1 ¶ Samson partit pour Gaza ; il y vit une femme prostituée, et il entra chez elle.
16:1-3 Dieu fit preuve de miséricorde en permettant à Samson d’échapper aux conséquences de ce péché, mais le châtiment n’était que reporté. Le péché nous aveugle et finit par nous broyer (v. #Jug 16: 21).
2 On dit aux gens de Gaza : Samson est arrivé ici. Et ils l’environnèrent, et se tinrent en embuscade toute la nuit à la porte de la ville. Ils restèrent tranquilles toute la nuit, disant : Au point du jour, nous le tuerons.
3 Samson demeura couché jusqu’à minuit. Vers minuit, il se leva ; et il saisit les battants de la porte de la ville et les deux poteaux, les arracha avec la barre, les mit sur ses épaules, et les porta sur le sommet de la montagne qui est en face d’Hébron.

4 ¶ Après cela, il aima une femme dans la vallée de Sorek. Elle se nommait Delila.
aima … Delila. Son attirance pour les femmes peu recommandables et loyales aux Philistins se réveilla (cf. #Pr 6:27-28). En rendant visite chaque jour à celle-ci (v. #Jug 16: 16), il finit par se laisser prendre au piège de ses ruses.
5 Les princes des Philistins montèrent vers elle, et lui dirent : Flatte-le, pour savoir d’où lui vient sa grande force et comment nous pourrions nous rendre maîtres de lui ; nous le lierons pour le dompter, et nous te donnerons chacun mille et cent sicles d’argent.
mille cent sicles d’argent. Puisqu’il y avait cinq princes, cela faisait une somme importante pour Delila.
6 Delila dit à Samson : Dis-moi, je te prie, d’où vient ta grande force, et avec quoi il faudrait te lier pour te dompter.
7 Samson lui dit : Si on me liait avec sept cordes fraîches, qui ne fussent pas encore sèches, je deviendrais faible et je serais comme un autre homme.
Samson lui dit. En se lançant dans une sorte de poker menteur, Samson perdit petit à petit sa virilité. Il mit son secret en péril et finit par le révéler (« il lui ouvrit tout son cœur », v. 17). Il était possible de l’acheter, et Delila y parvint. Comparer avec la vente par Ésaü de son droit d’aînesse (#Ge 25:29-33) et la trahison de Judas (#Mt 26:14-16).
8 Les princes des Philistins apportèrent à Delila sept cordes fraîches, qui n’étaient pas encore sèches. Et elle le lia avec ces cordes.
9 Or des gens se tenaient en embuscade chez elle, dans une chambre. Elle lui dit : Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson ! Et il rompit les cordes, comme se rompt un cordon d’étoupe quand il sent le feu. Et l’on ne connut point d’où venait sa force.
10 Delila dit à Samson : Voici, tu t’es joué de moi, tu m’as dit des mensonges. Maintenant, je te prie, indique-moi avec quoi il faut te lier.
11 Il lui dit : Si on me liait avec des cordes neuves, dont on ne se fût jamais servi, je deviendrais faible et je serais comme un autre homme.

12 Delila prit des cordes neuves, avec lesquelles elle le lia. Puis elle lui dit : Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson ! Or des gens se tenaient en embuscade dans une chambre. Et il rompit comme un fil les cordes qu’il avait aux bras.
13 Delila dit à Samson : Jusqu’à présent tu t’es joué de moi, tu m’as dit des mensonges. Déclare-moi avec quoi il faut te lier. Il lui dit : Tu n’as qu’à tisser les sept tresses de ma tête avec la chaîne du tissu.
14 Et elle les fixa par la cheville. Puis elle lui dit : Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson ! Et il se réveilla de son sommeil, et il arracha la cheville du tissu et le tissu.
15 Elle lui dit : Comment peux-tu dire: Je t’aime ! puisque ton cœur n’est pas avec moi ? Voilà trois fois que tu t’es joué de moi, et tu ne m’as pas déclaré d’où vient ta grande force.
