ÉSAÏE 44 : 1 À 11 ***
1 ¶ Écoute maintenant, ô Jacob, mon serviteur ! O Israël, que j’ai choisi !
2 Ainsi parle l’Éternel, qui t’a fait, Et qui t’a formé dès ta naissance, Celui qui est ton soutien : Ne crains rien, mon serviteur Jacob, Mon Israël, que j’ai choisi.
3 Car je répandrai des eaux sur le sol altéré, Et des ruisseaux sur la terre desséchée ; Je répandrai mon esprit sur ta race, Et ma bénédiction sur tes rejetons.
4 Ils pousseront comme au milieu de l’herbe, Comme les saules près des courants d’eau.
5 Celui-ci dira : Je suis à l’Éternel ; Celui-là se réclamera du nom de Jacob ; Cet autre écrira de sa main : à l’Éternel ! Et prononcera avec amour le nom d’Israël.
6 Ainsi parle l’Éternel, roi d’Israël et son rédempteur, L’Éternel des armées: Je suis le premier et je suis le dernier, Et hors moi il n’y a point de Dieu.
7 Qui a, comme moi, fait des prédictions Qu’il le déclare et me le prouve !, Depuis que j’ai fondé le peuple ancien ? Qu’ils annoncent l’avenir et ce qui doit arriver !
8 N’ayez pas peur, et ne tremblez pas ; Ne te l’ai-je pas dès longtemps annoncé et déclaré ? Vous êtes mes témoins: Y a-t-il un autre Dieu que moi ? Il n’y a pas d’autre rocher, je n’en connais point.
9 ¶ Ceux qui fabriquent des idoles ne sont tous que vanité, Et leurs plus belles œuvres ne servent à rien ; Elles le témoignent elles-mêmes : Elles n’ont ni la vue, ni l’intelligence, Afin qu’ils soient dans la confusion.
10 Qui est-ce qui fabrique un dieu, ou fond une idole, Pour n’en retirer aucune utilité ?
11 Voici, tous ceux qui y travaillent seront confondus, Et les ouvriers ne sont que des hommes ; Qu’ils se réunissent tous, qu’ils se présentent, Et tous ensembles ils seront tremblants et couverts de honte.

44:1-5 Étant donné l’ombre que les châtiments à venir faisaient peser sur le peuple (#Esa 43:26-28), le prophète souligna les abondantes bénédictions dont il bénéficierait pendant le millénium.
44:1-2
mon serviteur … choisi … fait … formé. Dieu a choisi son serviteur Israël pour qu’il soit son peuple éternellement (#Esa 43:1, #Esa 43:21, #Esa 43:25). Il ne doit par conséquent pas craindre d’être abandonné par lui.
44:2
mon Israël. Héb. Jeschurun, c’est-à-dire « droit, juste », qui était un nom honorifique d’Israël. Il faisait contraste avec la racine de « Jacob », qui évoquait la tromperie et la fourberie (cf. #De 32:15).
44:3
eaux … ruisseaux. La nation bénéficiera d’abondantes bénédictions sur le plan matériel dans le royaume à venir (#Esa 43:19-20); ces termes symbolisent aussi le rafraîchissement spirituel accordé par le Saint-Esprit et Dieu lui-même (#Esa 32:15 ; #Joe 2:28-29).
44:5
à l’Éternel … nom de Jacob … à l’Éternel … nom d’Israël. Dans le futur âge d’or d’Israël, l’appartenance à l’Éternel et l’appartenance au peuple élu iront de pair. Ce sera une marque honorifique que les élus seront fiers d’exhiber sans crainte.
44:6
roi … rédempteur … Éternel des armées … premier … dernier. Le Seigneur s’était déjà présenté comme roi d’Israël (#Esa 43:15), rédempteur (#Esa 43:14), guerrier (#Esa 1:9) et éternel (#Esa 41:4 ; cf. #Esa 48:12). Jésus se présenta comme le premier et le dernier (cf. #Ap 1:18 ; #Ap 2:8 ; #Ap 22: 13), affirmant de ce fait explicitement sa divinité.
hors moi il n’y a point de Dieu. En se désignant comme le seul Dieu, le Seigneur préparait la nouvelle confrontation avec les faux dieux des vv. 7-20 (cf. #Esa 43:10).
44:7
le prouve. Si les idoles pouvaient prédire l’avenir de façon certaine, il fallait qu’elles en fassent une démonstration aussi éclatante que celle du Seigneur. Les Juifs étaient qualifiés pour être les « témoins » du Seigneur (v. #Esa 44:8), puisqu’ils avaient bénéficié de prédictions qui s’étaient révélées justes depuis le moment où Dieu les avait choisis.
44:9-11
confusion … confondus … couverts de honte. Les artisans qui fabriquaient des idoles n’étaient que des hommes, incapables de faire quoi que ce soit de meilleur ou de plus grand que les autres hommes. Avec ceux qui mettaient leur confiance dans ces idoles, ils avaient toutes les raisons de craindre et d’avoir honte de s’être autorisé une telle folie (v. #Esa 44:11 ; contraster avec v. 8).

