ÉSAÏE 17 : 1 À 14 ***
1 ¶ Oracle sur Damas. Voici, Damas ne sera plus une ville, Elle ne sera qu’un monceau de ruines.
2 Les villes d’Aroër sont abandonnées, Elles sont livrées aux troupeaux ; Ils s’y couchent, et personne ne les effraie.
3 C’en est fait de la forteresse d’Ephraïm, Et du royaume de Damas, et du reste de la Syrie : Il en sera comme de la gloire des enfants d’Israël, Dit l’Eternel des armées.
4 En ce jour, la gloire de Jacob sera affaiblie, Et la graisse de sa chair s’évanouira.
5 Il en sera comme quand le moissonneur récolte les blés, Et que son bras coupe les épis ; Comme quand on ramasse les épis, Dans la vallée de Rephaïm.
6 ¶ Il en restera un grappillage, comme quand on secoue l’olivier, Deux, trois olives, au haut de la cime, Quatre, cinq, dans ses branches à fruits, Dit l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël.
7 En ce jour, l’homme regardera vers son créateur, Et ses yeux se tourneront vers le Saint d’Israël ;
8 Il ne regardera plus vers les autels, Ouvrage de ses mains, Et il ne contemplera plus ce que ses doigts ont fabriqué, Les idoles d’Astarté et les statues du soleil.
9 ¶ En ce jour, ses villes fortes seront Comme des débris dans la forêt et sur la cime des montagnes, Abandonnés devant les enfants d’Israël : Et ce sera un désert.
10 Car tu as oublié le Dieu de ton salut, Tu ne t’es pas souvenu du rocher de ton refuge. Aussi tu as fait des plantations d’agrément, Tu as planté des ceps étrangers ;
11 Lorsque tu les plantas, tu les entouras d’une haie, Et bientôt tu les fis venir en fleurs. Mais la récolte a fui, au moment de la jouissance : Et la douleur est sans remède.
12 ¶ Oh ! quelle rumeur de peuples nombreux ! Ils mugissent comme mugit la mer. Quel tumulte de nations ! Elles grondent comme grondent les eaux puissantes.
13 Les nations grondent comme grondent les grandes eaux … Il les menace, et elles fuient au loin, Chassées comme la balle des montagnes au souffle du vent, Comme la poussière par un tourbillon.
14 Quand vient le soir, voici, c’est une ruine soudaine ; Avant le matin, ils ne sont plus ! Voilà le partage de ceux qui nous dépouillent, Le sort de ceux qui nous pillent.

17: 1
Damas. Ville qui servait de capitale à la Syrie (hébreu Aram). Située au nord-est du mont Hermon, sur la route principale qui reliait la Mésopotamie à l’Égypte, elle était très puissante. C’est sa destruction par les Assyriens, en 732 av. J.-C., qui fait l’objet de ce ch.

Aroër. La domination syrienne s’étendait au sud jusqu’à Aroër, à l’est de la mer Morte, au bord de l’Arnon (#2R 10:32-33).
17: 3
Ephraïm. Dans cet oracle, les dix tribus du nord, aussi appelées « Israël », sont associées à la Syrie. Elles avaient en effet formé une alliance avec elle pour combattre les Assyriens, mais beaucoup de leurs villes furent victimes de la campagne fatale à la Syrie (voir v. 1).
reste de la Syrie. Suite à l’attaque assyrienne, la Syrie aurait le privilège de conserver un reste, mais pas un royaume.
17: 4
gloire de Jacob. L’affaiblissement de la gloire des dix tribus du nord, issues de Jacob, illustrait le jugement divin qui pesait contre elles.
17: 5
vallée des Rephaïm. De même que les moissonneurs avaient laissé nue cette vallée fertile à l’ouest de Jérusalem, de même le jugement de Dieu ne laisserait rien de fructueux dans le royaume du nord.
17: 6
deux, trois … quatre, cinq. Le jugement de Dieu contre Ephraïm ne laisserait subsister que quelques rares vestiges de sa richesse passée dans le domaine de la culture des oliviers.

