1 ¶ Heureux ceux qui sont intègres dans leur voie, Qui marchent selon la loi de l’Éternel !
119:1-176
C’est le plus long des psaumes et des ch. de la Bible, le « mont Everest » du psautier. Il rejoint les #Ps 1 et 19 dans l’exaltation de la Parole de Dieu. On n’a aucune certitude quant à l’identité de son auteur, mais les noms de David, Daniel ou Esdras ont été avancés. Le psalmiste écrivit apparemment pendant un temps de détresse particulière (cf. vv. #Ps 119:23, #Ps 119:42, #Ps 119:51, #Ps 119:61, #Ps 119:67, #Ps 119:71, #Ps 119:78, #Ps 119:86-87, #Ps 119:95, #Ps 119:110, #Ps 119:121, #Ps 119:134, #Ps 119:139, #Ps 119:143, #Ps 119:146, #Ps 119:153-154, #Ps 119:157, #Ps 119:161, #Ps 119:169). C’est un psaume alphabétique (cf. #Ps 9:1-10:2 ; #Ps 25 ; #Ps 34 ; #Ps 37 ; #Ps 111:1-112:2 ; #Ps 145) composé de 22 sections, chacune contenant 8 versets. Chacun des 8 versets de la première partie commence avec la première lettre de l’alphabet hébreu, et le psaume continue sur le même mode jusqu’à ce que les 22 lettres aient été utilisées dans l’ordre. Huit termes sont régulièrement employés pour désigner les Écritures:
1° loi;
2° lois;
3° préceptes;
4° statuts;
5° commandements;
6° jugements;
7° parole;
8° ordonnances.
Dès avant l’aurore et après le crépuscule, la vie du psalmiste est décrite comme consacrée à la Parole de Dieu:
1° avant le lever du soleil (v. #Ps 119:147);
2° tout le jour (v. #Ps 119:97);
3° sept fois par jour (v. #Ps 119:164);
4° tous les soirs (vv. #Ps 119:55, #Ps 119:148);
5° à minuit (v. #Ps 119:62).
Le psaume n’a pas de structure particulière, si ce n’est sa forme alphabétique. Certains thèmes reviennent et seront développés dans les notes.

Heureux. Début similaire à celui de 1:1-3. Le psalmiste déclare par ailleurs que les Écritures sont plus précieuses que l’argent (vv. #Ps 119:14, #Ps 119:72, #Ps 119:127, #Ps 119:162) et apportent plus de douceur que le miel (v. #Ps 119:103 ; cf. #Pr 13: 13 ; #Pr 16: 20 ; #Pr 19: 16).

Le « cœur » désignait à la fois l’intellect, la volonté et les émotions (cf. vv. #Ps 119:7, #Ps 119:10-11, #Ps 119:32, #Ps 119:34, #Ps 119:36, #Ps 119:58, #Ps 119:69-70, #Ps 119:80, #Ps 119:111-112, #Ps 119:145, #Ps 119:161). Un engagement complet, de tout cœur, est mentionné 6 fois (vv. #Ps 119:2, #Ps 119:10, #Ps 119:34, #Ps 119:58, #Ps 119:69, #Ps 119:145).

Puissent. Il est parfois difficile de distinguer où le témoignage du psalmiste se termine et où commence la prière (cf. vv. #Ps 119:29, #Ps 119:36, #Ps 119:58, #Ps 119:133).

L’intériorisation de la Parole est la meilleure arme dont le croyant dispose pour se protéger du péché, toujours prêt à gagner du terrain.

un étranger. En tant que citoyen du royaume de Dieu, le psalmiste se considérait comme un simple voyageur, seulement de passage dans le royaume des hommes.

1 ¶ Blessed are they that are upright in their ways, who walk according to the law of the LORD.
119: 1-176
It is the longest of the psalms and ch. Of the Bible, the "Mount Everest" of the psalter. He joined #Ps 1 and 19 in the exaltation of the Word of God. There is no certainty as to the identity of its author, but the names of David, Daniel or Ezra were advanced. The Psalmist apparently wrote during a time of special distress (see vv. 119: 23, #Ps 119: 42, #Ps 119: 51, #Ps 119: 61, #Ps 119: 67, #Ps 119: 71 , Ps 119: 134, #Ps 119: 139, #Ps 119: 143 , #Ps 119: 146, #Ps 119: 153-154, #Ps 119: 157, #Ps 119: 161, #Ps 119: 169). This is an alphabetic psalm (see #Ps 9: 1-10: 2; #Ps 25; #Ps 34; #Ps 37; #Ps 111: 1-112: 2; #Ps 145) consisting of 22 sections, Each containing 8 verses. Each of the 8 verses of the first part begins with the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and the psalm continues in the same mode until the 22 letters have been used in order. Eight terms are used regularly to refer to the Scriptures:
1st law;
2 ° laws;
3 ° precepts;
4 ° statutes;
5 ° Commandments;

