17 Dieu entendit la voix de l’enfant ; et l’ange de Dieu appela du ciel Agar, et lui dit : Qu’as-tu, Agar ? Ne crains point, car Dieu a entendu la voix de l’enfant dans le lieu où il est.
Dieu entendit la voix de l’enfant. Lorsque le désespoir transforma le ton railleur de l’enfant en un cri d’angoisse, probablement provoqué par la soif (vv. #Ge 21:15-16), Dieu l’entendit, tout comme il avait entendu les cris d’Agar des années auparavant (#Ge 16: 11). Agar dut se souvenir de la promesse faite à Abraham à propos de son fils (#Ge 17: 20).
ange de Dieu. La même personne que l’ange de l’Éternel.
18 Lève-toi, prends l’enfant, saisis-le de ta main ; car je ferai de lui une grande nation.
19 Et Dieu lui ouvrit les yeux, et elle vit un puits d’eau ; elle alla remplir d’eau l’outre, et donna à boire à l’enfant.
20 Dieu fut avec l’enfant, qui grandit, habita dans le désert, et devint tireur d’arc.
21 Il habita dans le désert de Paran, et sa mère lui prit une femme du pays d’Égypte.
désert de Paran. Situé dans la partie nord-est de la péninsule du Sinaï, appelée l’Arabie.
22 ¶ En ce temps-là, Abimélec, accompagné de Picol, chef de son armée, parla ainsi à Abraham : Dieu est avec toi dans tout ce que tu fais.
21:22-34 Le traité officiellement conclu entre Abimélec et Abraham garantissait le contrôle et le partage des ressources en eau, qui étaient limitées, de la région et assurait aussi au roi un traitement juste et équitable de la part du patriarche dans les années à venir.
23 Jure-moi maintenant ici, par le nom de Dieu, que tu ne tromperas ni moi, ni mes enfants, ni mes petits-enfants, et que tu auras pour moi et le pays où tu séjournes la même bienveillance que j’ai eue pour toi.
24 Abraham dit : Je le jurerai.
25 Mais Abraham fit des reproches à Abimélec, au sujet d’un puits d’eau, dont s’étaient emparés de force les serviteurs d’Abimélec.
26 Abimélec répondit : J’ignore qui a fait cette chose-là ; tu ne m’en as point informé, et moi, je ne l’apprends qu’aujourd’hui.
27 Et Abraham prit des brebis et des bœufs, qu’il donna à Abimélec ; et ils firent tous deux alliance.
28 Abraham mit à part sept jeunes brebis.
29 Et Abimélec dit à Abraham : Qu’est-ce que ces sept jeunes brebis, que tu as mises à part ?
30 Il répondit : Tu accepteras de ma main ces sept brebis, afin que cela me serve de témoignage que j’ai creusé ce puits.
31 C’est pourquoi on appelle ce lieu Beer-Schéba ; car c’est là qu’ils jurèrent l’un et l’autre.
Beer-Schéba. Situé à environ 70 km au sud-ouest de Jérusalem.
32 Ils firent donc alliance à Beer-Schéba. Après quoi, Abimélec se leva, avec Picol, chef de son armée ; et ils retournèrent au pays des Philistins.
au pays des Philistins. Abraham entra en contact avec les premières migrations de commerçants
33 ¶ Abraham planta des tamaris à Beer-Schéba ; et là il invoqua le nom de l’Éternel, Dieu de l’éternité.
tamaris. Cet arbre servait à rappeler le traité conclu entre deux contemporains bien connus et à indiquer l’un des lieux de culte d’Abraham.
Tamarix (les tamaris ou tamarix) est un genre d'arbustes ou de petits arbres qui appartient à la famille des Tamaricacées. Il est fréquent dans les régions méditerranéennes, où il peut être spontané ou cultivé. Ses fleurs printanières (mars-avril) forment de nombreux chatons de couleur rose ou blanchâtre. Ses petites feuilles alternes et écailleuses sont semblables à celles de certains conifères. Le fruit est une petite capsule triangulaire.
l’Éternel, Dieu de l’éternité. Un nom divin approprié qui soulignait à Abraham la nature immuable et éternelle de l’alliance que Dieu avait conclue avec lui, en dépit du fait qu’il n’était encore qu’un résident étranger dans le pays (cf. #Ge 23: 4).
34 Abraham séjourna longtemps dans le pays des Philistins.

17 God heard the voice of the child; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said, What ails you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the child in the place where he is.
God heard the voice of the child. When despair turned the mocking tone of the child in a cry of anguish, probably caused by thirst (#Ge vv. 21: 15-16), God heard, as he heard the cries of Hagar years ago (#Ge 16: 11). Hagar had to remember the promise made to Abraham about his son (#Ge 17: 20).
angel of God. The same person as the angel of the LORD.
18 Arise, take the child, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation.
19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; she went and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.
20 God was with the child grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.
21 And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took him a wife from Egypt.
wilderness of Paran. Located in the northeastern part of the Sinai Peninsula, called Arabia.
22 ¶ At that time, that Abimelech and Phicol the captain of his host spake unto Abraham, God is with you in everything you do.
21: 22-34 The treaty formally concluded between Abimelech and Abraham guaranteed the control and sharing of water resources, which were limited in the region and also assured the king a just and fair treatment from the patriarch in the years come over.
23 Swear now here, by the name of God, you did deceive me or my children or my grandchildren, and hast for me and the country where you sojourn to the kindness that I had for you.
24 Abraham said, I will swear.
25 And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of a well of water, which had seized power the servants of Abimelech.
26 Abimelech said, I do not know who has done this thing; thou hast thou tell me, and I did learn today.
27 And Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech; and they two made a covenant.
28 Abraham set seven ewe lambs.
29 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What mean these seven ewe lambs which thou hast set by themselves?
30 He answered shalt thou take of my hand these seven sheep, to let it be a witness for me that I dug this well.
31 Wherefore he called that place Beersheba; because there they sware both.
Beersheba. Located about 70 km south-west of Jerusalem.
32 So they made a covenant at Beersheba. Then Abimelech rose up with Phicol the commander of his army; and returned to the land of the Philistines.
the land of the Philistines. Abraham came into contact with the first migrations traders
33 ¶ And Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD God of eternity.
tamarisk. This tree was used to recall the treaty between two well-known contemporary and indicate one of Abraham's places of worship.
Tamarix (tamarisk or tamarisk) is a genus of shrubs or small trees that belongs to the family of Tamaricaceae. It is common in the Mediterranean, where it can be spontaneous or cultivated. Its spring flowers (March-April) form many pink or whitish kittens. Its small scale leaves alternate and are similar to those of some conifers. The fruit is a small triangular capsule.
the LORD God of eternity. An appropriate divine name to Abraham which highlighted the immutable and eternal nature of the covenant God had made with him, despite the fact that he was still a foreign resident in the country (see #Ge 23: 4).
34 Abraham sojourned in the land of the Philistines.
