1 ¶ Lorsque Abram fut âgé de quatre-vingt-dix-neuf ans, l’Éternel apparut à Abram, et lui dit : Je suis le Dieu tout-puissant. Marche devant ma face, et sois intègre.
2 J’établirai mon alliance entre moi et toi, et je te multiplierai à l’infini.
mon alliance entre moi et toi. Dieu confirma une nouvelle fois le caractère unilatéral de son alliance avec Abram, ce qui ne signifiait pas, toutefois, que ses bénéficiaires seraient déchargés de toute responsabilité.
3 Abram tomba sur sa face ; et Dieu lui parla, en disant:
4 ¶ Voici mon alliance, que je fais avec toi. Tu deviendras père d’une multitude de nations.
une multitude de nations. La triple affirmation d’une nombreuse descendance, incluant peut-être celle d’Isaac et d’Ismaël, entoure le changement de nom (vv. #Ge 17:4-6) et lui donne une importance significative.
5 On ne t’appellera plus Abram ; mais ton nom sera Abraham, car je te rends père d’une multitude de nations.
ton nom sera Abraham. Cf. #Ge 11:27. Ce nom, avec sa signification de « père d’une multitude de nations », reflétait la nouvelle relation d’Abraham avec Dieu ainsi que sa nouvelle identité, basée sur la promesse d’une postérité. Cf. #Ro 4:17.
6 Je te rendrai fécond à l’infini, je ferai de toi des nations ; et des rois sortiront de toi.
des rois sortiront de toi. Cette promesse souligne que plusieurs peuples et nations avec leur propre droit sont issus d’Abraham.
7 ¶ J’établirai mon alliance entre moi et toi, et tes descendants après toi, selon leurs générations: ce sera une alliance perpétuelle, en vertu de laquelle je serai ton Dieu et celui de ta postérité après toi.
J’établirai mon alliance. Cette relation fut instaurée sur l’initiative de Dieu et était destinée à être une « alliance perpétuelle » (v. #Ge 17: 7). Elle s’appliquait ainsi avec la même force à la postérité d’Abraham et donnait lieu à la garantie: « Je serai leur Dieu » (v. #Ge 17: 8) qui devint le mot d’ordre dans la relation d’alliance entre Yahvé, c’est-à-dire l’Éternel, et Israël.
8 Je te donnerai, et à tes descendants après toi, le pays que tu habites comme étranger, tout le pays de Canaan, en possession perpétuelle, et je serai leur Dieu.
tout le pays de Canaan. En réaffirmant ses promesses à Abraham, Dieu ne manqua pas de mentionner le pays qui lui était remis par droit divin, ainsi qu’à ses descendants, « en possession perpétuelle ». Cf. #Ac 7:5.
9 Dieu dit à Abraham : Toi, tu garderas mon alliance, toi et tes descendants après toi, selon leurs générations.
tu garderas mon alliance. Malgré les désobéissances répétées des patriarches et de la nation d’Israël, la fidélité de Dieu à son alliance n’a jamais faibli (p. ex. #De 4:25-31 ; #De 30:1-9 ; #1Ch 16:15-18 ; #Jér 30:11 ; #Jér 46:27-28 ; #Am 9:8 ; #Lu 1:67-75 ; #Hé 6:13-18). Les attestations divines de l’obéissance d’Abraham (#Ge 22:16-18 ; #Ge 26:3-5) furent prononcées des années après la ratification formelle de l’alliance (#Ge 12:1-3 ; #Ge 15:12-18). Malgré l’apostasie du peuple, il y a toujours eu un reste d’Israélites obéissants et fidèles (voir #Sop 3:12-13).
10 C’est ici mon alliance, que vous garderez entre moi et vous, et ta postérité après toi : tout mâle parmi vous sera circoncis.
11 Vous vous circoncirez ; et ce sera un signe d’alliance entre moi et vous.
un signe d’alliance. Le rite de la circoncision (consistant à enlever le prépuce des mâles) n’était pas nouveau à cette époque-là, mais la signification religieuse et théocratique qui lui fut donnée, oui: il devint un signe d’appartenance à la lignée physique et ethnique d’Abraham (cf. #Ac 7:8 ; #Ro 4:11). Sans la révélation divine, le rite n’aurait pas eu cette signification particulière, et c’est ainsi qu’il resta une caractéristique d’Israël (cf. v. #Ge 17: 13). Il représentait un avantage du point de vue de la santé, puisque des germes pathogènes pouvaient être logés dans le sillon balano-prépucial et que le fait d’enlever le prépuce empêchait leur transmission. Historiquement, il semble que les femmes juives aient le taux de cancer du col de l’utérus le plus bas. Mais il y avait aussi un sens symbolique, lié à la nécessité d’ôter le péché et d’être purifié. L’organe mâle démontrait de la façon la plus nette la gravité de la corruption, car il transportait la semence qui engendrait des pécheurs corrompus. Ainsi, la circoncision symbolisait le besoin d’une purification profonde pour renverser les effets de la dépravation.
