1 ¶ L’Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit:
8:1-4 #Ex 25:31-40 livre les instructions pour la confection du chandelier d’or et #Ex 37:17-24 rapporte sa fabrication. Pour la dédicace du tabernacle, les sept lampes du chandelier furent allumées.
2 Parle à Aaron, et tu lui diras: Lorsque tu placeras les lampes sur le chandelier, les sept lampes devront éclairer en face.
3 Aaron fit ainsi ; il plaça les lampes sur le devant du chandelier, comme l’Éternel l’avait ordonné à Moïse.
4 Le chandelier était d’or battu ; jusqu’à son pied, jusqu’à ses fleurs, il était d’or battu ; Moïse avait fait le chandelier d’après le modèle que l’Éternel lui avait montré.
5 ¶ L’Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit:
8:5-26 Cette cérémonie consacrait les Lévites au service de l’Éternel. Elle était un élément de la description générale de la dédicace du tabernacle.
6 Prends les Lévites du milieu des enfants d’Israël, et purifie-les.
purifie. En contraste avec les sacrificateurs, qui furent consacrés (#Ex 29:1, #Ex 29:9), les Lévites furent purifiés. Selon le v. 7, cette purification fut accomplie d’abord par l’aspersion de l’eau, puis par le rasage du corps et enfin par le lavage des habits. Elle leur permettait de toucher les ustensiles saints du tabernacle. Des exigences similaires avaient été données pour la purification des lépreux en #Lé 14:8-9.
7 Voici comment tu les purifieras. Fais sur eux une aspersion d’eau expiatoire ; qu’ils fassent passer le rasoir sur tout leur corps, qu’ils lavent leurs vêtements, et qu’ils se purifient.
8 Ils prendront ensuite un jeune taureau, avec l’offrande ordinaire de fleur de farine pétrie à l’huile ; et tu prendras un autre jeune taureau pour le sacrifice d’expiation.
9 Tu feras approcher les Lévites devant la tente d’assignation, et tu convoqueras toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël.
toute l’assemblée. Puisque les Lévites remplaçaient les premiers-nés qui assumaient une fonction de sacrificateur au sein de leur famille (voir les vv. #No 8:16-18), toute l’assemblée s’identifia à eux en posant les mains sur eux.
10 Tu feras approcher les Lévites devant l’Éternel ; et les enfants d’Israël poseront leurs mains sur les Lévites.
11 Aaron fera tourner de côté et d’autre les Lévites devant l’Éternel, comme une offrande de la part des enfants d’Israël ; et ils seront consacrés au service de l’Éternel.
12 Les Lévites poseront leurs mains sur la tête des taureaux ; et tu offriras l’un en sacrifice d’expiation, et l’autre en holocauste, afin de faire l’expiation pour les Lévites.

19 J’ai donné les Lévites entièrement à Aaron et à ses fils, du milieu des enfants d’Israël, pour qu’ils fassent le service des enfants d’Israël dans la tente d’assignation, pour qu’ils fassent l’expiation pour les enfants d’Israël, et pour que les enfants d’Israël ne soient frappés d’aucune plaie, en s’approchant du sanctuaire.

21 Les Lévites se purifièrent, et lavèrent leurs vêtements ; Aaron les fit tourner de côté et d’autre comme une offrande devant l’Éternel, et il fit l’expiation pour eux, afin de les purifier.
22 Après cela, les Lévites vinrent faire leur service dans la tente d’assignation, en présence d’Aaron et de ses fils, selon ce que l’Éternel avait ordonné à Moïse touchant les Lévites ; ainsi fut-il fait à leur égard.

24 Voici ce qui concerne les Lévites. Depuis l’âge de vingt-cinq ans et au-dessus, tout Lévite entrera au service de la tente d’assignation pour y exercer une fonction.
l’âge de vingt-cinq ans. D’après ce v., les Lévites débutaient leur service à 25 ans, alors que 4:3 parle de 30 ans. Un rabbin a suggéré que ces 5 ans de différence correspondaient à leur phase d’apprentissage. Toutefois, les tâches sont différentes dans les 2 ch. #No 4 traite du transport du tabernacle, tandis qu’ici il s’agit du service effectué à l’intérieur. Un Lévite commençait à servir dans le tabernacle à 25 ans et à le porter à 30. Dans les deux cas, son service se terminait à 50 ans. David abaissa la limite à 20 ans (voir #1Ch 23: 24, #1Ch 23: 27 ; cf. #Esd 3:8).
25 Depuis l’âge de cinquante ans, il sortira de fonction, et ne servira plus.
26 Il aidera ses frères dans la tente d’assignation, pour garder ce qui est remis à leurs soins ; mais il ne fera plus de service. Tu agiras ainsi à l’égard des Lévites pour ce qui concerne leurs fonctions.

