1 ¶ Les hommes d’Éphraïm se rassemblèrent, partirent pour le nord, et dirent à Jephthé : Pourquoi es-tu allé combattre les fils d’Ammon sans nous avoir appelés à marcher avec toi ? Nous voulons incendier ta maison et te brûler avec elle.
Pourquoi es-tu allé … sans nous avoir appelés. Cette nouvelle menace des Éphraïmites (cf. #Jug 8:1) était due à la jalousie qu’ils éprouvaient face au succès de Jephthé et, peut-être, à leur désir de jouir d’une partie de son butin de guerre. Ils menacèrent de brûler non seulement sa maison, mais lui avec!
2 Jephthé leur répondit : Nous avons eu de grandes contestations, moi et mon peuple, avec les fils d’Ammon ; et quand je vous ai appelés, vous ne m’avez pas délivré de leurs mains.
3 Voyant que tu ne venais pas à mon secours, j’ai exposé ma vie, et j’ai marché contre les fils d’Ammon. L’Éternel les a livrés entre mes mains. Pourquoi donc aujourd’hui montez-vous contre moi pour me faire la guerre ?
4 Jephthé rassembla tous les hommes de Galaad, et livra bataille à Éphraïm. Les hommes de Galaad battirent Éphraïm, parce que les Éphraïmites disaient : Vous êtes des fugitifs d’Éphraïm ! Galaad est au milieu d’Ephraïm, au milieu de Manassé !
fugitifs. Les Éphraïmites se moquaient des hommes de Galaad en les présentant comme des êtres d’un niveau inférieur, exclus de leur propre groupe. La riposte fut cinglante.
5 Galaad s’empara des gués du Jourdain du côté d’Éphraïm. Et quand l’un des fuyards d’Éphraïm disait : Laissez-moi passer ! les hommes de Galaad lui demandaient : Es-tu Ephraïmite ? Il répondait : Non.
6 Ils lui disaient alors : Hé bien, dis Schibboleth. Et il disait Sibboleth, car il ne pouvait pas bien prononcer. Sur quoi les hommes de Galaad le saisissaient, et l’égorgeaient près des gués du Jourdain. Il périt en ce temps-là quarante-deux mille hommes d’Éphraïm.
Schibboleth. La méthode permettant de reconnaître un Éphraïmite consistait à lui faire prononcer ce mot. En prononçant « s » au lieu de « ch », il révélait son origine et était mis à mort sur la base de ce seul indice.
7 Jephthé fut juge en Israël pendant six ans ; puis Jephthé, le Galaadite, mourut, et fut enterré dans l’une des villes de Galaad.
8 ¶ Après lui, Ibtsan de Bethléhem fut juge en Israël.
9 Il eut trente fils, il maria trente filles au dehors, et il fit venir pour ses fils trente filles du dehors. Il fut juge en Israël pendant sept ans ;
12:9, 14 Une si grande famille laisse supposer qu’il y avait eu plusieurs épouses. La polygamie était tolérée, mais elle n’était pas, pour autant, conforme au plan de Dieu pour le mariage (#Ge 2:24). Il était tentant pour un homme d’avoir beaucoup d’enfants afin d’étendre son pouvoir et son influence.
10 puis Ibtsan mourut, et fut enterré à Bethléhem.
11 Après lui, Elon de Zabulon fut juge en Israël. Il fut juge en Israël pendant dix ans ;
12 puis Elon de Zabulon mourut, et fut enterré à Ajalon, dans le pays de Zabulon.
13 Après lui, Abdon, fils d’Hillel, le Pirathonite, fut juge en Israël.
14 Il eut quarante fils et trente petits-fils, qui montaient sur soixante-dix ânons. Il fut juge en Israël pendant huit ans ;
15 puis Abdon, fils d’Hillel, le Pirathonite, mourut, et fut enterré à Pirathon, dans le pays d’Éphraïm, sur la montagne des Amalécites.

1 ¶ The men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, to the north, and said to Jephthah, Why did you go to fight the Ammonites son not call us to go with you? We want to burn your house and burn you with it.
Why did you go ... not call us. This new threat of Ephraim (cf. #Jug 8: 1) was due to jealousy at the success they experienced Jephthah and, perhaps, their desire to enjoy some of his spoils of war. They threatened to burn not only his house, but with her!
2 Jephthah said to them: We had great strife, I and my people, with the son of Ammon; and when I called you, you did not save me out of their hands.
3 Seeing that you did not come to my rescue, I took my life, and I walked against the son of Ammon. The LORD delivered them into my hands. Why then today you come up against me to fight against me?
4 Then Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim. The men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because Ephraim said, You are fugitives of Ephraim! Gilead is in the midst of Ephraim, in the midst of Manasseh
fugitives. Ephraimites mocked the men of Gilead presenting them as beings of a lower level, excluded from their own group. The response was scathing.
5 Gilead took the fords of the Jordan side of Ephraim. And when one of the fugitives of Ephraim said, Let me go! the men of Gilead asked him, Are you an Ephraimite? He answered: No.
6 Then said they unto him: Hey, Say now Shibboleth. And he said Sibboleth, because he could not pronounce it. What Gilead seized the men, and slew him at the passages of Jordan. There fell at that time forty-two thousand of Ephraim.
Shibboleth. The method for recognizing an Ephraimite was to make him say the word. In pronouncing "s" instead of "ch", he revealed his origin and was put to death on the basis of this single index.
7 Jephthah judged Israel six years; and Jephthah the Gileadite died, and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.
8 ¶ And after him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.
9 He had thirty son, and thirty daughters abroad, and he sent for his son thirty daughters from abroad. He judged Israel for seven years;
12: 9, 14 A large family suggests that there had been several wives. Polygamy was tolerated, but she was not, however, conform to God's plan for marriage (#Ge 2:24). It was tempting for a man to have many children in order to expand its power and influence.
10 Then died Ibzan, and was buried in Bethlehem.
11 After him, Elon of Zebulun judged Israel. He judged Israel for ten years;
12 Elon of Zebulun then died and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.
13 After him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel.
14 He had forty son and son thirty nephews, that rode on seventy ass colts. He judged Israel for eight years;
15 And Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the mount of the Amalekites.
