1 ¶ Écoutez ceci, sacrificateurs ! Sois attentive, maison d’Israël ! Prête l’oreille, maison du roi ! Car c’est à vous que le jugement s’adresse, Parce que vous avez été un piège à Mitspa, Et un filet tendu sur le Thabor.
Osée s’adressa aux sacrificateurs, au peuple et à la famille royale avec trois impératifs réclamant leur attention. Les autorités religieuses et civiles avaient fait tomber le peuple dans un piège (cf. #Os 6:9 ; #Os 7:7).
Mitspa … Thabor. « Mitspa » se trouvait en Galaad, à l’est du Jourdain (#Jug 10:17 ; #Jug 11:29), et « Thabor » au sud-ouest de la mer de Galilée. C’étaient probablement des lieux réservés au culte des faux dieux.
2 Par leurs sacrifices, les infidèles s’enfoncent dans le crime, Mais j’aurai des châtiments pour eux tous.
3 Je connais Éphraïm, Et Israël ne m’est point caché ; Car maintenant, Éphraïm, tu t’es prostitué, Et Israël s’est souillé.
4 Leurs œuvres ne leur permettent pas de revenir à leur Dieu, Parce que l’esprit de prostitution est au milieu d’eux, Et parce qu’ils ne connaissent pas l’Éternel.
5 L’orgueil d’Israël témoigne contre lui ; Israël et Éphraïm tomberont par leur iniquité ; Avec eux aussi tombera Juda.
L’orgueil d’Israël témoigne contre lui. La fierté qu’Israël éprouvait vis-à-vis de son idolâtrie équivalait en fait à une accusation portée contre lui-même (cf. #Os 7:10).
6 Ils iront avec leurs brebis et leurs bœufs chercher l’Éternel, Mais ils ne le trouveront point : Il s’est retiré du milieu d’eux.
5:6-7 Les sacrifices religieux et les fêtes mensuelles que les Israélites continuaient à pratiquer ne pouvaient plus leur gagner la faveur divine, mais seulement le jugement. Dieu s’était « retiré du milieu d’eux ».
7 Ils ont été infidèles à l’Éternel, Car ils ont engendré des enfants illégitimes ; Maintenant un mois suffira pour les dévorer avec leurs biens.
8 ¶ Sonnez de la trompette à Guibea, Sonnez de la trompette à Rama ! Poussez des cris à Beth-Aven ! Derrière toi, Benjamin !
L’ennemi était déjà là, et les sentinelles d’Israël devaient donc donner l’alarme (cf. #No 10:9).
Guibea … Rama. Villes situées sur la frontière entre Juda et Israël.
Beth-Aven. C’est-à-dire Béthel, située au sud d’Israël (cf. #Os 4:15). Ces trois villes représentaient des lieux stratégiques pour la défense d’Israël.
Benjamin. C’est-à-dire le royaume du sud tout entier.
9 Éphraïm sera dévasté au jour du châtiment ; J’annonce aux tribus d’Israël une chose certaine.
10 Les chefs de Juda sont comme ceux qui déplacent les bornes ; Je répandrai sur eux ma colère comme un torrent.
déplacent les bornes. Marquées par des pierres, les frontières pouvaient être facilement déplacées, à la faveur de la nuit. Déplacer de telles bornes équivalait à voler du terrain au voisin (cf. #De 19: 14 ; #De 27:17 ; #Pr 22: 28 ; #Pr 23: 10). Pire encore, ces chefs déplaçaient les limites spirituelles établies par Dieu (cf. v. #Os 5:11).
11 Éphraïm est opprimé, brisé par le jugement, Car il a suivi les préceptes qui lui plaisaient.
12 Je serai comme une teigne pour Éphraïm, Comme une carie pour la maison de Juda.
teigne … carie. Dieu provoquerait la destruction d’Israël.
13 Éphraïm voit son mal, et Juda ses plaies ; Éphraïm se rend en Assyrie, et s’adresse au roi Jareb ; Mais ce roi ne pourra ni vous guérir, Ni porter remède à vos plaies.
roi Jareb. « Jareb », littéralement « disputeur », était un titre désignant le roi d’Assyrie. Israël (cf. #2R 15:19-20) puis Juda (cf. #2R 16:5-9) se tournèrent tous deux vers lui pour solliciter son aide.
