ÉSAÏE 11 : 1 À 9 ***
1 ¶ Puis un rameau sortira du tronc d’Isaï, Et un rejeton naîtra de ses racines.
2 L’Esprit de l’Eternel reposera sur lui: Esprit de sagesse et d’intelligence, Esprit de conseil et de force, Esprit de connaissance et de crainte de l’Eternel.
3 Il respirera la crainte de l’Eternel ; Il ne jugera point sur l’apparence, Il ne prononcera point sur un ouï-dire.
4 Mais il jugera les pauvres avec équité, Et il prononcera avec droiture sur les malheureux de la terre ; Il frappera la terre de sa parole comme d’une verge, Et du souffle de ses lèvres il fera mourir le méchant.
5 La justice sera la ceinture de ses flancs, Et la fidélité la ceinture de ses reins.
6 Le loup habitera avec l’agneau, Et la panthère se couchera avec le chevreau ; Le veau, le lionceau, et le bétail qu’on engraisse, seront ensemble, Et un petit enfant les conduira.
7 La vache et l’ourse auront un même pâturage, Leurs petits un même gîte ; Et le lion, comme le bœuf, mangera de la paille.
8 Le nourrisson s’ébattra sur l’antre de la vipère, Et l’enfant sevré mettra sa main dans la caverne du basilic.
9 Il ne se fera ni tort ni dommage Sur toute ma montagne sainte ; Car la terre sera remplie de la connaissance de l’Eternel, Comme le fond de la mer par les eaux qui le couvrent.

11:1
rameau … racines. Avec la déportation à Babylone en 586 av. J.-C., la dynastie davidique sembla aussi décimée que l’armée assyrienne. La différence la plus importante entre les deux résidait dans le fait qu’il restait encore beaucoup de vie dans la souche et les racines de la lignée davidique, vie qui allait se manifester dans une nouvelle croissance, sous la forme du « rameau » et du « rejeton ».
Isaï. C’était le père de David, dont le roi messianique devait être issu (#Ru 4:22 ; #1S 16:1, #1S 16:12-13).
rejeton. C’est l’un des titres du Messie (voir « germe » en #Esa 4:2).
11:2
L’Esprit de l’Éternel. L’Esprit de l’Éternel descendit sur David lorsqu’il fut oint roi (#1S 16:13 ; #Ps 51:13), et il reposera aussi sur son descendant, Christ, qui régnera sur le monde.
L’Esprit … lui … l’Éternel. Ce v. renvoie aux trois personnes de la Trinité (voir #Esa 6:3).
de sagesse et d’intelligence … de conseil et de force … de connaissance et de crainte de l’Éternel. Ces qualifications, accordées par l’Esprit, rendront le Messie capable de régner avec justice et efficacité. Comparer avec les sept esprits d’#Ap 1:4.
11:3
l’apparence … un ouï-dire. Ce sont là les moyens ordinaires que les rois utilisent couramment pour obtenir les informations qui leur sont indispensables pour gouverner. Le roi messianique, quant à lui, aura des facultés de perception surnaturelles, bien plus fiables que ces ressources habituelles.
11:4
les pauvres … équité. Le Messie renversera la façon dont Israël traitait les pauvres (#Esa 3:14-15 ; #Esa 10:2).
une verge. Le règne du « rejeton » sur les nations sera rigoureux. Le N.T. utilise une terminologie similaire pour décrire le divin guerrier lors de son retour triomphal sur la terre (#Ap 19: 15 ; cf. #Esa 49:2 ; #Ps 2:9).
souffle de ses lèvres. Figure supplémentaire pour décrire la façon dont le Messie provoquera un mal physique. Paul emploie cette image pour évoquer la destruction de « l’impie » lors de la seconde venue de Christ (#2Th 2:8).
11:5
ceinture … . ceinture. La ceinture, qui servait à resserrer les vêtements contre le corps, évoque la détermination du Messie à mener le combat. La justice et la loyauté sont au centre de ses préoccupations. Cf. #Ep 6:14.
11:6-9 Les conditions de la paix seront parfaitement remplies, puisque toute agressivité entre les hommes, entre les animaux rapaces ou autres - et entre les hommes et les animaux aura disparu. Ce sera une caractéristique du millénium, le règne du Prince de la paix (#Esa 9:5).
11:9
remplie de la connaissance de l’Éternel. Quand l’Éternel reviendra pour concrétiser sa nouvelle alliance avec Israël, tout le monde le connaîtra (#Jér 31:34).

1 ¶ Then a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
2 The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord.
3 He in the fear of the LORD; He shall not judge on appearance, it neither decide on hearsay.
4 But he shall judge the poor with justice, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; He shall smite the earth with his speech as a rod, and the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.
6 The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; The calf and the young lion and the fatling will be together, and a little child shall lead them.
7 The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; And the lion, like the ox shall eat straw.
8 The infant will play near the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice 'den.
9 He will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain; For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of Jehovah, as the bottom of the sea by the waters cover.

11:1
branch ... roots. With the deportation to Babylon in 586 BC. BC, the Davidic dynasty seemed also decimated the Assyrian army. The most important difference between the two was the fact that there is still plenty of life in the stump and roots of the Davidic lineage, life would manifest in new growth in the form of "branch" and "offspring".
Jesse. This was the father of David, the messianic king was to be born (# Ru 4:22; 1S 16.1 #, # 1S 16:12-13).
offspring. This is a title of the Messiah (see "germ" in # Esa 4:2).
11:2
The Spirit of the Lord. The Spirit of the LORD came upon David when he was anointed king (# 1S 4:13 p.m., # Ps 51:13), and also based on his descendant, Christ, who will rule the world.
The Spirit ... him ... the Lord. This v. refers to the three persons of the Trinity (see # Isa 6:3).
wisdom and intelligence ... of counsel and of strength ... of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. These qualifications granted by the Spirit, the Messiah will be able to rule with justice and efficiency. Compare with the seven spirits of # Rev 1:4.
11:3
appearance ... hearsay. These are the ordinary that kings commonly use to get the information they needed to govern means. The messianic king, meanwhile, will have supernatural powers of perception, much more reliable than the usual resources.
11:4
poor ... equity. The Messiah will reverse the way Israel treated the poor (# Esa 3:14-15; # Esa 10:2).
a rod. The reign of the "offspring" of the nations will be rigorous. The NT uses similar terminology to describe the divine warrior during his triumphant return to the earth (Rev. # 19: 15, cf Isaiah 49:2 #, # Ps 2:9.).
breath of his lips. Figure further to describe how the Messiah will cause physical harm. Paul uses this image to evoke the destruction of the "wicked" at the second coming of Christ (# 2Th 2:8).
11:5
belt .... belt. Belt, which served to strengthen the body against clothing, describes the determination of the Messiah to lead the fight. Justice and fairness are at the heart of its concerns. # Cf. Eph 6:14.
11:6-9 The conditions of peace will be perfectly satisfied, since any aggression between men, between animals or other birds of prey - and between men and animals have disappeared. It will be a feature of the millennium, the reign of the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:5 #).
11:9
filled with the knowledge of the Lord. When the Lord returns to implement its new alliance with Israel, everybody know (# Jer 31:34).
