1 ¶ Les enfants d’Israël partirent, et ils campèrent dans les plaines de Moab, au-delà du Jourdain, vis-à-vis de Jéricho.
Le contrôle de la Transjordanie assuré, Israël avança sans entrave jusqu’aux plaines de Moab pour se préparer à attaquer Canaan.
2 Balak, fils de Tsippor, vit tout ce qu’Israël avait fait aux Amoréens.
22:2-24:25 Le récit se concentre maintenant sur Balaam, un prophète païen. Ses oracles réaffirmèrent la fidélité de l’Éternel envers l’alliance conclue avec Abraham et son projet de bénir Israël. Les événements précédant les oracles de Balaam sont décrits en #No 22:2-40, puis viennent ses prophéties en #No 22:41-24: 24 et la conclusion en #No 24: 25.
3 Et Moab fut très effrayé en face d’un peuple aussi nombreux, il fut saisi de terreur en face des enfants d’Israël.
Moab fut très effrayé. Les Moabites descendaient de Lot (cf. #Ge 19:36-37). Leur roi Balak avait vu comment les Israélites avaient détruit les Amoréens. Ne sachant pas qu’Israël avait reçu de Dieu l’interdiction d’attaquer son peuple, il craignait que la même fin ne lui soit réservée (#De 2:9).
4 Moab dit aux anciens de Madian: Cette multitude va dévorer tout ce qui nous entoure, comme le bœuf broute la verdure des champs. Balak, fils de Tsippor, était alors roi de Moab.
Madian. Les Madianites vivant au sud de la frontière de Moab descendaient d’Abraham et Ketura (cf. #Ge 25:1-4). Lorsque les Moabites apprirent aux anciens de Madian qu’ils risquaient, eux aussi, d’être détruits par Israël, ils conclurent une alliance avec eux pour venir à bout de cette menace.
5 Il envoya des messagers auprès de Balaam, fils de Beor, à Pethor sur le fleuve, dans le pays des fils de son peuple, afin de l’appeler et de lui dire : Voici, un peuple est sorti d’Égypte, il couvre la surface de la terre, et il habite vis-à-vis de moi.
Balaam. Balaam venait de Pethor, une ville située sur la rive de l’Euphrate, peut-être près de Mari où l’on a découvert des preuves de l’existence d’un culte de prophètes dont les activités ressemblaient aux siennes. Balaam pratiquait la magie et la divination (#No 24: 1) et finit par pousser Israël à l’apostasie (#No 31:16). L’Écriture le présente, par la suite, comme un faux prophète (#De 23:3-6 ; #Jos 13: 22 ; #Jos 24:9-10 ; #Né 13:1-3 ; #Mi 6:5 ; #2P 2:15-16 ; #Jude 11 ; #Ap 2:14).
6 Viens, je te prie, maudis-moi ce peuple, car il est plus puissant que moi ; peut-être ainsi pourrai-je le battre et le chasserai-je du pays, car je sais que celui que tu bénis est béni, et que celui que tu maudis est maudit.
maudis-moi ce peuple. Sachant les Israélites trop forts pour qu’il puisse les vaincre militairement, Balak pria Balaam de les maudire. Une malédiction était une parole prononcée dans le but qu’il arrive malheur à celui contre lequel elle était prononcée. Aux yeux de Balak, Balaam avait la réputation de prononcer des malédictions qui se réalisaient effectivement.
7 Les anciens de Moab et les anciens de Madian partirent, ayant avec eux des présents pour le devin. Ils arrivèrent auprès de Balaam, et lui rapportèrent les paroles de Balak.
