1 ¶ Psaume de David. Éternel, écoute ma prière, prête l’oreille à mes supplications ! Exauce-moi dans ta fidélité, dans ta justice !

On ignore quel est l’arrière-plan de ce psaume de David, qui est le dernier psaume de pénitence (cf. #Ps 6 ; #Ps 32 ; #Ps 38 ; #Ps 51 ; #Ps 102 ; #Ps 130).

aucun vivant n’est juste. David reconnaissait sa propre injustice; il était conscient que, s’il devait être délivré au nom de la justice (cf. v. #Ps 143:11), ce serait grâce à la justice de Dieu, et non grâce à la sienne propre.

7 ¶ Hâte-toi de m’exaucer, ô Éternel ! Mon esprit se consume. Ne me cache pas ta face ! Je serais semblable à ceux qui descendent dans la fosse.

10 Enseigne-moi à faire ta volonté ! Car tu es mon Dieu. Que ton bon esprit me conduise sur la voie droite !

Fidelity ... justice. David appealed fervently to the attributes of God.
2 Do not enter into judgment with your servant! For no living is right before thee.
No living being is just. David acknowledged his own injustice; He was aware that if it were to be delivered in the name of righteousness (cf. Ps 143: 11), it would be through the righteousness of God, not through his own righteousness.
3 The enemy pursue my soul, and treads my life to the ground; He makes me dwell in the darkness, like those who have long since died.
4 My spirit is broken down within me, My heart is troubled in my bosom.
5 I remember the days of old, I meditate on all your works, I reflect on the work of your hands.
6 I stretch out my hands toward you; My soul sighs after you, like a dried up earth. Pause.
Parched earth. Just as a land struck by drought languishes after the water that will vivify it, David, persecuted, expected his divine deliverer to give him life.
7 ¶ Make haste to hear me, O LORD. My mind is consumed. Do not hide your face from me! I would be like those who go down into the pit.
your face. Anthropomorphism that describes God's attention to the plight of David.
8 Make me to hear your kindness early in the morning. For I trust in you. Let me know the way I have to walk! For I lift up my soul to you.
9 Deliver me from my enemies, O LORD. With you I seek refuge.
10 Teach me to do your will! For you are my God. May your good spirit lead me on the right path!
Your good Spirit. Designation of the Holy Spirit (see #Ps 51:13; #Ps 139: 7).
11 For thy name's sake, O LORD, give me life. In thy righteousness take my soul from distress.
Because of your name. David argued on the basis of God's profit and honor, not his own (see #Ps 23: 3; #Ps 31: 4; #Ps 79: 9).
12 In thy mercy, destroy my enemies, and destroy all the oppressors of my soul. For I am your servant.
Your servant. To attack a servant of God was to attack God himself, and he could not fail to intervene.