regardera vers son créateur. De sévères châtiments devaient faire prendre conscience aux survivants d’Ephraïm qu’ils avaient cessé de dépendre du Seigneur. Cela devait faciliter leur repentance.
17: 8
ouvrage de ses mains. La repentance devait mettre un terme à l’idolâtrie qui affligeait la nation depuis si longtemps (voir #Esa 2:6-22 ; #Esa 44:9-18).
17: 10
tu as oublié le Dieu de ton salut. En cessant de se souvenir de Dieu, Israël s’était rendu vulnérable.
17: 11
tu les fis fleurir. Le prophète rappelait ainsi combien il est futile de nous évertuer à satisfaire nos besoins sans l’aide de Dieu.
17: 12
peuples nombreux. Évoquant l’approche des armées ennemies qui marchaient contre Juda, le prophète annonça le malheur qui allait les frapper.
17: 13
Il les menace. Les menaces de Dieu suffisaient à mettre en fuite ces ennemis.
17: 14
ils ne sont plus. Au matin, les forces des envahisseurs auraient disparu. Dieu protège son peuple.

¶ 1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.
2 The cities of Aroer are forsaken: they shall be for flocks; They shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid.
3 This is due to the fortress of Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the Lord of hosts.
4 In that day the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax.
5 It will be as when the harvestman gathereth the corn, and his arm cut the ears; Like when one gathers ears in the valley of Rephaim.
¶ 6 It will remain a gleaning, as the shaking of an olive tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in fruitful branches thereof, saith the LORD God of Israel.
7 In that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes to the Holy One of Israel;
8 He will not look to the altars, the work of his hands, and he did not contemplate that his fingers have made, either the groves, and statues of the sun.
¶ 9 In that day shall his strong cities be as debris in the forest and on the mountain tops, Abandoned before the children of Israel: and there shall be desolation.
10 Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, You did not remembered the rock of your refuge. So you did plantations approval, You planted strange slips:
11 When thou plantas you entouras the hedge, and soon you have made them come in bloom. But harvesting fled at the time of the enjoyment: And the pain is incurable.
12 ¶ Oh! How many peoples rumor! They roar like the roaring of the sea. Rushing of nations! They rush like the rushing of mighty waters.
13 The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters ... He threatens them, and they shall flee far away, chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, like dust in a whirlwind.
14 When evening comes, here it is sudden destruction; Before the morning, they are gone! This is the portion of them that spoil us, and the lot of them that rob us.

17: 1
Damascus. City which served as the capital of Syria (Aram Hebrew). Located northeast of Mount Hermon, on the main road that connected Mesopotamia to Egypt, it was very powerful. It is being destroyed by the Assyrians in 732 BC. AD, which is the subject of this ch.
V 17: 2
Aroer. Syrian domination extended as far south as Aroer, east of the Dead Sea, on the edge of the Arnon (# 2R 10: 32-33).
17: 3
Ephraim. In this parable, the ten northern tribes, also known as "Israel", are associated with Syria. They had indeed formed an alliance with her to fight the Assyrians, but many of their cities were victims of fatal Syria campaign (see vv. 1).
rest of Syria. Following the Assyrian attack, Syria would have the privilege of keeping a rest, not a kingdom.
17: 4
glory of Jacob. The weakening of the glory of the ten northern tribes, from Jacob, illustrated the divine judgment that weighed against them.
17: 5
valley of the giants. As the reapers had left bare this fertile valley to the west of Jerusalem, and the judgment of God would leave nothing fruitful in the northern kingdom.
17: 6
two, three ... four, five. God's judgment against Ephraim would leave only a few remnants of its rich past in the field of olive cultivation.
17: 7
look to his Maker. Severe punishment should be made aware of Ephraim survivors that they had ceased to depend on the Lord. This was to facilitate their repentance.
17: 8
his handiwork. Repentance was to put an end to idolatry which afflicted the nation for so long (see #Esa 2: 6-22; #Esa 44: 9-18).
17: 10
thou hast forgotten the God of your salvation. By ceasing to remember God, Israel had made it vulnerable.
17: 11
you have made them flourish. The prophet reminded and futility of us to strive to meet our needs without the help of God.
17: 12
Many peoples. Referring to the approach of the enemy armies who marched against Judah, the prophet announced the calamity that would strike them.
17: 13
He threatens. Threats of God sufficient to put to flight the enemy.
17: 14
they are no more. In the morning, the forces of the invaders disappeared. God protects his people.
