1 ¶ Il dit : Lorsqu’un homme répudie sa femme, Qu’elle le quitte et devient la femme d’un autre, Cet homme retourne-t-il encore vers elle ? Le pays même ne serait-il pas souillé ? Et toi, tu t’es prostituée à de nombreux amants, Et tu reviendrais à moi ! dit l’Éternel.
Lorsqu’un homme répudie. Un homme ne pouvait reprendre la femme qu’il avait répudiée, car c’était source de souillure pour elle (#De 24: 4). Une telle attitude était scandaleuse. Jérémie utilisa cette analogie pour présenter Israël sous les traits d’une prostituée du point de vue spirituel - entourée de nombreux amants, c`est à dire les nations (#Jér 2:18) et les idoles (#Jér 2:23-25 ; #Jér 3:2, #Jér 3:6-9). Néanmoins, le Seigneur était prêt, dans sa grâce, à reprendre Israël ou Juda, si le peuple se repentait (#Jér 3:12-14).
2 Lève tes yeux vers les hauteurs, et regarde ! Où ne t’es-tu pas prostituée ! Tu te tenais sur les chemins, comme l’Arabe dans le désert, Et tu as souillé le pays par tes prostitutions et par ta méchanceté.
3 Aussi les pluies ont-elles été retenues, Et la pluie du printemps a-t-elle manqué ; Mais tu as eu le front d’une femme prostituée, Tu n’as pas voulu avoir honte.
4 Maintenant, n’est-ce pas ? tu cries vers moi : Mon père ! Tu as été l’ami de ma jeunesse !
5 Gardera-t-il à toujours sa colère ? La conservera-t-il à jamais ? Et voici, tu as dit, tu as fait des choses criminelles, tu les as consommées.
6 ¶ L’Éternel me dit, au temps du roi Josias : As-tu vu ce qu’a fait l’infidèle Israël ? Elle est allée sur toute montagne élevée et sous tout arbre vert, et là elle s’est prostituée.
infidèle. Ou « rebelle ». Voir aussi les vv. 8, 11-12, 14. (le cœur s’égare). La métaphore de l’égarement, de l’éloignement ou de l’infidélité est souvent utilisée par les prophètes (#Esa 57:17 ; #Jér 3:6, #Jér 3:8, #Jér 3:11-12, #Jér 3:14, #Jér 3:22 ; #Jér 8:5 ; #Jér 31:22 ; #Jér 49:4 ; #Os 11:7 ; #Os 14: 4). Ici, elle clarifie ce qu’est un apostat: il appartient à la catégorie des hommes insensés, méchants et désobéissants, par contraste avec les hommes sages et pieux.
7 Je disais : Après avoir fait toutes ces choses, elle reviendra à moi. Mais elle n’est pas revenue. Et sa sœur, la perfide Juda, en a été témoin.
8 Quoique j’eusse répudié l’infidèle Israël à cause de tous ses adultères, et que je lui eusse donné sa lettre de divorce, j’ai vu que la perfide Juda, sa sœur, n’a point eu de crainte, et qu’elle est allée se prostituer pareillement.
répudié … donné sa lettre de divorce. Bien que Dieu déteste le divorce (#Mal 2:16), il le tolère dans le cas d’un endurcissement dans l’adultère. C’est ce qu’indique cette analogie avec le domaine spirituel et la répudiation d’Israël par Dieu pour cause de péché continuel. Il avait divorcé d’Israël, mais pas encore de Juda (cf. #Esa 50:1). Cf. #Esd 10:3, où le divorce est présenté comme une action juste, de la part du peuple de Dieu, pour se séparer d’épouses idolâtres.
9 Par sa criante impudicité Israël a souillé le pays, elle a commis un adultère avec la pierre et le bois.
10 Malgré tout cela, la perfide Juda, sa sœur, n’est pas revenue à moi de tout son cœur ; c’est avec fausseté qu’elle l’a fait, dit l’Éternel.
