1 ¶ Voici la postérité d’Aaron et de Moïse, au temps où l’Éternel parla à Moïse, sur la montagne de Sinaï.
d’Aaron et de Moïse. Aaron est mentionné en premier puisque, dans ce ch., l’accent est mis sur lui et sur ses fils.
montagne du Sinaï. L’Éternel avait déjà informé Moïse du choix qu’il avait fait d’Aaron et de ses fils comme sacrificateurs en #Ex 28:1-29:46 alors qu’il se trouvait au milieu de la nuée sur le mont Sinaï (#Ex 24: 18).
2 Voici les noms des fils d’Aaron : Nadab, le premier-né, Abihu, Eléazar et Ithamar.
3 Ce sont là les noms des fils d’Aaron, qui reçurent l’onction comme sacrificateurs, et qui furent consacrés pour l’exercice du sacerdoce.
l’onction comme sacrificateurs. De toute la tribu de Lévi, seuls les fils d’Aaron étaient sacrificateurs. Eux seuls pouvaient offrir les sacrifices; le reste des Lévites les assistait dans le service du tabernacle (cf. vv. #No 3:7-9).
consacrés. La consécration d’Aaron et de ses fils au sacerdoce est rapportée en #Lé 8:1-9:24.
4 Nadab et Abihu moururent devant l’Éternel, lorsqu’ils apportèrent devant l’Éternel du feu étranger, dans le désert de Sinaï ; ils n’avaient point de fils. Eléazar et Ithamar exercèrent le sacerdoce, en présence d’Aaron, leur père.
Eléazar et Ithamar. Les futurs sacrificateurs d’Israël, sous l’alliance mosaïque, seraient tous descendants de ces deux fils d’Aaron avec, plus tard, une bénédiction particulière pour Eléazar et ses descendants (cf. #No 25:10-13).
5 L’Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit:
6 Fais approcher la tribu de Lévi, et tu la placeras devant le sacrificateur Aaron, pour qu’elle soit à son service.
la tribu de Lévi. La tâche spécifique des Lévites était de servir Aaron, ses fils et tout Israël en s’occupant du tabernacle selon les modalités définies aux vv. #No 3:25-26, #No 3:31, #No 3:36-37 ; #No 4:4-33.
7 Ils auront le soin de ce qui est remis à sa garde et à la garde de toute l’assemblée, devant la tente d’assignation : ils feront le service du tabernacle.
8 Ils auront le soin de tous les ustensiles de la tente d’assignation, et de ce qui est remis à la garde des enfants d’Israël : ils feront le service du tabernacle.
9 Tu donneras les Lévites à Aaron et à ses fils ; ils lui seront entièrement donnés, de la part des enfants d’Israël.
10 Tu établiras Aaron et ses fils pour qu’ils observent les fonctions de leur sacerdoce ; et l’étranger qui approchera sera puni de mort.
l’étranger. Les laïques ou les non-Israélites (cf. #No 1:51) étaient condamnés à mourir s’ils participaient aux activités sacerdotales (cf. v. #No 3:38 ; #No 16: 40).
11 L’Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit:
12 Voici, j’ai pris les Lévites du milieu des enfants d’Israël, à la place de tous les premiers-nés, des premiers-nés des enfants d’Israël ; et les Lévites m’appartiendront.
premiers-nés. Lors de l’exode, l’Éternel réclama pour lui-même tout mâle premier-né de l’homme (cf. #Ex 13:1-2). L’aîné jouait alors le rôle de sacrificateur pour la famille. Lorsque le sacerdoce fut officiellement instauré, Dieu conféra les devoirs sacerdotaux aux Lévites, en partie peut-être en raison de leur zèle lors de l’incident du veau d’or (cf. #Ex 32:29). Ils remplacèrent ainsi les premiers-nés.
13 Car tout premier-né m’appartient ; le jour où j’ai frappé tous les premiers-nés dans le pays d’Égypte, je me suis consacré tous les premiers-nés en Israël, tant des hommes que des animaux : ils m’appartiendront. Je suis l’Éternel.
14 ¶ L’Éternel parla à Moïse, dans le désert de Sinaï, et dit:
15 Fais le dénombrement des enfants de Lévi, selon les maisons de leurs pères, selon leurs familles ; tu feras le dénombrement de tous les mâles, depuis l’âge d’un mois et au-dessus.
