1 ¶ La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de l’Éternel, la dixième année de Sédécias, roi de Juda. — C’était la dix-huitième année de Nébucadnetsar.
la dixième année. C`est à-dire en 587 av. J.-C., la dixième année du règne de Sédécias (av. J.-C.), la dix-huitième de la domination de Nébucadnetsar, pendant le siège de Jérusalem par les troupes babyloniennes.
2 L’armée du roi de Babylone assiégeait alors Jérusalem ; et Jérémie, le prophète, était enfermé dans la cour de la prison qui était dans la maison du roi de Juda.
L’armée du roi de Babylone assiégeait. Le siège, qui commença le dixième mois (janvier) de 588 av. J.-C., dura au moins trente mois, jusqu’au quatrième mois (juillet) de 586 av. J.-C. (#Jér 39:1-2). Cf. #Jér 34:1. Le contexte de ce ch. est donc celui de la perte imminente par Juda de sa terre, à peine un an avant la victoire finale de Babylone, détaillée aux ch. #Jér 39:1-40:2 ; 52.

enfermé dans … la prison. Le dernier roi d’Israël avait mis Jérémie en prison en l’accusant d’avoir prêché la trahison contre la nation et contre le roi. Sédécias ne voulait entendre que des paroles positives, pour que le peuple soit encouragé à résister.
3 Sédécias, roi de Juda, l’avait fait enfermer, et lui avait dit : Pourquoi prophétises-tu, en disant : Ainsi parle l’Éternel : Voici, je livre cette ville entre les mains du roi de Babylone, et il la prendra ;
4 Sédécias, roi de Juda, n’échappera pas aux Chaldéens, mais il sera livré entre les mains du roi de Babylone, il lui parlera bouche à bouche, et ses yeux verront ses yeux ;
5 le roi de Babylone emmènera Sédécias à Babylone, où il restera jusqu’à ce que je me souvienne de lui, dit l’Éternel ; si vous vous battez contre les Chaldéens, vous n’aurez point de succès.
6 Jérémie dit : La parole de l’Éternel m’a été adressée, en ces mots:
7 Voici, Hanameel, fils de ton oncle Schallum, va venir auprès de toi pour te dire: Achète mon champ qui est à Anathoth, car tu as le droit de rachat pour l’acquérir.
8 Et Hanameel, fils de mon oncle, vint auprès de moi, selon la parole de l’Éternel, dans la cour de la prison, et il me dit : Achète mon champ, qui est à Anathoth, dans le pays de Benjamin, car tu as le droit d’héritage et de rachat, achète-le ! Je reconnus que c’était la parole de l’Éternel.
le droit d’héritage. Pour faire face à ses difficultés financières, un homme avait le choix de vendre ses biens; jusqu’à l’année du jubilé, le droit de les racheter appartenait au parent le plus proche. Si un étranger en était devenu propriétaire en raison d’une dette impayée, le parent avait le droit de rachat, puisque c’était un bien familial (#Lé 25:25). La terre d’un Lévite ne pouvait être acquise que par un autre Lévite (#Lé 25:32-34), ce qu’était Jérémie. Il exécuta ce que Dieu lui ordonnait de faire.
9 J’achetai de Hanameel, fils de mon oncle, le champ qui est à Anathoth, et je lui pesai l’argent, dix-sept sicles d’argent.
10 J’écrivis un contrat, que je cachetai, je pris des témoins, et je pesai l’argent dans une balance.
11 Je pris ensuite le contrat d’acquisition, celui qui était cacheté, conformément à la loi et aux usages, et celui qui était ouvert ;
12 et je remis le contrat d’acquisition à Baruc, fils de Nérija, fils de Machséja, en présence de Hanameel, fils de mon oncle, en présence des témoins qui avaient signé le contrat d’acquisition, et en présence de tous les juifs qui se trouvaient dans la cour de la prison.
13 Et je donnai devant eux cet ordre à Baruc:
14 Ainsi parle l’Éternel des armées, le Dieu d’Israël : Prends ces écrits, ce contrat d’acquisition, celui qui est cacheté et celui qui est ouvert, et mets-les dans un vase de terre, afin qu’ils se conservent longtemps.