11 L’Éternel me dit : L’infidèle Israël paraît innocente En comparaison de la perfide Juda.
12 ¶ Va, crie ces paroles vers le septentrion, et dis : Reviens, infidèle Israël ! dit l’Éternel. Je ne jetterai pas sur vous un regard sévère ; Car je suis miséricordieux, dit l’Éternel, Je ne garde pas ma colère à toujours.
13 Reconnais seulement ton iniquité, Reconnais que tu as été infidèle à l’Éternel, ton Dieu, Que tu as dirigé çà et là tes pas vers les dieux étrangers, Sous tout arbre vert, Et que tu n’as pas écouté ma voix, dit l’Éternel.
14 Revenez, enfants rebelles, dit l’Éternel ; Car je suis votre maître. Je vous prendrai, un d’une ville, deux d’une famille, Et je vous ramènerai dans Sion.
je suis votre maître. Dieu comparait sa relation avec Israël à un mariage (« maître » peut signifier « mari »), et il supplia Juda de se repentir pour revenir à lui, car il était prêt à l’accueillir. Cf. la restauration de Gomer, dans le livre d’Osée, pour illustrer la reprise par Dieu de son peuple adultère, malgré sa méchanceté.
15 Je vous donnerai des bergers selon mon cœur, Et ils vous paîtront avec intelligence et avec sagesse.
3:15-18
en ces jours-là … en ces jours. Lorsque Israël se repentira (vv. #Jér 3:13-14, #Jér 3:22) ce qui ne s’est pas encore produit mais arrivera lors du millénium, l’ère de la restauration effectuée par Dieu, dont parlent souvent les prophètes (#Jér 23:5-6 ; #Jér 30:1-33:2 ; #Ez 36) - Dieu accordera les bénédictions suivantes:
1° des bergers aptes à enseigner la vérité à son peuple;
2° sa présence personnelle sur le trône de Jérusalem, et pas seulement celle de l’arche de l’alliance;
3° l’allégeance même des nations païennes;
4° la justice;
5° l’authenticité du culte rendu;
6° l’union d’Israël (le nord) et de Juda (le sud) dans un seul royaume;
7° le rétablissement du peuple dans le pays promis.
16 Lorsque vous aurez multiplié et fructifié dans le pays, En ces jours-là, dit l’Éternel, On ne parlera plus de l’arche de l’alliance de l’Éternel ; Elle ne viendra plus à la pensée ; On ne se la rappellera plus, on ne s’apercevra plus de son absence, Et l’on n’en fera point une autre.
17 En ce temps-là, on appellera Jérusalem le trône de l’Éternel ; Toutes les nations s’assembleront à Jérusalem, au nom de l’Éternel, Et elles ne suivront plus les penchants de leur mauvais cœur.
18 En ces jours, La maison de Juda marchera avec la maison d’Israël ; Elles viendront ensemble du pays du septentrion Au pays dont j’ai donné la possession à vos pères.
19 Je disais : Comment te mettrai-je parmi mes enfants, Et te donnerai-je un pays de délices, Un héritage, le plus bel ornement des nations ? Je disais : Tu m’appelleras : Mon père ! Et tu ne te détourneras pas de moi.
te mettrai-je parmi mes enfants. Allusion à l’adoption qui intégrera le peuple dans la famille de Dieu lorsqu’il se détournera des idoles pour reconnaître l’Éternel comme « père ».
20 ¶ Mais, comme une femme est infidèle à son amant, Ainsi vous m’avez été infidèles, maison d’Israël, Dit l’Éternel.
femme est infidèle. Osée avait utilisé la même image (vers 755-710 av. J.-C.). Dieu avait été contraint au divorce, à cause de l’adultère spirituel d’Israël et de son absence de repentance, mais il accueillerait à nouveau son peuple en cas de repentance (cf. vv. #Jér 3:12-13).
Israël. Étant donné l’irréversible dispersion de l’Israël du nord (722 av. J.-C.), il ne restait plus que Juda qui puisse être appelé de ce nom, et Jérémie choisissait parfois de l’appeler ainsi (par exemple vv. #Jér 3:20-23).