Fais le dénombrement. Moïse recensa chaque Lévite mâle âgé d’un mois et plus. Lui-même, Aaron et leurs fils en faisaient partie, puisqu’ils étaient issus d’Amram (v. #No 3:19 ; cf. #Ex 6:20).
16 Moïse en fit le dénombrement sur l’ordre de l’Éternel, en se conformant à l’ordre qui lui fut donné.
17 Ce sont ici les fils de Lévi, d’après leurs noms: Guerschon, Kehath et Merari. —
18 Voici les noms des fils de Guerschon, selon leurs familles : Libni et Schimeï.
19 Voici les fils de Kehath, selon leurs familles: Amram, Jitsehar, Hébron et Uziel ;

3:21-26
Guerschon. Les Guerschonites comptaient 7500 hommes et étaient responsables des couvertures du tabernacle, à l’ouest duquel ils campaient.
22 Ceux dont on fit le dénombrement, en comptant tous les mâles depuis l’âge d’un mois et au-dessus, furent sept mille cinq cents.
23 Les familles des Guerschonites campaient derrière le tabernacle à l’occident.
24 Le chef de la maison paternelle des Guerschonites était Eliasaph, fils de Laël.
25 Pour ce qui concerne la tente d’assignation, on remit aux soins des fils de Guerschon le tabernacle et la tente, la couverture, le rideau qui est à l’entrée de la tente d’assignation ;
26 les toiles du parvis et le rideau de l’entrée du parvis, tout autour du tabernacle et de l’autel, et tous les cordages pour le service du tabernacle.
27 De Kehath descendent la famille des Amramites, la famille des Jitseharites, la famille des Hébronites et la famille des Uziélites, formant les familles des Kehathites.
3:27-32
Kehath. Les Kehathites comptaient plus probablement 8300 hommes, chiffre tiré de la LXX et qui correspond à l’ajout d’une lettre en hébreu Cette lettre dut disparaître très tôt dans le travail de copie des textes. Ils étaient responsables des objets saints du tabernacle (y compris du transport de l’arche), au sud duquel ils campaient.
28 En comptant tous les mâles depuis l’âge d’un mois et au-dessus, il y en eut huit mille six cents, qui furent chargés des soins du sanctuaire.
29 Les familles des fils de Kehath campaient au côté méridional du tabernacle.
30 Le chef de la maison paternelle des familles des Kehathites était Elitsaphan, fils d’Uziel.
31 On remit à leurs soins l’arche, la table, le chandelier, les autels, les ustensiles du sanctuaire, avec lesquels on fait le service, le voile et tout ce qui en dépend.
32 Le chef des chefs des Lévites était Eléazar, fils du sacrificateur Aaron ; il avait la surveillance de ceux qui étaient chargés des soins du sanctuaire.
33 De Merari descendent la famille de Machli et la famille de Muschi, formant les familles des Merarites.
3:33-37
Merari. Les Merarites comptaient 6200 hommes et s’occupaient de la structure en bois du tabernacle, au nord duquel ils campaient.
34 Ceux dont on fit le dénombrement, en comptant tous les mâles depuis l’âge d’un mois et au-dessus, furent six mille deux cents.
35 Le chef de la maison paternelle des familles de Merari était Tsuriel, fils d’Abihaïl. Ils campaient du côté septentrional du tabernacle.
36 On remit à la garde et aux soins des fils de Merari les planches du tabernacle, ses barres, ses colonnes et leurs bases, tous ses ustensiles et tout ce qui en dépend ;
37 les colonnes du parvis tout autour, leurs bases, leurs pieux et leurs cordages.
38 Moïse, Aaron et ses fils campaient devant le tabernacle, à l’orient, devant la tente d’assignation, au levant ; ils avaient la garde et le soin du sanctuaire, remis à la garde des enfants d’Israël ; et l’étranger qui s’approchera sera puni de mort.
Moïse, Aaron. Moïse et Aaron et ses fils reçurent une place d’honneur à l’est du tabernacle; ils assumaient la direction générale des Lévites. Eléazar supervisait les Kehathites (v. #No 3:32) et Ithamar les Guerschonites et les Merarites (#No 4:28, #No 4:33).
39 Tous les Lévites dont Moïse et Aaron firent le dénombrement sur l’ordre de l’Éternel, selon leurs familles, tous les mâles depuis l’âge d’un mois et au-dessus, furent vingt-deux mille.
40 ¶ L’Éternel dit à Moïse : Fais le dénombrement de tous les premiers-nés mâles parmi les enfants d’Israël, depuis l’âge d’un mois et au-dessus, et compte les d’après leurs noms.
