ÉSAÏE 10 : 12 À 20 ***
12 Mais, quand le Seigneur aura accompli toute son œuvre Sur la montagne de Sion et à Jérusalem, Je punirai le roi d’Assyrie pour le fruit de son cœur orgueilleux, Et pour l’arrogance de ses regards hautains.
13 Car il dit : C’est par la force de ma main que j’ai agi, C’est par ma sagesse, car je suis intelligent ; J’ai reculé les limites des peuples, et pillé leurs trésors, Et, comme un héros, j’ai renversé ceux qui siégeaient sur des trônes ;
14 J’ai mis la main sur les richesses des peuples, comme sur un nid, Et, comme on ramasse des œufs abandonnés, J’ai ramassé toute la terre : Nul n’a remué l’aile, Ni ouvert le bec, ni poussé un cri. -
15 La hache se glorifie-t-elle envers celui qui s’en sert ? Ou la scie est-elle arrogante envers celui qui la manie ? Comme si la verge faisait mouvoir celui qui la lève, Comme si le bâton soulevait celui qui n’est pas du bois !
16 C’est pourquoi le Seigneur, le Seigneur des armées, enverra Le dépérissement parmi ses robustes guerriers ; Et, sous sa magnificence, éclatera un embrasement, Comme l’embrasement d’un feu.
17 La lumière d’Israël deviendra un feu, Et son Saint une flamme, Qui consumera et dévorera ses épines et ses ronces, En un seul jour ;
18 Qui consumera, corps et âme, La magnificence de sa forêt et de ses campagnes. Il en sera comme d’un malade, qui tombe en défaillance.
19 Le reste des arbres de sa forêt pourra être compté, Et un enfant en écrirait le nombre.
20 ¶ En ce jour-là, Le reste d’Israël et les réchappés de la maison de Jacob, Cesseront de s’appuyer sur celui qui les frappait ; Ils s’appuieront avec confiance sur l’Eternel, le Saint d’Israël.

je punirai le roi d’Assyrie. Le Seigneur avait bien l’intention de punir l’orgueilleuse Assyrie, une fois qu’il n’aurait plus besoin d’elle pour châtier Jérusalem.
10:13-14 Le prophète prouva que le roi d’Assyrie était orgueilleux, puisqu’il réitéra ses fanfaronnades (cf. vv. #Esa 10:8-11).
10:15
hache … scie … verge … bâton. L’Assyrie n’avait aucun pouvoir en elle-même, elle n’était rien de plus que l’instrument de Dieu (vv. #Esa 10:5, #Esa 10:24).
10:16-19
embrasement … l’embrasement d’un feu … flamme … consumera. Une fois qu’il aurait terminé d’utiliser l’Assyrie, le Seigneur mettrait un terme à l’existence de ce royaume (voir le v. 12).
10:20
le reste d’Israël. Cf. #Esa 1:9. Un petit noyau du peuple de Dieu, préservé par sa grâce souveraine, compose ce petit reste de justes au milieu de la nation apostate. Il y a toujours eu des Juifs obéissants: ils ont préservé la loi divine, lui ont été fidèles et l’ont transmise à la postérité. Ce reste ne disparaîtra jamais, parce que Dieu n’abandonnera jamais son alliance avec Abraham (cf. #Mi 2:12-13 ; #Ro 9:27 ; #Ro 11:5).

12 But when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the king of Assyria for the fruit of the stout heart, and the glory of his high looks.
13 For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, because I'm smart; I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and, as a hero, I spilled those who sat on thrones;
14 I got my hands on the riches of the peoples like a nest, and as one gathers eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth: No one moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or screamed. -
15 The ax does boast against him who uses it? Or shall the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? As if the rod should shake whoever rises, as if the staff should lift him who is not wood!
16 Therefore the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his decline leanness; And under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.
17 The light of Israel will become a fire, and his Holy One for a flame will burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;
18 Who devour, body and soul, the glory of his forest and of his campaigns. It is like a patient who faints.
19 The rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them.
¶ 20 In that day the remnant of Israel and the remnant of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; They stay upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.

10:12
I will punish the king of Assyria. The Lord had every intention to punish the proud Assyrian, once he no longer needed her to punish Jerusalem.
10:13-14 The prophet proved that the king of Assyria was proud, since repeated his swagger (cf. vv. # Esa 10:8-11).
10:15
ax ... saw ... penis ... stick. Assyria had no power in itself, it was nothing more than the instrument of God (vv. # Esa 10:5, Isaiah 10:24 #).
10:16-19
fire ... the burning of a fire ... fire ... burn. Once he had finished using Assyria, the Lord put an end to the existence of this kingdom (see ver. 12).
10:20
the rest of Israel. See # Esa 1:9. A small core of people of God, preserved by His sovereign grace, made this small remnant of righteous within the apostate nation. There has always been obedient Jews: they preserved the divine law, he has been faithful and passed to posterity. The rest will never disappear, because God will never forsake His covenant with Abraham (cf. # Mi 2:12-13, # Ro 9:27, Ro # 11:5).