12 A l’âge de huit jours, tout mâle parmi vous sera circoncis, selon vos générations, qu’il soit né dans la maison, ou qu’il soit acquis à prix d’argent de tout fils d’étranger, sans appartenir à ta race.
A l’âge de huit jours. Cette précision est répétée dans #Lé 12: 3.
13 On devra circoncire celui qui est né dans la maison et celui qui est acquis à prix d’argent ; et mon alliance sera dans votre chair une alliance perpétuelle.
14 Un mâle incirconcis, qui n’aura pas été circoncis dans sa chair, sera exterminé du milieu de son peuple : il aura violé mon alliance.
sera exterminé. Être littéralement « coupé » de la communauté de l’alliance, cela signifiait perdre les avantages temporels provenant de l’appartenance à la nation unique et élue dirigée par Dieu, et cela pouvait impliquer la mort par jugement divin.

1 ¶ When Abram was ninety to nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God. Walk before me and be blameless.
2 I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.
my covenant between me and you. God confirmed once again the unilateral nature of his covenant with Abram, which does not mean, however, that the beneficiaries would be discharged from all liability.
3 Abram fell on his face; and God spoke to him, saying,
4 ¶ Here is my covenant which I make with you. You be a father of many nations.
a multitude of nations. The triple affirmation of numerous descendants, perhaps including that of Isaac and Ishmael, surrounding the name change (#Ge vv. 17: 4-6) and gives it a significant importance.
5 No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.
thy name shall be Abraham. See #Ge 11:27. This name, with its meaning "father of a multitude of nations", reflected the new Abraham's relationship with God and his new identity, based on the promise of posterity. See #Ro 4:17.
6 I will make thee exceeding fruitful, I will make nations of you; and kings shall come out of thee.
kings shall come out of thee. This promise notes that many peoples and nations with their own right are from Abraham.
7 ¶ And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, whereby God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.
I will establish my covenant. This relationship was established on the initiative of God and was intended to be a "perpetual covenant" (v #Ge. 17: 7). It thus applied with equal force to the seed of Abraham and gave rise to the guarantee: "I will be their God" (v #Ge. 17: 8), which became the watchword in the covenant relationship between Yahweh, that is to say the Lord and Israel.
8 I give thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
all the land of Canaan. Reaffirming his promises to Abraham, God did not fail to mention the country that it was given by divine right, and his descendants, "everlasting possession." #AC Cf. 7: 5.
9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.
shalt keep my covenant. Despite repeated disobedience of the patriarchs and the nation of Israel, God's faithfulness to his covenant never wavered (eg # of 4: 25-31; 30 # of.. 1-9; 1Ch 16 # : 15-18; Jer 30:11 #; # Jer 46: 27-28; #AM 9: 8; #Lu 1: 67-75; Heb # 6: 13-18). The divine attestations of Abraham's obedience (#Ge 22: 16-18; #Ge 26: 3-5) were spoken for years after the formal ratification of the covenant (#Ge 12: 1-3; #Ge 15: 12-18). Despite the apostasy of the people, there was always a remnant of Israelites obedient and faithful (see #Sop 3: 12-13).
10 This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your descendants after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised.
11 You shall circumcise you; and this will be a sign of the covenant between me and you.
a sign of alliance. The rite of circumcision (of removing the foreskin of males) was not new at that time, but the religious and theocratic meaning given to him, yes: it became a sign of belonging to the physical lineage and ethnic Abraham (cf. #AC 7: 8; 4:11 #Ro). Without divine revelation, the rite would not have had this particular meaning, and thus he remained a feature of Israel (cf. v #Ge. 17: 13). It represented an advantage from the point of view of health, since pathogens could be accommodated in the foreskin balano-fold and that to remove the foreskin preventing transmission. Historically, it seems that Jewish women have cervical cancer rates in the lowest uterus. But there was also a symbolic sense, linked to the need to take away sin and to be purified. The male organ of demonstrated most clearly the seriousness of corruption because it carried the seed that engendered corrupt sinners. Thus, circumcision symbolized the need for a deep cleansing to reverse the effects of depravity.
12 At the age of eight days old shall be circumcised among you in your generations, he was born in the house, or bought in any foreign son for money, without belonging to your race.
At the age of eight days. This point is repeated in Lev # 12: 3.
13 must be circumcised that is born in the house and he that is bought with money; and my covenant shall be in your flesh an everlasting covenant.
14 An uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.
shall be destroyed. Be literally "cut" of the community of the covenant, it meant losing the temporal benefits from membership in the nation and one elected led by God, and it could involve death by divine judgment.
