1 ¶ Toute l’assemblée éleva la voix et poussa des cris, et le peuple pleura pendant la nuit.
Toute l’assemblée … pleura. Tout Israël se lamenta sur la situation.
2 Tous les enfants d’Israël murmurèrent contre Moïse et Aaron, et toute l’assemblée leur dit : Que ne sommes-nous morts dans le pays d’Égypte, ou que ne sommes-nous morts dans ce désert !
murmurèrent. Ils auraient préféré mourir en Égypte ou dans le désert.
3 Pourquoi l’Éternel nous fait-il aller dans ce pays, où nous tomberons par l’épée, où nos femmes et nos petits enfants deviendront une proie ? Ne vaut-il pas mieux pour nous retourner en Égypte ?
4 Et ils se dirent l’un à l’autre : Nommons un chef, et retournons en Égypte.
Nommons un chef, et retournons en Égypte. Le peuple infidèle était prêt à rejeter le conducteur désigné par Dieu, Moïse.
5 ¶ Moïse et Aaron tombèrent sur leur visage, en présence de toute l’assemblée réunie des enfants d’Israël.
6 Et, parmi ceux qui avaient exploré le pays, Josué, fils de Nun, et Caleb, fils de Jephunné, déchirèrent leurs vêtements,

7 et parlèrent ainsi à toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël : Le pays que nous avons parcouru, pour l’explorer, est un pays très bon, excellent.
14:7-9 Josué et Caleb confirmèrent à nouveau que le pays était bon et redirent leur confiance en l’Éternel pour livrer ce pays et sa population entre leurs mains.
8 Si l’Éternel nous est favorable, il nous mènera dans ce pays, et nous le donnera: c’est un pays où coulent le lait et le miel.
9 Seulement, ne soyez point rebelles contre l’Éternel, et ne craignez point les gens de ce pays, car ils nous serviront de pâture, ils n’ont plus d’ombrage pour les couvrir, l’Éternel est avec nous, ne les craignez point !
10 Toute l’assemblée parlait de les lapider, lorsque la gloire de l’Éternel apparut sur la tente d’assignation, devant tous les enfants d’Israël.
la gloire de l’Éternel apparut. Compte tenu de la violente réaction du peuple face au défi lancé par Josué et Caleb, Dieu intervint.
11 ¶ Et l’Éternel dit à Moïse : Jusqu’à quand ce peuple me méprisera-t-il ? Jusqu’à quand ne croira-t-il pas en moi, malgré tous les prodiges que j’ai faits au milieu de lui ?
méprisera-t-il … ne croira-t-il pas en moi. Les Israélites refusaient de faire confiance à Dieu et à sa puissance et de s’appuyer sur celui qui pouvait leur donner le pays de Canaan, et ce en dépit des miracles qu’il avait accomplis au milieu d’eux.
12 Je le frapperai par la peste, et je le détruirai ; mais je ferai de toi une nation plus grande et plus puissante que lui.
je ferai de toi une nation. Comme dans #Ex 32:9-10, Dieu menace d’éliminer Israël et de recommencer avec la descendance de Moïse. Cette menace, légitime, montre qu’il prenait la rébellion de son peuple au sérieux.
13 Moïse dit à l’Éternel : Les Égyptiens l’apprendront, eux du milieu desquels tu as fait monter ce peuple par ta puissance,
14:13-19 Comme dans #Ex 32:11-13, Moïse intercède en faveur d’Israël en arguant de la réputation de l’Éternel auprès des Égyptiens: ils le penseraient incapable d’achever la délivrance d’Israël et nieraient ainsi sa puissance. L’amour fidèle de Dieu constituait par ailleurs le fondement du pardon qu’il pouvait accorder à son peuple.
14 et ils le diront aux habitants de ce pays. Ils savaient que toi, l’Éternel, tu es au milieu de ce peuple ; que tu apparais visiblement, toi, l’Éternel ; que ta nuée se tient sur lui ; que tu marches devant lui le jour dans une colonne de nuée, et la nuit dans une colonne de feu.
