1 ¶ Cantique des degrés. Je lève mes yeux vers les montagnes … D’où me viendra le secours ?
121:1-8
L’identité de l’auteur et les circonstances de la rédaction sont inconnues. Ce chant fait résonner en quatre étapes une note d’assurance: Dieu représente l’aide et la protection suffisante pour préserver Israël et les croyants (pris individuellement) du danger.
I. Dieu secourt (121:1-2)

montagnes. Très probablement celles que le pèlerin voyait au loin, dans sa marche vers Jérusalem, lorsqu’il regardait en direction du temple.
2 Le secours me vient de l’Éternel, Qui a fait les cieux et la terre.
Le secours. Le psalmiste ne cherchait pas du secours dans la création, mais auprès de son créateur.
3 Il ne permettra point que ton pied chancelle ; Celui qui te garde ne sommeillera point.
121:3-4
ni ne dort. Cf. l’apparition du sommeil en #Ps 44:24. Le Dieu vivant est totalement différent des dieux païens / idoles mortes (cf. #1R 18: 27).
chancelle. Cf. #Ps 37:23-24.
4 Voici, il ne sommeille ni ne dort, Celui qui garde Israël.
5 L’Éternel est celui qui te garde, L’Éternel est ton ombre à ta main droite.
ta main droite. Représentait le lieu des besoins humains.
6 Pendant le jour le soleil ne te frappera point, Ni la lune pendant la nuit.
Pendant le jour … pendant la nuit. Il s’agit d’une protection 24 heures sur 24.
7 L’Éternel te gardera de tout mal, Il gardera ton âme ;
121:7-8
Alors que ces vv. semblent, à première vue, n’avoir qu’un sens temporel, plusieurs éléments indiquent qu’il est aussi question de l’au-delà, de la vie éternelle, par exemple, « tout mal » (v. #Ps 121:7) et « à jamais » (v. #Ps 121:8).
8 L’Éternel gardera ton départ et ton arrivée, Dès maintenant et à jamais.

1 ¶ Song of the Degrees. I raise my eyes towards the mountains ... Where will help come from?
121: 1-8
The identity of the author and the circumstances of the drafting are unknown. This song echoes in four steps an assurance note: God represents the help and protection sufficient to preserve Israel and the believers (individually) from the danger.
I. God succours (121: 1-2)
II. God keeps (121: 3-4)
III. God protects (121: 5-6)
IV. God preserves (121: 7-8)
Mountains. Very probably those which the pilgrim saw in the distance, in his march towards Jerusalem, when he looked towards the temple.
2 The help comes to me from the LORD, who made the heavens and the earth.
Help. The psalmist did not seek help in creation but with his creator.
3 He will not allow your foot to falter; He that keeps thee shall not slumber.
121: 3-4
Nor sleeps. Cf. the appearance of sleep in #Ps 44:24. The living God is totally different from the pagan gods / dead idols (cf. # 1R 18:27).
Staggered. See #Ps 37: 23-24.
4 Behold, neither sleeps nor sleeps, he that keepeth Israel.
5 The LORD is he that keepeth thee; the LORD is thy shadow on thy right hand.
Your right hand. Represents the place of human needs.
6 In the day the sun shall not strike you, nor the moon in the night.
During the day ... during the night. This is a 24-hour protection.
7 The LORD will keep you from all evil, He will keep your soul;
121: 7-8
While these vv. Seem at first sight to have only a temporal meaning, several elements indicate that there is also talk of the hereafter, eternal life, for example, "all evil" (see #Ps 121: 7) and "forever" (see #Ps 121: 8).
8 The LORD will keep your departure and your coming, from now on and forever.
