1 ¶ Voici les chefs de familles et les généalogies de ceux qui montèrent avec moi de Babylone, sous le règne du roi Artaxerxès.
8:1-14
de Babylone. Cette liste incluait sans aucun doute ceux qui vivaient dans les régions environnantes. Le total des hommes s’élevant à 1496, avec les femmes et les enfants on devait approcher de 7000 à 8000 personnes. De même qu’elles n’avaient pas pris part au premier retour, de même bien des Juifs choisirent de rester à Babylone. En effet, ils avaient joui d’un certain confort pendant l’exil, et ils ne voulaient plus repartir. Aucun conflit ne surgit entre ceux qui retournaient en Canaan et ceux qui restaient à Babylone.
2 Des fils de Phinées, Guerschom ; des fils d’Ithamar, Daniel ; des fils de David, Hatthusch,
3 (8-2) des fils de Schecania ; (8-3) des fils de Pareosch, Zacharie, et avec lui cent cinquante mâles enregistrés ;
4 des fils de Pachat Moab, Eljoénaï, fils de Zérachja, et avec lui deux cents mâles ;
5 des fils de Schecania, le fils de Jachaziel, et avec lui trois cents mâles ;
6 des fils d’Adin, Ébed, fils de Jonathan, et avec lui cinquante mâles ;
7 des fils d’Elam, Esaïe, fils d’Athalia, et avec lui soixante-dix mâles ;
8 des fils de Schephathia, Zebadia, fils de Micaël, et avec lui quatre-vingts mâles ;
9 des fils de Joab, Abdias, fils de Jehiel, et avec lui deux cent dix-huit mâles ;
10 des fils de Schelomith, le fils de Josiphia, et avec lui cent soixante mâles ;
11 des fils de Bébaï, Zacharie, fils de Bébaï, et avec lui vingt-huit mâles ;
12 des fils d’Azgad, Jochanan, fils d’Hakkathan, et avec lui cent dix mâles ;
13 des fils d’Adonikam, les derniers, dont voici les noms : Éliphéleth, Jeïel et Schemaeja, et avec eux soixante mâles ;
14 des fils de Bigvaï, Uthaï et Zabbud, et avec eux soixante-dix mâles.
15 Je les rassemblai près du fleuve qui coule vers Ahava, et nous campâmes là trois jours. Je dirigeai mon attention sur le peuple et sur les sacrificateurs, et je ne trouvai là aucun des fils de Lévi.
fleuve … Ahava. Emplacement inconnu proche d’un affluent de l’Euphrate. Les Juifs y passèrent trois jours à se préparer au voyage.
aucun … de Lévi. Comme aucun Lévite ne s’était porté volontaire pour retourner en Canaan, Esdras fit appel à Iddo, le chef des Néthiniens, pour dénicher ces hommes, jugés indispensables. Iddo parvint à rassembler 38 Lévites et 220 Néthiniens (vv. #Esd 8:16-20).
16 Alors je fis appeler les chefs Éliézer, Ariel, Schemaeja, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zacharie et Meschullam, et les docteurs Jojarib et Elnathan.
17 Je les envoyai vers le chef Iddo, demeurant à Casiphia, et je mis dans leur bouche ce qu’ils devaient dire à Iddo et à ses frères les Néthiniens qui étaient à Casiphia, afin qu’ils nous amenassent des serviteurs pour la maison de notre Dieu.
Néthiniens. C’étaient les serviteurs du temple. Descendants des Gabaonites, ils accomplissaient des tâches propres à des esclaves dans le temple.
18 Et, comme la bonne main de notre Dieu était sur nous, ils nous amenèrent Schérébia, homme de sens, d’entre les fils de Machli, fils de Lévi, fils d’Israël, et avec lui ses fils et ses frères, au nombre de dix-huit ;
19 Haschabia, et avec lui Esaïe, d’entre les fils de Merari, ses frères et leurs fils, au nombre de vingt ;
20 et d’entre les Néthiniens, que David et les chefs avaient mis au service des Lévites, deux cent vingt Néthiniens, tous désignés par leurs noms.
21 ¶ Là, près du fleuve d’Ahava, je publiai un jeûne d’humiliation devant notre Dieu, afin d’implorer de lui un heureux voyage pour nous, pour nos enfants, et pour tout ce qui nous appartenait.

je publiai un jeûne. Les Juifs entreprenaient un long voyage. Or c’était dangereux, car les routes étaient fréquentées par des voleurs qui pillaient pour survivre. Même les messagers voyageaient avec une escorte. Toutefois, Esdras et le peuple ne voulaient pas faire penser au roi qu’ils doutaient de la protection divine. C’est pourquoi, dans le jeûne et la prière, ils supplièrent Dieu de les protéger, et celui-ci exauça leur prière de foi.
