1 ¶ Les deux anges arrivèrent à Sodome sur le soir ; et Lot était assis à la porte de Sodome. Quand Lot les vit, il se leva pour aller au-devant d’eux, et se prosterna la face contre terre.
deux anges. Ceux qui avaient rendu visite à Abraham avec Dieu (#Ge 18: 22). Ils avaient pris une forme humaine (au v. 10 ils sont appelés « hommes »).
Lot était assis à la porte. Comme les fonctionnaires de la ville et autres citoyens importants géraient les affaires de la communauté à la porte, Lot y participait en tant que juge (v. #Ge 19: 9).
2 Puis il dit : Voici, mes seigneurs, entrez, je vous prie, dans la maison de votre serviteur, et passez-y la nuit ; lavez-vous les pieds ; vous vous lèverez de bon matin, et vous poursuivrez votre route. Non, répondirent-ils, nous passerons la nuit dans la rue.
entrez … dans la maison de votre serviteur. Lot invita les anges (vv. #Ge 19:1-3) à accepter son hospitalité non par pure courtoisie, mais pour les protéger de la perversité connue des Sodomites (cf. v. #Ge 19: 8: « puisqu’ils sont venus »).
3 Mais Lot les pressa tellement qu’ils vinrent chez lui et entrèrent dans sa maison. Il leur donna un festin, et fit cuire des pains sans levain. Et ils mangèrent.
Lot les pressa tellement. Le souci de Lot pour ces étrangers était tel qu’il ne pouvait tolérer qu’ils passent la nuit dans la rue.
4 ¶ Ils n’étaient pas encore couchés que les gens de la ville, les gens de Sodome, entourèrent la maison, depuis les enfants jusqu’aux vieillards ; toute la population était accourue.
les gens de la ville … toute la population. Le nombre impressionnant d’hommes lascifs entourant bruyamment la maison de Lot et l’étendue de la perversion morale à Sodome sont mis en évidence par les termes utilisés (« enfants jusqu’aux vieillards; toute la population ») et le but de la demande (v. #Ge 19: 5 « que nous les connaissions »). Tout en admettant une possible exagération légitime dans cet emploi de « toute », il nous faut reconnaître que c’était effectivement une ville caractérisée par la méchanceté!
5 Ils appelèrent Lot, et lui dirent: Où sont les hommes qui sont entrés chez toi cette nuit ? Fais-les sortir vers nous, pour que nous les connaissions.
les connaissions. Ils voulaient avoir des relations homosexuelles avec les visiteurs. L’opinion de Dieu quant à ce comportement devint claire lorsqu’il détruisit la ville (vv. #Ge 19:23-29). Cf. #Lé 18: 22, #Lé 18: 29 ; #Lé 20: 13 ; #Ro 1:27 ; #1Co 6:10 ; #1Ti 1:10 où les pratiques homosexuelles sont interdites et condamnées par Dieu.
6 Lot sortit vers eux à l’entrée de la maison, et ferma la porte derrière lui.
19:6-8 La réponse de Lot trahit la tension qui existait dans son éthique; son offre de satisfaire leur désir sexuel contredit son appel à ne pas faire le mal. Son attitude met en évidence la contradiction dans laquelle il vivait à Sodome (cf. #2P 2:6-8).
7 Et il dit : Mes frères, je vous prie, ne faites pas le mal !
8 Voici, j’ai deux filles qui n’ont point connu d’homme ; je vous les amènerai dehors, et vous leur ferez ce qu’il vous plaira. Seulement, ne faites rien à ces hommes puisqu’ils sont venus à l’ombre de mon toit.
vous leur ferez ce qu’il vous plaira. Les contraintes de l’hospitalité orientale et l’objectif même de son invitation (vv. #Ge 19:2-3) obligèrent Lot à leur offrir ses filles pour permettre un comportement moins déviant, même s’il était aussi mauvais, et pour protéger ses invités. Cette tentative insensée montre que, tout en étant juste aux yeux de Dieu (#2P 2:7-8), Lot avait préféré s’accommoder de certains péchés et d’une vie de foi peu solide au lieu de quitter Sodome. Mais Dieu lui manifesta sa grâce car, par la foi, il était juste à ses yeux.
9 Ils dirent : Retire-toi ! Ils dirent encore : Celui-ci est venu comme étranger, et il veut faire le juge ! Eh bien, nous te ferons pis qu’à eux. Et, pressant Lot avec violence, ils s’avancèrent pour briser la porte.

pressant Lot avec violence. L’homosexualité est porteuse de pulsions irrésistibles qui défient toute restriction. Même aveuglés, ils essayèrent encore de satisfaire leurs désirs (v. #Ge 19: 11).
10 Les hommes étendirent la main, firent rentrer Lot vers eux dans la maison, et fermèrent la porte.
19:10-11 Lot était désormais protégé par ceux qu’il avait précédemment cherché à protéger!
11 Et ils frappèrent d’aveuglement les gens qui étaient à l’entrée de la maison, depuis le plus petit jusqu’au plus grand, de sorte qu’ils se donnèrent une peine inutile pour trouver la porte.
12 ¶ Les hommes dirent à Lot : Qui as-tu encore ici ? Gendres, fils et filles, et tout ce qui t’appartient dans la ville, fais-les sortir de ce lieu.
13 Car nous allons détruire ce lieu, parce que le cri contre ses habitants est grand devant l’Éternel. L’Éternel nous a envoyés pour le détruire.
L’Éternel nous a envoyés pour le détruire. La méchanceté de la ville ayant été confirmée de façon saisissante (vv. #Ge 19:4-11), le jugement divin était la seule issue, mais la famille de Lot put y échapper (vv. #Ge 19:12-13). Cf. #Jude 7.