Prends ces écrits. Les titres de propriété sur un terrain, conservés pour des raisons de sécurité dans une jarre, servaient à attester plus tard qu’on possédait effectivement le droit de propriété. Des hommes d’Anathoth revinrent effectivement de l’exil babylonien (#Esd 2:23). Il pouvait aussi y avoir des habitants de cette ville parmi les indigents laissés sur place par les Babyloniens (ch. #Jér 39). Un jour, encore à venir, Dieu serait capable (vv. #Jér 32:17, #Jér 32:27) de rendre son terrain au Jérémie ressuscité et de confirmer les prétentions des descendants de ce sacrificateur et prophète.
15 Car ainsi parle l’Éternel des armées, le Dieu d’Israël : On achètera encore des maisons, des champs et des vignes, dans ce pays.
16 ¶ Après que j’eus remis le contrat d’acquisition à Baruc, fils de Nérija, j’adressai cette prière à l’Éternel:
32:16-25
Dans sa puissance immense et souveraine, Dieu pouvait faire tout ce qu’il voulait, aussi bien pendant le temps de la captivité que lors de la restauration à venir. Jérémie se demandait donc pourquoi il lui avait demandé de racheter le champ.
17 Ah ! Seigneur Éternel, Voici, tu as fait les cieux et la terre Par ta grande puissance et par ton bras étendu : Rien n’est étonnant de ta part.
18 Tu fais miséricorde jusqu’à la millième génération, Et tu punis l’iniquité des pères dans le sein de leurs enfants après eux. Tu es le Dieu grand, le puissant, Dont le nom est l’Éternel des armées.
19 Tu es grand en conseil et puissant en action ; Tu as les yeux ouverts sur toutes les voies des enfants des hommes, Pour rendre à chacun selon ses voies, Selon le fruit de ses œuvres.
20 Tu as fait des miracles et des prodiges dans le pays d’Égypte jusqu’à ce jour, Et en Israël et parmi les hommes, Et tu t’es fait un nom comme il l’est aujourd’hui.
21 Tu as fait sortir du pays d’Égypte ton peuple d’Israël, Avec des miracles et des prodiges, à main forte et à bras étendu, Et avec une grande terreur.
22 Tu leur as donné ce pays, Que tu avais juré à leurs pères de leur donner, Pays où coulent le lait et le miel.
23 Ils sont venus, et ils en ont pris possession. Mais ils n’ont point obéi à ta voix, Ils n’ont point observé ta loi, Ils n’ont pas fait tout ce que tu leur avais ordonné de faire. Et c’est alors que tu as fait fondre sur eux tous ces malheurs !
24 Voici, les terrasses s’élèvent contre la ville et la menacent ; La ville sera livrée entre les mains des Chaldéens qui l’attaquent, Vaincue par l’épée, par la famine et par la peste. Ce que tu as dit est arrivé, et tu le vois.
25 Néanmoins, Seigneur Éternel, tu m’as dit: Achète un champ pour de l’argent, prends des témoins … Et la ville est livrée entre les mains des Chaldéens !
26 ¶ La parole de l’Éternel fut adressée à Jérémie, en ces mots:
32:26-35
Dieu passa en revue le péché de Juda et affirma à Jérémie que les Babyloniens conquerraient Jérusalem (« cette ville » v. 28, etc.).
27 Voici, je suis l’Éternel, le Dieu de toute chair. Y a-t-il rien qui soit étonnant de ma part ?
28 C’est pourquoi ainsi parle l’Éternel : Voici, je livre cette ville entre les mains des Chaldéens, Et entre les mains de Nébucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, Et il la prendra.
29 Les Chaldéens qui attaquent cette ville vont entrer, Ils y mettront le feu, et ils la brûleront, Avec les maisons sur les toits desquelles on a offert de l’encens à Baal Et fait des libations à d’autres dieux, Afin de m’irriter.
