20 ¶ Les pharisiens demandèrent à Jésus quand viendrait le royaume de Dieu. Il leur répondit : Le royaume de Dieu ne vient pas de manière à frapper les regards.
21 On ne dira point : Il est ici, ou : Il est là. Car voici, le royaume de Dieu est au milieu de vous.
22 Et il dit aux disciples : Des jours viendront où vous désirerez voir l’un des jours du Fils de l’homme, et vous ne le verrez point.
23 On vous dira : Il est ici, il est là. N’y allez pas, ne courez pas après.
24 Car, comme l’éclair resplendit et brille d’une extrémité du ciel à l’autre, ainsi sera le Fils de l’homme en son jour.
25 Mais il faut auparavant qu’il souffre beaucoup, et qu’il soit rejeté par cette génération.
26 Ce qui arriva du temps de Noé arrivera de même aux jours du Fils de l’homme.
27 Les hommes mangeaient, buvaient, se mariaient et mariaient leurs enfants, jusqu’au jour où Noé entra dans l’arche ; le déluge vint, et les fit tous périr.
28 Ce qui arriva du temps de Lot arrivera pareillement. Les hommes mangeaient, buvaient, achetaient, vendaient, plantaient, bâtissaient ;
29 mais le jour où Lot sortit de Sodome, une pluie de feu et de soufre tomba du ciel, et les fit tous périr.
30 Il en sera de même le jour où le Fils de l’homme paraîtra.
31 En ce jour-là, que celui qui sera sur le toit, et qui aura ses effets dans la maison, ne descende pas pour les prendre ; et que celui qui sera dans les champs ne retourne pas non plus en arrière.
32 Souvenez-vous de la femme de Lot.
33 Celui qui cherchera à sauver sa vie la perdra, et celui qui la perdra la retrouvera.
34 Je vous le dis, en cette nuit-là, de deux personnes qui seront dans un même lit, l’une sera prise et l’autre laissée ;
35 de deux femmes qui moudront ensemble, l’une sera prise et l’autre laissée.
36 De deux hommes qui seront dans un champ, l’un sera pris et l’autre laissé.
37 Les disciples lui dirent : Où sera-ce, Seigneur ? Et il répondit : Où sera le corps, là s’assembleront les aigles.

quand viendrait le royaume de Dieu. Il est possible qu’ils aient posé cette question avec une intention moqueuse, car ils avaient déjà acquis la conviction qu’il n’était pas le Messie.
ne vient pas de manière à frapper les regards. Les pharisiens croyaient que le triomphe du Messie serait immédiat. Ils espéraient qu’il viendrait pour chasser l’occupant romain et établir un royaume millénaire. Mais les projets de Christ étaient bien différents: il inaugurait une ère durant laquelle le royaume serait rendu manifeste par le règne de Dieu dans le cœur des hommes, par le moyen de la foi en leur Sauveur (v. #Lu 17: 21 ; cf. #Ro 14: 17). Ce royaume ne serait ni confiné à une région géographique particulière ni visible aux yeux humains. Il viendrait tranquillement, de manière invisible, sans le faste et la splendeur habituellement associés à l’arrivée d’un roi. Jésus ne dit pas pour autant que les promesses de l’A.T. concernant un royaume terrestre sont annulées, mais que la manifestation terrestre et visible du royaume est encore à venir (#Ap 20:1-6).

au milieu de vous. Dans le cœur des hommes. Le pronom peut difficilement renvoyer aux pharisiens en général.

Des jours viendront. Ce passage introduit un bref discours qui possède quelques similitudes avec le discours sur le mont des Oliviers de #Mt 24:1-25:2.
vous désirerez voir un des jours du Fils de l’homme. Ils voudront le voir physiquement présent. Cela suggère un espoir ardent de son retour pour qu’il fasse régner la justice (cf. #Ap 6:9-11 ; #Ap 22: 20).