15 Si tu fais mourir ce peuple comme un seul homme, les nations qui ont entendu parler de toi diront:
16 L’Éternel n’avait pas le pouvoir de mener ce peuple dans le pays qu’il avait juré de lui donner : c’est pour cela qu’il l’a égorgé dans le désert.
17 Maintenant, que la puissance du Seigneur se montre dans sa grandeur, comme tu l’as déclaré en disant:
18 L’Éternel est lent à la colère et riche en bonté, il pardonne l’iniquité et la rébellion ; mais il ne tient point le coupable pour innocent, et il punit l’iniquité des pères sur les enfants jusqu’à la troisième et la quatrième génération.
19 Pardonne l’iniquité de ce peuple, selon la grandeur de ta miséricorde, comme tu as pardonné à ce peuple depuis l’Égypte jusqu’ici.
20 ¶ Et l’Éternel dit : Je pardonne, comme tu l’as demandé.
21 Mais, je suis vivant ! et la gloire de l’Éternel remplira toute la terre.
22 Tous ceux qui ont vu ma gloire, et les prodiges que j’ai faits en Égypte et dans le désert, qui m’ont tenté déjà dix fois, et qui n’ont point écouté ma voix,

23 tous ceux-là ne verront point le pays que j’ai juré à leurs pères de leur donner, tous ceux qui m’ont méprisé ne le verront point.
24 Et parce que mon serviteur Caleb a été animé d’un autre esprit, et qu’il a pleinement suivi ma voie, je le ferai entrer dans le pays où il est allé, et ses descendants le posséderont.
mon serviteur Caleb. L’Éternel récompenserait plus tard la foi de Caleb (cf. #Jos 14), reconnu comme l’un de ceux qui avaient craint Dieu et lui avaient fait confiance.
25 Les Amalécites et les Cananéens habitent la vallée : demain, tournez-vous, et partez pour le désert, dans la direction de la mer Rouge.
tournez-vous, et partez pour le désert. À cause de leur refus d’entrer en Canaan, Dieu ordonna aux Israélites de se diriger vers le golfe d’Akaba, au sud, au lieu de continuer en direction du nord.
26 L’Éternel parla à Moïse et à Aaron, et dit:
14:26-35 L’Éternel répondit au désir des Israélites, puisqu’ils furent condamnés à mourir dans le désert (vv. #No 14: 29, #No 14: 35 ; cf. v. #No 14: 2). Alors qu’ils présentaient leurs enfants comme des victimes (v. #No 14: 3), c’est eux qu’il annonça vouloir faire entrer dans le pays promis (vv. #No 14:30-32). La génération présente de rebelles mourrait dans le désert jusqu’à ce que 40 années se soient écoulées: à chaque jour passé à explorer Canaan correspondrait une année.
27 Jusqu’à quand laisserai-je cette méchante assemblée murmurer contre moi ? J’ai entendu les murmures des enfants d’Israël qui murmuraient contre moi.
28 Dis-leur : Je suis vivant ! dit l’Éternel, je vous ferai ainsi que vous avez parlé à mes oreilles.
29 Vos cadavres tomberont dans ce désert. Vous tous, dont on a fait le dénombrement, en vous comptant depuis l’âge de vingt ans et au-dessus, et qui avez murmuré contre moi,
30 vous n’entrerez point dans le pays que j’avais juré de vous faire habiter, excepté Caleb, fils de Jephunné, et Josué, fils de Nun.
31 Et vos petits enfants, dont vous avez dit : Ils deviendront une proie ! je les y ferai entrer, et ils connaîtront le pays que vous avez dédaigné.
32 Vos cadavres, à vous, tomberont dans le désert ;
33 et vos enfants paîtront quarante années dans le désert, et porteront la peine de vos infidélités, jusqu’à ce que vos cadavres soient tous tombés dans le désert.
