129:1-8
L’identité de l’auteur et les circonstances de la rédaction ne sont pas précisées, cependant le v. 4 renvoie à une libération, probablement au retour de l’exil babylonien.

Prière d’imprécation qui souhaite l’accomplissement de trois destins pour les ennemis:
1° souffrir de la honte et de la défaite (v. #Ps 129:5),
2° être peu nombreux et avoir une vie brève (vv. #Ps 129:6-7),
3° être privés des bénédictions de Dieu (v. #Ps 129:8).

l’herbe des toits. Les méchants ressemblent à une herbe dont les racines sont si peu profondes qu’elle meurt avec les premières chaleurs.
7 Le moissonneur n’en remplit point sa main, Celui qui lie les gerbes n’en charge point son bras,
8 Et les passants ne disent point : Que la bénédiction de l’Éternel soit sur vous ! Nous vous bénissons au nom de l’Éternel !

129: 1-8
The identity of the author and the circumstances of the drafting are not specified, however, v. 4 refers to a liberation, probably on the return of the Babylonian exile.

Quite oppressed. Between slavery in Egypt (about 1875-1445 BC) and exile in Babylon (around 605-538 BC), Israel had not tasted much rest from his enemies.
2 They have oppressed me from my youth, but they have not defeated me.
defeated. As the Lord had promised Abraham (cf. Ge 12: 1-3).
3 Plowmen have plowed my back, and have traced long furrows there.
Plowed my back. Agricultural image used to describe the deep but not mortal wounds inflicted by its enemies on Israel.
4 The LORD is righteous: He has cut the ropes of the wicked.
Cut the strings. Strings bind the ox to the plow; The image evokes the term put by God to the persecution (see #Ps 121; #Ps 124).
5 ¶ Let them be confounded, and let them retreat, and all that hate Zion.
129: 5-8
Prayer of imprecation which wishes the fulfillment of three destinies for the enemies:
1) to suffer shame and defeat (see #Ps 129: 5),
(2) be few in number and have a brief life (vv. Ps 129: 6-7),
(3) to be deprived of the blessings of God (see #Ps 129: 8).
6 Let them be as the grass of the roofs, Who dries before they pluck it up!
The grass of the roofs. The wicked resemble a grass whose roots are so shallow that it dies with the first heat.
7 The reaper does not fill his hand, but he that binds the sheaves does not load his arm,
8 And the passers-by do not say, Let the blessing of the LORD be upon you. We bless you in the name of the Lord!