41 Tu prendras les Lévites pour moi, l’Éternel, à la place de tous les premiers-nés des enfants d’Israël, et le bétail des Lévites à la place de tous les premiers-nés du bétail des enfants d’Israël.
42 Moïse fit le dénombrement de tous les premiers-nés parmi les enfants d’Israël, selon l’ordre que l’Éternel lui avait donné.
43 Tous les premiers-nés mâles, dont on fit le dénombrement, en comptant les noms, depuis l’âge d’un mois et au-dessus, furent vingt-deux mille deux cent soixante-treize.
vingt-deux mille deux cent soixante-treize. C’est le nombre total des Guerschonites, Kehathites et Merarites mâles, un an après l’exode. Les Lévites prirent la place de 22 000 premiers-nés, et le reste (273) fut racheté au prix de 1365 sicles d’argent (entre 16 et 22 kg).
44 L’Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit:
45 Prends les Lévites à la place de tous les premiers-nés des enfants d’Israël, et le bétail des Lévites à la place de leur bétail ; et les Lévites m’appartiendront. Je suis l’Éternel.
46 Pour le rachat des deux cent soixante-treize qui dépassent le nombre des Lévites, parmi les premiers-nés des enfants d’Israël,
47 tu prendras cinq sicles par tête ; tu les prendras selon le sicle du sanctuaire, qui est de vingt guéras.
48 Tu donneras l’argent à Aaron et à ses fils, pour le rachat de ceux qui dépassent le nombre des Lévites.
49 Moïse prit l’argent pour le rachat de ceux qui dépassaient le nombre des rachetés par les Lévites ;
50 il prit l’argent des premiers-nés des enfants d’Israël : mille trois cent soixante-cinq sicles, selon le sicle du sanctuaire.
51 Et Moïse donna l’argent du rachat à Aaron et à ses fils, sur l’ordre de l’Éternel, en se conformant à l’ordre que l’Éternel avait donné à Moïse.

1 ¶ These are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day when the LORD spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai.
Aaron and Moses. Aaron is mentioned first because in this c., The focus is on him and his son.
Mount Sinai. The Lord had already told Moses the choice he had made Aaron and his son as priests in #Ex 28: 1-29: 46 while he was in the middle of the cloud on Mount Sinai (# Ex 24: 18).
2 The names of the son of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
3 These are the names of the son of Aaron, the anointed priests, who were consecrated to exercise the priesthood.
the anointed priests. The whole tribe of Levi, the son of Aaron alone were priests. Only they could offer sacrifices; the rest of the Levites assisted them in the tabernacle (cf. vv #No. 3: 7-9).
consecrated. The consecration of Aaron and his son to the priesthood is reported in Lev # 8: 1-9: 24.
4 Nadab and Abihu died before Jehovah, when they offered before the Lord strange fire, in the desert of Sinai; they had a son. Eleazar and Ithamar ministered the priesthood in the presence of Aaron their father.
Eleazar and Ithamar. Future priests of Israel, under the Mosaic covenant, would all be descendants of these son of Aaron and, later, a special blessing for Eleazar and his descendants (cf. #No 25: 10-13).
5 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
6 Bring the tribe of Levi and present them before Aaron the priest, for it to be at its service.
the tribe of Levi. The specific task of Levites was to serve Aaron, his son and all Israel in dealing with the tabernacle in the manner defined in vv. #no 3: 25-26, 3:31 #no, #no 3: 36-37; #no 4: 4-33.
7 And they shall keep what is put in his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the Tent of Meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.
8 And they shall keep all the utensils of the tent of meeting, and what is released into the custody of the children of Israel they will tabernacle.
9 You shall give the Levites to Aaron and his son; they are wholly given to him from the children of Israel.
10 You shall appoint Aaron and his son, and they shall wait on their priest; and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.
abroad. The secular or non-Israelites (cf. 1:51 #No) were condemned to die if they were involved in priestly activities (cf. v #No 3:38; #No. 16: 40).
11 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
12 Behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn of the firstborn children of Israel; and the Levites shall be mine.
firstborn. During the Exodus, the Lord claimed for itself every male firstborn of man (cf. #Ex 13: 1-2). The elder then played the role of a priest for the family. When the priesthood was officially established, God conferred the priestly duties to the Levites, in part perhaps because of their zeal in the incident of the golden calf (cf. #Ex 32:29). They thus replaced the firstborn.