30 Car les enfants d’Israël et les enfants de Juda N’ont fait, dès leur jeunesse, que ce qui est mal à mes yeux ; Les enfants d’Israël n’ont fait que m’irriter Par l’œuvre de leurs mains, dit l’Éternel.
31 Car cette ville excite ma colère et ma fureur, Depuis le jour où on l’a bâtie jusqu’à ce jour ; Aussi je veux l’ôter de devant ma face,
32 A cause de tout le mal que les enfants d’Israël et les enfants de Juda Ont fait pour m’irriter, Eux, leurs rois, leurs chefs, leurs sacrificateurs et leurs prophètes, Les hommes de Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem.
33 Ils m’ont tourné le dos, ils ne m’ont pas regardé ; On les a enseignés, on les a enseignés dès le matin ; Mais ils n’ont pas écouté pour recevoir instruction.
34 Ils ont placé leurs abominations Dans la maison sur laquelle mon nom est invoqué, Afin de la souiller.
35 Ils ont bâti des hauts lieux à Baal dans la vallée de Ben-Hinnom, Pour faire passer à Moloc leurs fils et leurs filles: Ce que je ne leur avais point ordonné ; Et il ne m’était point venu à la pensée Qu’ils commettraient de telles horreurs Pour faire pécher Juda.
36 Et maintenant, ainsi parle l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël, Sur cette ville dont vous dites: Elle sera livrée entre les mains du roi de Babylone, Vaincue par l’épée, par la famine et par la peste:
32:36-41
Dieu restaurerait un jour Israël en le ramenant sur sa terre et en lui offrant la bénédiction du salut.
37 Voici, je les rassemblerai de tous les pays où je les ai chassés, Dans ma colère, dans ma fureur, et dans ma grande irritation ; Je les ramènerai dans ce lieu, Et je les y ferai habiter en sûreté.
je les ramènerai dans ce lieu. Dieu promit de ramener son peuple sur la terre d’Israël (cf. v. #Jér 32:44). Il semble naturel d’attendre que l’accomplissement de cette bénédiction soit aussi littéral que le contraire: sa dispersion loin de la terre promise (cf. v. #Jér 32:42).
38 Ils seront mon peuple, Et je serai leur Dieu.
32:38-39 Ces vv. ont trait au salut spirituel, c`est à dire, à la vraie connaissance et la vraie adoration de Dieu.
39 Je leur donnerai un même cœur et une même voie, Afin qu’ils me craignent toujours, Pour leur bonheur et celui de leurs enfants après eux.
40 Je traiterai avec eux une alliance éternelle, Je ne me détournerai plus d’eux, Je leur ferai du bien, Et je mettrai ma crainte dans leur cœur, Afin qu’ils ne s’éloignent pas de moi.
une alliance éternelle. L’accomplissement suprême de cet avenir dans le pays promis ne survint pas lors du retour des Juifs à l’époque d’Esdras et de Néhémie. Il se produira au moment où Dieu donnera au peuple d’Israël un cœur nouveau qui lui permettra d’obtenir le salut éternel, en même temps qu’un retour sur la terre de ses ancêtres (cf. #Jér 33:8-9 et #Ez 36:26).
41 Je prendrai plaisir à leur faire du bien, Et je les planterai véritablement dans ce pays, De tout mon cœur et de toute mon âme.
42 Car ainsi parle l’Éternel : De même que j’ai fait venir sur ce peuple tous ces grands malheurs, De même je ferai venir sur eux tout le bien que je leur promets.
32:42-44
Dans le millénium, la terre sera de nouveau un objet de commerce en Israël.
43 On achètera des champs dans ce pays Dont vous dites : C’est un désert, sans hommes ni bêtes, Il est livré entre les mains des Chaldéens.
44 On achètera des champs pour de l’argent, On écrira des contrats, on les cachètera, on prendra des témoins, Dans le pays de Benjamin et aux environs de Jérusalem, Dans les villes de Juda, dans les villes de la montagne, Dans les villes de la plaine et dans les villes du midi ; Car je ramènerai leurs captifs, dit l’Éternel.