14 Lot sortit, et parla à ses gendres qui avaient pris ses filles : Levez-vous, dit-il, sortez de ce lieu ; car l’Éternel va détruire la ville. Mais, aux yeux de ses gendres, il parut plaisanter.
il parut plaisanter. L’avertissement donné par Lot quant au jugement à venir tombait dans la catégorie des plaisanteries aux yeux de ses beaux-fils (ou peut-être simples fiancés de ses filles).
15 ¶ Dès l’aube du jour, les anges insistèrent auprès de Lot, en disant: Lève-toi, prends ta femme et tes deux filles qui se trouvent ici, de peur que tu ne périsses dans la ruine de la ville.
16 Et comme il tardait, les hommes le saisirent par la main, lui, sa femme et ses deux filles, car l’Éternel voulait l’épargner ; ils l’emmenèrent, et le laissèrent hors de la ville.
l’Éternel voulait l’épargner. C’est la raison pour laquelle les anges, face à l’hésitation apparente de Lot (« il tardait »), le forcèrent à partir et l’escortèrent personnellement jusqu’à l’extérieur de la ville. Ailleurs, cette raison est mise en relation avec le fait que Dieu se souvint d’Abraham (v. #Ge 19: 29).

¶ 1 The two angels came to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom. Lot saw them, he rose up to meet them, and bowed himself face against the ground.
two angels. Those who had visited Abraham with God (#Ge 18: 22). They had taken a human form (in v. 10 they are called "men").
Lot sat in the gate. As the city officials and other prominent citizens were managing community affairs at the door, Lot was participating as a judge (v #Ge. 19: 9).
2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, I pray you, into your servant's house and spend the night; wash your feet; you get up early, and go on your way. No, they said, we spend the night in the street.
... enter into the house of your servant. Lot invited the angels (vv #Ge. 19: 1-3) to accept his hospitality not by pure courtesy, but to protect the known depravity of the Sodomites (see #Ge v. 19: 8: "since they are come ").
3 And he pressed so they turned aside to him and entered his house. He made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread. And they ate.
Lot pressed them so much. The concern for these foreign Lot was such that he could not tolerate that they spend the night in the street.
4 ¶ They did not lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young; all the people from every quarter.
the people of the city ... the entire population. The impressive number of lascivious men loudly surrounding Lot's house and the extent of moral perversion of Sodom are identified by the words used ("old and young, all the people") and the purpose of the request (v #Ge. 19: 5, "that we may know"). While admitting a possible legitimate exaggeration in this use of "any", we need to recognize that this was indeed a city characterized by wickedness!
5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? Bring them out unto us, that we may know.
know them. They wanted to have homosexual relations with visitors. The view of God as to what behavior became clear when he destroyed the city (vv #Ge. 19: 23-29). # Cf. Lev 18: 22 # Lev 18: 29; # Lev 20: 13; #Ro 1:27; # 1 Corinthians 6:10; # 1Ti 1:10 where homosexual acts are forbidden and condemned by God.
6 Lot went out at the door of the house and closed the door behind him.
19: 6-8 Lot's response betrays the tension that existed in his ethics; its offer to satisfy their sexual desire contradicted his call not to do evil. His attitude highlights the contradiction in which he was living in Sodom (see # 2P 2: 6-8).
7 And he said, My brothers, I beg you, do not do evil!
8 Behold, I have two daughters which have not known man; I will bring out now, and do to them as you please. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shadow of my roof.
do to them as you please. The constraints of Eastern hospitality and the very purpose of the invitation (vv #Ge 19: 2-3.) Lot obliged to offer them his daughters to allow less deviant behavior, even if it was as bad, and protect its guests. This foolish attempt shows that, while being right in the eyes of God (# 2P 2: 7-8), Lot had chosen to accommodate certain sins and a very solid faith life instead of leaving Sodom. But God showed his grace because through faith, he was just in his eyes.
9 And they said, Stand back! They said, This one came in to sojourn, and he wants to play the judge! Well, we will treat you worse than them. And they pressed Lot, they drew near to break the door.
he wants the judge. Their accusation suggests that Lot had tried to lecture them before, but his remarks were not tolerated.
Lot pressing violently. Homosexuality carries irresistible impulses that defy restrictions. Even blinded, they still tried to satisfy their desires (v #Ge. 19: 11).
10 The men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut the door.
19: 10-11 Lot was now protected by those he had previously sought to protect!
11 And they struck with blindness the men who were at the entrance of the house, from the least to the greatest, so that they wearied themselves to find the door.
12 ¶ And the men said to Lot, Hast thou here? In-law, son and daughters, and all that thou hast in the city, bring them out of that place.
13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry against them is waxen great before the Lord. The Lord has sent us to destroy it.
The Lord has sent us to destroy it. The wickedness of the city was strikingly confirmed (vv #Ge. 19: 4-11), God's judgment was the only way, but Lot's family was able to escape it (vv #Ge 19: 12-13.) . See #Jude 7.
14 Lot went out and spoke to his sons in law, which married his daughters: Arise, he said, out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But in the eyes of his sons in law, he appeared joking.
he seemed joking. The warning by Lot about the coming judgment fell into the category of jokes in the eyes of his step-son (or perhaps simple fiancés of his daughters).
15 ¶ And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the iniquity of the city.
16 And while he lingered, the men seized him by the hand, he, his wife and two daughters, because the Lord being merciful to him; they took him, and set him without the city.
the LORD being merciful to him. This is why the angels at the apparent reluctance of Lot ("longed") forced him to go and personally escorted him to the outside of the city. Moreover, this result is related with the fact that God remembered Abraham (v #Ge. 19: 29).