21 Une voix se fait entendre sur les lieux élevés ; Ce sont les pleurs, les supplications des enfants d’Israël ; Car ils ont perverti leur voie, Ils ont oublié l’Éternel, leur Dieu.
22 Revenez, enfants rebelles, Je pardonnerai vos infidélités. — Nous voici, nous allons à toi, Car tu es l’Éternel, notre Dieu.
23 Oui, le bruit qui vient des collines et des montagnes n’est que mensonge ; Oui, c’est en l’Éternel, notre Dieu, qu’est le salut d’Israël.
24 Les idoles ont dévoré le produit du travail de nos pères, Dès notre jeunesse, Leurs brebis et leurs bœufs, leurs fils et leurs filles.
25 Nous avons notre honte pour couche, Et notre ignominie pour couverture ; Car nous avons péché contre l’Éternel, notre Dieu, Nous et nos pères, dès notre jeunesse jusqu’à ce jour, Et nous n’avons pas écouté la voix de l’Éternel, notre Dieu. —
JEREMIAH 3 : 1 to 25 + NOTES TO JOHN MACARTHUR
1 ¶ And he said, When a man repudiate his wife, let her leave him, and become the wife of another. Is this man returning to her again? Would not the land be defiled? And thou hast prostituted herself to many lovers, and thou shalt return unto me. Says the LORD.
When a man repudiates. A man could not take back the woman he had repudiated, for it was a source of defilement for her (# 24: 4). Such an attitude was scandalous. Jeremiah used this analogy to portray Israel as a prostitute from the spiritual point of view - surrounded by many lovers, that is, nations (Jer. 2:18) and idols (Jer. 2: 23-25 , Jer. 3: 2, Jer. 3: 6-9). Nevertheless, the Lord was ready in His grace to take back Israel or Judah, if the people repented (Jer. 3: 12-14).
2 Lift up your eyes to the heights, and see! Where have you not been a prostitute? You stood on the roads like the Arab in the wilderness, and you defiled the land with your prostitution and your wickedness.
3 So the rains were restrained, and the rain of spring was wanting; But you had the front of a prostitute woman, You did not want to be ashamed.
4- Now, is not it? Thou shalt cry unto me: My father! You were the friend of my youth!
5 Will he keep his wrath? Will it keep it forever? And, behold, thou hast said, thou hast done criminal things, thou hast consumed them.
6 And the LORD said unto me in the days of king Josiah, Have you seen what the unfaithful Israel has done? She went on every high mountain and under every green tree, and there she prostituted herself.
unfaithful. Or "rebellious." See also the vv. 8, 11-12, 14. (the heart goes astray). The metaphor of misguidance, remoteness, or infidelity is often used by the prophets (#Esa 57:17; # Jer. 3: 6, # Jer. 3: 8, # Jer. 3: 11-12, Jeremiah 3:14, Jeremiah 3:22, Jeremiah 8: 5, Jeremiah 31:22, Jeremiah 49: 4, # 11: 7, # 14: 4). Here it clarifies what an apostate is: it belongs to the category of insane, wicked and disobedient men, in contrast with wise and pious men.
7 I said, After doing all these things, she will return to me. But she did not come back. And his sister, the perfidious Judah, has witnessed it.
8 Although I had repudiated the unfaithful Israel for all his adulteries, and had given him his letter of divorce, I saw that the perfidious Judah his sister had no fear, She went to prostitute herself in the same way.
Repudiated ... given his divorce letter. Although God hates divorce (#Mal 2:16), he tolerates it in the case of a hardening in adultery. This is indicated by this analogy with the spiritual domain and the repudiation of Israel by God for the sake of continual sin. He had divorced Israel, but not yet Judah (cf. #Esa 50: 1). Cf. #Esd 10: 3, where divorce is presented as a just act, on the part of the people of God, to separate from idolatrous wives.