8 Balaam leur dit : Passez ici la nuit, et je vous donnerai réponse, d’après ce que l’Éternel me dira. Et les chefs de Moab restèrent chez Balaam.
d’après ce que l’Éternel me dira. Dans ces chapitres, Balaam lui-même utilise le nom de « l’Éternel », le Dieu d’Israël (vv. #No 22: 13, #No 22: 18 ; #No 23: 3, #No 23: 12 ; #No 24: 13). Au v. 18, il l’appelle même « l’Éternel, mon Dieu ». Il semble qu’il s’attendait à ce que le Dieu d’Israël lui parle. En tant que prophète païen, il s’attendait à pouvoir entrer en contact avec les dieux de n’importe quel peuple.
9 Dieu vint à Balaam, et dit: Qui sont ces hommes que tu as chez toi ?
Dieu vint à Balaam. Le Dieu d’Israël s’adressa à Balaam. Cependant, au lieu du terme « Éternel » qui implique une relation d’alliance, c’est le mot « Dieu » qui est constamment utilisé lorsqu’il s’adresse à lui (vv. #No 22: 9, #No 22: 12, #No 22: 20). Le texte biblique montre clairement que Balaam n’avait pas de véritable relation avec le Dieu d’Israël.
10 Balaam répondit à Dieu : Balak, fils de Tsippor, roi de Moab, les a envoyés pour me dire:
11 Voici, un peuple est sorti d’Égypte, et il couvre la surface de la terre ; viens donc, maudis-le ; peut-être ainsi pourrai-je le combattre, et le chasserai-je.
12 Dieu dit à Balaam : Tu n’iras point avec eux ; tu ne maudiras point ce peuple, car il est béni.
il est béni. Balaam ne put pas maudire Israël, parce que l’Éternel avait décidé de lui accorder seulement des bénédictions.
13 Balaam se leva le matin, et il dit aux chefs de Balak : Allez dans votre pays, car l’Éternel refuse de me laisser aller avec vous.
14 Et les princes de Moab se levèrent, retournèrent auprès de Balak, et dirent : Balaam a refusé de venir avec nous.
15 ¶ Balak envoya de nouveau des chefs en plus grand nombre et plus considérés que les précédents.
16 Ils arrivèrent auprès de Balaam, et lui dirent : Ainsi parle Balak, fils de Tsippor : Que l’on ne t’empêche donc pas de venir vers moi ;
17 car je te rendrai beaucoup d’honneurs, et je ferai tout ce que tu me diras ; viens, je te prie, maudis-moi ce peuple.
18 Balaam répondit et dit aux serviteurs de Balak : Quand Balak me donnerait sa maison pleine d’argent et d’or, je ne pourrais faire aucune chose, ni petite ni grande, contre l’ordre de l’Éternel, mon Dieu.
19 Maintenant, je vous prie, restez ici cette nuit, et je saurai ce que l’Éternel me dira encore.
20 Dieu vint à Balaam pendant la nuit, et lui dit : Puisque ces hommes sont venus pour t’appeler, lève-toi, va avec eux ; mais tu feras ce que je te dirai.
tu feras ce que je te dirai. Alléché par les biens matériels en perspective, Balaam désirait se rendre chez Balak. Il implora l’Éternel dans ce sens, même s’il lui avait interdit de partir. Dieu accéda à la requête de Balaam, mais avec l’ordre de ne dire que ce que lui-même lui transmettrait.
21 Balaam se leva le matin, sella son ânesse, et partit avec les chefs de Moab.
22 ¶ La colère de Dieu s’enflamma, parce qu’il était parti ; et l’ange de l’Éternel se plaça sur le chemin, pour lui résister. Balaam était monté sur son ânesse, et ses deux serviteurs étaient avec lui.
parce qu’il était parti. Même s’il avait autorisé Balaam à partir (v. #No 22: 20), Dieu savait que ses motivations n’étaient pas justes. C’est pourquoi sa colère s’enflamma contre celui qui ne se soumettait pas à ses exigences. Leur confrontation déboucha sur une confirmation de la parole donnée au v. 20, puis répétée au v. 35, à savoir qu’il devait dire uniquement les paroles de Dieu. Le v. 38 prouve que Balaam comprit le message.
l’ange de l’Éternel. L’ange était une manifestation de la présence de l’Éternel lui-même et lui était assimilé (cf. #Ge 16: 7 ; #Ge 18:1-2 ; #Ex 3:1-6).
