10 ¶ Entre dans les rochers, Et cache-toi dans la poussière, Pour éviter la terreur de l’Éternel Et l’éclat de sa majesté.
11 L’homme au regard hautain sera abaissé, Et l’orgueilleux sera humilié: L’Éternel seul sera élevé ce jour-là.
12 Car il y a un jour pour l’Éternel des armées Contre tout homme orgueilleux et hautain, Contre quiconque s’élève, afin qu’il soit abaissé ;
13 Contre tous les cèdres du Liban, hauts et élevés, Et contre tous les chênes de Basan ;
14 Contre toutes les hautes montagnes, Et contre toutes les collines élevées ;
15 Contre toutes les hautes tours, Et contre toutes les murailles fortifiées ;
16 Contre tous les navires de Tarsis, Et contre tout ce qui plaît à la vue.
17 L’homme orgueilleux sera humilié, Et le hautain sera abaissé : L’Éternel seul sera élevé ce jour-là.
18 Toutes les idoles disparaîtront.
19 On entrera dans les cavernes des rochers Et dans les profondeurs de la poussière, Pour éviter la terreur de l’Éternel et l’éclat de sa majesté, Quand il se lèvera pour effrayer la terre.
20 En ce jour, les hommes jetteront Leurs idoles d’argent et leurs idoles d’or, Qu’ils s’étaient faites pour les adorer, Aux rats et aux chauves-souris ;
21 Et ils entreront dans les fentes des rochers Et dans les creux des pierres, Pour éviter la terreur de l’Éternel et l’éclat de sa majesté, Quand il se lèvera pour effrayer la terre.
22 Cessez de vous confier en l’homme, Dans les narines duquel il n’y a qu’un souffle : Car de quelle valeur est-il ?

2:10-22 Cette section décrit quelle sera la situation lors du jour de l’Éternel à venir. Certains éléments pouvaient s’appliquer à ce que Juda devrait endurer lors de la déportation à Babylone, mais l’intensité des châtiments exclut un plein accomplissement à cette époque-là. C’est lors de la grande tribulation (période précédant immédiatement le retour de Christ) qu’ils s’accompliront.

jour pour l’Éternel. L’expression « jour de l’Éternel » (ou « jour du Seigneur ») apparaît 19 fois dans l’A.T. (#Esa 2:12 ; #Esa 13:6, #Esa 13:9 ; #Ez 13:5 ; #Ez 30:3 ; #Joe 1:15 ; #Joe 2:1, #Joe 2:11, #Joe 2:31 ; #Joe 3:14 ; #Am 5:18, #Am 5:20 ; #Ab 15 ; #Sop 1:7, #Sop 1:14 ; #Za 14:1 ; #Mal 4:5) et 4 fois dans le N.T. (#Ac 2:20 ; #1Th 5:2 ; #2Th 2:2 ; #2P 3:10) pour désigner le temps du déversement de l’extrême colère de Dieu. Il peut s’agir d’un jugement proche (#Ez 13:5 ; #Ez 30:3) ou très lointain (#Za 14:1 ; #2Th 2:2). Deux de ses expressions restent à venir:
1° à la fin de la 70e semaine de Daniel (voir #Joe 3:14 ; #Mal 4:5 ; #1Th 5:2);
2° à la fin du millénium (voir #2P 3:10).
Le jour de l’Éternel peut s’accomplir à travers des moyens providentiels (#Ez 30:3) ou être l’œuvre directe de Dieu (#2P 3:10). Parfois, son accomplissement imminent (#Joe 1:15) préfigure son accomplissement plus lointain (#Joe 3:14); d’autres fois, les deux accomplissements sont inclus dans le même passage (#Esa 13:6, #Esa 13:9 ; #Sop 1:7, #Sop 1:14). Ici, Esaïe considère un « jour de l’Éternel » éloigné, à la fin du « temps d’angoisse pour Jacob » (#Jér 30:7).
cèdres du Liban … chênes de Basan. Les cèdres et les chênes étaient l’objet d’une grande admiration dans l’A.T. (#Ps 92:13 ; #Ps 104:16 ; #Ez 27:6 ; #Ez 31:3). Cependant, aussi impressionnants soient-ils, ces éléments de la création seront détruits à cause de la rébellion des hommes.