13 For all the firstborn are mine; the day that I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I devoted myself every firstborn in Israel, both man and beast: they shall be mine. I am the Lord.
14 ¶ And the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying:
15 Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers, by their families; shalt thou number of all the males, from a month old and above.
Make enumeration. Moses, a census of each male Levites a month old or more. Himself Aaron and their son were part since they were from Amram (v #No 3:19;. #Ex Cf. 6:20).
16 And Moses numbered according to the commandment of the LORD, by complying with the order given to him.
17 These are the son of Levi by their names: Gershon, Kohath and Merari. -
18 The names of the son of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei.
19 Behold the son of Kohath by their families: Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel;
20 and the son of Merari by their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of Levi after the house of their fathers.
21 Of Gershon was the family of Libni and family Shimites families of the Gershonites.
3: 21-26
Gershon. The Gershonites counted 7,500 men and were responsible for coverage of the tabernacle to the west where they camped.
22 And those that were numbered, counting every male from a month old and over, were seven thousand five hundred.
23 The families of the Gershonites encamped behind the tabernacle westward.
24 The head of the paternal house of the Gershonites was Eliasaph son of Lael.
25 As for the tent of meeting, they delivered the care of the son of Gershon the tabernacle and the tent, the cover, the curtain at the entrance of the tent of meeting;
26 the hangings of the court, and the curtain for the door of the court all around the tabernacle and the altar, and all the ropes for the tabernacle.
27 And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, the family of the Izharites, the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites: these are the families of the Kohathites.
3: 27-32
Kohath. The Kohathites had more men probably 8300, a figure derived from the LXX and which corresponds to the addition of a letter in Hebrew This letter had to go early in the working copy text. They were responsible for the holy tabernacle of objects (including the transportation of the ark), in the south where they camped.
28 Counting all the males, from a month old and upward, there were eight thousand six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary.
29 The families of the son of Kohath encamped on the south side of the tabernacle.
30 The head of the paternal house of the families of the Kohathites was Elizaphan the son of Uzziel.
31 And they put in their care the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the vessels of the sanctuary with which they service, sailing and everything that depends on it.
32 The chief of the chief of the Levites was Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest; he had the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary.
33 Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites the families of Merari.
3: 33-37
Merari. The Merari counted 6200 men and took care of the wooden structure of the tabernacle, the north where they camped.
34 And those that were numbered, counting every male from one month and above, were six thousand two hundred.
35 The head of the paternal house of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail. They camped on the north side of the tabernacle.
36 was handed to the custody and care of the son of Merari boards of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars and their bases, all its furnishings and everything that depends on it;
37 columns of the court round about, and their bases, and their pins, and their cords.
38 Moses, Aaron and his son were camping before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting, on the east; their care and the care of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel; and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.
Moses, Aaron. Moses and Aaron and his son received a place of honor in the east of the tabernacle; they assumed the general direction of the Levites. Eleazar oversaw Kohathites (v. #No 3:32) and Ithamar the Gershonites and Merarites (#No 4:28, 4:33 #No).
39 All the Levites whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of the LORD by their families, every male from one month and above, were twenty and two mile.
40 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses, Number all the firstborn males of the children of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names.
41 You shall take the Levites for me, Yahweh, instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstborn cattle of the children of Israel.
42 Moses numbered all the firstborn among the children of Israel, according to the order which the Lord had given him.
43 All the firstborn males, which were numbered, counting the names, from a month old and above, were twenty-two thousand two hundred seventy-three.
twenty-two thousand two hundred seventy-three. This is the total number of the Gershonites, the Kohathites, and Merari male, one year after the exodus. The Levites took the place of 22 000 first-born, and the rest (273) was bought for the money 1365 shekels (between 16 and 22 kg).
44 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
45 Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be mine. I am the Lord.
46 For the redemption of the two hundred seventy-three that exceed the number of Levites, the firstborn among the children of Israel,
47 thou shalt take five shekels a head; you shall take them according to the sanctuary shekel, which is twenty gerahs.
48 And thou shalt give the money to Aaron and his son, to redeem those who exceed the number of Levites.
49 Moses took the money for the redemption of those who exceeded the number redeemed by the Levites;
50 he took the money from the firstborn of the children of Israel thousand three hundred sixty-five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary.
51 And Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his son, the commandment of the LORD, by complying with the order which the Lord had commanded Moses.