23 L’ânesse vit l’ange de l’Éternel qui se tenait sur le chemin, son épée nue dans la main ; elle se détourna du chemin et alla dans les champs. Balaam frappa l’ânesse pour la ramener dans le chemin.
24 L’ange de l’Éternel se plaça dans un sentier entre les vignes ; il y avait un mur de chaque côté.
25 L’ânesse vit l’ange de l’Éternel ; elle se serra contre le mur, et pressa le pied de Balaam contre le mur. Balaam la frappa de nouveau.
26 L’ange de l’Éternel passa plus loin, et se plaça dans un lieu où il n’y avait point d’espace pour se détourner à droite ou à gauche.
27 L’ânesse vit l’ange de l’Éternel, et elle s’abattit sous Balaam. La colère de Balaam s’enflamma, et il frappa l’ânesse avec un bâton.
28 L’Éternel ouvrit la bouche de l’ânesse, et elle dit à Balaam : Que t’ai-je fait, pour que tu m’aies frappée déjà trois fois ?
L’Éternel ouvrit la bouche de l’ânesse. L’ânesse de Balaam vit l’ange de l’Éternel, l’épée à la main (vv. #No 22: 23, #No 22: 25, #No 22: 27). Consciente du danger, elle chercha à l’éviter. Ce faisant, elle protégea son maître, et c’est par un miracle qu’elle put lui parler.
29 Balaam répondit à l’ânesse : C’est parce que tu t’es moquée de moi ; si j’avais une épée dans la main, je te tuerais à l’instant.
30 L’ânesse dit à Balaam : Ne suis-je pas ton ânesse, que tu as de tout temps montée jusqu’à ce jour ? Ai-je l’habitude de te faire ainsi ? Et il répondit : Non.
31 L’Éternel ouvrit les yeux de Balaam, et Balaam vit l’ange de l’Éternel qui se tenait sur le chemin, son épée nue dans la main ; et il s’inclina, et se prosterna sur son visage.
L’Éternel ouvrit les yeux de Balaam. L’Éternel permit à Balaam de voir les réalités du monde spirituel, ordinairement invisibles aux humains, et de se soumettre à la volonté divine en vue de sa rencontre avec Balak.
32 L’ange de l’Éternel lui dit : Pourquoi as-tu frappé ton ânesse déjà trois fois ? Voici, je suis sorti pour te résister, car c’est un chemin de perdition qui est devant moi.
33 L’ânesse m’a vu, et elle s’est détournée devant moi déjà trois fois ; si elle ne se fût pas détournée de moi, je t’aurais même tué, et je lui aurais laissé la vie.
34 Balaam dit à l’ange de l’Éternel: J’ai péché, car je ne savais pas que tu te fusses placé au-devant de moi sur le chemin ; et maintenant, si tu me désapprouves, je m’en retournerai.
35 L’ange de l’Éternel dit à Balaam: Va avec ces hommes ; mais tu ne feras que répéter les paroles que je te dirai. Et Balaam alla avec les chefs de Balak.
36 ¶ Balak apprit que Balaam arrivait, et il sortit à sa rencontre jusqu’à la ville de Moab qui est sur la limite de l’Arnon, à l’extrême frontière.
37 Balak dit à Balaam : N’ai-je pas envoyé auprès de toi pour t’appeler ? Pourquoi n’es-tu pas venu vers moi ? Ne puis-je donc pas te traiter avec honneur ?
38 Balaam dit à Balak : Voici, je suis venu vers toi ; maintenant, me sera-t-il permis de dire quoi que ce soit ? Je dirai les paroles que Dieu mettra dans ma bouche.
