ÉSAÏE 58 : 1 À 14 ***
1 ¶ Crie à plein gosier, ne te retiens pas, Élève ta voix comme une trompette, Et annonce à mon peuple ses iniquités, A la maison de Jacob ses péchés !
2 Tous les jours ils me cherchent, Ils veulent connaître mes voies ; Comme une nation qui aurait pratiqué la justice Et n’aurait pas abandonné la loi de son Dieu, Ils me demandent des arrêts de justice, Ils désirent l’approche de Dieu. —
3 ¶ Que nous sert de jeûner, si tu ne le vois pas ? De mortifier notre âme, si tu n’y as point égard ? — Voici, le jour de votre jeûne, vous vous livrez à vos penchants, Et vous traitez durement tous vos mercenaires.
4 Voici, vous jeûnez pour disputer et vous quereller, Pour frapper méchamment du poing ; Vous ne jeûnez pas comme le veut ce jour, Pour que votre voix soit entendue en haut.
5 Est-ce là le jeûne auquel je prends plaisir, Un jour où l’homme humilie son âme ? Courber la tête comme un jonc, Et se coucher sur le sac et la cendre, Est-ce là ce que tu appelleras un jeûne, Un jour agréable à l’Éternel ?
6 Voici le jeûne auquel je prends plaisir : Détache les chaînes de la méchanceté, Dénoue les liens de la servitude, Renvoie libres les opprimés, Et que l’on rompe toute espèce de joug ;
7 Partage ton pain avec celui qui a faim, Et fais entrer dans ta maison les malheureux sans asile ; Si tu vois un homme nu, couvre-le, Et ne te détourne pas de ton semblable.
8 ¶ Alors ta lumière poindra comme l’aurore, Et ta guérison germera promptement ; Ta justice marchera devant toi, Et la gloire de l’Éternel t’accompagnera.
9 Alors tu appelleras, et l’Éternel répondra ; Tu crieras, et il dira : Me voici ! Si tu éloignes du milieu de toi le joug, Les gestes menaçants et les discours injurieux,
10 Si tu donnes ta propre subsistance à celui qui a faim, Si tu rassasies l’âme indigente, Ta lumière se lèvera sur l’obscurité, Et tes ténèbres seront comme le midi.
11 L’Éternel sera toujours ton guide, Il rassasiera ton âme dans les lieux arides, Et il redonnera de la vigueur à tes membres ; Tu seras comme un jardin arrosé, Comme une source dont les eaux ne tarissent pas.
12 Les tiens rebâtiront sur d’anciennes ruines, Tu relèveras des fondements antiques ; On t’appellera réparateur des brèches, Celui qui restaure les chemins, qui rend le pays habitable.
13 ¶ Si tu retiens ton pied pendant le sabbat, Pour ne pas faire ta volonté en mon saint jour, Si tu fais du sabbat tes délices, Pour sanctifier l’Éternel en le glorifiant, Et si tu l’honores en ne suivant point tes voies, En ne te livrant pas à tes penchants et à de vains discours,
14 Alors tu mettras ton plaisir en l’Éternel, Et je te ferai monter sur les hauteurs du pays, Je te ferai jouir de l’héritage de Jacob, ton père ; Car la bouche de l’Éternel a parlé.