9 By her blaming fornication Israel defiled the land, and she committed adultery with stone and wood.
10 Despite all this, the perfidious Judah, her sister, did not return to me with all her heart; It is with falsity that she did it, saith the LORD.
11 And the LORD said unto me, The unfaithful Israel is innocent in comparison with the treacherous Judah.
12 ¶ Go, cried these words to the north, and say, Come back, unfaithful Israel. Says the LORD. I will not cast a severe glance at you; For I am merciful, saith the LORD, I do not keep my wrath for ever.
13 Only acknowledge thine iniquity, acknowledge that thou hast been unfaithful to the LORD thy God, that thou hast steered thy footsteps unto the strange gods, beneath every green tree, and hast not hearkened unto my voice, Says the LORD.
14 Come back, rebellious children, says the LORD; For I am your master. I will take you, one of a city, two of a family, and I will bring you back to Zion.
I am your master. God compared his relationship with Israel to a marriage ( "master" may mean "husband"), and he begged Judah to repent and return to him, for he was ready to welcome him. Cf. the restoration of Gomer, in the book of Hosea, to illustrate the resumption by God of his adulterous people, in spite of his wickedness.
15 I will give you shepherds according to my heart, and they will feed you with understanding and wisdom.
3: 15-18
In those days ... in those days. When Israel repents (vv. # Jer. 3: 13-14, # Jer. 3:22) what has not yet happened but will happen in the millennium, the era of restoration by God, Prophets (Jeremiah 23: 5-6, Jeremiah 30: 1-33: 2, Ezekiel 36) - God will grant the following blessings:
(1) shepherds capable of teaching the truth to his people;
(2) his personal presence on the throne of Jerusalem, and not only that of the ark of the covenant;
(3) the very allegiance of the pagan nations;
(4) justice;
(5) the authenticity of the worship rendered;
(6) the union of Israel (north) and Judah (the south) in one kingdom;
7. the re-establishment of the people in the promised country.
16 When thou shalt multiply and multiply in the land, In those days, saith the LORD, they shall no more speak of the ark of the covenant of the LORD; It will no longer come to mind; They will no longer be remembered; their absence will no longer be noticed, and no other will be made.
17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of Jehovah; All the nations shall gather themselves together in Jerusalem in the name of the LORD, and they shall no longer follow the inclinations of their evil heart.
18 In those days the house of Judah will go with the house of Israel; They shall come together from the land of the north to the land which I have given to your fathers.
19 And I said, How shall I put thee among my children, and give thee a land of delight, an inheritance, the greatest ornament of the nations? I said, You will call me: My father! And thou shalt not turn away from me.
Will I put you among my children? Allusion to adoption that will integrate the people into the family of God when he turns away from idols to recognize the Lord as "father."
20 ¶ But as a woman is unfaithful to her lover, so have ye been unfaithful unto me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD.
Woman is unfaithful. Hosea had used the same image (c. 755-710 BC). God had been compelled to divorce because of the spiritual adultery of Israel and his lack of repentance, but he would welcome his people again in case of repentance (cf. Jeremiah 3: 12-13).
Israel. Given the irreversible dispersion of northern Israel (722 BC), there remained only Judah who could be called by that name, and Jeremiah sometimes chose to call it so (for example, vv . # 3: 20-23).
21 A voice is heard in high places; These are the tears and supplications of the children of Israel; For they have perverted their way; they have forgotten the LORD their God.
22 Come back, rebellious children, I will forgive your infidelities. - Here we are, we go to you, for you are the LORD our God.
23 Yes, the noise that comes from hills and mountains is a lie; Yes, it is in the LORD our God that is the salvation of Israel.
24 The idols have devoured the produce of the work of our fathers, from our youth, their sheep and their oxen, their sons and their daughters.
25 We have our shame to cover, and our ignominy to cover; For we have sinned against the LORD our God, We and our fathers from our youth even unto this day, and we have not hearkened to the voice of the LORD our God. -
