10 O mon peuple, qui a été battu comme du grain dans mon aire ! Ce que j’ai appris de l’Éternel des armées, Dieu d’Israël, Je vous l’ai annoncé.
11 ¶ Oracle sur Duma. On me crie de Séir: Sentinelle, que dis-tu de la nuit ? Sentinelle, que dis-tu de la nuit ?
12 La sentinelle répond : Le matin vient, et la nuit aussi. Si vous voulez interroger, interrogez ; Convertissez-vous, et revenez.
13 ¶ Oracle sur l’Arabie. Vous passerez la nuit dans les broussailles de l’Arabie, Caravanes de Dedan !
14 Portez de l’eau à ceux qui ont soif ; Les habitants du pays de Théma Portent du pain aux fugitifs.
15 Car ils fuient devant les épées, Devant l’épée nue, devant l’arc tendu, Devant un combat acharné.
16 Car ainsi m’a parlé le Seigneur : Encore une année, comme les années d’un mercenaire, Et c’en est fait de toute la gloire de Kédar.
17 Il ne restera qu’un petit nombre des vaillants archers, fils de Kédar, Car l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël, l’a déclaré.

battu comme du grain. Le battage du blé était une activité dont la violence illustrait parfaitement l’oppression subie par Juda sous la domination de Babylone, et son résultat correspondait à la délivrance divine. Cette expression concise offrait donc de l’espoir au peuple de Dieu.
21: 11
Duma. Cette oasis d’Arabie du nord se trouvait à l’intersection de deux routes importantes: l’une menait d’est en ouest du golfe Persique à Pétra, et l’autre du nord au sud de la mer Rouge à Thadmor. Elle était à environ 480 km de Jérusalem.
Séir. Autre nom pour Edom, région située au sud de la mer Morte et lieu de résidence des descendants d’Esaü. Elle était à l’origine d’une question adressée à Esaïe.
que dis-tu de la nuit? Cela équivalait à demander combien de temps encore l’oppression assyrienne allait durer.
21: 12
matin … nuit. Le prophète promit à court terme la délivrance de l’oppression assyrienne, mais en s’empressant de mentionner la menace de la domination babylonienne.
21: 13
broussailles. Du fait de la végétation qui pousse en Arabie, la traduction « broussailles » est plus appropriée que l’autre sens possible du mot: forêt.
Dedan. Ville située sur la route menant à la mer Rouge, à environ 470 km au sud-est de Duma, dans la partie nord-ouest du désert d’Arabie.
21: 14
eau … pain. Le prophète annonça le besoin de provisions que connaîtraient ceux qui fuiraient devant l’armée assyrienne.
Théma. Théma se trouvait sur la route de la mer Rouge, à environ 320 km au sud-est de Duma, dans la partie nord-ouest du désert d’Arabie.
21: 15
ils fuient. L’Arabie intérieure servirait de refuge à ceux qui voudraient échapper aux armes sophistiquées des Assyriens.
21: 16
c’en est fait de … Kédar. Annonce de la conquête de la région par Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone (#Jér 49: 28).
Kédar. C’est-à-dire la zone nord-ouest du désert d’Arabie.

10 O my people, who was beaten as the grain of my floor! What I learned from the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, I have told you.
¶ 11 Oracle of Duma. I was crying of Seir, Watchman, what do you think of the night? Watchman, what do you think of the night?
12 The watchman said, The morning cometh, and also the night. If you will inquire, inquire; Repent and come back.
¶ 13 Oracle on Saudi. Spend the night in the forest in Arabia caravans of Dedan!
14 Bring water to the thirsty; The inhabitants of the land of Tema bread fugitives.
15 For they fled from the swords, from the drawn sword, from the bent bow, and a fierce battle.
16 For thus saith the Lord to me a year, according to the years of an hireling, and that is the end of all the glory of Kedar.
17 There remain a small number of valiant archers, son of Kedar, As the LORD God of Israel, has said.

threshing, and the grain. Threshing was an activity whose violence perfectly illustrated the oppression of Judah under the dominion of Babylon, and the result was consistent with the divine deliverance. This concise phrase therefore offered hope to the people of God.
21: 11
Duma. This oasis of northern Arabia was at the intersection of two major roads: one leading east and west of the Persian Gulf in Petra, and the other from north to south of the Red Sea at Tadmor. It was about 480 miles from Jerusalem.
Seir. Another name for Edom region south of the Dead Sea and residence of the descendants of Esau. It was originally a question to Isaiah.
what do you think of the night? It was like asking how long the Assyrian oppression would continue.
21: 12
morning ... night. The prophet promised short-term issue of the Assyrian oppression, but rushing to mention the threat of Babylonian domination.
21: 13
scrub. Due to the vegetation that grows in Arabia, "scrub" translation is more appropriate than the other possible meaning of the word forest.
Dedan. Town on the road to the Red Sea, about 470 km southeast of Duma, in the northwestern part of the Arabian Desert.
21: 14
water ... bread. The prophet announced the need for provisions that would know who would flee to the Assyrian army.
Tema. Tema was on the road to the Red Sea, about 320 miles southeast of Duma, in the northwestern part of the Arabian Desert.
21: 15
leaks. Saudi interior serve as a refuge for those who want to escape the sophisticated weapons of the Assyrians.
21: 16
this is all over ... Kedar. Announcement of the conquest of the region by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon (# Jer 49: 28).
Kedar. That is to say, the northwest region of the Arabian Desert.
