1 ¶ Josué, fils de Nun, fit partir secrètement de Sittim deux espions, en leur disant : Allez, examinez le pays, et en particulier Jéricho. Ils partirent, et ils arrivèrent dans la maison d’une prostituée, qui se nommait Rahab, et ils y couchèrent.
Sittim … Jéricho. Sittim, ou la vallée des acacias, se trouvait dans les collines, à environ 12 km à l’est du Jourdain (cf. #Jos 3:1), et Jéricho à environ 12 km à l’ouest.
deux espions. Ces espions devaient l’informer sur les différents éléments topographie, nourriture, eau potable, moyens de défense - dont il faudrait tenir compte lors de l’invasion.
maison d’une prostituée. Ils n’avaient pas des intentions impures en se rendant là mais cherchaient un moyen de passer inaperçus. Une telle maison offrait une bonne couverture et un cadre propice à la récolte de toutes sortes d’informations. De plus, comme elle se trouvait sur la muraille de la ville (verset #Jos 2:15), elle permettait une fuite rapide. Toutes leurs précautions n’empêchèrent pas que l’on repère leur présence (versets #Jos 2:2-3). Dans sa providence souveraine, Dieu les avait conduits là pour le salut d’une prostituée. Rahab deviendrait ainsi la preuve vivante du fait qu’il peut accorder le salut par la foi aussi bien à une femme au bas de l’échelle sociale qu’à un homme honorable comme Abraham (cf. #Ja 2:18-25). Un autre élément important, c’est que, par la grâce de Dieu, elle ferait partie de la lignée messianique (#Mt 1:5).
2 On dit au roi de Jéricho: Voici, des hommes d’entre les enfants d’Israël sont arrivés ici, cette nuit, pour explorer le pays.
au roi. Le territoire sur lequel il régnait n’était pas vaste: il se limitait à la ville et à ses environs. D’autres rois sont mentionnés plus loin (cf. #Jos 8:23 ; #Jos 12:24).
3 Le roi de Jéricho envoya dire à Rahab : Fais sortir les hommes qui sont venus chez toi, qui sont entrés dans ta maison ; car c’est pour explorer tout le pays qu’ils sont venus.
4 La femme prit les deux hommes, et les cacha ; et elle dit : Il est vrai que ces hommes sont arrivés chez moi, mais je ne savais pas d’où ils étaient ;
2:4-5 Cf. versets #Jos 2:9-11. Le mensonge est un péché pour Dieu (#Ex 20: 16), puisque lui-même ne peut mentir (#Tit 1:2). Dieu a fait l’éloge de la foi exprimée par Rahab aux versets #Jos 2:9-16 (#Hé 11:31 ; #Ja 2:25), et non de son mensonge. Il ne ferme jamais les yeux sur le péché, mais tous les hommes sont coupables (cf. #Ro 3:23) et ont besoin de son pardon. Il honore la foi sincère, aussi faible soit-elle, et accorde sa grâce salvatrice (#Ex 34:7).
5 et, comme la porte a dû se fermer de nuit, ces hommes sont sortis ; j’ignore où ils sont allés : hâtez-vous de les poursuivre et vous les atteindrez.
6 Elle les avait fait monter sur le toit, et les avait cachés sous des tiges de lin, qu’elle avait arrangées sur le toit.
tiges de lin. Ces plantes fibreuses, utilisées pour faire du lin, pouvaient mesurer environ 50 cm. On exposait les tiges au soleil sur les toits (qui étaient plats) pour les sécher.
7 Ces gens les poursuivirent par le chemin qui mène au gué du Jourdain, et l’on ferma la porte après qu’ils furent sortis.
8 ¶ Avant que les espions se couchassent, Rahab monta vers eux sur le toit
9 et leur dit : L’Éternel, je le sais, vous a donné ce pays, la terreur que vous inspirez nous a saisis, et tous les habitants du pays tremblent devant vous.
10 Car nous avons appris comment, à votre sortie d’Égypte, l’Éternel a mis à sec devant vous les eaux de la mer Rouge, et comment vous avez traité les deux rois des Amoréens au-delà du Jourdain, Sihon et Og, que vous avez dévoués par interdit.
