GENÈSE 45 : 1 À 28 + ***
1 ¶ Joseph ne pouvait plus se contenir devant tous ceux qui l’entouraient. Il s’écria : Faites sortir tout le monde. Et il ne resta personne avec Joseph, quand il se fit connaître à ses frères.
45:1-8 Stupéfaits d’apprendre qui se trouvait effectivement en face d’eux, les frères entendirent alors Joseph leur exposer un chef-d’œuvre de reconnaissance à Dieu et de soumission à sa souveraineté c’est-à-dire à son règne providentiel - sur les circonstances de la vie, à la fois bonnes et mauvaises.
2 Il éleva la voix, en pleurant. Les Égyptiens l’entendirent, et la maison de Pharaon l’entendit.
3 Joseph dit à ses frères : Je suis Joseph ! Mon père vit-il encore ? Mais ses frères ne purent lui répondre, car ils étaient troublés en sa présence.
4 Joseph dit à ses frères : Approchez-vous de moi. Et ils s’approchèrent. Il dit : Je suis Joseph, votre frère, que vous avez vendu pour être mené en Égypte.
5 Maintenant, ne vous affligez pas, et ne soyez pas fâchés de m’avoir vendu pour être conduit ici, car c’est pour vous sauver la vie que Dieu m’a envoyé devant vous.
6 Voilà deux ans que la famine est dans le pays ; et pendant cinq années encore, il n’y aura ni labour, ni moisson.
Voilà deux ans. Joseph devait avoir 39 ans. Il n’avait pas revu ses frères depuis 22 ans (#Ge 37:2).
7 Dieu m’a envoyé devant vous pour vous faire subsister dans le pays, et pour vous faire vivre par une grande délivrance.
pour vous faire subsister. Ces paroles indiquent que Joseph avait compris l’alliance de Dieu avec Abraham comme la promesse d’une nation (cf. ch. #Ge 12 ; #Ge 15 ; #Ge 17).
8 Ce n’est donc pas vous qui m’avez envoyé ici, mais c’est Dieu ; il m’a établi père de Pharaon, maître de toute sa maison, et gouverneur de tout le pays d’Égypte.
père de Pharaon. Ce titre donné aux premiers ministres désignait un homme qui, sans lien de parenté avec le Pharaon, occupait néanmoins une fonction importante et un poste élevé. Dans son cas, Joseph était « seigneur de toute l’Égypte ». Un nouveau Pharaon plus jeune régnait alors, Senousret III, 1878-1841 av. J.-C.
9 Hâtez-vous de remonter auprès de mon père, et vous lui direz : Ainsi a parlé ton fils Joseph : Dieu m’a établi seigneur de toute l’Égypte ; descends vers moi, ne tarde pas !
10 Tu habiteras dans le pays de Gosen, et tu seras près de moi, toi, tes fils, et les fils de tes fils, tes brebis et tes bœufs, et tout ce qui est à toi.
pays de Gosen. Cette région, située au nord-est du delta égyptien, convenait parfaitement pour l’élevage du bétail de Jacob (cf. #Ge 47:27 ; #Ge 50:8). 400 ans plus tard, au moment de l’exode, les Juifs y vivraient encore (cf. #Ex 8:18 ; #Ex 9:26).
11 Là, je te nourrirai, car il y aura encore cinq années de famine ; et ainsi tu ne périras point, toi, ta maison, et tout ce qui est à toi.
12 Vous voyez de vos yeux, et mon frère Benjamin voit de ses yeux que c’est moi-même qui vous parle.
13 Racontez à mon père toute ma gloire en Égypte, et tout ce que vous avez vu ; et vous ferez descendre ici mon père au plus tôt.
14 Il se jeta au cou de Benjamin, son frère, et pleura ; et Benjamin pleura sur son cou.
45:14-15 Les sentiments forts qui accompagnèrent cette réconciliation montraient clairement que Joseph ne leur en voulait pas et qu’il leur avait pardonné, ce qui prouvait sa maturité spirituelle. Il y avait 22 ans que ses frères l’avaient vendu comme esclave.
15 Il embrassa aussi tous ses frères, en pleurant. Après quoi, ses frères s’entretinrent avec lui.
16 ¶ Le bruit se répandit dans la maison de Pharaon que les frères de Joseph étaient arrivés : ce qui fut agréable à Pharaon et à ses serviteurs.
ce qui fut agréable à Pharaon. Le sceau d’approbation final pour l’immigration de la famille de Joseph en Égypte vint, de manière inattendue, du Pharaon lui-même (vv. #Ge 45:17-20).
17 Pharaon dit à Joseph : Dis à tes frères : Faites ceci. Chargez vos bêtes, et partez pour le pays de Canaan ;
18 prenez votre père et vos familles, et venez auprès de moi. Je vous donnerai ce qu’il y a de meilleur au pays d’Égypte, et vous mangerez la graisse du pays.
19 Tu as ordre de leur dire : Faites ceci. Prenez dans le pays d’Égypte des chars pour vos enfants et pour vos femmes ; amenez votre père, et venez.
20 Ne regrettez point ce que vous laisserez, car ce qu’il y a de meilleur dans tout le pays d’Égypte sera pour vous.
21 Les fils d’Israël firent ainsi. Joseph leur donna des chars, selon l’ordre de Pharaon ; il leur donna aussi des provisions pour la route.
22 Il leur donna à tous des vêtements de rechange, et il donna à Benjamin trois cents sicles d’argent et cinq vêtements de rechange.
23 Il envoya à son père dix ânes chargés de ce qu’il y avait de meilleur en Égypte, et dix ânesses chargées de blé, de pain et de vivres, pour son père pendant le voyage.
