1 ¶ Embouche la trompette ! L’ennemi fond comme un aigle sur la maison de l’Éternel, Parce qu’ils ont violé mon alliance, Et transgressé ma loi.
comme un aigle. L’Assyrie était prête à fondre sur Israël pour le dévorer (cf. #De 28:49).
violé mon alliance. Allusion à l’alliance mosaïque (cf. #Os 8:1 ; #Ex 19:5-6).
2 Ils crieront vers moi : Mon Dieu, nous te connaissons, nous Israël !
nous te connaissons. Indice du syncrétisme des Israélites: tout en pratiquant l’idolâtrie, ils suppliaient Dieu de les secourir.
3 Israël a rejeté le bien ; L’ennemi le poursuivra.
4 Ils ont établi des rois sans mon ordre, Et des chefs à mon insu ; Ils ont fait des idoles avec leur argent et leur or ; C’est pourquoi ils seront anéantis.
5 L’Éternel a rejeté ton veau, Samarie ! Ma colère s’est enflammée contre eux. Jusques à quand refuseront-ils de se purifier ?
L’Éternel a rejeté ton veau. Le culte du « veau » d’or était la religion nationale du royaume du nord (cf. #1R 12:25-33 ; #Ex 32).
6 Il vient d’Israël, un ouvrier l’a fabriqué, Et ce n’est pas un Dieu ; C’est pourquoi le veau de Samarie sera mis en pièces.
7 Puisqu’ils ont semé du vent, ils moissonneront la tempête ; Ils n’auront pas un épi de blé ; Ce qui poussera ne donnera point de farine, Et s’il y en avait, des étrangers la dévoreraient.
moissonneront la tempête. Indication de l’inutilité grandissante de toute la fausse religion des Israélites.
8 ¶ Israël est anéanti ! Ils sont maintenant parmi les nations Comme un vase qui n’a pas de prix.
9 Car ils sont allés en Assyrie, Comme un âne sauvage qui se tient à l’écart ; Éphraïm a fait des présents pour avoir des amis.
ils sont allés en Assyrie. Comme l’indique le contexte, il ne s’agit pas, ici, d’une allusion à l’exil, mais à l’alliance conclue avec l’Assyrie. Pareil à « un âne sauvage », Israël avait persisté à demander de l’aide aux nations étrangères, au lieu de s’appuyer sur Dieu.
10 Quand même ils font des présents parmi les nations, Je vais maintenant les rassembler, Et bientôt ils souffriront sous le fardeau du roi des princes.
11 Éphraïm a multiplié les autels pour pécher, Et ces autels l’ont fait tomber dans le péché.
12 Que j’écrive pour lui toutes les ordonnances de ma loi, Elles sont regardées comme quelque chose d’étranger.
Israël avait été suffisamment averti; il était donc inexcusable (cf. v. #Os 8:1 ; #Os 6:7).
13 Ils immolent des victimes qu’ils m’offrent, Et ils en mangent la chair : L’Éternel n’y prend point de plaisir. Maintenant l’Éternel se souvient de leur iniquité, Et il punira leurs péchés : Ils retourneront en Égypte.

Évoquant le précédent asservissement d’Israël, Osée annonça à ses compatriotes que l’Assyrie était en passe de devenir leur nouvelle « Égypte » (cf. #Os 9:3 ; #Os 11:5 ; #De 28:68). Quelques fugitifs juifs se rendraient effectivement en Égypte (cf. #2R 25:26). Esaïe utilisa « Sodome » d’une façon similaire (#Esa 1:9-10).
14 Israël a oublié celui qui l’a fait, Et a bâti des palais, Et Juda a multiplié les villes fortes ; Mais j’enverrai le feu dans leurs villes, Et il en dévorera les palais.
Juda a multiplié les villes fortes. Moins idolâtre qu’Israël, Juda manquait cependant, lui aussi, de confiance en Dieu: au lieu de se tourner vers l’Éternel, il multipliait les recours aux moyens défensifs humains (cf. #Esa 22: 8 ; #Jér 5:17).

1 ¶ fattening trumpet! He shall come as an eagle against the house of the Lord, because they have transgressed my covenant, and transgressed my law.
like an eagle. Assyria was ready to pounce on Israel to devour (cf. # of 28:49).
broken my covenant. Referring to the Mosaic Covenant (cf. #Os 8: 1; #Ex 19: 5-6).

we know you. Index of syncretism of the Israelites while practicing idolatry, they begged God to rescue them.

4 They set up kings without my orders princes, and without my knowledge; They made idols with their silver and gold; That is why they will be destroyed.
5 The LORD has rejected your calf, O Samaria! My anger is kindled against them. How long will they purify themselves?
The Lord has rejected your calf. The cult of "veal" Gold was the national religion of the northern kingdom (see # 1R 12: 25-33; #Ex 32).
6 For from Israel, the workman made it, and it is not God; This is the calf of Samaria will be in pieces.
7 For they sow the wind and reap the whirlwind; They will not have an ear of corn; What will not push the point of meal, and if there were, strangers will swallow it.
reap the whirlwind. Indication of the increasing uselessness of all the false religion of the Israelites.
8 ¶ Israel is swallowed They are now among the nations as a vessel is priceless.
9 For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild ass who stands apart; Ephraim has hired to have friends.
they go to Assyria. As the context, it is not a question, here, an allusion to the exile, but the alliance with Assyria. Like "a wild ass", Israel had persisted in asking for help to foreign nations, instead of relying on God.
10 Though they have hired among the nations, now will I gather them, and soon they will suffer under the burden of the king of princes.
11 Ephraim has multiplied altars to sin, altars did fall into sin.
12 I have written to him all of my law, but they were counted as a strange thing.
Israel had been sufficiently warned; so it was inexcusable (see verse #Os 8: 1; #Os. 6: 7).
13 They immolated victims they offer me, and eat the flesh, Jehovah takes no pleasure there. Now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt.
they return to Egypt. Citing Israel's previous enslavement, Hosea told his compatriots that Assyria was becoming their new 'Egypt' (cf. #Os 9: 3; #Os 11: 5; # of 28:68). Some Jewish fugitives actually render in Egypt (see # 2R 25:26). Isaiah used "Sodom" in a similar way (#Esa 1: 9-10).
14 Israel has forgotten his did, and built palaces; and Judah has multiplied fortified cities; But I will send fire on their cities, and it shall devour the palaces.
Judah has multiplied fortified cities. idolatrous unless Israel, Judah was missing, however, too, trust in God instead of turning to the Lord, he multiplied the use of human defensive means (see #Esa 22: 8; Jer 5:17 # ).