22 J’aurais eu honte de demander au roi une escorte et des cavaliers pour nous protéger contre l’ennemi pendant la route, car nous avions dit au roi : La main de notre Dieu est pour leur bien sur tous ceux qui le cherchent, mais sa force et sa colère sont sur tous ceux qui l’abandonnent.
23 C’est à cause de cela que nous jeûnâmes et que nous invoquâmes notre Dieu. Et il nous exauça.
24 ¶ Je choisis douze chefs des sacrificateurs, Schérébia, Haschabia, et dix de leurs frères.
25 Je pesai devant eux l’argent, l’or, et les ustensiles, donnés en offrande pour la maison de notre Dieu par le roi, ses conseillers et ses chefs, et par tous ceux d’Israël qu’on avait trouvés.
26 Je remis entre leurs mains six cent cinquante talents d’argent, des ustensiles d’argent pour cent talents, cent talents d’or,

27 vingt coupes d’or valant mille dariques, et deux vases d’un bel airain poli, aussi précieux que l’or.
mille dariques. Près de 10 kg. La darique était une monnaie perse, nommée d’après Darius Ier. Cette somme correspondait à environ 500 kg d’or. Quant à la mine, elle pesait environ un demi-kilo, de sorte qu’il y avait environ 2500 kg d’argent (cf. #1Ch 29:7).
28 Puis je leur dis : Vous êtes consacrés à l’Éternel ; ces ustensiles sont des choses saintes, et cet argent et cet or sont une offrande volontaire à l’Éternel, le Dieu de vos pères.
29 Soyez vigilants, et prenez cela sous votre garde, jusqu’à ce que vous le pesiez devant les chefs des sacrificateurs et les Lévites, et devant les chefs de familles d’Israël, à Jérusalem, dans les chambres de la maison de l’Éternel.
30 Et les sacrificateurs et les Lévites reçurent au poids l’argent, l’or et les ustensiles, pour les porter à Jérusalem, dans la maison de notre Dieu.
31 ¶ Nous partîmes du fleuve d’Ahava pour nous rendre à Jérusalem, le douzième jour du premier mois. La main de notre Dieu fut sur nous et nous préserva des attaques de l’ennemi et de toute embûche pendant la route.
premier mois. Ils ne partirent que le douzième jour à cause des trois jours passés à rechercher des Lévites (v. #Esd 8:15) et du temps de jeûne destiné à implorer la protection divine (v. #Esd 8:21).
32 Nous arrivâmes à Jérusalem, et nous nous y reposâmes trois jours.
33 Le quatrième jour, nous pesâmes dans la maison de notre Dieu l’argent, l’or, et les ustensiles, que nous remîmes à Mérémoth, fils d’Urie, le sacrificateur ; il y avait avec lui Eléazar, fils de Phinées, et avec eux les Lévites Jozabad, fils de Josué, et Noadia, fils de Binnuï.
34 Le tout ayant été vérifié, soit pour le nombre, soit pour le poids, on mit alors par écrit le poids du tout.
35 Les fils de la captivité revenus de l’exil offrirent en holocauste au Dieu d’Israël douze taureaux pour tout Israël, quatre-vingt-seize béliers, soixante-dix-sept agneaux, et douze boucs comme victimes expiatoires, le tout en holocauste à l’Éternel.
36 Ils transmirent les ordres du roi aux satrapes du roi et aux gouverneurs de ce côté du fleuve, lesquels honorèrent le peuple et la maison de Dieu.
Ils transmirent les ordres du roi. Ce pluriel incluait le décret du roi, mais aussi d’autres ordres, inclus dans la correspondance officielle d’Artaxerxès, qu’Esdras fut chargé de transmettre et qui visaient à soutenir les Juifs dans leur projet de reconstruction du temple.

Of Babylon. This list undoubtedly included those who lived in the surrounding areas. The total of men stood at 1496, with women and children we had to approach 7000 to 8000 people. Just as they had not taken part in the first return, so did many Jews choose to remain in Babylon. Indeed, they had enjoyed a certain comfort during the exile, and they did not want to leave again. No conflict arose between those who returned to Canaan and those who remained in Babylon.

11 Of the sons of Bebai, Zechariah the son of Bebai, and with him twenty and eight males;
12 And of the sons of Azgad, Jochanan the son of Hakkathan, and with him a hundred ten males;
13 Of the children of Adonikam, the last, whose names are these: Eliphaeleth, Jeel and Shemaiah, and with them sixty males;
14 of the sons of Bigvai, Uthai and Zabbud, and with them seventy males.