11 Nous l’avons appris, et nous avons perdu courage, et tous nos esprits sont abattus à votre aspect ; car c’est l’Éternel, votre Dieu, qui est Dieu en haut dans les cieux et en bas sur la terre.
Dieu en haut dans les cieux et en bas sur la terre. Elle reconnaissait ainsi l’Éternel comme le Créateur souverain qui contrôle tout ce qui existe (cf. #De 4:39 ; #Ac 14: 15 ; #Ac 17:23-28), et donc comme le Dieu suprême.
12 Et maintenant, je vous prie, jurez-moi par l’Éternel que vous aurez pour la maison de mon père la même bonté que j’ai eue pour vous. (2-13) Donnez-moi l’assurance
13 que vous laisserez vivre mon père, ma mère, mes frères, mes sœurs, et tous ceux qui leur appartiennent, et que vous nous sauverez de la mort.
14 Ces hommes lui répondirent : Nous sommes prêts à mourir pour vous, si vous ne divulguez pas ce qui nous concerne ; et quand l’Éternel nous donnera le pays, nous agirons envers toi avec bonté et fidélité.
15 Elle les fit descendre avec une corde par la fenêtre, car la maison qu’elle habitait était sur la muraille de la ville.
2:15-16 La maison se trouvait sur la muraille de la ville, et le Jourdain se trouvait à l’est (verset #Jos 2:7). Les montagnes accidentées situées à l’ouest offraient de bonnes cachettes.
16 Elle leur dit : Allez du côté de la montagne, de peur que ceux qui vous poursuivent ne vous rencontrent ; cachez-vous là pendant trois jours, jusqu’à ce qu’ils soient de retour ; après cela, vous suivrez votre chemin.
17 Ces hommes lui dirent : Voici de quelle manière nous serons quittes du serment que tu nous as fait faire.
18 A notre entrée dans le pays, attache ce cordon de fil cramoisi à la fenêtre par laquelle tu nous fais descendre, et recueille auprès de toi dans la maison ton père, ta mère, tes frères, et toute la famille de ton père.
cordon. Mot hébreu différent de celui traduit par « corde » au verset 15. Le cramoisi, contrairement au brun, au gris, etc., signalerait de façon bien visible la maison à épargner. Cette couleur convenait bien aussi pour ceux dont le « sang » (verset #Jos 2:19) était sous la protection divine.
19 Si quelqu’un d’eux sort de la porte de ta maison pour aller dehors, son sang retombera sur sa tête, et nous en serons innocents ; mais si on met la main sur l’un quelconque de ceux qui seront avec toi dans la maison, son sang retombera sur notre tête.
20 Et si tu divulgues ce qui nous concerne, nous serons quittes du serment que tu nous as fait faire.
21 Elle répondit : Qu’il en soit selon vos paroles. Elle prit ainsi congé d’eux, et ils s’en allèrent. Et elle attacha le cordon de cramoisi à la fenêtre.
22 ¶ Ils partirent, et arrivèrent à la montagne, où ils restèrent trois jours, jusqu’à ce que ceux qui les poursuivaient fussent de retour. Ceux qui les poursuivaient les cherchèrent par tout le chemin, mais ils ne les trouvèrent pas.
23 Les deux hommes s’en retournèrent, descendirent de la montagne, et passèrent le Jourdain. Ils vinrent auprès de Josué, fils de Nun, et lui racontèrent tout ce qui leur était arrivé.
24 Ils dirent à Josué : Certainement, l’Éternel a livré tout le pays entre nos mains, et même tous les habitants du pays tremblent devant nous.
JOSHUA 2 : 1 to 24 + NOTES TO JOHN MACARTHUR
1 ¶ And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go, view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into the house of a prostitute named Rahab, and lodged there.