il faut … qu’il souffre. La volonté souveraine de Dieu était que Christ meure à la place des pécheurs. Cf. #Lu 9:22 ; #Lu 18:31-33 ; #Lu 24:25-26 ; #Mt 16: 21 ; #Mr 8:31.
17: 28
du temps de Lot. Le jugement était venu soudainement et avait détruit les hommes au milieu de leurs occupations quotidiennes (#Ge 19:24-25). Aucune des activités citées par Jésus en rapport avec le temps de Noé ou de Lot ne constituait un péché en soi. Cependant, les hommes étaient alors si absorbés par les choses de cette vie qu’ils avaient été entièrement pris au dépourvu lorsque le temps du jugement était venu.
17: 31
sur le toit. Une maison typique possédait un toit plat accessible par un escalier extérieur. Le danger serait tellement grand que ceux qui se trouveraient sur le toit devraient fuir sans même entrer dans la maison pour emporter quoi que ce soit.
17: 32 La femme de Lot était morte au seuil même de la délivrance. Son attachement à Sodome était si fort qu’elle s’était attardée et avait regardé en arrière. A cet instant, le jugement l’avait atteinte, juste avant qu’elle ne se trouve en sécurité (#Ge 19: 26).

¶ 20 The Pharisees asked Jesus when the kingdom of God. He answered them, The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed.
21 Neither shall they say: He is here, or lo there. For behold, the kingdom of God is among you.
22 And he said to his disciples: The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.
23 They will tell you: He's here, he's there. Do not go, do not run after.
24 For as the lightning shineth from one end of heaven to the other, so will the Son of man be in his day.
25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
26 This was in the days of Noah, so also in the days of the Son of man.
27 They were eating, drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark; the flood came and destroyed them all.
28 This was in the days of Lot;. They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;
29 but the day Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all.
30 It will be the day when the Son of man is revealed.
31 In that day, that he who is on the housetop, and his goods in the house, not come down to take them; and let him who is in the field not turn back either.
32 Remember Lot's wife.
33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses will find it.
34 I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed, one will be taken and the other left;
35 Two women shall be grinding together; one will be taken and the other left.
36 Two men shall be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.
37 The disciples said to him, Where, Lord? And he answered, Where the body is, there the eagles will gather.

when the kingdom of God. It is possible that they asked this question with a mocking intention, because they had become convinced that he was not the Messiah.
does not come with signs to looks. The Pharisees believed that the triumph of the Messiah would be immediate. They hoped he would come to chase the Roman occupiers and establish a millennial kingdom. But Christ's plans were quite different: he inaugurated an era during which the kingdom would be made manifest by the reign of God in the human heart, through faith in their Savior (v #Lu. 17: 21; cf. . #Ro 14: 17). This kingdom would not be confined to a particular geographic region or visible to human eyes. He would come quietly, invisibly, without the pomp and splendor usually associated with the arrival of a king. Jesus does not say much for the promises of the OT about an earthly kingdom are canceled, but the earthly and visible manifestation of the kingdom is yet to come (#Ap 20: 1-6).
17: 21
among you. In the heart of men. The pronoun is difficult to return to the Pharisees in general.
17: 22
The days will come. This passage introduces a brief speech which has some similarities with the discourse on the Mount of Olives to #Mt 24: 1-25: 2.
you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of man. They will want to see physically. This suggests an ardent hope of returning to it to do justice reign (cf. #Ap 6: 9-11; #Ap 22: 20).
17: 25
... he must suffer. The sovereign will of God was that Christ died instead of sinners. See #Lu 9:22; #Lu 18: 31-33; #Lu 24: 25-26; #Mt 16: 21; #Mr 8:31.
17: 28
the days of Lot. The judgment was suddenly came and destroyed the men in the middle of their daily lives (#Ge 19: 24-25). None of the activities mentioned by Jesus in connection with the time of Noah and Lot was not a sin in itself. However, men were then so absorbed by the things of this life that they had been completely unprepared when the time of judgment had come.
17: 31
on the roof. A typical house had a flat roof reached by an outside staircase. The danger is so great that those who find themselves on the roof should flee without even enter the house to take anything.
17: 32 Lot's wife had died on the very threshold of deliverance. His attachment to Sodom was so strong that she had lingered and looked back. At this time, the judgment had been reached, just before it is safe (#Ge 19: 26).
