GENÈSE 18 : 1 À 19 + ***
1 ¶ L’Éternel lui apparut parmi les chênes de Mamré, comme il était assis à l’entrée de sa tente, pendant la chaleur du jour.
L’Éternel lui apparut. Un autre cas de théophanie, même si Abraham ne remarqua peut-être pas tout de suite que l’un des visiteurs qu’il salua humblement, accueillit (vv. #Ge 18:2-8) et raccompagna - (v. #Ge 18: 16) était Yahvé.
2 Il leva les yeux, et regarda : et voici, trois hommes étaient debout près de lui. Quand il les vit, il courut au-devant d’eux, depuis l’entrée de sa tente, et se prosterna en terre.
3 Et il dit : Seigneur, si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, ne passe point, je te prie, loin de ton serviteur.
Seigneur. Terme peut-être d’abord employé comme une simple formule de politesse. Plus tard, en raccompagnant ses visiteurs, Abraham utilisa ce titre en toute connaissance de cause, conscient qu’il s’adressait au Seigneur souverain, à son maître (vv. #Ge 18: 22, #Ge 18:30-32). Le visiteur se fit lui-même reconnaître en tant que « l’Éternel » (v. #Ge 18: 14).
4 Permettez qu’on apporte un peu d’eau, pour vous laver les pieds ; et reposez-vous sous cet arbre.
5 J’irai prendre un morceau de pain, pour fortifier votre cœur ; après quoi, vous continuerez votre route ; car c’est pour cela que vous passez près de votre serviteur. Ils répondirent : Fais comme tu l’as dit.
6 Abraham alla promptement dans sa tente vers Sara, et il dit : Vite, trois mesures de fleur de farine, pétris, et fais des gâteaux.
7 Et Abraham courut à son troupeau, prit un veau tendre et bon, et le donna à un serviteur, qui se hâta de l’apprêter.
8 Il prit encore de la crème et du lait, avec le veau qu’on avait apprêté, et il les mit devant eux. Il se tint lui-même à leurs côtés, sous l’arbre. Et ils mangèrent.
9 ¶ Alors ils lui dirent : Où est Sara, ta femme ? Il répondit : Elle est là, dans la tente.
18:9-13 Malgré des propos qui rappelaient clairement la promesse de Dieu à Abraham, Sara réagit avec la même incrédulité que son mari (cf. #Ge 17: 17). Elle ne pensait pas à un miracle, mais à la providence divine à l’œuvre dans le cours normal de la vie, convaincue qu’à leur âge il leur était naturellement impossible d’avoir des enfants.
10 L’un d’entre eux dit : Je reviendrai vers toi à cette même époque ; et voici, Sara, ta femme, aura un fils. Sara écoutait à l’entrée de la tente, qui était derrière lui.

11 Abraham et Sara étaient vieux, avancés en âge : et Sara ne pouvait plus espérer avoir des enfants.
12 Elle rit en elle-même, en disant : Maintenant que je suis vieille, aurais-je encore des désirs ? Mon seigneur aussi est vieux.
13 L’Éternel dit à Abraham : Pourquoi donc Sara a-t-elle ri, en disant: Est-ce que vraiment j’aurais un enfant, moi qui suis vieille ?
14 Y a-t-il rien qui soit étonnant de la part de l’Éternel ? Au temps fixé je reviendrai vers toi, à cette même époque ; et Sara aura un fils.
18:14-15 Une question rhétorique (« Y a-t-il rien qui soit étonnant … ? ») et une déclaration divine (« Au temps fixé … »), alliées à la connaissance évidente de ses pensées (« Elle rit en elle-même »), firent prendre conscience à Sara de sa mauvaise perception de l’œuvre de Dieu.
15 Sara mentit, en disant : Je n’ai pas ri. Car elle eut peur. Mais il dit : Au contraire, tu as ri.
16 ¶ Ces hommes se levèrent pour partir, et ils regardèrent du côté de Sodome. Abraham alla avec eux, pour les accompagner.
17 Alors l’Éternel dit : Cacherai-je à Abraham ce que je vais faire ? …
18:17-18 Cacherai-je à Abraham ce que je vais faire? La raison pour laquelle le Seigneur permit à Abraham d’être informé à l’avance du jugement contre Sodome souligne son rôle spécial dans le plan de Dieu et l’issue certaine de l’alliance: de nombreux descendants et une grande bénédiction.
18 Abraham deviendra certainement une nation grande et puissante, et en lui seront bénies toutes les nations de la terre.

19 Car je l’ai choisi, afin qu’il ordonne à ses fils et à sa maison après lui de garder la voie de l’Éternel, en pratiquant la droiture et la justice, et qu’ainsi l’Éternel accomplisse en faveur d’Abraham les promesses qu’il lui a faites …
je l’ai choisi, afin qu’il ordonne. Une expression de la confiance divine qui est aussi un hommage à la fidélité, à l’obéissance et à la constance.
GENESIS 18 : 1 à 19 + NOTES TO JOHN MACARTHUR
1 ¶ And the LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day.
The Lord appeared to him. Another case of Theophany, though Abraham may not be noticed right away that one of the visitors he humbly bowed, greeted: and accompanied her - (v #Ge (vv #Ge 18 2-8.). 18: 16) was the Lord.
2 He looked and looked, and, lo, three men stood near him. When he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the earth.
3 And he said, Lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass, I pray thee, from thy servant.
Lord. Term may be used first as a simple salutation. Later, in raccompagnant visitors, Abraham used this title knowingly, aware that he was speaking to the sovereign Lord, to his master (vv #Ge. 18: 22 #Ge 18: 30-32). The visitor was himself recognized as "the Lord" (v #Ge. 18: 14).
4 Let a little water, and wash your feet; and rest under this tree.
5 I will fetch a morsel of bread, to strengthen your heart; after which, you go your way, because that is why you have come to your servant. They said, Do as you have said.
6 And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said quickly three measures of fine flour, knead it, and make cakes.
7 And Abraham ran to the herd, and fetched a calf tender and good, and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare.
8 And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them. He stood himself with them under the tree. And they ate.
9 ¶ Then said they unto him, Where is Sarah your wife? He replied: It is there, in the tent.
18: 9-13 Despite comments that clearly remembered God's promise to Abraham, Sara reacts with the same disbelief that her husband (cf. #Ge 17: 17). She did not think a miracle, but to divine providence at work in the normal course of life, convinced that their age they had clearly been impossible to have children.
10 One of them said: I will return to you at the same time; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him.

11 Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age and Sara could no longer hope to have children.
12 Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure? My lord being old also.
13 And the Lord said to Abraham, Why Does Sara laughed, saying, Do I really have a child, which am old?
14 Is there nothing that is surprising from the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to thee at this same time; and Sarah shall have a son.
18: 14-15 A rhetorical question ("? Will he thing too hard ...") and a divine declaration ("At the appointed time ..."), combined with the obvious knowledge of his thoughts ("She laughs itself "), made aware Sara his poor perception of God's work.
15 Sara denied, saying: I did not laugh. For she was afraid. But he said, Nay, you laughed.
16 ¶ And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom. Abraham went with them to accompany them.
17 Then the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? ...
18: 17-18 I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? The reason why the Lord allowed Abraham to be informed in advance of the judgment against Sodom emphasizes its special role in God's plan and certain outcome of the covenant: many descendants and a great blessing.
18 Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and be blessed in him all the nations of the earth.

19 For I know him, that he will command his son and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham the promises he made to her ...
I chose him, that he will command. An expression of God's confidence is also a tribute to the loyalty, obedience and consistency.