2 Speak to Aaron and say to him, When you light the lamps upon the candlestick, the seven lamps shall give light in front.
3 Aaron did so; he lighted the lamps on the front of the candlestick, as the LORD commanded Moses.
4 of the candlestick was of beaten gold; from its base to its flowers, it was of beaten gold; Moses made the lampstand according to the pattern which the Lord had shown him.
¶ 5 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
8: 5-26 The ceremony dedicated the Levites to serve the Lord. It was part of the general description of the dedication of the tabernacle.
6 Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them.
purifies. In contrast to the priests, who were consecrated (#Ex 29: 1, #Ex 29: 9), the Levites were purified. According to v. 7, this first purification was accomplished by spraying water, then by shaving the body and finally by washing the clothes. It allowed them to touch the holy utensils of the tabernacle. Similar requirements were given for purification of lepers in # Lev 14: 8-9.
7 And thus shalt thou cleanse. Make them an Sprinkle water; they let them shave all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and cleanse themselves.
8 Then let them take a young bull, with the offering, fine flour mixed with oil; and you shall take another young bull for a sin offering.
9 thou shalt bring the Levites before the tent of meeting, and thou shalt gather the whole assembly of the children of Israel.
the whole assembly. Since the Levites replaced the firstborn who assumed a priestly function within their families (see vv #No. 8: 16-18), the whole assembly is identified to them by posing hands on them.
10 And thou shalt bring the Levites before the LORD; and the children of Israel shall lay their hands upon the Levites.
11 Aaron shall side and the Levites before the LORD as a wave offering from the children of Israel; and will be devoted to the service of the Lord.
12 The Levites shall lay their hands upon the heads of the bulls; and thou shalt offer the one for a sin offering and the other a burnt offering, to make atonement for the Levites.
13 You shall set the Levites stand before Aaron and before his son, and thou shalt turn sideways and as an offering to the Lord.
14 Thou shalt separate the Levites from among the children of Israel; and the Levites shall be mine.
15 After that the Levites shall do the service of the tent of meeting. This is how you cleanse them, and thou shalt make them turn sideways and as an offering.
16 For they are wholly given unto me from among the children of Israel, have I taken them to me instead of the firstborn of all the firstborn among the children of Israel.
17 For all the firstborn children of Israel are mine, both of man and beast; the day that I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified them for myself.
18 And I have taken the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel.
19 I have given the Levites to Aaron and his son from among the children of Israel, to do the service of the children of Israel in the tent of meeting to make atonement for the children of Israel, and for the children of Israel are no plague, approaching the sanctuary.

21 The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes; Aaron offered them this way and that as an offering before the LORD and made atonement for them to cleanse them.
22 After that the Levites went in to do their service in the tent of meeting before Aaron and his son; as the LORD commanded Moses concerning the Levites, thus was it done for them.
23 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
24 This is it that the Levites. Since the age of twenty-five years old and upward they shall enter the service of the tent of meeting to hold office.
the age of twenty-five. . According to v, the Levites began their service at 25 years, while 4: 3 speaks of 30 years. A rabbi suggested that these 5 years difference corresponded to their learning phase. However, the tasks are different in the 2 ch. #no 4 deals with the transportation of the tabernacle, while here it is the service on the inside. A Levite started serving in the tabernacle and 25 and to raise it to 30. In both cases, his service ended at 50 years. David lowered the limit to 20 years (see # 1Ch 23: 24 # 1Ch 23: 27; cf. #Esd 3: 8).
25 Since the age of fifty years they shall cease to function, and no longer serve.
26 He will help his brothers in the tent of meeting, to keep what is given to their care; but it will no longer service. Thus shalt thou do to the Levites regarding their duties.