34 De même que vous avez mis quarante jours à explorer le pays, vous porterez la peine de vos iniquités quarante années, une année pour chaque jour ; et vous saurez ce que c’est que d’être privé de ma présence.
35 Moi, l’Éternel, j’ai parlé ! et c’est ainsi que je traiterai cette méchante assemblée qui s’est réunie contre moi ; ils seront consumés dans ce désert, ils y mourront.
36 ¶ Les hommes que Moïse avait envoyés pour explorer le pays, et qui, à leur retour, avaient fait murmurer contre lui toute l’assemblée, en décriant le pays ;
37 ces hommes, qui avaient décrié le pays, moururent frappés d’une plaie devant l’Éternel.
moururent frappés d’une plaie. Pour indiquer le caractère certain du jugement à venir, les dix espions qui avaient ébranlé la foi du peuple moururent.
38 Josué, fils de Nun, et Caleb, fils de Jephunné, restèrent seuls vivants parmi ces hommes qui étaient allés pour explorer le pays.
39 Moïse rapporta ces choses à tous les enfants d’Israël, et le peuple fut dans une grande désolation.
40 Ils se levèrent de bon matin, et montèrent au sommet de la montagne, en disant: Nous voici ! nous monterons au lieu dont a parlé l’Éternel, car nous avons péché.
41 Moïse dit : Pourquoi transgressez-vous l’ordre de l’Éternel ? Cela ne réussira point.
42 Ne montez pas ! car l’Éternel n’est pas au milieu de vous. Ne vous faites pas battre par vos ennemis.
43 Car les Amalécites et les Cananéens sont là devant vous, et vous tomberiez par l’épée. Parce que vous vous êtes détournés de l’Éternel, l’Éternel ne sera point avec vous.
44 Ils s’obstinèrent à monter au sommet de la montagne ; mais l’arche de l’alliance et Moïse ne sortirent point du milieu du camp.
Ils s’obstinèrent à monter au sommet de la montagne. Dans une attitude d’obstination caractérisée, le peuple rejeta le conseil de Moïse et l’ordre de l’Éternel pour partir en guerre contre les Amalécites. En l’absence de l’aide divine, il fut bien évidemment vaincu.
45 Alors descendirent les Amalécites et les Cananéens qui habitaient cette montagne ; ils les battirent, et les taillèrent en pièces jusqu’à Horma.

1 ¶ And all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried, and the people wept that night.
... All the congregation wept. All Israel bewailed the situation.
2 All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly said to them, we had died in the land of Egypt, or if only we had died in this wilderness!
murmured. They would have preferred to die in Egypt or in the desert.
3 Why the Lord he makes us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our children should be a prey? Would it not be better to return to Egypt?
4 And they said one to another, Let a leader and return to Egypt.
Let us make a captain, and go back to Egypt. The unfaithful people was ready to dismiss the driver designated by God, Moses.
5 ¶ Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before the whole assembled congregation of the children of Israel.
6 And among those who had spied out the land, Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, tore their clothes

7 and they spake unto all the congregation of the children of Israel: The land which we have gone to search it, is a very good land.
14: 7-9 Joshua and Caleb confirmed again that the country was good and redirent their trust in the Lord to deliver this country and its people in their hands.
8 If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us: it is a land flowing with milk and honey.
9 Only do not rebel against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of this country because they will serve us food, they have no shade to cover, the Lord is with us, the Fear not!
10 all the congregation bade stone them with stones, when the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.
the glory of the LORD appeared. Given the violent reaction of the people facing the challenge of Joshua and Caleb, God intervened.
11 ¶ And the Lord said to Moses: How long will this people despise it me? Until when do believe there not in me, for all the signs that I have wrought among them?
despise he ... does he not believe in me. Israel refused to trust God and His power and to rely on the one who could give them the land of Canaan, in spite of the miracles he had performed among them.
12 I will strike them with the pestilence, and will destroy him; I will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they.
I will make of thee a nation. As #Ex 32: 9-10, God threatens to eliminate Israel and start over with the descendants of Moses. This threat, legitimate, shows that he was taking his people's rebellion seriously.