8th ordinances.
Before the dawn and after twilight, the life of the psalmist is described as consecrated to the Word of God:

4 ° every night (vv. Ps 119: 55, # Ps 119: 148);

The Psalm has no particular structure, except its alphabetical form. Some themes come back and will be developed in the notes.
119: 1-2
Happy. Start similar to 1: 1-3. The psalmist further states that the scriptures are more precious than money (vv. 119: 14, 119: 72, # 119: 127, #Ps 119: 162) and bring more sweetness than honey (Vs. #Ps 119: 103, cf. #Pr 13:13; #Pr 16:20; #Pr 19:16).
Walk. An allusion to the usual way of life.
2 Blessed are those who keep his precepts, who seek him with all their heart,
With all their hearts. The "heart" denoted both the intellect, the will and the emotions (cf. vp. 119: 7, #Ps 119: 10-11, #Ps 119: 32, #Ps 119: 34, #Ps 119: 36, #Ps 119: 58, #Ps 119: 69-70, #Ps 119: 80, #Ps 119: 111-112, #Ps 119: 145, #Ps 119: 161). A full, heartfelt commitment is mentioned 6 times (vv. #Ps 119: 2, #Ps 119: 10, #Ps 119: 34, #Ps 119: 58, #Ps 119: 69, #Ps 119: 145 ).

Power. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish where the testimony of the psalmist ends and where the prayer begins (cf. vp. 119: 29, #Ps 119: 36, #Ps 119: 58, #Ps 119: 133).

7 ¶ I will praise thee in the uprightness of my heart, hearing the laws of thy righteousness.

The interiorization of the Word is the best weapon the believer has to protect himself from sin, always ready to gain ground.
10 ¶ I seek thee with all my heart: Do not let me depart from thy commandments.

12 ¶ Blessed art thou, O Jehovah! Teach me your statutes!
Teach me. The psalmist student asks the divine author to become his teacher (see vv. 119: 26, #Ps 119: 33, #Ps 119: 64, #Ps 119: 66, #Ps 119: 68, Ps 119: 108, #Ps 119: 124, #Ps 119: 135), and the result is that he does not turn away from the Word (v. # Ps 119: 102).

Open my eyes. It is perhaps the supreme prayer in the mouth of the one studying the Scriptures, since it recognizes the incapacity of the pupil and the complete sufficiency of the Creator (cf. vv # 119: 98-99, Ps 119: 105, #Ps 119: 130).
19 ¶ I am a stranger on the earth: hide not thy commandments from me.
a stranger. As a citizen of the kingdom of God, the psalmist considered himself a mere traveler, only passing through the kingdom of men.
20 ¶ My soul is broken by desire, which always carries it to thy laws.
Broken by desire. This expresses the psalmist's deep passion for the Word (cf. vp. 119: 40, #Ps 119: 131).
21 ¶ Thou shalt threaten the proud, these cursed ones, who go astray from thy commandments.
Proud, these cursed. The psalmist identified himself with the blame God addressed to those who disobeyed his Word (cf. Ps 119: 53, Ps 119: 104, Ps 119: 113, Ps 119: 115, Ps 119: 118, #Ps 119: 126).
22 ¶ Release me from reproach and contempt. For I obey your precepts.
23 ¶ In vain are princes sat down and speak against me. Your servant is meditating on your statutes.
24 ¶ Thy precepts are my delight, these are my counselors.
My advisers. The most effective helping relationship is the application of the Word of God to the heart of the believer, and this is the work of the Holy Spirit (cf. vs. 119: 98-100).
25 ¶ My soul is tied to the dust: Give me life according to thy word.
Give me life. The psalmist ardently desired an awakening, conscious that God and his Word were alone sufficient (cf. vp. 119: 37, #Ps 119: 40, #Ps 119: 50, #Ps 119: 88, #Ps 119: 93 , #Ps 119: 107, #Ps 119: 149, #Ps 119: 154, #Ps 119: 156, #Ps 119: 159).
26 ¶ I tell thee my ways, and thou hearest me: Teach me thy statutes.
27 Make me understand the way of your ordinances, and I will meditate on thy wonders.
Let me understand. Later, Philip would ask the Ethiopian eunuch who read #Esa 53 if he understood what he was reading (#Ac 8:30). The psalmist knew that God is the best source of instruction (see vv. Ps 119: 34, Ps 119: 73, Ps 119: 100, Ps 119: 125, Ps 119: 144, Ps 119 : 169).

The way of lies ... the way of truth. The psalmist wanted to imitate God and his truth, as opposed to the false ways of Satan (cf. Ps 119: 163).

32 I walk in the way of thy commandments, for thou hast enlarged my heart.
I run in the path. Reflects the enthusiasm of the psalmist to respond to the Word of God.

You are good. The psalmist frequently appeals to the character of God:

Insensible as fat. Describes the proud of v. 69: their heart was hard, insensible to the point of preventing the Word from entering it.

144 Thy precepts are eternally righteous: Give me understanding, that I may live.