15 And I gathered them unto the river that floweth unto Ahava, and we encamped there three days. I directed my attention to the people and to the priests, and I found none of the sons of Levi there.
River ... Ahava. Unknown location near a tributary of the Euphrates. The Jews spent three days preparing for the journey.
No ... of Levi. As no Levite had volunteered to return to Canaan, Ezra appealed to Iddo, the leader of the Nethinim, to find these men, who were deemed indispensable. Iddo succeeded in gathering 38 Levites and 220 Nethinim (vv. #Esd 8: 16-20).
16 Then I sent for Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and Meshullam, and for the doctors Jojarib and Elnathan.
17 And I sent them to the chief Iddo, dwelling in Casiphiah, and put in their mouths what they had to say to Iddo and his brethren the Nethinim that were at Casiphiah, that they might bring us servants for the house of our God.
Nethinims. They were the servants of the temple. Descendants of the Gibeonites, they performed tasks proper to slaves in the temple.
18 And as the good hand of our God was upon us, they brought us Shereibiah, a man of sense, of the sons of Machli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel, and with him his sons and his brethren, Number of eighteen;
19 Haschabiah, and with him Isaiah, of the sons of Merari, his brethren and their sons, twenty in number;
20 And of the Nethinim, whom David and the princes had put in the service of the Levites, two hundred and twenty Nethinim, all named by their names.
21 ¶ And there, by the river Ahava, I made a fast of humiliation before our God, that he might plead with him a happy journey for us, for our children, and for all that was ours.
8: 21-23
I published a fast. The Jews were on a long journey. But it was dangerous, because the roads were frequented by thieves who plundered to survive. Even the messengers were traveling with an escort. However, Ezra and the people did not want to make the king think that they doubted the divine protection. That is why, in fasting and prayer, they begged God to protect them, and he prayed their prayer of faith.
22 I should have been ashamed to ask the king for an escort and horsemen to protect us against the enemy on the way, for we had said to the king, "The hand of our God is for their good over all who seek him; His strength and his anger are upon all those who forsake him.
23 Because of this we fasted and called on our God. And he heard us.
24 ¶ And I chose twelve captains of the priests, Sherebiah, and Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren.
25 And I weighed before them the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, which were offered for the house of our God by the king, and his counselors, and by their chiefs, and by all that were found in Israel.
26 And I put into their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver, and silver vessels for a hundred talents, and a hundred talents of gold,
Six hundred and fifty talents. More than 20 tons.
A hundred talents. About 3.5 tons.
27 twenty golden bowls worth a thousand darics, and two vessels of fine polished brass, as precious as gold.
Thousand darics. About 10 kg. The daric was a Persian currency, named after Darius I. This amount was about 500 kg of gold. As for the mine, it weighed about half a kilogram, so that there were about 2500 kg of silver (see # 1Ch 29: 7).
28 And I said unto them, Ye are consecrated unto the LORD; These vessels are holy things, and this silver and gold are a voluntary offering to Jehovah, the God of your fathers.
29 Be vigilant, and take it under your care, until you weigh it before the chief priests and the Levites, and before the heads of the fathers of Israel in Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the LORD, Eternal.
30 And the priests and the Levites received the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, to carry to Jerusalem in the house of our God.
31 ¶ We went from the river Ahava to Jerusalem on the twelfth day of the first month. The hand of our God was upon us and preserved us from the attacks of the enemy and from all ambushes during the journey.
First month. They only went on the twelfth day because of the three days spent searching for Levites (see # 8d) and the time of fasting to seek divine protection (see #Ed 8:21).
32 We came to Jerusalem, and we rested there three days.
33 And it came to pass in the fourth day, that we put in the house of our God the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, which we gave to Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; There was with him Eleazar the son of Phinehas, and with them the Levites Jozabad the son of Joshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui.
34 The whole thing having been verified, either for the number or for the weight, then the weight of the whole was written down.
35 And the children of the captivity returned from exile, offering a burnt-offering to the God of Israel twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven lambs, and twelve goats as expiatory victims, all for a burnt offering To the LORD.
36 They transmitted the king's orders to the satraps of the king and to the governors on this side of the river, who honored the people and the house of God.
They transmitted the king's orders. This plural included the decree of the king, but also other orders, included in the official correspondence of Artaxerxes, which Esdras was entrusted with transmitting and which aimed to support the Jews in their project of rebuilding the temple.