cavernes des rochers … profondeurs de la Poussière.#Ap 6:12, #Ap 6:15-16 utilise ce v. ainsi que le v. 21 pour décrire la fuite des hommes devant les terreurs de la tribulation, pendant la période précédant le retour de Christ sur la terre. Cela indique que l’accomplissement final de cette prophétie aura lieu pendant la 70e semaine de Daniel.

13 against all the cedars of Lebanon, high and lifted up, and against all the oaks of Bashan;
14 against all the high mountains, and against all the lofty hills;
15 against every high tower, and against every fortified wall;
16 against all the ships of Tarshish, and against all that pleasant pictures.
17 The arrogant man will be humbled, and the haughtiness will be lowered: the LORD alone will be exalted in that day.
18 All the idols disappear.
19 And they shall go into the caves of the rocks, and into the depths of the dust, for fear of the LORD and the splendor of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.
20 In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver and their idols of gold, which they made to worship, to the moles and to the bats;
21 To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the hollows of the rocks, for fear of the LORD and the splendor of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.
22 Cease ye from man, in his nostrils which there is a breath: for of what account is he?

2:10-22 This section describes what will be the situation when the day of the Lord to come. Some elements could apply that Judah would endure during the deportation to Babylon, but the intensity of punishment excludes full accomplishment that time. It was during the great tribulation (period immediately preceding the return of Christ) they will be fulfilled.

day for the Lord. The term "day of the Lord" (or "day of the Lord") appears 19 times in the OT (# Isa 2:12, Isa 13:6 #, # Isa 13:9; # Ez 13:5; # Ez 30:3; # Joe 1:15; 2:1 # Joe, Joe # 2:11 # Joe 2:31; # Joe 3:14; # Am 5:18 # Am 5:20; Ab # 15, # 1:7 Sop, Sop # 1:14, # Zec 14:1; # Mal 4:5 ) and 4 times in the NT (# Ac 2:20; # 1Th 5:2; # 2Th 2:2; # 2P 3:10) to designate the time the dumping of extreme wrath. It may be a close (# Ez 13:5; # Ez 30:3) judgment or very distant (# Zec 14:1; # 2Th 2:2). Two of his expressions are still to come:
1 at the end of the 70th week of Daniel (see # Joe 3:14; # Mal 4:5; # 1Th 5:2);
2 at the end of the millennium (see # 2P 3:10).
The day of the Lord can be accomplished through providential means (# Ez 30:3) or the direct work of God (# 2P 3:10). Sometimes its imminent completion (# Joe 1:15) foreshadows his more distant fulfillment (# Joe 3:14); other times, the two achievements are included in the same passage (Isaiah 13:6 #, # Isa 13:9, 1:7 # Sop, Sop # 1:14). Here, Isaiah sees a "day of the Lord" away at the end of the "time of Jacob's trouble" (Jer. 30:7 #).
cedars of Lebanon ... oaks of Bashan. Cedars and oaks were the object of great admiration in the OT (# Ps 92:13, Ps 104:16 #, # Ez 27:6; # Ez 31:3). However, as impressive as they are, these elements of creation will be destroyed because of the rebellion of men.

caves of the rocks ... the depths of the Dust. # Rev 6:12, Rev 6:15-16 uses this # v. v and the. 21 to describe the flight of men before the terrors of the tribulation, during the period preceding the return of Christ on earth. This indicates that the final fulfillment of this prophecy will take place during the 70th week of Daniel.

Cease ye. Invitation to no longer rely on other men and only trust God, who alone is worthy.
