JONAS 02: 1 à 10 *** +
1 ¶ (2-2) Jonas, dans le ventre du poisson, pria l’Éternel, son Dieu.
2 (2-3) Il dit : Dans ma détresse, j’ai invoqué l’Éternel, Et il m’a exaucé ; Du sein du séjour des morts j’ai crié, Et tu as entendu ma voix.
du sein du séjour des morts. Cela ne signifie pas nécessairement que Jonas soit passé par la mort physique. L’expression « séjour des morts » était souvent employée, de façon hyperbolique, pour évoquer des circonstances catastrophiques, presque fatales (#Ps 30:4). Plus loin (v. #Jon 2:7), Jonas remercierait Dieu de l’avoir délivré « de la fosse », indiquant qu’il venait d’échapper à une mort certaine.
2:2-10 Jonas reconnut la souveraineté de Dieu (vv. #Jon 2:2-4) et accepta de s’y soumettre (vv. #Jon 2:5-10).
3 (2-4) Tu m’as jeté dans l’abîme, dans le cœur de la mer, Et les courants d’eau m’ont environné ; Toutes tes vagues et tous tes flots ont passé sur moi.
4 (2-5) Je disais : Je suis chassé loin de ton regard ! Mais je verrai encore ton saint temple.
Je suis chassé loin de ton regard! en #Jon 1:3, Jonas fuyait la présence de Dieu; dans sa nouvelle situation, il se rendait compte que Dieu l’avait temporairement banni.
Jonas reconnut dans son expérience au fond de l’océan un jugement exercé contre lui par l’Éternel.
5 (2-6) Les eaux m’ont couvert jusqu’à m’ôter la vie, L’abîme m’a enveloppé, Les roseaux ont entouré ma tête.
la vie. Littéralement « l’âme », terme qui désignait toute la personne de Jonas, aussi bien physique que spirituelle (cf. v. #Jon 2:8).
6 (2-7) Je suis descendu jusqu’aux racines des montagnes, Les barres de la terre m’enfermaient pour toujours ; Mais tu m’as fait remonter vivant de la fosse, Éternel, mon Dieu !
7 (2-8) Quand mon âme était abattue au dedans de moi, Je me suis souvenu de l’Éternel, Et ma prière est parvenue jusqu’à toi, Dans ton saint temple.
8 (2-9) Ceux qui s’attachent à de vaines idoles Éloignent d’eux la miséricorde.
9 (2-10) Pour moi, je t’offrirai des sacrifices avec un cri d’actions de grâces, J’accomplirai les vœux que j’ai faits : Le salut vient de l’Éternel.
j’accomplirai les vœux. Jonas se retrouvait dans la même situation que les marins: à offrir des sacrifices et faire des vœux (cf. #Jon 1:16). À la lumière de 3:1-4, il est possible de penser qu’il fit le vœu d’accomplir la mission que Dieu lui avait confiée: aller prêcher à Ninive (#Ps 50:14 ; #Ps 66:13-14).
10 ¶ (2-11) L’Éternel parla au poisson, et le poisson vomit Jonas sur la terre.
L’Éternel parla. Tout comme il connaît chaque étoile par son nom (#Esa 40:26 ; cf. #Ps 147:4), Dieu peut s’adresser à ses créatures animales (cf. #No 22:28-30). Jonas fut probablement vomi par le poisson à proximité de Japho.

¶ 1 (2-2) Jonah in the belly of the fish, prayed to the Lord his God.
2 (2-3) He said: In my distress I called upon the LORD, and he heard me; Breast Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice.
Breast hell. This does not necessarily mean that Jonas has passed through physical death. The term "hell" was often used, hyperbolically, to evoke catastrophic circumstances, almost fatal (#PS 30: 4). Further (v #Jon. 2: 7), Jonas would thank God for having delivered "the pit," indicating that he had just escaped certain death.
2: 2-10 Jonah recognized the sovereignty of God (vv #Jon. 2: 2-4) and agreed to submit it (vv #Jon. 2: 5-10).
3 (2-4) Thou hast cast into the abyss, in the heart of the sea, and the flood was round about me; All thy waves and thy waves passed over me.
4 (2-5) I said, I am cast out of thy sight But I will look again toward thy holy temple.
I am cast out of thy sight #Jon in 1: 3, Jonah fled the presence of God; in his new situation, he realized that God had temporarily banned.
Jonas knew his experience at the bottom of the ocean judgment exercised against him by the Lord.
5 (2-6) The waters me to take my life, the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
life. Literally "soul", a term which designated the whole person of Jonas, both physical and spiritual (cf. v #Jon. 2: 8).
6 (2-7) I went down to the mountains; the earth with her bars me forever; But you brought up my life from the pit, LORD my God!
7 (2-8) When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came in unto thee, into thy holy temple.
8 (2-9) Those vanities forsake their own mercy.
9 (2-10) for me, I will sacrifice to you with a thanksgiving cry, I will fulfill the vows I made: The salvation is of the Lord.
I will fulfill the vows. Jonas found himself in the same situation as the sailors: to offer sacrifices and make vows (cf. #Jon 1:16). In light of 3: 1-4, it is possible to think that he vowed to accomplish the mission that God had entrusted him to preach to Nineveh (#PS 50:14; #PS 66: 13-14 ).
¶ 10 (2-11) And the Lord spoke to the fish, and the fish vomited out Jonah upon the earth.
The Lord spoke. Just as he knows every star by name (#Esa 40:26; cf. #PS 147: 4), God can speak to his animal creatures (cf. #No 22: 28-30). Jonah was probably vomited by the fish near Joppa.
