry and immorality were threatened because they were likely to spread quickly among the Israelites (# of 20: 17-18).
3 You contracteras marriages with these people, you do not give your daughter to their son, and thou shalt not take their daughters unto thy son;
Wedding point. Given the relational intimacy implies a wedding, a bride could lead idolizes his spouse on the same track it (see the example of Solomon, # 1R 11: 1-8).
4 For they will turn your son from me, to serve other gods, and the anger of the Lord was kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.
5 Here, in contrast, how you do to them: you shall destroy their altars, break their pillars, cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.
destroy their altars. Such destruction would prevent the Israelites from being tempted to imitate the religious practices of the nations they had to chase the promised land.
6 For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.
a holy people to the LORD your God. The order to destroy the Canaanites was based on the election of Israel by God, he had a specific purpose in setting aside this nation as its most valuable asset. As people of God, Israel had to be protected against the moral pollution of the Canaanites.
7 It is not because you were more in number than any people, which the Lord has committed to you and he chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples.
8 But because the LORD loves you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, the Lord brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
you like ... keep the oath. The choice of Israel as a holy nation, set apart for the Lord was based on God's love and faithfulness to the promises made to the patriarchs, and not on any merit or any intrinsic goodness of Israel.
9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God. The faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.
the thousandth generation. Semitic way of saying "an infinite number of times."
10 But he uses direct retaliation against those who hate him, and he destroyed them; he delayed not to him who hates him, he will repay reprisals.
11 So keep the commandments, statutes and judgments which I command you today, and put them into practice.
¶ 12 If you listen to these ordinances, and keep and if you do them, the Lord thy God, to keep you the covenant and the mercy which He swore to your fathers.
keep with you the covenant. By obeying the Lord, the Israelites could experience the grace associated with the covenant. However, they could also lose the blessings of the covenant by their own disobedience.
7: 12-15 The Lord promised the Israelites special blessings for obedience. They are listed in # of 28: 1-14.
13 He will love you, it will bless you and multiply you; he will bless the fruit of thy body and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your wine and your oil, the increase of your herds and your flocks in the land he swore to your fathers to give you.
Wheat mash ... ... oil. These are the three main food of the region of Israel. Wheat also designates other cereals including wheat and barley. The must designate the grape juice coming out of the press. Olive oil was used for cooking and lamps.
14 Thou shalt be blessed above all peoples; there will be among you man or woman infertile or sterile among your cattle.
15 The Lord will take away from you all sickness; and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt which you have known, but will lay them upon all who hate you.
the evil diseases of Egypt. Some virulent and malignant diseases such as elephantiasis, dysentery and ophthalmic problems were common in Egypt.
16 And thou shalt consume all the people which the LORD thy God shall deliver you, you do not shall thine eye pity them, neither shalt thou serve their gods, for that would be a snare to you.
17 Perhaps thou say in thine heart, These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?
18 Fear them not. Remind your memory that the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt;
19 The great temptations which thine eyes have seen, miracles and wonders, the mighty hand and outstretched arm, the LORD your God brought you out: so shall the LORD thy God, to all peoples you fear.
20 The LORD thy God will send the hornet against them, until the destruction of those who are left, and hide themselves from thee.
God will send the hornet. The hornet or wasp, was a large insect, known in Canaan, whose sting could be fatal. This v. should probably be taken figuratively to refer to the panic caused in a large army by the intervention of the Lord (see # of 11:25).
21 Be not afraid because of them; for the LORD thy God is among you, a mighty God and terrible.
22 The LORD your God gradually drive out these nations from before thee; thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field multiply against you.
gradually. Although the Lord had promised a rapid defeat of the peoples of the country (# of 4:26; # of 9: 3), the colonization process would be gradual so that the earth does not return to a state of natural anarchy.
23 The LORD your God will deliver them to you; He will put them into great confusion until they are destroyed.
24 He will give their kings into thy hand, and thou shalt destroy their name from under heaven; none held against you, until you have destroyed them.
25 You burn with fire the graven images of their gods. Thou shalt not covet and you take it for yourselves silver and gold that is on them, lest these things you become a trap; for they are an abomination to the Lord your God.
26 Thou shalt not bring an abomination into your house so that you're not like this thing, accursed thou shalt abhor, you abhor, for it is a cursed thing.
horror ... an abomination. These words express a particularly strong disapproval and rejection. Israel should adopt towards the idols of the Canaanites the same attitude as God himself.
cursed thing. This meant destroying all images or idols.