JEREMIAH 32 : 1 to 44 + NOTES TO JOHN MACARTHUR
1 ¶ The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah. It was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar.
The tenth year. That is to say in 587 BC. AD, the tenth year of the reign of Zedekiah (AD), the eighteenth of the rule of Nebuchadnezzar, during the siege of Jerusalem by the Babylonian troops.
2 Then the army of the king of Babylon besieged Jerusalem; And Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison which was in the house of the king of Judah.
The army of the king of Babylon was besieging. The siege, which began the tenth month (January) of 588 BC. BC, lasted at least thirty months, until the fourth month (July) of 586 BC. J.-C. (# Jer. 39: 1-2). Cf. Jer. 34: 1. The context of this ch. Is that of the imminent loss by Judah of his land, scarcely a year before the final victory of Babylon, detailed in chap. # Jer 39: 1-40: 2; 52.

Locked up in prison. The last king of Israel had put Jeremiah in prison accusing him of preaching treason against the nation and against the king. Zedekiah only wanted to hear positive words, so that the people might be encouraged to resist.
3 And Zedekiah the king of Judah had shut him up, and said unto him, Why prophesy thou, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it ;
4 And Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape the Chaldeans, but he shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and speak unto him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall see his eyes.
5 And the king of Babylon shall bring Zedekiah to Babylon, where he shall remain until I remember him, saith the LORD; If you fight against the Chaldeans, you will have no success.
6 And Jeremiah said, The word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
7 Behold, Hanameel, the son of thy uncle Shallum, go and come to thee to say to thee, Buy my field which is at Anathoth: for thou hast the right of redemption to acquire it.
8 And Hanameel the son of my uncle came unto me, according to the word of the LORD, to the court of the prison, and said unto me, Buy my field, which is at Anathoth in the land of Benjamin; You have the right of inheritance and redemption, buy it! I acknowledged that it was the word of the LORD.
The right of inheritance. To cope with his financial difficulties, a man had the choice of selling his goods; Until the year of jubilee, the right to redeem them belonged to the nearest relative. If a stranger had become the owner because of an unpaid debt, the parent had the right of redemption, since it was a family property (# Le 25:25). The land of a Levite could be acquired only by another Levite (# 25: 32-34), which was Jeremiah. He did what God commanded him to do.
9 And I bought the field that was at Anathoth from Hanameel the son of my uncle, and I weighed him silver, seventeen shekels of silver.
I wrote a contract, which I sealed, and took witnesses, and weighed the money in a scales.
11 Then I took the contract of acquisition, that which was sealed, according to law and customs, and that which was opened;
12 And I gave the purchase contract to Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Machshiah, in the presence of Hanameel the son of my uncle, in the presence of the witnesses who had signed the contract of acquisition, and in the presence of all the Jews Who were in the prison yard.
13 And I commanded Baruch before them, saying,
14 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Take these scriptures, this contract of acquisition, that which is sealed, and that which is opened, and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may For a long time.
Take these writings. Land titles kept for security reasons in a jar were used to certify later that the property was actually owned. Anathoth's men actually returned from the Babylonian exile (#Esd 2:23). There could also be inhabitants of this city among the indigent left by the Babylonians (ch. # Jer 39). One day, yet to come, God would be able to restore his land to the risen Jeremiah (vv. Jer. 32:17, # Jer. 32:27) and confirm the pretensions of the descendants of this priest and prophet.
15 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, and they shall buy houses, and fields, and vineyards in this land.
16 ¶ And when I had given the purchase contract unto Baruch the son of Neriah, I said unto the LORD,

In his immense and sovereign power, God could do whatever he wanted, both during the time of captivity and during the restoration to come. Jeremiah therefore wondered why he had asked him to redeem the field.
17 Ah! Lord LORD, Behold, thou hast made the heavens and the earth by thy great power and by thy outstretched arm: Nothing is astonishing from thee.
18 You have mercy even to the thousandth generation, and punish the iniquity of the fathers in the bosom of their children after them. Thou art the great God, the mighty, whose name is the LORD of hosts.