16 Comme elle était chaque jour à le tourmenter et à l’importuner par ses instances, son âme s’impatienta à la mort,
17 il lui ouvrit tout son cœur, et lui dit : Le rasoir n’a point passé sur ma tête, parce que je suis consacré à Dieu dès le ventre de ma mère. Si j’étais rasé, ma force m’abandonnerait, je deviendrais faible, et je serais comme tout autre homme.
Si j’étais rasé. La force de Samson lui venait de sa relation unique avec Dieu, qui reposait elle-même sur son naziréat, dont les longs cheveux n’étaient qu’un signe. Lorsque Delila devint plus importante que Dieu à ses yeux, sa force disparut.
18 ¶ Delila, voyant qu’il lui avait ouvert tout son cœur, envoya appeler les princes des Philistins, et leur fit dire : Montez cette fois, car il m’a ouvert tout son cœur. Et les princes des Philistins montèrent vers elle, et apportèrent l’argent dans leurs mains.
19 Elle l’endormit sur ses genoux. Et ayant appelé un homme, elle rasa les sept tresses de la tête de Samson, et commença ainsi à le dompter. Il perdit sa force.
20 Elle dit alors : Les Philistins sont sur toi, Samson ! Et il se réveilla de son sommeil, et dit : Je m’en tirerai comme les autres fois, et je me dégagerai. Il ne savait pas que l’Éternel s’était retiré de lui.
l’Éternel s’était retiré de lui. C’était une manifestation tragique de la colère divine « d’abandon »: le péché de Samson lui avait valu de perdre la puissance que procurait la présence divine. Le même principe apparaît en #Ge 6:3 ; #Pr 1:24-31 ; #Mt 15: 14 ; #Ro 1:24-32.
21 Les Philistins le saisirent, et lui crevèrent les yeux ; ils le firent descendre à Gaza, et le lièrent avec des chaînes d’airain. Il tournait la meule dans la prison.
Gaza. C’était la dernière ville côtière qu’un voyageur traversait, au sud-ouest de la région d’Israël, en se rendant de Jérusalem en Égypte. Samson connut l’humiliation à près de 65 km de Tsorea, son lieu de naissance.
22 ¶ Cependant les cheveux de sa tête recommençaient à croître, depuis qu’il avait été rasé.
ses cheveux recommençaient à croître. Ses cheveux se développaient parallèlement à sa repentance, et sa force parallèlement à ses cheveux.
23 Or les princes des Philistins s’assemblèrent pour offrir un grand sacrifice à Dagon, leur dieu, et pour se réjouir. Ils disaient : Notre dieu a livré entre nos mains Samson, notre ennemi.
Dagon. Dieu de la mer, représenté avec une tête d’homme et un corps de poisson.
24 Et quand le peuple le vit, ils célébrèrent leur dieu, en disant : Notre dieu a livré entre nos mains notre ennemi, celui qui ravageait notre pays, et qui multipliait nos morts.
ils célébrèrent leur dieu. La situation était particulièrement triste: le péché d’une personne amenait des incroyants à chanter les louanges d’un faux dieu, alors que l’Éternel seul est digne de louange.
25 Dans la joie de leur cœur, ils dirent: Qu’on appelle Samson, et qu’il nous divertisse ! Ils firent sortir Samson de la prison, et il joua devant eux. Ils le placèrent entre les colonnes.
26 Et Samson dit au jeune homme qui le tenait par la main : Laisse-moi, afin que je puisse toucher les colonnes sur lesquelles repose la maison et m’appuyer contre elles.
27 La maison était remplie d’hommes et de femmes ; tous les princes des Philistins étaient là, et il y avait sur le toit environ trois mille personnes, hommes et femmes, qui regardaient Samson jouer.
28 Alors Samson invoqua l’Éternel, et dit : Seigneur Éternel ! souviens-toi de moi, je te prie ; ô Dieu ! donne-moi de la force seulement cette fois, et que d’un seul coup je tire vengeance des Philistins pour mes deux yeux !
souviens-toi de moi, je te prie. C’était une prière exprimant à la fois la repentance et la confiance qui jaillissait ainsi de Samson.
