1 ¶ Après ces choses, Dieu mit Abraham à l’épreuve, et lui dit : Abraham ! Et il répondit : Me voici !
Dieu mit Abraham à l’épreuve. Il ne s’agissait pas d’une tentation; Dieu voulait plutôt sonder le cœur d’Abraham (cf. #Ja 1:2-4, #Ja 1:12-18).
2 Dieu dit : Prends ton fils, ton unique, celui que tu aimes, Isaac ; va-t’en au pays de Morija, et là offre-le en holocauste sur l’une des montagnes que je te dirai.
Prends ton fils … offre-le. Cet ordre renversant déclencha une épreuve particulière pour Abraham: le sacrifice de son fils unique (répété 3 fois par Dieu, vv. 2, 12, 16). Il allait devoir tuer son fils (âgé de plus de 20 ans) et, avec cela, mettre fin à la promesse de l’alliance. Un tel acte semblait irrationnel, pourtant Abraham obéit (v. #Ge 22: 3).
Morija. Traditionnellement associé à Jérusalem et à l’endroit où le temple de Salomon fut construit plus tard (cf. #2Ch 3:1).
3 ¶ Abraham se leva de bon matin, sella son âne, et prit avec lui deux serviteurs et son fils Isaac. Il fendit du bois pour l’holocauste, et partit pour aller au lieu que Dieu lui avait dit.
4 Le troisième jour, Abraham, levant les yeux, vit le lieu de loin.
Le troisième jour. Sans hésitation et sans retard, Abraham se leva tôt (v. #Ge 22: 3) pour le voyage de trois jours de Beer-Schéba à Morija, l’une des montagnes de la région de Jérusalem.
5 Et Abraham dit à ses serviteurs : Restez ici avec l’âne ; moi et le jeune homme, nous irons jusque-là pour adorer, et nous reviendrons auprès de vous.

Le voyage lui avait amplement laissé le temps de réfléchir aux ordres de Dieu, mais sans faiblir ni mettre en doute la moralité du sacrifice humain ou les buts de Dieu, Abraham, plein de confiance, assura ses serviteurs de leur retour et poursuivit avec le nécessaire pour le sacrifice (v. #Ge 22: 6). D’après #Hé 11:17-19, il était si convaincu de la permanence de la promesse de Dieu qu’il croyait que, si Isaac mourait, Dieu le ressusciterait ou lui fournirait un substitut (v. #Ge 22: 8).
6 Abraham prit le bois pour l’holocauste, le chargea sur son fils Isaac, et porta dans sa main le feu et le couteau. Et ils marchèrent tous deux ensemble.
7 Alors Isaac, parlant à Abraham, son père, dit : Mon père ! Et il répondit: Me voici, mon fils ! Isaac reprit : Voici le feu et le bois ; mais où est l’agneau pour l’holocauste ?
8 Abraham répondit : Mon fils, Dieu se pourvoira lui-même de l’agneau pour l’holocauste. Et ils marchèrent tous deux ensemble.
9 Lorsqu’ils furent arrivés au lieu que Dieu lui avait dit, Abraham y éleva un autel, et rangea le bois. Il lia son fils Isaac, et le mit sur l’autel, par-dessus le bois.
22:9-10 Rien n’aurait pu mettre plus en relief la confiance d’Abraham en Dieu que ses préparatifs pour tuer son fils unique. Cf. #Hé 11:17-19.
10 Puis Abraham étendit la main, et prit le couteau, pour égorger son fils.
11 ¶ Alors l’ange de l’Éternel l’appela des cieux, et dit : Abraham ! Abraham ! Et il répondit : Me voici !
12 L’ange dit : N’avance pas ta main sur l’enfant, et ne lui fais rien ; car je sais maintenant que tu crains Dieu, et que tu ne m’as pas refusé ton fils, ton unique.
je sais maintenant. Abraham réussit le test (v. #Ge 22: 1). Il fit preuve du genre de foi auquel Dieu répond par la justification.
13 Abraham leva les yeux, et vit derrière lui un bélier retenu dans un buisson par les cornes ; et Abraham alla prendre le bélier, et l’offrit en holocauste à la place de son fils.
à la place de son fils. La notion d’expiation substitutive est ainsi introduite; elle s’accomplira à la mort de Christ (#Esa 53:4-6 ; #Jn 1:29 ; #2Co 5:21).
14 Abraham donna à ce lieu le nom de Jehova-Jiré. C’est pourquoi l’on dit aujourd’hui : A la montagne de l’Éternel il sera pourvu.

1 ¶ After these things, God put Abraham to the test, and said, Abraham! And he said, Here am I;
God put Abraham to the test. It was not a question of a temptation; God would rather probe the heart of Abraham (cf. #Ja 1: 2-4, #Ja 1: 12-18).
2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only, whom you love, Isaac; get thee into the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will tell you.
Take your son ... offer him. This stunning order unleashed a particular test for Abraham to sacrifice his only son (repeated 3 times by God, vv 2, 12, 16.). He was going to kill his son (aged over 20 years) and, with that, to end the covenant promise. Such an act seemed irrational, yet Abraham obeyed (v #Ge. 22: 3).
Moriah. Traditionally associated with Jerusalem where Solomon's temple was built later (see # 2Ch 3: 1).
3 ¶ And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took with him two servants and his son Isaac. He split the wood for the burnt offering, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
4 On the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off.
On the third day. Without hesitation and without delay, Abraham rose early (#Ge v. 22: 3) for the three-day trip from Beersheba to Moriah, one of the mountains in the area of Jerusalem.
5 And Abraham said to his servants, Stay here with the donkey; I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
I and the lad will go ... we will return. The trip had left him ample time to reflect on God's orders, but not weak or question the morality of human sacrifice or purposes of God, Abraham, full of confidence, assured his servants to return and continued with the necessary for sacrifice (v #Ge. 22: 6). According # Heb 11: 17-19, he was so convinced of the permanence of God's promise that he believed that if Isaac died, God would raise him or her provide a substitute (v #Ge. 22: 8) .
6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering on Isaac his son, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. And they went both together.
7 Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, My father! And he said, Here am I, my son! He said, Behold the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?
8 Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering. And they went both together.
9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
22: 9-10 Nothing could have more in relief of Abraham's trust in God that his preparations to kill his only son. # Cf. Heb 11: 17-19.
10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
11 ¶ And the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, Abraham! Abraham! And he said, Here am I;
12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only.
I know now. Abraham passes the test (v #Ge. 22: 1). He showed the kind of faith which God responds with justification.
13 Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns; Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son.
instead of his son. The concept of substitutionary atonement is thus introduced; it will be fulfilled at the death of Christ (#Esa 53: 4-6; #Jn 1:29; 2 Cor 5:21 #).
14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-Jireh. That is why we say today: In the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.