19 You are great in council and powerful in action; Thou hast opened eyes upon all the ways of the children of men, to give to each according to his ways, according to the fruit of his works.
20 Thou hast performed miracles and wonders in the land of Egypt till this day, and in Israel, and among men, and thou hast made a name for herself as it is today.
21 Thou hast brought forth thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt, with miracles and prodigies, with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm, and with great terror.
22 Thou hast given them this land, which thou hadst sworn to their fathers to give unto them, a land flowing with milk and honey.
23 They came, and they took possession of it. But they have not obeyed your voice; they have not kept your law; they have not done all that you have commanded them to do. And it was then that you made all these misfortunes fall upon them!
24 Behold, the terraces rise up against the city and threaten it; The city shall be delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans who attack it, defeated by the sword, by famine, and by the plague. What you said happened, and you see it.
25 Nevertheless, O Lord God, thou hast said unto me, Buy a field for money, and take witnesses. And the city is delivered into the hand of the Chaldeans.
26 ¶ And the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying,
32: 26-35
God reviewed the sin of Judah and told Jeremiah that the Babylonians would conquer Jerusalem ("this city" 28, etc.).
27 Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is there anything surprising about me?
28 Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will deliver this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it.
29 And the Chaldeans that attack this city shall go in, and they shall burn it, and burn it with the houses on whose roofs incense was offered to Baal, and made drink offerings to other gods. 'irritate.
30 For the children of Israel and the children of Judah did from their youth only that which was evil in my sight; The children of Israel have only made me angry by the work of their hands, says the LORD.
31 For this city provokes my anger and my fury, from the day when it was built up to this day; Therefore I will remove it from before my face,
32 Because of all the evil that the children of Israel and the children of Judah have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
33 They turned my back on me, they did not look at me; They were taught, taught in the morning; But they did not listen to receive instruction.
34 They have placed their abominations in the house on which my name is invoked, in order to defile it.
35 They have built high places in Baal in the valley of Ben-Hinnom, to bring their sons and daughters to Molech, which I commanded them not; And it had not occurred to me that they would commit such horrors to make Judah sin.
36 And now thus saith Jehovah the God of Israel, concerning this city of which ye say, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, defeated by the sword, by famine, and by plague:
32: 36-41
God would one day restore Israel by bringing him back to his land and offering him the blessing of salvation.
37 Behold, I will gather them from all the countries where I have driven them out, in my anger, in my fury, and in my great irritation; I will bring them back to this place, and I will cause them to dwell in safety.
I will bring them back to this place. God promised to bring His people back to the land of Israel (cf. Jeremiah 32:44). It seems natural to expect that the fulfillment of this blessing would be as literal as the opposite: its dispersion away from the promised land (cf. Jeremiah 32:42).
38 They shall be my people, and I will be their God.
32: 38-39 These vv. Relate to spiritual salvation, that is to say, to the true knowledge and true worship of God.
39 I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me always, for their happiness and that of their children after them.
40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, and I will not turn away from them; I will do them good, and I will put my fear in their hearts, that they may not depart from me.
An eternal covenant. The supreme fulfillment of this future in the promised land did not occur when the Jews returned to the days of Ezra and Nehemiah. It will happen at the moment when God will give the people of Israel a new heart that will enable them to obtain eternal salvation, as well as a return to the land of their ancestors (cf. Jer. 33: 8-9; #Ez 36:26).
41 I will take pleasure in doing them good, and I will plant them truly in this land, with all my heart and with all my soul.
42 For thus saith the LORD, As I have brought upon this people all these great misfortunes, so shall I bring upon them all the good which I promise unto them.
32: 42-44
In the millennium, land will again be an object of commerce in Israel.
43 And they shall buy fields in this land, which ye say, It is a wilderness, without man or beast, and is delivered into the hand of the Chaldeans.
44 In the land of Benjamin, and in the neighborhood of Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the hill country, in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the hill country, The cities of the plain and the cities of the south; For I will bring back their captivity, saith the LORD.