39 Balaam alla avec Balak, et ils arrivèrent à Kirjath-Hutsoth.
40 Balak sacrifia des bœufs et des brebis, et il en envoya à Balaam et aux chefs qui étaient avec lui.
41 Le matin, Balak prit Balaam, et le fit monter à Bamoth-Baal, d’où Balaam vit une partie du peuple.
22:41-23:12 Son premier oracle affirma carrément qu’Israël ne pouvait pas être maudit (#No 23: 8). Cette nation était différente de toutes les autres (#No 23: 9). Balaam souhaita même prendre part à sa bénédiction (#No 23: 10).

1 ¶ The children of Israel journeyed, and camped in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan, opposite to Jericho.
The control of the insured Transjordan, Israel stepped up unhindered plains of Moab to prepare for attack Canaan.
2 Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
22: 2-24: 25 The story now focuses on Balaam, a pagan prophet. Oracles reaffirmed Lord's faithfulness to the covenant with Abraham and his plan to bless Israel. The events preceding the oracles of Balaam are described in #No 22: 2-40, followed by his prophecies #No 22: 41-24: 24 and the conclusion #No 24: 25.
3 And Moab was greatly afraid in front of so many people, he was afraid before of the children of Israel.
Moab was very afraid. The Moabites were descended from Lot (#Ge cf. 19: 36-37). Their king Balak had seen how the Israelites had destroyed the Amorites. Not knowing that Israel had received from God the prohibition of attacking his people, he feared that the very end does it is reserved (# of 2: 9).
4 Moab said to the elders of Midian, Now will this multitude lick up all that is around us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field. Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab.
Midian. The Midianites living south of the border of Moab descended from Abraham and Keturah (cf. #Ge 25: 1-4). When the Moabites learned the elders of Midian they might, too, be destroyed by Israel, they concluded an alliance with them to overcome this threat.
5 He sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor on the river, the land of the son of his people, to call him and tell him: Behold, a people came out of Egypt, it covers the surface of the earth, and lives vis-à-vis me.
Balaam. Balaam came from Pethor, a city located on the bank of the Euphrates, perhaps near Mari where we discovered evidence of the existence of a cult of prophets whose activities were similar to his. Balaam practiced magic and divination (#No 24: 1) and ends up pushing Israel to apostasy (#No 31:16). Scripture presents, subsequently, as a false prophet (# of 23: 3-6; #Jos 13: 22; #Jos 24: 9-10; # 13 Born: 1-3; #Mi 6: 5 ; # 2P 2: 15-16; #Jude 11; #Ap 2:14).
6 Come, I pray thee, curse me this people, because it is mightier than I; Maybe so will I beat him and I will drive the country, because I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.
curse me this people. Knowing the Israelites too strong for it to overcome militarily, Balak asked Balaam to curse them. A curse was a word spoken in order happens woe to the one against which it was pronounced. In the eyes of Balak, Balaam was reputed to pronounce the curses that are actually realized.
7 The elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with them the rewards of divination. They came to Balaam and told him the words of Balak.
8 he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word of what the Lord will tell me. And the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.
from what the Lord will tell me. In these chapters, Balaam himself uses the name "Yahweh," the God of Israel (vv #No 22: 13 #No 22: 18; #No. 23: 3, #No 23: 12; #no 24: 13). In v. 18, he calls even "Jehovah my God." It seems that he expected that the God of Israel speaks to him. As a pagan prophet, he expected to get in touch with the gods of any people.
9 God came to Balaam, and said, Who are these men with thee?
God came to Balaam. The God of Israel spoke to Balaam. However, instead of "Lord" implies a covenant relationship, the word "God" is constantly used when addressing him (vv #No. 22: 9, 22 #No: 12 #No 22: 20). The biblical text clearly shows that Balaam had no real relationship with the God of Israel.
10 Balaam said to God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent them to say:
11 Behold, a people came out of Egypt, and they cover the face of the earth; come now, curse it; Maybe so will I fight, and I drive them.
