ÉSAÏE 18 : 1 À 7 ***
1 ¶ Terre, où retentit le cliquetis des armes, Au-delà des fleuves de l’Éthiopie !
2 Toi qui envoies sur mer des messagers, Dans des navires de jonc voguant à la surface des eaux ! Allez, messagers rapides, vers la nation forte et vigoureuse, Vers ce peuple redoutable depuis qu’il existe, Nation puissante et qui écrase tout, Et dont le pays est coupé par des fleuves.
3 Vous tous, habitants du monde, habitants de la terre, Voyez la bannière qui se dresse sur les montagnes, Écoutez la trompette qui sonne !
4 Car ainsi m’a parlé l’Éternel : Je regarde tranquillement de ma demeure, Par la chaleur brillante de la lumière, Et par la vapeur de la rosée, au temps de la chaude moisson.
5 Mais avant la moisson, quand la pousse est achevée, Quand la fleur devient un raisin qui mûrit, Il coupe les sarments avec des serpes, Il enlève, il tranche les ceps …
6 Ils seront tous abandonnés aux oiseaux de proie des montagnes Et aux bêtes de la terre ; Les oiseaux de proie passeront l’été sur leurs cadavres, Et les bêtes de la terre y passeront l’hiver.
7 En ce temps-là, des offrandes seront apportées à l’Éternel des armées, Par le peuple fort et vigoureux, Par le peuple redoutable depuis qu’il existe, Nation puissante et qui écrase tout, Et dont le pays est coupé par des fleuves ; Elles seront apportées là où réside le nom de l’Éternel des armées, Sur la montagne de Sion.

cliquetis des armes. Probable allusion à la forte armada de navires éthiopiens.
l’Ethiopie. Le mot hébreu est Cusch. Il désignait la région située au sud de l’Égypte, y compris les territoires appartenant à l’Éthiopie moderne.

mer … eaux … fleuves. Probables allusions au Nil et à ses affluents.
18:3
habitants … habitants. Le prophète appela l’humanité tout entière à faire preuve de vigilance pour percevoir les signes de l’œuvre de Dieu dans le monde.
18:4
Je regarde tranquillement. Le Seigneur attend patiemment le moment favorable pour intervenir dans les affaires humaines, celui où la chaleur du soleil et la rosée ont créé le cadre opportun.
18:5
il coupe … il enlève, il tranche. Tel un vigneron avisé, Dieu émonde (c’est-à-dire qu’il intervient directement) au moment opportun, ni trop tôt ni trop tard.
18:6
oiseaux de proie. Abandonnant le langage métaphorique, Esaïe décrit en termes crus les cadavres des victimes du jugement divin.
18:7
là où réside le nom de l’Éternel des armées. Jérusalem était, et reste, le lieu choisi par Dieu sur la terre pour en faire sa résidence (#De 12:5). La prédiction d’Esaïe s’étend ici à la future reconnaissance de Jérusalem dans le royaume du Messie.
ISAIAH 18 : 1 TO 7 ***
1 ¶ Earth, where the clicking sound of weapons, Beyond the rivers of Ethiopia!
2 You who send over sea, even in vessels of papyrus on the waters! Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation tall and smooth, To this formidable people since its inception, powerful nation and treads down, whose land the rivers divide.
3 All you inhabitants of the world, people of the land, see the banner that stands on the mountains, Hear the trumpet is blown!
4 For thus saith the Lord to me: I watch quietly from my home, a clear heat from the light, and by the steam from the dew in the heat of harvest.
5 For before the harvest, when the shoot is over, When the flower becomes a ripening grape, he cuts the sprigs with pruning hooks, He takes away, he cuts the vines ...
6 They left together unto the fowls of the mountains and to the beasts of the earth be; Birds of prey will summer on their bodies, and the beasts of the earth shall winter.
7 In that time, offerings are made to the Lord of hosts, For the strong and vigorous people, For the people since there are formidable, powerful nation and treads down, whose country is cut by rivers; They will be made where the name of the Lord Almighty resides on Mount Zion.

clash of arms. Probable allusion to the strong Ethiopian armada ships.
Ethiopia. The Hebrew word is Cush. He pointed to the area south of Egypt, including the territories belonging to modern Ethiopia.

sea ... water ... rivers. Probable allusions to the Nile and its tributaries.
18: 3
people ... people. The Prophet summoned all mankind to be vigilant to detect signs of God's work in the world.
18: 4
I watch quietly. The Lord is waiting patiently for the right moment to intervene in human affairs, one in which the sun's heat and dew formed the appropriate setting.
18: 5
he cuts ... he takes it slice. As a winemaker notified God prunes (that is to say, he is directly involved) at the appropriate time, neither too early nor too late.
18: 6
birds of prey. Leaving the metaphorical language, Isaiah describes in stark terms the bodies of the victims of divine judgment.
18: 7
where the name of the Lord Almighty resides. Jerusalem was and remains God's chosen on earth to make it his residence (# of 12: 5) place. Isaiah's prediction is used here for the future recognition of Jerusalem in the kingdom of the Messiah.