29 Et Samson embrassa les deux colonnes du milieu sur lesquelles reposait la maison, et il s’appuya contre elles ; l’une était à sa droite, et l’autre à sa gauche.
16:29-30 Certains temples philistins avaient un toit qui surplombait une cour, soutenu par des colonnes de bois dont le socle était en pierre. Les piliers centraux étaient rapprochés pour assurer un soutien supplémentaire au toit. La célébration de la victoire et les tourments infligés au prisonnier avaient attiré une grande foule. Ayant retrouvé sa force grâce au renouvellement accordé par Dieu, Samson parvint à renverser les colonnes, et avec elles le toit, si bien que la victoire se situa désormais du côté d’Israël, et non de celui des Philistins. Il mourut au nom de son pays et de l’Éternel. Il ne s’agissait pas d’un suicide, mais plutôt de l’exercice du jugement de Dieu sur ses ennemis et du désir de Samson de lui abandonner sa vie. À la fois le plus grand champion d’Israël et un homme prisonnier de ses passions, capable des pires péchés, ce juge fait partie de la liste des héros de la foi (cf. #Hé 11:32).
30 Samson dit : Que je meure avec les Philistins ! Il se pencha fortement, et la maison tomba sur les princes et sur tout le peuple qui y était. Ceux qu’il fit périr à sa mort furent plus nombreux que ceux qu’il avait tués pendant sa vie.
31 Ses frères et toute la maison de son père descendirent, et l’emportèrent. Lorsqu’ils furent remontés, ils l’enterrèrent entre Tsorea et Eschthaol dans le sépulcre de Manoach, son père. Il avait été juge en Israël pendant vingt ans.

1 ¶ Samson went to Gaza he saw a prostitute and went in to her.
16: 1-3 God showed mercy by allowing Samson to escape the consequences of sin, but the punishment was only postponed. Sin blinds us and eventually we grind (v #Jug. 16: 21).
2 People are told Gaza Samson has come here. And they surrounded the place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate. They were quiet all night, saying, At dawn we'll kill him.
3 Samson lay until midnight. Around midnight, he arose; and took the doors of the city gate and the two posts, and plucked them up, bar, put them on his shoulders and carried them to the top of the mountain that is before Hebron.

¶ 4 After this he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek. Her name was Delilah.
... loved Delilah. His attraction to women unsavory and loyal to the Philistines woke up (see #Pr 6: 27-28). By making daily visits to it (v #Jug. 16: 16), he ends up caught in the trap of his tricks.
5 The lords of the Philistines came up to her and said to her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength and how we can make ourselves masters of it; we may bind him to subdue, and we will give thee each eleven hundred pieces of silver.
1100 pieces of silver. Since there were five princes, it made a lot of money for Delilah.
6 Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength, and how you might be bound to afflict you.
7 Samson said to her, If they bind me with seven green cords that were never dried, I would become weak, and be as another man.
Samson said. By engaging in a kind of liar's poker, Samson gradually lost his manhood. He put his secret at risk and eventually reveal ( "he told her all his heart," v. 17). It was possible to buy and Delilah succeeded. Compare with the sale by Esau of his birthright (#Ge 25: 29-33) and the betrayal of Judas (#Mt 26: 14-16).
8 The lords of the Philistines brought her seven green cords that were never dried. And she bound him with them.
9 Now there were men lying in wait with her in a room. She said: The Philistines are upon you, Samson! And he broke the cords, as breaks a thread of tow when it smells fire. And was not known where his strength.
10 Delilah said to Samson, Behold, thou hast mocked me, you told me lies. Now, I pray thee, show me how you might be bound.
11 He said to him, If they bind me with new ropes that have not been done, then I would become weak, and be as another man.
new ropes. See #Jug 15: 13.
12 Delilah took new ropes, and bound him. Then she said: The Philistines are upon you, Samson! Or people stood in wait in a room. And he broke like a thread cords on his arms.