1 ¶ Hear now, O Jacob my servant! O Israel, I chose!
2 Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from thy womb, which will help thee: Fear not, my servant Jacob, My Israel, whom I have chosen.
3 For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing on your offspring.
4 And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water currents.
5 One shall say: I am the LORD; This one will be called by the name of Jacob; Another will write with his hand unto the Lord! And deliver with love the name of Israel.
6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts: I am the first and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.
7 And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it to me proves it, since I appointed the ancient people? They announce the future and what needs to happen!
8 Do not be afraid and do not tremble; Do I have from that time, and declared it? You are my witnesses: Will he a God beside me? There is no God; I know not.
¶ 9 Those who make idols are all vanity, and their best works are useless; They reflect themselves: They have no vision, nor know, that they are in confusion.
10 Who is it that makes a god, or molten a graven image To remove useless?
11 Behold, all those who work there will be confounded, and the workers are only human; They are all together, they have, and all together they will be trembling and ashamed.

44: 1-5 As the shadow punishment coming posed to the people (#Esa 43: 26-28) The Prophet emphasized the abundant blessings that would apply during the millennium.
44: 1-2
My servant ... chosen ... is ... formed. God chose his servant Israel to be his people forever (#Esa 43: 1, 43:21 #Esa, #Esa 43:25). It should therefore not fear being abandoned by him.
44: 2
My Israel. Heb. Jeschurun, that is to say, "Right, right," which was an honorary name of Israel. It contrasted with the root of "Jacob," which evoked the deception and deceit (see # of 32:15).
44: 3
... water streams. The nation will receive abundant blessings on the material in the coming kingdom (#Esa 43: 19-20); these terms also symbolize the spiritual refreshment provided by the Holy Spirit and God himself (#Esa 32:15; #Joe 2: 28-29).
44: 5
to the Lord ... Jacob's name to the Lord ... ... Israel's behalf. In the future golden age of Israel, belonging to the Lord and membership in the chosen people go hand in hand. It will be a mark of honor that the elect will be proud to show off without fear.
44: 6
Redeemer King ... ... ... Lord of hosts ... first last. The Lord had already presented as king of Israel (#Esa 43:15), Redeemer (#Esa 43:14), warrior (#Esa 1: 9) and eternal (#Esa 41: 4; cf. #Esa 48:12). Jesus presented himself as the first and last (cf. #Ap 1:18; #Ap 2: 8; #Ap 22: 13), stating explicitly what his divinity.
besides me there is no God. By designating it as the only God, the Lord was preparing a new confrontation with the false gods of vv. 7-20 (cf. #Esa 43:10).
44: 7
proves it. If the idols could predict the future with certainty, it was a demonstration that they make as bright as that of the Lord. Jews were qualified to be the "control" of the Lord (v #Esa. 44: 8), since they had benefited from predictions that were proven right from the moment God had chosen.
44: 9-11
confusion ... confused ... ashamed. The artisans who made idols were only men, unable to anything better or bigger than other men. With those who put their trust in idols, they had every reason to fear and shame for having allowed such folly (v #Esa 44:11;. Contrast with v. 8).