Acacia ... Jericho. Acacia, or the valley of acacias, was in the hills, about 12 km east of the Jordan (cf. #Jos 3: 1), and Jericho about 12 km west.
two spies. These spies were to provide information on the different topography elements, food, drinking water defenses - which should be considered during the invasion.
house of a prostitute. They did not have impure intentions by going there, but looking for a way to pass unnoticed. This house had good coverage and a framework for the collection of all kinds of information. Moreover, as it was on the wall of the city (verse #Jos 2:15), it allowed a quick escape. All precautions did not prevent that one mark their presence (verses #Jos 2: 2-3). In his sovereign providence, God led them there for the salvation of a prostitute. Rahab would become living proof of the fact that it can give salvation by faith as well to a woman at the bottom of the social ladder as an honorable man like Abraham (cf. #Ja 2: 18-25). Another important element is that, by the grace of God, it would be part of the Messianic line (#Mt 1: 5).
2 was told the king of Jericho, Behold, men of the children of Israel have come here tonight to spy out the land.
to the king. The territory over which he ruled was not large: it was limited to the city and its surroundings. Other kings are mentioned below (see #Jos 8:23; #Jos 12:24).
3 The king of Jericho sent to Rahab: Bring out the men who came to you, who entered your house; for it is to explore the country they came.
4 The woman took the two men and hid them; and she said, It is true that these men came to me, but I do not know where they were;
2: 4-5 #Jos see verses 2: 9-11. Lying is a sin to God (#Ex 20: 16), since he himself can not lie (#Tit 1: 2). God has praised the faith expressed by Rahab #Jos in verses 2: 9-16 (# Heb 11:31; #Ja 2:25), and not of his lie. He never condones sin, but all men are guilty (cf. #Ro 3:23) and need forgiveness. It honors the true faith, as small as it is, and grant His saving grace (#Ex 34: 7).
5 and, as the door had shut at night, the men went out; I do not know where they went: make haste to pursue you and overtake them.
6 But she had brought them up to the roof, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid on the roof.
flax stems. These fibrous plants, used to flax can measure about 50 cm. It exposed the rods in the sun on the roof (which was flat) to dry.
7 And the men pursued after them the way to the ford of the Jordan, and they closed the door when they were come.
¶ 8 Before they were laid down, she came up to them on the roof
9 and said, Jehovah, I know, gave you the land, the fear of you has fallen on us, and all the inhabitants of the land tremble before you.
10 For we have heard how out of Egypt, the Lord has to dry up the water of the Red Sea, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan, Sehon and Og you utterly destroyed.
11 We have learned, and we have lost heart, and all our hearts melted because of you; for it is the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.
God in heaven above and on the earth below. It thus acknowledged the LORD as the sovereign Creator who controls all that exists (see # of 4:39; #AC 14: 15; #AC 17: 23-28), and thus as the supreme God.
12 And now, I pray you, swear to me by the Lord that you will have for the house of my father the same kindness I had for you. (2-13) Give me the assurance
13 that you will save alive my father, my mother, my brothers, my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.
14 And the men answered him, We are ready to die for you, if you do not tell this business of us; and when the LORD gives us the land, we will deal kindly and truly with you.
15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window, for the house she lived in was on the city wall.
2: 15-16 The house was on the city wall, and the Jordan was to the east (verse #Jos 2: 7). The rugged mountains to the west offered good hiding places.
16 She said to them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you you; hide yourselves there for three days until they return; after that, you go your way.
17 The men said to him: Behold how we will be quit of your oath which you have made us swear.
18 Upon entry into the country, attaches this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you shall gather into your house your father, your mother, your brothers, and the family of your father.
cord. different Hebrew word that translates to "rope" in verse 15. The crimson, unlike the brown, gray, etc., would signal clearly visible home to save. This color also well suited for those with "blood" (verse 2:19 #Jos) was under divine protection.
19 If any one goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood on his head, and we shall be innocent; but if you put your hands on any of those who are with you in the house, his blood will be on our head.
20 And if you utter this, we will be quit of your oath which you have made us swear.
21 And she said, According to your words. She took leave of them well, and they departed. And she bound the scarlet cord in the window.
22 ¶ And they went, and came to the mountain, and remained there three days, until the pursuers were returned. Those pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but they did not find them.
23 The two men returned, descended from the mountain, and passed over. They came to Joshua son of Nun, and told him all that had happened to them.
24 They said to Joshua, the Lord has given all the land into our hands, and even all the inhabitants of the land tremble before us.