13 Delilah said to Samson, Until now you have mocked me, you told me lies. Declare me with what you might be bound. He said: You have only to weave the seven locks of my head with the fabric.
14 And she fastened it with the pin. Then she said: The Philistines are upon you, Samson! And he awoke from his sleep, and plucked away the pin of the fabric and the fabric.
15 She said: How can you say I love you! because your heart is not with me? These three times thou hast deceived me, and you have not told me where your great strength.
16 As she was every day to torment and annoy with him, that his soul was vexed to death,
17 He told her all his heart, and said razor has passed the point of my head, because I am devoted to God from the womb. If I were shaved, my strength would leave me, I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
If I were shaved. Samson's strength came from his unique relationship with God, which itself was based on his separation whose long hair was a sign. When Delilah became more important than God in his eyes, his strength was gone.
18 ¶ Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called the lords of the Philistines, and made saying, Come up this once, for he has told me all his heart. And the lords of the Philistines came up to her and brought money in their hands.
19 She made him sleep on her lap. And called for a man, she shaved the seven locks of Samson's head, and so began to subdue him. He lost his strength.
20 She said, The Philistines are upon you, Samson! And he awoke from his sleep and said, I will go out as before and shake myself free. He did not know that the LORD had left him.
the LORD had left him. It was a tragic manifestation of divine wrath "abandonment" Samson's sin had brought him to lose the power afforded the divine presence. The same appears #Ge 6: 3; #Pr 1: 24-31; #Mt 15: 14; #Ro 1: 24-32.
21 the Philistines, and put out his eyes; they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters. He did grind in the prison.
Gaza. It was the last coastal town a traveler crossing, south-western region of Israel, visiting Jerusalem in Egypt. Samson knew the humiliation nearly 65 km from Zorah, his birthplace.
22 ¶ But the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaved.
his hair began to grow. His hair grew along with his repentance, and his strength along with his hair.
23 Now the lords of the Philistines gathered to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice. They said, Our god hath delivered into our hands Samson our enemy.
Dagon. God of the sea, represented with a human head and a fish body.
24 And when the people saw him, they praised their god, saying, Our god hath delivered into our hands our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, and who multiplied our dead.
they praised their god. The situation was particularly sad: the sin of a person brought unbelievers to sing the praises of a false god, then that Jehovah alone is worthy of praise.
25 In the joy of their heart, they said, Call for Samson, that he may entertain us! They called for Samson out of the prison, and he made them. They set him between the columns.
26 And Samson said to the lad that held him by the hand, Let me, so I can feel the pillars upon which the house and lean against them.
27 The house was full of men and women; all the lords of the Philistines were there, and there were on the roof about three thousand men and women, who saw while Samson performed.
28 Then Samson called to the LORD, and said, O Lord! remember me, I pray thee; O God! give me strength only this time, and suddenly I avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes!
remember me, I pray thee. It was a prayer expressing both repentance and trust that flowed so Samson.
29 And Samson grasped the two middle pillars upon which the house rested, and he leaned against them; one on his right and one on his left.
16: 29-30 Some temples Philistines had a roof overlooking a courtyard, supported by wooden columns whose base was in stone. The central pillars were pushed together to provide additional support to the roof. The victory celebration and torment inflicted on the prisoner had attracted a large crowd. Having regained his strength through the renewal granted by God, Samson managed to reverse the columns, and with them the roof, so the victory is situa now on Israel's side, and not that of the Philistines. He died on behalf of his country and of the Lord. It was not a suicide, but rather the exercise of God's judgment on his enemies and desire for Samson to abandon his life. At once the greatest champion of Israel and a man prisoner of his passions, capable of the worst sins, that judge is part of the list of heroes of faith (cf. Heb 11:32 #).
30 Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines! He bowed himself, and the house fell upon the lords and all the people that were there. That he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.
31 His brothers and all the house of his father came down, and took him. When they were come up, they buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah his father. He had judged Israel twenty years.