13 Moses said to the LORD, the Egyptians will learn, from among them you brought up this people in thy might,
14: 13-19 As in #Ex 32: 11-13, Moses intercedes on Israel's behalf, arguing that the reputation of the LORD among Egyptians, they would think him incapable of completing the deliverance of Israel and deny and its power. The faithful love of God was also the foundation of forgiveness that he could give to his people.
14 and they will tell the inhabitants of this country. They knew that you, Yahweh, you are among this people; you seen face to face you, Yahweh; that your cloud stands over them; that thou goest before them by day in a pillar of cloud, and by night in a pillar of fire.
15 if thou shalt kill this people as one man, the nations who have heard about you will say:
16 The LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to him that's why he has slain them in the wilderness.
17 Now that the power of the Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,
18 The LORD is slow to anger and rich in kindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but it by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
19 Forgive the iniquity of this people according to thy great mercy, as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt until now.
20 ¶ And the Lord said: I forgive, as you have requested.
21 But I am alive! and the glory of the Lord will fill the earth.
22 All who have seen my glory and the signs which I have done in Egypt and in the wilderness have tempted me these ten times, and have not obeyed my voice,

23, all of them shall see the land I swore to their fathers to give them, all those who despised me shall see it.
24 And because my servant Caleb has been animated by a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his descendants shall possess it.
My servant Caleb. The Lord would reward later Caleb's faith (cf. #Jos 14), recognized as one of those who feared God and had trusted him.
25 The Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valley: tomorrow turn you, and go into the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea.
turn you, and go for the desert. Because of their refusal to enter Canaan, God ordered the Israelites to head to the Gulf of Aqaba in the south instead of continuing to the north.
26 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying:
14: 26-35 And he said the desire of the Israelites, since they were sentenced to die in the desert (vv #No 14: 29 #No. 14: 35; cf. v #No. 14: 2). While they had their children as victims (#No v. 14: 3), it is them that he announced wanting to enter the Promised Land (vv #No. 14: 30-32). This rebellious generation would die in the desert until 40 years have elapsed: every day spent exploring Canaan correspond one year.
27 Until when I bear with this evil congregation murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
28 Say unto them, As I live, says the Lord, I will make you well as you have spoken in my ears.
29 Your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. All of you, and those that were numbered, counting you since the age of twenty years and upward, who have murmured against me,
30 ye shall not enter into the land which I swore to make you dwell, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
31 But your little ones, that you said should be a prey! them will I bring in, and they know the land which ye have despised.
32 Your dead bodies, you, fall in this wilderness;
33 and your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.
34 Just as you put forty days exploring the country, ye bear your iniquities forty years, one year for each day; and you will know what it is like to be deprived of my presence.
35 I the LORD have spoken! and this is how I this evil congregation who are gathered together against me; they shall be consumed in the desert, there they shall die.
¶ 36 The men whom Moses sent to explore the land and who, in return, had to murmur against him the whole assembly, decrying the country;
37 these men who had disparaged the land, died by the plague before the LORD.
died by the plague. To indicate the certainty of coming judgment, the ten spies who had shaken the faith of the people died.
38 Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those men that went to explore the country.
39 Moses told these sayings to all the children of Israel, and the people were in great mourning.
40 And they rose up early and went to the top of the mountain, saying: Here we are! we will go up to the place which the LORD spoke, for we have sinned.
41 Moses said, Why do you transgress the commandment of the LORD? It shall not prosper.
42 Do not stand! for the LORD is not among you. Do not be defeated by your enemies.
43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned away from the LORD, the LORD will not be with you.
44 But they presumed to go up to the mountain top; But the ark of the covenant and Moses did not out of the camp.
They presumed to go up to the mountain top. Characterized in a stubborn attitude, the people rejected the counsel of Moses and the word of the Lord to go to war against the Amalekites. Without God's help, he was obviously defeated.
45 Then the Amalekites came down and the Canaanites who lived in that hill, who smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.