24 Puis il congédia ses frères, qui partirent ; et il leur dit : Ne vous querellez pas en chemin.
querellez pas en chemin. Une mise en garde nécessaire car ils devaient se préparer à confesser leur péché à leur père.
25 ¶ Ils remontèrent de l’Égypte, et ils arrivèrent dans le pays de Canaan, auprès de Jacob, leur père.
26 Ils lui dirent : Joseph vit encore, et même c’est lui qui gouverne tout le pays d’Égypte. Mais le cœur de Jacob resta froid, parce qu’il ne les croyait pas.
le cœur de Jacob resta froid. La nouvelle était aussi stupéfiante pour Jacob qu’elle l’avait été pour ses fils (v. #Ge 45:3). Même si le récit ne le précise pas, ce fut certainement pour eux l’occasion de lui confesser l’attitude criminelle dont ils avaient fait preuve.
27 Ils lui rapportèrent toutes les paroles que Joseph leur avait dites. Il vit les chars que Joseph avait envoyés pour le transporter. C’est alors que l’esprit de Jacob, leur père, se ranima ;
28 et Israël dit : C’est assez ! Joseph, mon fils, vit encore ! J’irai, et je le verrai avant que je meure.

1 ¶ Joseph could not refrain himself before all those around him. He exclaimed, Bring out everyone. And there stood no man with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers.
45: 1-8 Stunned to learn that actually was in front of them, so the brothers Joseph heard them expose a masterpiece of gratitude to God and submission to its sovereignty that is to say, his providential reign - the circumstances of life, both good and bad.
2 He raised his voice and wept. The Egyptians heard, and the house of Pharaoh heard.
3 Joseph said to his brothers, I am Joseph! Is my father still alive? But his brothers could not answer him; for they were troubled at his presence.
4 Joseph said to his brothers, Come near to me. And they came near. He said: I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold into Egypt.
5 Now do not be grieved, and be not angry with yourselves for selling me hither, for it was to save lives that God sent me before you.
6 For these two years the famine has been in the country; and yet five years, there will be neither plowing nor harvest.
Two years ago. Joseph was to take 39 years. He had not seen his brother for 22 years (#Ge 37: 2).
7 God sent me before you to preserve you in the country, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.
to preserve you. These words indicate that Joseph understood God's covenant with Abraham as the promise of a nation (cf. #Ge 12;. #Ge 15; #Ge 17).
8 So it was not you who sent me here, but God; he made me a father to Pharaoh, lord of all his house, and ruler over all the land of Egypt.
father to Pharaoh. The title given to the first ministers referred to a man who, without kinship with the Pharaoh, nevertheless had an important function and a high position. In his case, Joseph was "lord of all Egypt." A new young Pharaoh reigned, Senusret III, 1878-1841 BC. AD
9 Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt; come down unto me, tarry not:
10 You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and thou shalt be near me, thou, and thy son, and the son of your son, your flocks and herds, and all that is yours.
land of Goshen. This region, located northeast of the Egyptian delta, suited for rearing cattle Jacob (cf. #Ge 47:27; #Ge 50: 8). 400 years later, at the time of the Exodus, the Jews still live there (cf. #Ex 8:18; #Ex 9:26).
11 There I will feed you, for there will be five more years of famine; and so you shall not perish, you, your house, and all that is yours.
12 You can see for yourselves, and my brother Benjamin, his eyes it's myself speaking.
13 tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and all you have seen; and you will make my father down here at the earliest.
14 He threw himself Benjamin's neck, his brother, and wept; and Benjamin wept on his neck.
45: 14-15 The strong feelings that accompanied reconciliation clearly showed that Joseph did not want them and had forgiven them, which proved his spiritual maturity. There was the 22 years that his brothers had sold him into slavery.
15 He kissed all his brothers and wept. After that, his brothers talked with him.
¶ 16 The rumor spread in Pharaoh's house that Joseph's brothers had come: and it pleased Pharaoh and his servants.
that pleased Pharaoh. The final seal of approval for the immigration of Joseph's family came to Egypt, unexpectedly, the Pharaoh himself (vv #Ge. 45: 17-20).
17 Pharaoh said to Joseph, Say to your brothers, 'Do this. Load your beasts, and go to the land of Canaan;
18 And take your father and your households, and come unto me. I will give you what is there good of the land of Egypt, and ye shall eat the fat of the land.
19 You have to say about them: Do this. Take in the land of Egypt tanks for your children and your wives; bring your father, and come.
20 Also regard not your stuff; because what there is best in all the land of Egypt is yours.
21 The son of Israel did so. Joseph gave them wagons, according to the command of Pharaoh; and gave them provisions for the journey.
22 He gave them all a change of clothes, and to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver and five changes of clothing.
23 He sent his father ten donkeys loaded with what was best in Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread and meat for his father by the way.
24 Then he sent his brothers, they departed and he said to them, Do not quarrel on the way.
not quarrel on the way. A warning is required because they had to be prepared to confess their sins to their father.
25 ¶ And they went up from Egypt, and came into the land of Canaan to their father Jacob.
26 They said to him, Joseph is still alive, and even he is governor over all the land of Egypt. But Jacob's heart fainted, for he did not believe them.
Jacob's heart remained cold. The news was also amazing for Jacob as it had been for his son (v #Ge. 45: 3). Even if the story does not say, it was certainly an opportunity for them to confess the criminal attitude they had shown.
27 And they told him all the words which Joseph had said. He saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to carry. It was then that the spirit of Jacob their father revived;
28 and Israel said, It is enough; Joseph my son is still alive I will go and see him before I die.
