1 ¶ Lorsque Jérémie eut achevé de dire à tout le peuple toutes les paroles de l’Éternel, leur Dieu, toutes ces paroles que l’Éternel, leur Dieu, l’avait chargé de leur dire,
43:1-7
Lorsque Jérémie eut achevé. Les chefs incorrigiblement désobéissants accusèrent Jérémie de les tromper et le forcèrent, ainsi que le reste de Juda, à partir en Égypte avec eux, alors même que toutes ses prophéties au sujet de Babylone s’étaient révélées exactes. Ce faisant, ils quittèrent le champ de la protection de Dieu et tombèrent sous son jugement, comme tous ceux qui désobéissent à sa Parole.
2 Azaria, fils d’Hosée, Jochanan, fils de Karéach, et tous ces hommes orgueilleux, dirent à Jérémie : Tu dis un mensonge : l’Éternel, notre Dieu, ne t’a point chargé de nous dire : N’allez pas en Égypte pour y demeurer.
3 Mais c’est Baruc, fils de Nérija, qui t’excite contre nous, afin de nous livrer entre les mains des Chaldéens, pour qu’ils nous fassent mourir ou nous emmènent captifs à Babylone.

Baruc. Celui qui, au ch. #Jér 36, prenait fidèlement note des messages de Jérémie était encore avec lui. Il avait donc été épargné, comme Dieu le lui avait promis au moins vingt ans plus tôt (#Jér 45:5, qui survint en 605 av. J.-C. d’après le v. 1).
4 Jochanan, fils de Karéach, tous les chefs des troupes, et tout le peuple, n’obéirent point à la voix de l’Éternel, qui leur ordonnait de rester dans le pays de Juda.
5 Et Jochanan, fils de Karéach, et tous les chefs des troupes, prirent tous les restes de Juda, qui, après avoir été dispersés parmi toutes les nations, étaient revenus pour habiter le pays de Juda,
6 les hommes, les femmes, les enfants, les filles du roi, et toutes les personnes que Nebuzaradan, chef des gardes, avait laissées avec Guedalia, fils d’Achikam, fils de Schaphan, et aussi Jérémie, le prophète, et Baruc, fils de Nérija.
7 Ils allèrent au pays d’Égypte, car ils n’obéirent pas à la voix de l’Éternel, et ils arrivèrent à Tachpanès.
Tachpanès. Localité située dans la région orientale du delta d’Égypte.
8 ¶ La parole de l’Éternel fut adressée à Jérémie, à Tachpanès, en ces mots:
9 Prends dans ta main de grandes pierres, et cache-les, en présence des Juifs, dans l’argile du four à briques qui est à l’entrée de la maison de Pharaon à Tachpanès.
43:9-13
Prends … de grandes pierres. Ces pierres, placées dans le mortier du dallage de l’entrée du palais du Pharaon, marqueraient l’endroit où le roi de Babylone sèmerait la dévastation et établirait son trône en Égypte. Cela s’accomplit lors de l’invasion de 568/567 av. J.-C.
10 Et tu diras aux Juifs : Ainsi parle l’Éternel des armées, le Dieu d’Israël : Voici, j’enverrai chercher Nébucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, mon serviteur, et je placerai son trône sur ces pierres que j’ai cachées, et il étendra son tapis sur elles.
11 Il viendra, et il frappera le pays d’Égypte ; à la mort ceux qui sont pour la mort, à la captivité ceux qui sont pour la captivité, à l’épée ceux qui sont pour l’épée !
12 Je mettrai le feu aux maisons des dieux de l’Égypte ; Nébucadnetsar les brûlera, il emmènera captives les idoles, il s’enveloppera du pays d’Égypte comme le berger s’enveloppe de son vêtement, et il sortira de là en paix.
comme le berger s’enveloppe de son vêtement. Tâche très simple et très facile, qui illustre avec quelle rapidité et quelle facilité Nébucadnetsar vaincrait l’Égypte.
13 Il brisera les statues de Beth-Schémesch au pays d’Égypte, et il brûlera par le feu les maisons des dieux de l’Égypte.
Beth-Schémesch. Littéralement « maison du soleil ». Expression désignant un temple consacré au culte du soleil. Des statues étaient érigées au nord de Memphis, à l’est du Nil; on disait qu’elles faisaient entre 18 et 30 mètres de haut.

1 ¶ And when Jeremiah had finished speaking to all the people all the words of the LORD their God, and all the words which the LORD their God had commanded them to say unto them,
43: 1-7
When Jeremiah had finished. The incorrigibly disobedient leaders accused Jeremiah of deceiving them, and compelled him and the rest of Judah to go to Egypt with them, even though all his prophecies concerning Babylon had proved to be correct. In doing so, they left the field of God's protection and fell under his judgment, like all those who disobey His Word.
2 And Azariah the son of Hoshea, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all these proud men, said unto Jeremiah, Thou hast said a lie: Jehovah our God hath not charged thee to say unto us, In Egypt to remain there.
3 But it is Baruch the son of Neriah, who turns thee upon us, to deliver us into the hands of the Chaldeans, that they may put us to death, or take us captive to Babylon.

Baruc. The person who, in ch. # Jer 36, faithfully took note of the messages of Jeremiah was still with him. He had therefore been spared, as God had promised him at least twenty years earlier (Jer. 45: 5, which came in 605 BC according to v. 1).
4 And Joanan the son of Kareah, all the captains of the host, and all the people, did not obey the voice of Jehovah, who commanded them to remain in the land of Judah.
5 And Joanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the troops, took all the remnant of Judah, who, having been scattered among all the nations, returned to dwell in the land of Judah,
6 And the men, and the women, and the children, and the daughters of the king, and all the men whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and also Jeremiah the prophet, Son of Neriah.
7 And they went into the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of Jehovah, and came to Tachpanhes.
Tachpanès. Locality located in the eastern region of the delta of Egypt.
8 ¶ And the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah at Tachpanes, saying,
9 Take great stones in your hand and hide them in the presence of the Jews in the clay of the brick kiln which is at the entrance of Pharaoh's house at Tachpanhes.
43: 9-13
Take ... big stones. These stones, placed in the mortar of the paving of the entrance to the palace of Pharaoh, would mark the place where the king of Babylon would sow devastation and establish his throne in Egypt. This was accomplished during the invasion of 568/567 BC. J.-C.
10 And thou shalt say unto the Jews, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon my servant, and I will set his throne upon these stones, And he shall spread his carpet over them.
11 He will come and strike the land of Egypt; To death those who are for death, to captivity those who are for captivity, to the sword those who are for the sword!
12 I will set fire to the houses of the gods of Egypt; Nebuchadnezzar will burn them, he will take captive the idols, he will wrap himself from the land of Egypt as the shepherd wraps himself in his garment, and he will go out from there in peace.
As the shepherd wraps himself in his garment. Task very simple and very easy, which illustrates with what rapidity and which Facility Nebuchadnezzar would defeat Egypt.
13 He shall break the statues of Beth-shemesh in the land of Egypt, and burn the houses of the gods of Egypt with fire.
Beth-Shemesh. Literally "house of the sun". Expression designating a temple devoted to the cult of the sun. Statues were erected north of Memphis, east of the Nile; They were said to be between 18 and 30 meters high.