12 God said to Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people; for they are blessed.
they are blessed. Balaam could not curse Israel, because the LORD had decided to grant him blessings only.
13 Balaam rose in the morning and said to the princes of Balak, Go into your land; for Jehovah refuses to let me go with you.
14 And the princes of Moab rose up, went to Balak and said, Balaam refuses to come with us.
15 ¶ And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honorable than they.
16 They came to Balaam and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing therefore prevents you from coming to me;
17 For I will make you great honor, and I will do whatever you tell me; come, I pray thee, curse me this people.
18 Balaam answered the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not do anything, do less or more, against the order of Jehovah my God.
19 Now I beg you, stay here tonight, and I shall know that the Lord will tell me again.
20 God came to Balaam at night and said to him, If the men come to call you, rise up, go with them; but you will do what I tell you.
you will do what I tell you. Attracted by material things in perspective, Balaam wanted to go to Balak. He implored the Lord in this way, even if he had forbidden her to leave. God acceded to the request of Balaam, but with orders not to say that he himself would send him.
21 Balaam arose in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.
22 ¶ And God's anger was kindled because he went; and the angel of the LORD stood in the road to resist him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.
because he went. Although it had authorized Balaam from (v #No. 22: 20), God knew that his motives were not fair. That is why his anger was kindled against the man who did not comply with its requirements. Their confrontation led to a confirmation of the promise given in verse. 20 and then repeated in v. 35, that he should say only the words of God. V. 38 proves that Balaam got the message.
the angel of the LORD. The angel was a manifestation of the presence of the Lord himself and was assimilated him (cf. #Ge 16: 7; #Ge 18: 1-2; #Ex 3: 1-6).
23 The donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand; She turned from the way and went into the field. Balaam smote the ass to turn her into the way.
24 The angel of the LORD stood in a path of the vineyards; there was a wall on each side.
25 The donkey saw the angel of the LORD; she thrust herself against the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall. Balaam smote her again.
26 The angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a place where there was no room to turn away to the right or left.
27 The donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she fell down under Balaam. Balaam's anger was kindled, and he struck the donkey with a stick.
28 And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said to Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?
The Lord opened the mouth of the ass. The Balaam's ass saw the angel of the Lord, the sword (vv #No. 22: 23 #No 22: 25 #No 22: 27). Aware of the danger, she tried to avoid it. In doing so it protected his master, and it's a miracle that she was able to talk to him.
29 Balaam said to the ass, Because thou hast mocked me; if I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you instantly.
30 The donkey said to Balaam, Am I not your ass, upon which thou hast ridden all to this day? I used to make you well? And he answered, No.
31 And the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed and prostrated himself on his face.
The Lord opened Balaam's eyes. The Lord allowed Balaam to see the realities of the spiritual world, usually invisible to humans, and to submit to God's will for his meeting with Balak.
32 The angel of the LORD said unto him, Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I went out to withstand you, because it is a destruction path before me.
33 The donkey saw me and turned aside before me these three times; if it was not turned away from me, I would have killed you, and I would have saved her alive.
34 Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, I have sinned, for I did not know that thou wert placed you in front of me on the way; and now if it displease thee, I will return to me.
35 The angel of the LORD said unto Balaam, Go with the men; but you'll only repeat the words that I tell you. And Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
36 ¶ And Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him to the City of Moab, which is on the border of Arnon, in the extreme border.
37 Balak said to Balaam, Did I not send to you to call you? Why do not you come to me? May I therefore you honor?
38 Balaam said to Balak, Behold, I have come to you; Now, he will be allowed to tell me anything? I will say the words that God puts in my mouth.
39 Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath Hutsoth.
40 Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam and the leaders who were with him.
41 In the morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth Baal, from where Balaam saw part of the people.
22: 41-23: 12 His first oracle bluntly asserted that Israel could not be cursed (#No 23: 8). This nation was different from all the others (#No 23: 9). Balaam wanted to even take part in his blessing (#No 23: 10).