Crie à plein gosier. Le prophète devait expliquer au peuple d’Israël, dans un langage clair, quels domaines de leur comportement déplaisaient au Seigneur.
58:2
ils désirent l’approche de Dieu. Les Israélites ne manifestaient qu’une piété mécanique. Leur justice n’était qu’apparente, c’était un simulacre (#Esa 1:11).
58:3-7
Que nous sert. Les Israélites se plaignaient de ce que Dieu n’agréait pas leurs actes religieux, mais lui répondit qu’ils agissaient avec un cœur partagé. Leurs jeûnes étaient hypocrites et débouchaient sur des conflits et des querelles, ce qui excluait toute possibilité d’adresser une prière authentique à Dieu. En réalité, le jeûne représente plus qu’un rite purement extérieur; il implique une repentance réelle et ses conséquences: l’humilité, le refus de pécher et d’opprimer autrui, l’aide concrète aux affamés et une attitude pleine d’humanité envers les nécessiteux.
58:8
ta justice … t’accompagnera. Quand Israël jeûnerait de la bonne manière, il jouirait des bénédictions du salut et du royaume messianique (#Esa 52:12).
58:9
Me voici! Voir #Esa 65:1. Par contraste avec la plainte du v. 3, il viendra un temps où le Seigneur répondra pleinement aux prières de son peuple (#Esa 65:24): lorsque celui-ci se convertira et apportera la preuve de sa transformation en adoptant l’attitude qui reflète un cœur vraiment repentant (vv. #Esa 58:9-10). Lors du retour de Christ, Israël manifestera une véritable repentance, et la plénitude de la bénédiction se déversera par conséquent sur lui (vv. #Esa 58:10-11).
58:12
rebâtiront sur d’anciennes ruines. Allusion à la restauration finale de la Jérusalem du millénium. La reconstruction des murailles par Néhémie (#Né 2:17) n’en constitua qu’un avant-goût (#Esa 61:4 ; #Am 9:11).
58:13
retiens ton pied pendant le sabbat. Le sabbat était un fondement saint que personne ne devait s’autoriser à piétiner. Le respect du sabbat symbolisait l’obéissance à toute la loi de Moïse (#Esa 56:2).
58:14
mettras ton plaisir en l’Éternel. Ceux qui se repentent et marchent en communion avec le Seigneur connaissent la satisfaction de l’âme (#Ps 37:4). Leur contentement n’a pas sa source dans des biens matériels (contraster avec #Esa 55:2).

2 Every day they seek me, and delight to know my ways; As a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God, they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God. -
3 ¶ What have we fasted, if you do not see? Mortify our soul, if you are as regard the point? - Behold, the day of your fast you indulge your inclinations, and you hard all your workers.
4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness; Do not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice heard on high.
5 Is this the fast that I have chosen? A day for a man to afflict his soul? Bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?
6 this the fast that I choose: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free, and that ye break every yoke?
7 deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring to your house the homeless poor; If you see the naked, to cover him, and not to turn away from your own flesh.
8 ¶ Then shall thy light break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; Your righteousness shall go before thee, and the glory of the Lord will accompany you.
9 Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; Thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am! If you take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the pointing finger and malicious talk,
10 If you give your soul to the hungry, If you satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light will rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday.
11 The LORD will guide you continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones; Thou shalt be like a watered garden, like a spring whose waters fail not.
12 you shall build the old waste places: you raise up the foundations; We call you repair the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in that.
¶ 13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight, To sanctify the Lord, honorable; if you honor it by not following point your ways, by not delivering you to your inclinations and vain words,
14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord, and I will make you to ride on the high places, I will make you enjoy the heritage of Jacob thy father: Because the Lord's mouth has spoken.

Cry aloud. The prophet had to explain to the people of Israel, in plain language, what areas of their behavior displeased the Lord.
58: 2
they wish to approach God. The Israelites showed that mechanical piety. Their righteousness was only apparent, it was a sham (#Esa 1:11).
58: 3-7
We serve. The Israelites complained that God did not find favor their religious acts, but replied that they were acting with a divided heart. Their fasts were hypocrites and work led to conflicts and quarrels, which excluded any possibility to address a genuine prayer to God. In fact, fasting is more than a purely external rite; it involves a real repentance and its consequences: humility, refusing to sin and oppressing others, concrete help to the hungry, and an attitude full of humanity towards the needy.
58: 8
Your righteousness ... will accompany you. When Israel would fast in the right way, he would enjoy the blessings of salvation and the Messianic kingdom (#Esa 52:12).
58: 9
Here I am! See #Esa 65: 1. In contrast to the complaint v. 3, there will come a time when the Lord fully answer the prayers of his people (#Esa 65:24) when it will be converted and will demonstrate its transformation by adopting the attitude that reflects a truly repentant heart (vv . #Esa 58: 9-10). When Christ returns, Israel manifest true repentance, and the fullness of the blessing will be poured on him accordingly (#Esa vv. 58: 10-11).
58:12
build the old ruins. Referring to the final restoration of the Jerusalem of the millennium. The rebuilding of the walls by Nehemiah (# Born 2:17) not constituted a taste (#Esa 61: 4; #AM 9:11).
58:13
away thy foot from the Sabbath. The Sabbath was a holy grounds that no one should be allowed to trample. Sabbath observance symbolized obedience to all the law of Moses (#Esa 56: 2).
58:14
shalt thy pleasure in the LORD. Those who repent and walk in fellowship with the Lord know the satisfaction of the soul (#PS 37: 4). Contentment is not rooted in material goods (contrast with #Esa 55: 2).