14 Je serai comme un lion pour Éphraïm, Comme un lionceau pour la maison de Juda ; Moi, moi, je déchirerai, puis je m’en irai, J’emporterai, et nul n’enlèvera ma proie.
5:14-15 Aucune assistance étrangère ne servirait à quoi que ce soit, puisque l’Éternel prévoyait d’infliger son jugement par l’intermédiaire des Assyriens. Il allait se retirer jusqu’à ce que les Israélites « s’avouent coupables » et « cherchent ma face » (cf. #Os 3:5).
15 Je m’en irai, je reviendrai dans ma demeure, Jusqu’à ce qu’ils s’avouent coupables et cherchent ma face. Quand ils seront dans la détresse, ils auront recours à moi.

1 ¶ Hear this, O priests; Hearken, O house of Israel Give ear, O house of the king! For this is that the judgment is addressed, because you have been a snare on Mizpah, and a net spread on Tabor.
Hosea spoke to the priests, the people and the royal family with three imperatives demanding their attention. Religious and civil authorities had dropped the people into a trap (see #Os 6: 9; #Os 7: 7).
Mizpah ... Tabor. "Mizpah" was in Gilead, east of the Jordan (10:17 #Jug; #Jug 11:29), and "Tabor" in the southwest of the Sea of Galilee. They were probably places of worship of false gods.
2 For their sacrifices, infidels sink in crime, though I have been punishment for them all.
3 I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from me; For now, Ephraim, you've prostitute, and Israel is defiled.
4 Their works will not allow them to return to their God, for the spirit of prostitution is in their midst, And because they do not know the Lord.
5 The pride of Israel testifies against him; Israel and Ephraim fall in their iniquity; Judah also shall fall with them.
The pride of Israel testifies against him. The pride felt Israel vis-à-vis his idolatry was equivalent to a charge against itself (cf. #Os 7:10).
6 They shall go with their flocks and herds to seek the Lord, but they shall not find him; he has withdrawn from them.
5: 6-7 The religious sacrifices and monthly festivals that the Israelites continued to practice their addition could earn God's favor, but only the judgment. God had "withdrawn from them."
7 They have been unfaithful to the Lord, for they have begotten strange children: Now the new moon will devour them with their portions.
8 ¶ Blow the trumpet in Gibeah, the trumpet in Ramah! Cry aloud at Beth Aven! Behind you, Benjamin!
The enemy was already there, and the watchmen of Israel therefore had to set an alarm (see #No 10: 9).
Gibeah ... Ramah. Towns on the border between Judah and Israel.
Aven. That is to say, Bethel, south of Israel (cf. #Os 4:15). These three cities represented at strategic points for the defense of Israel.
Benjamin. That is to say, the southern kingdom entirely.
9 Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of punishment; I announced to the tribes of Israel a certain thing.
10 The princes of Judah were like them that remove the bound I will pour out my wrath upon them like water.
moving the terminals. Marked by stones, borders could be easily moved, the cover of night. Move these terminals amounted to steal the land to the neighbor (cf. # of 19: 14; # of 27:17; #Pr 22: 28; #Pr 23: 10). Worse, these leaders moved spiritual boundaries established by God (cf. v. #Os 5:11).
11 Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he followed the precepts he liked.
12 I will be like a moth to Ephraim, like a rot to the house of Judah.
... ringworm decay. God would cause the destruction of Israel.
13 Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, Ephraim went to Assyria, and sent to king Jareb; But this king will neither heal you, nor cure you of your wound wear.
Great king. "Jareb," literally "disputatious" was a title designating the king of Assyria. Israel (cf. 2R # 15: 19-20) and Judah (cf. 2R # 16: 5-9) both turned to him to ask his help.
14 I will be like a lion to Ephraim, like a young lion to the house of Judah; I, I, I will tear and let me go, I take away, and none shall rescue him.
5: 14-15 No foreign assistance would serve anything, because the Lord was planning to impose his judgment through the Assyrians. He was going to retire until the Israelites "acknowledge their guilt" and "seek my face" (cf. #Os 3: 5).
15 I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offense, and seek my face. When they are in distress, they will seek me early.
