JÉRÉMIE 21 : 1 à 14 *** +
1 ¶ La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de l’Éternel, lorsque le roi Sédécias lui envoya Paschhur, fils de Malkija, et Sophonie, fils de Maaséja, le sacrificateur, pour lui dire:
21.1-10 Neuvième message de Jérémie : l’Adversaire divin, l’alternative désespérée
Cet oracle est une nouvelle annonce de la chute de Jérusalem. Dans 37.3-10 nous trouvons un récit analogue, qui n’est cependant pas un doublet. Il relate comment les Égyptiens ont levé temporairement le siège de la ville, puis sont revenus l’investir avec plus d’acharnement. Ce message-ci date de la phase initiale du siège.
1,2 Sédécias envoie un autre dignitaire du nom de Paschhur pour supplier Jérémie d’intercéder.
2 Consulte pour nous l’Éternel ; car Nébucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, nous fait la guerre ; peut-être l’Éternel fera-t-il en notre faveur quelqu’un de ses miracles, afin qu’il s’éloigne de nous.
3 Jérémie leur répondit : Vous direz à Sédécias:
4 Ainsi parle l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël : Voici, je vais détourner les armes de guerre qui sont dans vos mains, et avec lesquelles vous combattez en dehors des murailles le roi de Babylone et les Chaldéens qui vous assiègent, et je les rassemblerai au milieu de cette ville.
L’Éternel répond qu’il va anéantir la puissance de Juda (4 a), qu’il couronnera de succès l’offensive de Babylone (4 b) et qu’il se fera lui-même Ennemi de son peuple (versets 5,6).
5 Puis je combattrai contre vous, la main étendue et le bras fort, avec colère, avec fureur, avec une grande irritation.
6 Je frapperai les habitants de cette ville, les hommes et les bêtes ; ils mourront d’une peste affreuse.
7 Après cela, dit l’Éternel, je livrerai Sédécias, roi de Juda, ses serviteurs, le peuple, et ceux qui dans cette ville échapperont à la peste, à l’épée et à la famine, je les livrerai entre les mains de Nébucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, entre les mains de leurs ennemis, entre les mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie ; et Nébucadnetsar les frappera du tranchant de l’épée, il ne les épargnera pas, il n’aura point de pitié, point de compassion.
Tous seront livrés à Nébucadnetsar : roi, courtisans et gens du peuple rescapés des horreurs du siège (famine ou peste).
8 ¶ Tu diras à ce peuple : Ainsi parle l’Éternel : Voici, je mets devant vous le chemin de la vie et le chemin de la mort.

9 Celui qui restera dans cette ville mourra par l’épée, par la famine ou par la peste ; mais celui qui sortira pour se rendre aux Chaldéens qui vous assiègent aura la vie sauve, et sa vie sera son butin.
Son butin : c’est à peine si les transfuges s’en tireront sains et saufs.
10 Car je dirige mes regards contre cette ville pour faire du mal et non du bien, dit l’Éternel ; elle sera livrée entre les mains du roi de Babylone, qui la brûlera par le feu.
11 Et tu diras à la maison du roi de Juda : Écoutez la parole de l’Éternel !
12 Maison de David ! Ainsi parle l’Éternel : Rendez la justice dès le matin, Et délivrez l’opprimé des mains de l’oppresseur, De peur que ma colère n’éclate comme un feu, Et ne s’enflamme, sans qu’on puisse l’éteindre, À cause de la méchanceté de vos actions.
13 Voici, j’en veux à toi, Ville assise dans la vallée, sur le rocher de la plaine, Dit l’Éternel, A vous qui dites : Qui descendra contre nous ? Qui entrera dans nos demeures ?
14 Je vous châtierai selon le fruit de vos œuvres, dit l’Éternel ; Je mettrai le feu à votre forêt, Et il en dévorera tous les alentours.

1 ¶ The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, when king Zedekiah sent unto him Pashhur the son of Malchiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest unto him, saying,
21.1-10 Ninth message of Jeremiah: the divine adversary, the desperate alternative
This oracle is a new announcement of the fall of Jerusalem. In 37.3-10 we find an analogous account, which is not, however, a doublet. It relates how the Egyptians temporarily raised the siege of the city, and then returned to invest it more fiercely. This message is from the initial phase of the seat.
1,2 Zedekiah sends another dignitary named Paschhur to beg Jeremiah to intercede.
2 See for us the LORD; For Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made war against us; Perhaps the LORD will do one of his miracles in our favor, that he may depart from us.
3 And Jeremiah said unto them, Ye shall say unto Zedekiah,
4 Thus saith the LORD God of Israel: Behold, I will turn away the weapons of war which are in your hands, and with which you fight against the walls of the king of Babylon, and the Chaldeans that besiege you; And gather them in the midst of this city.
The Lord replies that he will annihilate the power of Judah (4a), that he will crown the Babylon offensive with success (4b) and that he will make himself an enemy of his people (verses 5, 6).
5 And I will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, with anger, with fury, with great anger.
6 I will smite the inhabitants of this city, men and beasts; They will die of a frightful plague.
7 After this, I will give up Zedekiah king of Judah, his servants the people, and those who escape from the pestilence, the sword, and the famine, I will deliver them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, into the hands of their enemies into the hands of those who want their lives; And Nebuchadnezzar shall strike them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them; he shall have no mercy, no compassion.
All will be delivered to Nebuchadnezzar: king, courtiers and people of the people who have survived the horrors of the siege (famine or plague).
8 And thou shalt say unto this people, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.

9 He that dwelleth in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, or by pestilence; But he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans that besiege thee shall be saved, and his life shall be his spoil.
His booty: scarcely will the defectors get away safely.
10 For I have directed my eyes against this city to do evil and not good, saith the LORD; It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, which shall burn it with fire.
11 And thou shalt say unto the house of the king of Judah, Hear the word of the LORD.
12 House of David! Thus saith the LORD, Give righteousness in the morning, and deliver the oppressed from the hand of the oppressor, lest my anger break forth like fire, and be not aflame, Extinguish, Because of the wickedness of your actions.
13 Behold, I am against you, a city sitting in the valley, on the rock of the plain, saith the LORD, to you who say, Who shall come down against us? Who will enter our homes?
14 I will chasten you according to the fruit of your deeds, saith the LORD; I will set fire to your forest, And it shall devour all its surroundings.
